Well here we go again... Issue 8! That’s got to be lucky right? I’m also writing this as of right this second a 40 year old man, yep that’s right kids, as of now I am officially old! What’s this got to do with BMX... Well BMX is also 40 years old this year!

What’s changed? A lot! But isn’t change a good thing? Am I asking to many questions? ... I did that as a kid. I also started BMX as a kid and still ride when I’m not knocking up the magazine. You know, someone once said to me “no point in getiing older if you don’t get wiser”, so do I offer up some kind of 40 year old words of wisdom speach now.. Naaaaaaa I don’t think so I’m just going to rattle on till I fill this sqaure. It’s funny this is the start for you guys but the end for me, I write this last. So just enjoy and give us all more birthdays I say! ... fehw !.. done it!

GOSPORTRounds 9&10 came across a new venue at Gosport. This unique track compared to the rest conveyed a tight and technical layout in exchange for big jumps and lengthy straights. A lot of hard graft and support from the Gosport BMX club was given to provide us with a weekend of anticipation and excitement on their newly developed track. This is how the weekend ran through…

The 6 & unders, Jack Hawkins took away both wins followed by Elliot Boyer and Owen Scattergood in close proximity.

In the 7’s, Fastlane recruit and local boy Ethan Craik had a crowd pleasing weekend sealing both wins. Preston Pirate Mr McDermott was in close range and Travis Wilson wasn’t too shabby either.

The 8 year olds appeared to be all about Ryan Brookes as he bagged both wins for Intense Route 55 and Preston. Ryan O’loughlin chased hard and satisfied himself with two seconds and third was swapped between Harvey Howard and Mathew Harman.

The 9’s saw Ross Cullen blitz the field and do the double. Josh Coppin and Josh Peters who both exchanged second, were ready to pray on the Preston Pirate.

In the 10’s, Gideon Orena stole the show with a double win. Ethan Vernon remained solid with two seconds and third place was served between Shay Casey who rode very well and Intense rider Lewis Locker who worked hard and earned his place.

Haydon Green rode well in the 11s, nipping Saturdays win ahead of Eddie Moore, who took the win on the Sunday. After some bad mis-fortune for Aaron Dalleywater in Saturdy’s semi he redeemed himself in Sundays final by riding ruthlessly, but lost the win down the final straight.

Leading the 12’s was Kye Whyte who had it all his own way both rounds, but Tom Novis and Daigoro Fortune were chopping at his heels and swapped second and third.

The 16’s came and all looked to be the same for Jacob Roberts. But in Saturday’s final his perfect winning streak was broken by Intense Rider Jordan Perry who worked so incredibly hard to pass him. Definitely one of the most deserved wins of this year. However, order was re-stored by Roberts on the Sunday. Riders such as Daniel Longhurst and Toby Bearne looked sharp over the rounds too, as did Bournemouth’s Jack Smallpiece.

The 17-24’s has forever been known for its unpredictability, excite-ment and elbows. Robbie Goodman set the pace with his first straight pull and was untouchable both days with Maris Strazdins pressing hard. Revamped from South Africa, W8 – Billy Luckhurst was looking splendorous and touched two thirds. Nate Dogg Routledge put a move on Andy Clucas in Saturday’s semi to gain a final place. The tables turned for Nate Dogg on Sunday and Andy’s fortune paid highly for him as he earned a second.

The 13’s were next and what can you say about Jimmy Orena; his straight line speed is just unparallel! He very quickly stole the show ahead of one smooth Jordan Hatcher and a skilfully-talented Paddy Sharrock; kudos to Haro’s Owen Baxter, who rode very well indeed.

The 14’s had Dialled Bikes hot-shot Quillan Isidore, absent and on crutches, so the opportunity arose for Fastlanes Bardolf Kerr to do the double. Harry Stickley had second on Saturday but suffered a seventh on Sunday. Oliver Fay did a pleasantly-understated comeback and bagged third both days.

15 year olds, Dan Pullen was another rider who took it from the start both days, with an impressive display of power and ease. Cameron Howard rode hard, as did Bradley Minns. Emile Rocher de Francia (from France) was a surprising hit in the mix riding strong and fluently to bag fifth and second.

The 25-29’s is a small class with some big hitters, like Michael Smart who did the double treatment. Gaz Bates and Michael Pinnock were in top three on Saturday, but a huge collision sent Bates and Pinnock over. Thankfully, they both walked away - bashed but intact.

The Masters has probably been the most eagerly anticipated class this year with an array of ex-pro’s and BMX hero’s. The focus was on Alan Hill and Dylan Clayton, who were both utterly awesome. Hilly, with his vast track knowledge and experience pulled out a danger-ously-calculated move on Dylan to claim round 9. The manoeuvre couldn’t be repeated and Dylan smoothed his way to the finish to take round 10 as if it were a “day at the trails” as the commentator so perfectly put. Among the action was Darren Reidy who had the ‘Roar of Reidy’ behind him as he swept up third both days.

The Veterans may not be heaving, but you have to applaud their attitude and efforts. Cheers for Nigel Whyte surrounded the venue for his win on Saturday over Steve Williams, who is always exciting to watch. Sunday’s outcome was quite different for Steve when he discovered a quicker way to the finish line… over the second-from-last corner, by Daddy Whyte himself. While this came about Wayne Foster was already in the lead to claim first and took round 10.

In the Females Emily Hutt doubled in the 6 & unders, as did Imogen Hill (7-8’s), Kim Baptista (9-10’s) and EA Pure’s Lauren Stack (11-12’s) who all tallied up maximum points. The 13-14’s had a three-way clash with Jenny Noble packing the win in round 9 in front of Angel-ica Orena and Valerie Zebrokova. However, Valerie and Jenny went head-to-head all the way to the finish in round 10 with both riders riding extremely well. Unluckily, Jenny lost out and was pinched at the finish for first by Valerie Zebrokova while Angelica stationed for third respectively.

The Cruiser racing emerged and Ben Armitage took the double in the 9-12’s. It was Roy Jones for the 13-14’s ahead of Decoys Adam Green and Owen Baxter who appears to have stepped up and is riding well. Toby Bearne doubled up with ease in the 15-16’s, but wasn’t far in front of Joe Stupple and Cameron Howard.

The 17-29’s was dominated by the UCR Finelines trio with Mark Maddox polishing off round 9 ahead of the Bauer Brothers. Round 10 was taken by Ryan Bauer with Thomas Bauer coming in second and Mark third. Oliver Cutmore was also in the mix and riding impressively well indeed, as was Martin ‘Smiley’ Brown.

30-34’s Neil Harbour added another two wins to his prefect sea-son. He has been something special this year, what a rider…

35-39’s has its fair share of madness, but Hilly avoided it all by staying out front and doing the double. “Flemdog” Fleming and Clive Hawkins were close behind ready to advance on any mis-takes; but to be honest when does Hilly ever make mistakes?

Jon Moore in the 40-44’s, did the double with Bernard Schaale and Karl Sanderson pressing hard behind. 45+ was rendered by Keith Wilson who took back-to-back wins as he crossed the line to punch the air with delight. Groove mentalist Ady Warden looked good all weekend in BMX and cruisers and stuck behind Keith for two second places.

The Championship Women gets more exciting at every national and this weekend did not differ, an impressive and aggressive ride from Ayesha McClelland on her home ground put her in a good position on Saturday for second; although it was obvious she wanted the win.

Emily James had an excellent final on Sunday as she charged down the first straight and held her station for second ahead of W3 Lauren Smith, but it was Charlotte green all the way. She kept the opposition were she wanted to and showed a high level of track skill; that’s why she doubled up for the weekend and looked good for the overall national title.

Junior Men had an ABA style introduction which featured some interesting facts about the top eight and left the audience on edge when the gate finally dropped. Intense rider Grant Hill punched his way to the first turn to hold off rival team buddy Jack Hall and the big-hitter from Ultimate BMX Curtis Manaton. Curtis took second behind Grant in round 10 in front of Ben Clarkson and Jack Hall.

GOSPORT The 25 & over Cruiser Ladies was taken by W1 Ria Goodman who followed up from an exceptional performance in South Africa, but Claire Morrison was the purpose of this class and looked unstoppable for the national title.

Page 9: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

The final class Elite Men had its own story to tell. With some of the countries’ top hopefuls experiencing unsuccessful results at the World Championships due to bad fortune or injury; here this weekend was an opportunity for them to salvage some broken faith and repair their character. This season so far has been a constant battle with Bloomy and Kelvin, but at round 9 Kelvin streaked ahead and sought off Bloomy for the win whilst Kyle Evans continued to amaze and took third. The two impres-sive youngsters had their own fight in the pack with fourth place going to Tre Whyte and fifth to Dan McBride.

Round 10 and the Elite’s received the same ABA style recep-tion, once the gate dropped Marcus Bloomfield lead the pack despite his injured ankle and Kelvin was playing catch up until the big double, where he suffered a big crash and took Kyle down with him. Daniel Whyte did very well to keep third to the big double and proceeded to second place, whilst Dan McBride excelled and advanced to third with Fastlane’s Cal Stickland in fourth. Bloomy thundered through with extraordinary speed and skill through the jumps as they got tighter and claimed the win.

Gosport was a fantastic weekend, with a combination of heavy showers and blazing sun giving a personality to the event. A huge thanks to all the members of the Gosport BMX club for working tirelessly to get the track ready in time and putting on a great event on an excellent track. www.gosportbmx.co.uk

You just bought a new house. How’s that?

“the Latvian President called my phone and at first I couldn’t believe it was him – I was convinced my buddies were playing a joke on me”

Yes, I bought a house just a couple of months ago. It’s been great. While there’s still a lot of shopping left to do it’s actually starting to look like a home from the inside out! I’ve really been enjoy living by myself, I abide by my own rules, I’m responsible for my own mess, and I just love it!

Not really, I would say American girls are more open and friendly! And, of course, those fake boobs are not as popular back home.

Are the girls different in the US compared to Latvia?

Do you have more girl fans in Latvia or US?

I have to say US, but the good thing is that more or less they are everywhere .

Page 13: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

13

How’s life in Murrieta. When you not racing and training what do you like to do?

How do you like living in the US, racing and training with the World’s best week in week out compared to living in Europe?

TAHthe machineMAA ATHthe machineMAA TAHthe machineMAATAHthe machineMAA ATHthe machineMAA TAHthe machineMAA

It is pretty laid back and chilled but I kind of like it! There aren’t many distractions which has served me well because I continue to remain totally focused on BMX. I love the weather here, the sushi spots are great and the daily Starbucks rounds are cool too. There isn’t much down time in my schedule because I’m committed to racing and training 11 months out of the year. To be honest not much compares to hanging at home and being lazy since I don’t get the chance to do that the other 11 months out of the year. I enjoy chilling at home and watching movies – I also enjoy the occasional glass of red wine. To be honest, I’m not a big party guy.

There is no doubt that moving to America was a great investment for my career and it has helped me to become a better racer. The resources here are vast and I’m focused on trying to get even better with each passing year. I’ve always enjoyed a challenge – it keeps me on top of my game, and racing with the World’s best week in and week out definitely keeps my competitive drive rolling and keeps me very focused on improving. Competition is so tough here that without improving all of the time it’s almost impossible to win the races! Here in the US you have to stay in shape all year long, there is really no offseason. In Europe the season lasts for a couple of months and that’s it, that’s why it was hard to get used to it in my first year after I moved to US!

As far as training goes – I like to train by myself or with a couple of my Latvian buddies but most of the time I prefer training alone! It’s easier for me to completely focus.

How are things in Latvia when your home? Word is you’re in the gossip magazines and the Latvian “TMZ” cameras await your arrival at the Airport and the President even contacts you from time to time. It’s got to be cool having that kind of status when visiting back there?

Who are some of the guys you ride with out in California? We’re thinking at 23 you’ve still got a long career ahead, any idea what you want to do after racing?

Maris Strombergs

Its always fun to go home and let’s just say it’s different that’s true, its really easy to get in those gossip magazines I always just try to stay away from that stuff. Yes, I can usually count on a couple of journalists camping out at the airport when I go home. I remember after I won Olympics games the Latvian President called my phone and at first I couldn’t believe it was him – I was convinced my buddies were playing a joke on me – gosh, i’m glad I kept quiet because it turns out it was him!

After the World’s the President sent me a letter of congratulations it was surreal and meant a lot. It’s just great to go back home I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and I miss the Latvian food. I do a couple of local interviews and I’m always meeting new friends and I really enjoy that. I like it here in the US where people don’t recognize me on the streets, it’s just easier to live. But truthfully, I do enjoy the pomp and circumstance once in awhile – it’s great to have the best of both worlds – literally.

How was life in Latvia growing up and racing BMX?

I’m always going to remember my first BMX experiences in Latvia with positive memories! It’s crazy when I look back in time from when I started BMX to where I am now, so many things have changed since that! In Latvia we were far behind other countries in BMX and always strived to learn what we could from other progressive countries. I’m a firm believer that anything is possible with both hard work and a positive attitude while also surrounding yourself with the right people!

Did you ever have desire to be the Worlds’ best and live in the U.S.A or did it just kind of happen?

When I turned 17 I began to take BMX seriously. I can even remember back when I was 16 - I actually thought about quitting BMX - sure glad I didn‘t do that! Believe me I wouldn’t be where I am now if I lacked a desire and drive to always be my very best, while always recognising there’s more to learn and knowing full-well I’d land in the U.S.A! I never sell myself short, nor anyone else, big dreams and hard work can yield big results.

I always hoped I’d enjoy living the American dream - now I’m thankful everyday that I do. Dream big; believe in yourself, work hard and it is possible that you too will live the American Dream if you aren’t already!

I’m planning to race at a high level until 29, so give or take I‘ve got about six more years to figure that one out! As we round the corner to my 30th, Mr. Machine will hopefully begin his new career as a successful businessman, I always enjoy a new challenge and business interests me.

I expect a lot of myself today and always have because when I do something it’s a full 100% - no looking back - when I walk away from BMX at the end of my career - I plan to give my next ventures 100% percent as well. I’ll keep my best BMX memories of that time and open a new chapter in my life and start to do something else!

How many more Olympics do you think you have in you?Two (2) more in BMX

What’s your take on the World Cup? How would you improve it if you could?

I like it how it is now! I’m not a guy who likes to complain about everything! Chula Vista SX race is how it should be all the time! Perfect example, I like that!

Usually, Marc Willers, Steve Larralde and Khaylen Young… sometimes Sam comes out to ride at Lake Perris and that’s pretty much it!Favorite Foods?Wahoo’s and Chipotle (Mexican food) top my list but I’m not very picky I pretty much eat everything! I enjoy going home to visit family and friends and also to enjoy great Latvian food! It’s too hard to make on my own all of the time. Maybe I should roll like the big dogs and hire a personal chef like all those basketball players or find a wife to help-out - well on second thought, I think a personal chef would much less expensive and a lot less drama - haha! Favorite Web sites?NBA.com, youtube.com, facebook, fastlanebmxmag of course and hopefully, marisstrombergs.com coming soon

It’s a special trophy for me it really means a lot and I know that all the freestyle guys back home in Latvia dream about this trophy. The funny thing is that I didn’t know much about it last year, but I’m definitely looking forward to being in the Nora cup mix next year. After the awards ceremony we all partied it up at the Hard Rock Hotel, even my coach Ivo Lakucs celebrated too with a couple of drinks! But…back to work now as there’s still a long season ahead of me!

You just won the Nora Cup Racer of the Year for the second year in a row, how did the Awards night go, did you Party it up Vegas style?

A machine is a device that uses energy to perform some activity, a device that transforms the direction or magnitude of a force without consuming any energy. The word "machine" is derived from the Latin word machina.

TV?America’s Got Talent! Actually, I’m not a huge TV fan, but sometimes I watch those shows on MTV, like Jersey Shore but usually I just watch a movie or work on my laptop!

Why is there so many good riders coming from Latvia?

Simply stated, because of my dedicated trainer and friend, Ivo…

Name 3 famous people you know?

I know couple of popular people back in Latvia, but here in the U.S.A the only one I know is Stephen Murray!Ever thought of Velodrome?Actually, I was thinking about that but we’ll see…right now my only focus is on BMX! I might try it later after a couple of years, but not sure yet! Maybe I’ll try both BMX and Velodrome for the 2016 Olympic Games! Nothing like a new challenge - I like to set my goal’s high, that’s what keeps me going! What are your plans for 2011?Next year, I’m probably going to take it a little bit easier! My two main goals will be the World Championship and NBL. I plan to do a couple of ABA races and just a couple of SX rounds and that’s it!

Words: Julian Allen Images: Spencer Moret / Dave LaneBournemouth

Oooooh we do like to be beside the seaside, we do like to be

beside the sea ...........yes the culmination of the national series

2010 rolled into Bournemouth over the August Bank Holiday.

After a few gripes about the track and infield condition in 2009,

the club had put in loads of effort to get the venue well prepped

with turf on the sides of the jumps and more pebbles on the

infield than Brighton beach! Titles were on the line and things

were still wide open in quite a few age groups.

I do like to stroll upon the Prom, Prom, Prom..! to see Jack

Hawkins take the win on day 1 and the 6 and under national title

back to Burnham. Benjamin Perry stepped on the top step on

Sunday. Cory Maggs took the 2 spot both days and Elliot Bow-

yer swapped 3rd and 4ths with William Goode over the weekend.

Onto the 7s and Preston’s Keon Smith-Mcdermott did the busi-

ness both days with maximum points to take the national #2

plate. Fastlane’s Ethan Craik took junior radness to a new level

with some awesome jumping on the second straight doubles, he

also took the national title home to Gosport. 2009s champ; Alex

Brookes took a 2nd and 3rd over the weekend and the #3 plate

back to Preston.

The 8 year old boys class is tough, FACT!! Bournemouth local

Kobi Joyce is tougher! He brought the house down on Saturday

with an awesome win and his mum did a little celebration dance

later on in the rugby club house (see Facebook for the most

awesome caterpillar vid you have ever seen!!). 2009s #2; Ryan

O’loughlin went one better for 2010 with the win on Sunday and

the national title. Ryan Brookes took top 4 both days for the #2

plate and Matt Hutt settled for the #3 plate.

The 9s saw Ross Cullen unstoppable all weekend and he went

home with two wins and the national title by over 100 points...

RAD!! Taylor Johnson and Josh Coppin went 2-3 on Saturday

and Josh Peters joined the podium party on Sunday for the 3

spot and #3 plate.

EA/Pure’ s Ethan Vernon and SE’s Gideon Orena traded rad-

ness all year in the 10s. It looked set to go to the wire but a

crash in the main Saturday saw Ethan’s title hopes slip away

and he wound up with a leg cast and the #2 plate for 2010. Heal

up soon son!! Gideon took the win on Saturday and a safe 2nd

on Sunday to bag another tile for The Hawks. Euan Hunt had his

first win of the year on Sunday and Shay Casey took a podium

on Saturday and the #3 plate.

The 11s was well on the boil for the last 2 rounds and the top

spots were gonna be too close to call. Benjamin Armitage did

the business on Saturday and took home the #4 plate. Fast-

lane’s and Braintree’s; George Moret had his seasons best

finishes with a 2nd and 3rd for the weekend, and the #6 plate for

the second year running, club-mate Josh Legrove took a 3rd on

Saturday. Harley Taylor was on fire on the Sunday and took the

win and the #2 plate, but Decoys Haydon Green finished 2nd and

it was just enough to take the #1 plate by just 5 points.

In the 12s Kye Whyte continued his annihilation of the class

with 2 wins and near maximum points for the #1 plate, I think

Nige was pleased! Braintree’s; Lee Golder had his seasons best

national with a 2nd and 4th. Route 55s Daigoro Fortune had a

mixed weekend and took the #3 plate and Tom Novis showed

his consistency with a podium finish and the #2 plate to take

back to Decoy.

Jimmy Orena and Jordan Hatcher dominated the 13s all year.

Jimmy only got beat twice all year and a maximum 540 points

for 10 rounds took him all the way to number 1 for 2010. Jordan

took a pair of 2nds on his home track for the #2 plate. Paddy

“TURNDOWN” Sharrock kept it smooth (both on and off the

track) for the #3 plate.

National Rounds 11&12 28/29.08.2010.

Tibbs/Haro Dan Pullen: Collecting more silver wear to furnish the tent!

Page 19: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

19

In the 14s; Quillan Isidore had looked set for the #1, but a mid-season broken leg was going to make him have to wait for his plate as Callum Wing did just enough with a podium on Sunday to take the national title by 2 points!! It was left for Joshua Tucker to get it done with 2 wins over the weekend and a well deserved #3 plate for his troubles. Braintree’s Taylor Andrews hit up the podium again and is “looking to get right on it over the winter buh!!”

Dan Pullen finished the season strong. He did the double again and took the #1 plate to show the girls in his “Pullen” tent. Ryan Stack followed him home on Saturday in 2nd and took the #2 plate for the year. Ryan had another super-hard crash on Sunday but he just got up and shrugged it off-TOUGH LAD! Brad Minns took the 2 spot on Sunday and George Warner looked good with two 3rd places. Cam Howard held on to the #3 plate after sitting out with a broken collarbone.

Stepping up to the 16s, Jacob Roberts and Jordan Perry had a stranglehold of the class all year and sat Bournemouth out knowing the top 2 national spots were safe for 2010. This left the door open for Bournemouth’s own Jack Smallpiece to take the win on Saturday and a 3rd on Sunday to storm home for the #3 plate. Grooves Toby Bearne will be repping the #4 plate after an awesome win on Sunday and Micheal Hawker had 2 solid podiums to take the #5.

The stacked 17-24s saw Billy Luckhurst smooth his way to the win on Saturday, 2nd on Sunday and the National title to go with his W8. Nice one Nighthawk! “Who is” Ash Davey chased hard for the 2 spot on Saturday and the #2 plate. Robbie Goodman was awesome for the win on Sunday following his 3rd on Saturday (which Euan celebrated hard allegedly?) and took the #4. Andy Clucas kept consistent and wound up with #3 for 2010. Brad “BAD BOY” Watts turned up and made the main just for fun, then steamed home to go clubbing....ESSSSSSSEX!!

The 25-29s was all about TJ Racings Micheal Smart in 2010, he took two wins at Bournemouth and the National title. Benjamin Martinez-A VII entered the season late and proved a force to be reckoned with, he took two 2nds and could be a danger for 2011. Rob Reed and Bournemouth local James Chadwick shared the last step of the podium over the weekend.

Onto the Masters and it was all about East Anglia on day 1. EA/Pure’s Rich T took his first national win in 26 years and was stoked, Alan Hill chased him down for 2nd and wrapped up the #1 plate. Matt “THE BARN” Barnard brought it home for the first of his two 3rds of the weekend representing Team Wu. Day 2 saw Zoltan Buday take his first win of the year and finished off with the #2 plate, Team Wu TM; “Euro” Dave Godfrey gave it everything for 2nd whilst Hilly and “Mangler” Andrews did a bit of break dancing for the EA fans.

EA/Pure Rich Townsend: 26 years in the making, bet that tasted sweet!

In the Diesel (Vets) class, Wayne “FOS” Foster had wrapped up the #1 and decided to stay home and celebrate leaving Nigel “DADDY” Whyte to sort out the #2 plate following an almighty national win in round 12. DYA NO WHADIME SAYIN BRUV? Lee Alexander took the win in round 11, but a huge crash (does Lee have any other sort of crash?) In moto 4 saw him nearly finish round 12 in the ambulance, but was heard saying “If I can stand up, I can drive home!” Steve Williams looked on it on Day 1, but a few shandy’s on Saturday night saw him sit out day 2 (is it cos he now rides for the South.......)

Emily Hutt dominated the 6& under girls and took the #1 plate with a perfect season. Imogen Hill and Darcie Taylor shared the wins in the 7-8 girls over the weekend and went 1-2 respectively for the year; followed by the ever smiling Mollie Foster in 3rd. Kim Baptista was another young lady who had a perfect season in the 9-10 girls. Lauren Stack had another win and the title wrapped up in the 11-12 girls, but she had to work for it as Alesi Tye went for the win on day 1. Following a broken wrist, Bethany Campbell returned to take the win on day 2 and the #1 plate in the 13-14 girls. Angelica-Arena Orena made the top step for round 11. Bethan Hallet took the win in 15-16 girls. Championship women saw Charlotte Green, Ria Goodman and Emily James go 1, 2, 3 for the weekend and Charlz with the #1.

9-12 cruisers saw Tom Novis looking super stylish with 2 wins and the title. Roy Jones and Owen Baxter went at it in the 13-14s with a win apiece and Roy taking the title. Toby Bearne had it all his own way in the 15-16s, and wrapped up the title in fine style. In the 17-29s the top step was shared by Mark Maddox and Pete Warner, but Ryan Bauer did enough for the #1 plate. Neil Harbour ruled the 30-34s and stayed at home with the title which left Dave “BB” Ives to step in on day 1 and Andy Drelincourt on day 2. 35-39 saw Hilly take the double. Darren O’Brien and Paul Eccles went down hard on day 2. Daz got hit hardest and had blood all over his face. ROCKY!! Your humble scribe took the B final win, WATCH OUT 2011!! Local boy Jon Moore took the title and Day 1s win in 40-44, but was pushed hard by Karl Sanderson who took the win on day 2. W4 K-Dub took 2 wins and the #2 plate in 45+ but Ady Warden keeps his #1 plate on for 2011which the ladies love! Claire Morrison had a win and the title wrapped up in 25+ ladies with W1 Ria Goodman getting it done for the final round.

Jr. Men saw Grant Hill take two more wins and dominate the class for 2010. He must go Elite next year.... Jordan Hayes was smooth as always and took #2, whilst Curtis Manaton had two podiums and the #3 plate. Jack Hall took another BIG slam on day 2, but he was back on Sunday night to show off his shirtless pull up training regime......did some say “Shandy?”

So onto the big guns in Elite, Bloomy was super quick all weekend but a big move by Kelvin in the last corner saw them both falter and Dan Whyte steal the win for day 1 and the #3 plate. Day 2 and the gate goes down with Kelvin stone last, Bloomy was gone and looked unstoppable. Kelvin went into the first corner 6th, came out 5th and picked off the others all over the track to romp home a very close 2nd. AWESOME!!

So that was 2010s last nationals. The bar for national races has been raised. 2011s nationals promise to be off the hook! More new tracks, and new riders taking wins, it’s gonna be mental!!

It’s a pretty rare thing in BMX, but from time to time you will witness unbelievable natural talent. My personal

examples of this would be riders like Dylan Clayton, Scott Edgeworth, Wazza Bancroft, people that I think were put

on this earth to purely to ride a bike, I believe this kid has that same aura about him. He just makes things look

so easy on a bike. He dominated the National Series in his age group this year...except it wasn’t actually his age

group; he was actually riding up an age. If he wants it bad enough, he has a massive future in BMX........I am of

course talking about Redline’s Jacob Roberts.

Name – Jacob Roberts Age - 15 Home town- Pie capital of the world…. WIGAN Sponsors – Redline, Vans, Lloyds TSB

Achievements in BMX to date? 4x National champion in a row 4x British champion in a row

So Jacob.... Jacob or Jake? I prefer Jake… My Mum calls me Jacob when I’m in trouble.

How has 2010 gone for you? 2010 what a year, 9 from 10 wins. Not one of my most difficult seasons but it’s been successful and a good point scoring year for the team.

When you are on your bike where does it tend to be and who tends to be riding with you? Normally you will find me chilling out riding street and trails with my mates or with the lads (Marcus Bloomfield, Cal Strickland, Kyle Evans and Jordan Hayes) down at Manchester track. I generally like having a laugh and throwing whip competitions.

I’ve heard that you’re not much into the training side of things, is this true? Ha ha not true I train around 5 or 6 times a week depending if I have a race…. But I actually enjoy training!

What do you do to keep on top of your game? Train hard, eat loads and train more… That’s about it

So you rode up in the 16’s this year and owned the age group which consisted of top riders like Jordan Perry, what now are the plans for 2011 or is it a secret? No it’s not a secret I’m going to Junior Men with the likes of Ben Clarkson, Jordan Perry and who ever else is rocking it up in there…. It should be a really good year next year for Junior so you’d better all be watching.

Did you do any racing abroad this year and if so how was it? I travelled to Holland for the round at Valkenasward and it didn’t go well to be honest. Saturday was terrible and Sunday didn’t go much better. Think I went out in the quarters after having had a bad gate and fighting back from 8th to just miss out on 4th. I have done better in previous European races that I’ve attended!

Any plans for any races in Europe or America in 2011? America….. Wish I had the money for that, but Europe is a definite for me in 2011. Hopefully with a bit more experience out there I can start to get some better results.

You don’t just race do you, tell us a bit about the other riding you do? Well I do like riding trails that’s got to be one of the main things I do… However I have got a secret passion for snowboarding as well as skateboarding.

How do you think other forms of BMX help you personally when it comes to racing? Trails definitely help me become smoother round the track but also just going out “playing” on my bike popping manuals and wheelies everywhere. I’ve found that has made a lot of things come more naturally like pick up manuals.

Apart from you killing it at almost every National this year, one thing that sticks in my head about you during this season was a pretty spectacular slam you had at Manchester. Explain the events, what happened and what was going through your mind when you were going down? Haha, yes ermmm, well I went to pick up jump the quad into the second corner but it turned into a pick up manual and as I went to pull my brake it flipped me straight over the bars heading straight for the floor.

Weirdly enough I was actually thinking of a girl in boardercross who was in the same sort of crash as me (heading to the floor head first) and she tucked and rolled so out of instinct that’s what I did. Only to then be hit in the back by Dan Longhurst. I wasn’t hurt and I remember I got back on my bike and jumped the third straight.

Who would you say has been your closest ever rival(s) in your time racing? Bradley Minns back when I was ages 10, 11 & 12. Jack Hall & Adam Smith when I was 13 and they were 14. There was some close racing back then.

Who have your influences been throughout your time riding and why? My Great Granddad actually, when I first started racing he would always say to me “remember Jacob I can, I will, I did” and really these six words have stuck with me especially the last 4 years since he passed away… When I go out and race I always have his motto on my plate and I ride for him. Also my Uncle Dave Arnold for getting me into all the best sports, Mike Pardon for the encourage-ment and life-long friendship, Chris Mahoney, for just being Chris, Sifiso Nhlapo – can’t say why I admire this guy, I just do.

How do you like riding for Redline? Flipping marvellous I really enjoy Redline, we’ve got a good team, a good manager and above all we all get along well so it’s a real nice atmosphere and something I am very proud to be part of.

I’d imagine its great having someone like Hilly (Alan Hill) as a Team mate, how does he help you? Ahhh good old Hilly, Alan’s full of words of wisdom and he’s a great guy on and off the track. He’s the proof that you can be the top of your game and be a sportsman and a gent all at the same time.

What’s Jai (Kemp) like as a team manager? Well you know… Could do better!!! Ha ha only joking Jai is a great manager. He really puts his heart and soul into the Redline team. You can go to Jai and talk to him about virtually anything. . He’s a great guy.

BMXican Roy “Sutty” Sutton is your Step dad; how does he support your racing and riding? Roy takes me to places to train and we hit up pump-tracks etc, he also is always putting new things on my bike, half the time I don’t even notice the new stuff or changes ha ha, but he’s a great Step dad to me and I don’t think I couldn’t ask for more. I know I couldn’t ever do the training let alone the racing without him.

Have you set yourself any goals for next season yet, if so what are they? I would like to make top 3 in Junior Men, along with making consistent finals in Europe.

What would you say your long term ambitions and aims are in BMX? Hopefully Olympic Champion, It’s every young kids dream and it’s mine too, I just want to be the best that I can possibly be.

Being someone who just loves riding a BMX full stop, what would you say to any kid reading this who is considering giving racing a go? Be aware, it’s addictive, a real adrenaline rush… Once you have the taste for it you’ll want it more and more. That said, go out there and have fun on your bike!

Favourite.......

Track of all time? I love Cheddar, it’s a bit like Marmite you either love it or you hate it... I love it.

Race of 2010 and why? The British Championship final, the feeling of winning the double title for the fourth year in a row, priceless.

Food? Probably got to be my Mums lasagne.

Skatepark you have ridden? My Uncle Dave’s Bowl (Yo-Yo’s Bowl)

Person (Famous or not)? My Mum Sid Vicious – R.I.P. Film? JACKASS

Buddies on the race scene? Dan Pullen, Shane Dean, Ben Clarkson, Jordan Hayes, Beth Campbell, Paddy Sharrock. There are loads more, too many to mention - just all rad kids.

Any final words, shout outs or thank you’s? Thanks to my mum, Roy (Sutty), my little sister… Love them all Thanks to the other family and friends that also make everything possible Thanks to Redline, Shiner’s, Vans and Lloyds TSB Shout-out to Maurice and Steve Hassel, Jez Hayes and Jai Kemp Thanks for talking to us Jacob, and all the best for 2011 and the future!

Redline team manager Jai Kemp and 2 very fast racers Ayesha Mclelland and Jacob Roberts.

Jacob Roberts Always out front even when riding up a class, pure class!

I offer a huge shout out to both Steve Mateus and the entire Rockstar Energy Team for coming through with Free Agent’s title sponsorship for the next 3 years. It’s very refreshing to work with these guys – for one, they just “get it”, they’ve helped us raise the bar of professionalism and they’ve got great signature ideas in store for next year with Free Agent. Not to mention this company and group of guys stand behind our fallen soldier, Stephen Murray, 100% percent. It means a lot to have the opportunity to work with them because they do so much for the industry and the riders.

DALES DIRTWhat’s the latest!

Although we’ve wrapped up another successful summer of racing we’re still full-speed ahead here in the States. Seems like it’s been non-stop for some time now with Nationals, the World Cup in Chula Vista, the Vegas Bike Show, the World Cup in France and still more Nationals to come. Really organized chaos is just the way we like it.

Photo: Lew

is Wong

October saw the final UCI World Cup held in France. Yet another win for Maris Strombergs – his stream of wins just continues to grow, not only did Strombergs secure this year’s win at the UCI World Cup in France but he also grabbed the overall UCI World Cup Title for 2010! Maris the machine is non-stop and guided well (as we can all see) by his dedicated trainer and friend Ivo Lakucs. Marc Willers was hot on Strombergs’ heals as he grabbed 2nd at the France UCI World Cup and our very own (and USA Olympic hopeful) Connor Fields secured the 3rd spot on this year’s podium in France while also taking the 3rd overall UCI Title back to the States too! I’ve got to tell you, from a TM’s standpoint grabbing two podium spots and two overalls for this year’s UCI World Cup was pretty rad.

Following the race the UCI held its annual awards night and from the looks of the pictures on Facebook it appears it was a fun night for all. Sam Willoughby was awarded Rider of the Year by the UCI. While Willoughby is unquestionably a great rider I must admit I was a little surprised after Strombergs won the North American Continental Championship, the UCI Worlds and the UCI World Cup – but hey, it just shows us politics are alive and well in all sports today. Willoughby’s a great bloke and contender and we take our hats off to him for securing the Rider Of The Year Award.

Over here at Free Agent we’re already wrapping up our Team sponsor deals for 2011. It makes it much easier to both keep existing sponsors and rope in new ones when our team does as well as it has this year. We’re looking forward to unveiling a few new sponsors in the upcoming year as well

GT surprising cut Joey Bradford loose, which leaves a question mark on who will replace him. Looks like Mike Day may reappear back on GT in 2011 and will focus most efforts on qualifying for London. Word is that GT will also support an Amateur team alongside picking up another Pro or 2.

New Zealander, Marc Willers, looks like the current fast guy that should get a good ride by the end of the season. He’s made it known he wants to race in the States for the next few years and he’s also one of the few guys that has proven he can hit the podium in both regular racing and Supercross. It’s likely he will be a front runner in the London Olympic Games for New Zealand if he stays healthy.

French legend, Christophe Leveque, with USProbikes.com has added another company to his ever-growing list in the BMX Industry. Elevn Technologies www.elevnracing.com Pete Dylewski has been hired after a departure from VSI Products and looks like they will be shopping for a few new Pros for 2011 run. We’ll all have to stay tuned to see who they end up signing.

Well, that’s the dirt for this month, folks. Oh, but before we part, the rumor is that British Coach Grant is smiling all the way to the bank with $90K a year to train two riders?! I’ve got one word for you, Horrendous!

The Prodigal Son Returns...

This year the BFG had the passion, love and emotion knob turned up to the max, with the return of Stephen Murray to the UK for the first time since his life changing accident at the Dew Tour in Baltimore nearly 3 years ago. Because of this factor alone, I had to be there, along with my family. It’s hard to put into words what this moment meant to me and a whole bunch of BMX people here in the UK.

Stephen has been such a massive inspiration to everyone in BMX, his passion like Bob Fields is infectious, when you are in his company it’s a pure joy and we have to just hang on for the ride.

Stephen was really one of the first UK Dirt/Freestyle BMX’ers to take that massive journey to the West Coast of the USA, live the dream and find his fortune, like the gold prospectors of old.

The day he won Gold at the X Games will go down in history, the scrawny Geordie kid had made it to the big time. We were all so proud of him, the little lad who at 3 years old started racing BMX with his brother Martin and travelled the world, made friends for life and left his impact on all of us.

The love felt in the house at Crewe when we knew Stephen had arrived could have ended wars. It over-whelmed us, took a hold of us and gave us all a massive hug. When Stephen rolled out onto the 2nd berm, there was not a dry eye in the house. He told me to put my tears away, which just made me worse. I just wanted to hold him and tell him how much we love him. What a pleasure it was to introduce Stephen Murray to the crowd at Crewe, tough old hard bmx’ers cried when he spoke to the crowd, people even had to walk away after for a little tear on their own..

Stephen is like everyone’s son and brother all rolled up into one and it was so great to have him back. Stephen thanked everyone for all their support and how he loved the fact that racing was getting big again...

He then posed for a million photos and spent the day watching and enjoying the racing, chatting to everyone, he loved Paddy Sharrock getting rad over the pro double and the back flips Joe pulled.

Bob Field Grand’s @ Crewe August 2012

For those that don’t know what this event is all about, it’s a tribute to one of the UK’s great BMX characters, Bob Fields. He was no ordinary BMX Dad for sure; he was the driving force behind Crewe BMX Club in the late 80’s and 90’s. His passion was to be admired; his love of the riders and the sport just came natural to Bob. Everyone has a story to tell about Bob and this weekend is the one to remember not only for Bob, but all our long lost BMX Friends.

Bob Fields Grands Stephen Murray visitThis weekend had everything, its was a chilled race with no pressure away from the Nationals, riders doing it for fun and some cash on the line for the elite and pro open.

There were novices to kick us off and a great high jump comp on Saturday night.

There were some big hitters in the Elite ranks, Marcus Bloomfield, Fastlane’s Cal Strickland, Dan McBride, Kelvin Batey, Tre Whyte and some old faces as well as Shaun Fry, Warren Bankcroft and Alex Dick.

Most real riders will tell you the Crewe Track is a joy to ride, good, well crafted jumps and berms and the fact that you don’t have to pedal your tits off. C&K have done us proud. Paddy Sharrock was doing massive clicked X up’s over the Pro double every moto, a pure joy to watch, what’s he going to be like when he gets to 16?

The action in the motos and the pro open was intense, Ash Davey saw some berm carnage in turn 2 and looked like he had concussed himself after having the heave ho from Tricky Dicky, welcome to the pro ranks boy... Bloomy and Batey were having it in every moto fast as you like, it was off the hook and it was not even the finals.

The last straight was catching a few people out, no more than Profiles Billy Luckhurst who slammed into one of the jumps on the straight in the semi and then Ant Tuffs rode right into him, Billy’s DK frame was a mess and fit for nothing but the bin after.

Come finals time in the Elite and Pro Open it was Marcus Bloomfield that doubled out winning and taking the money, but Batey was not that far behind. Not to forget that Daz Reidy made that Open Final as well, which was a massive achievement for one in his later years, you could see by the smile on his face that he was stoked to be there.

The presentation followed with flowers and champagne and huge trophies for all.

It had been a great day, full of emotion and fun; we need more races like this in the calendar. It does not always have to be about points and pressure. Crewe BMX Club should win the award for the club with the biggest balls to put on an event like this, hopefully they would have broken even and shame on those that did not support it, but you will get your chance next year.

But as fate would have it, I would soon get hit hard by the cruiser bug again. While out of town with my girlfriend for a family thanksgiving dinner some two years ago, I convinced her to check out the local track. I had heard that there would be a local race that weekend but instead it was just an open practice with a few people taking laps. The track director offered me a loaner bike (a 20”) to ride and I took her up on her offer. It was a bit small but good enough to get the job done. Between laps, I began chatting with a local, seeing how cramped I was on the 20” he offered to let me try his Haro cruiser. I accepted his offer and took it for a spin. Wow! I suddenly realised what I was missing. It was so comfortable and fast I could not believe how good it felt. I was hooked.

Two weeks later I was in the local bike shop picking up a cruiser for myself. After that, a quick internet search revealed an indoor BMX series that was starting up and I found myself nervously returning to the race scene after a hiatus longer than I care to admit.

What I discovered was some of the most fun times I have ever had on a BMX bike. Sure it can be competitive when you race cruiser, you could be racking up with a former top-level expert that “still has it” to a newbie trying out the sport after watching his kids do it. You never know. What you will find, rest assured, is people having the time of their lives on their big bikes.

Back in the day when all the kids in my neighbourhood raced the Hutch Pro Racers was the bike of choice. Chrome-plated 4130 pieces of 1980s era BMX technology. If you didn’t have a Hutch bike you were either saving your pennies for one or trying to convince your parents why buying a Hutch for you was the most important thing ever.

When I finally got my Hutch Pro Racer frame I was stoked beyond belief, my brother and I put it together after I got home from school and I raced it that very same night. I can’t remember how I placed but I do remember loving that bike, to me it was the best thing ever. I would go riding after a night of racing, you couldn’t pry me off that thing… I just loved being on my bike.

After a while I noticed that some people at the races were getting more riding time in than me, the people with cruisers. One kid in my neighbourhood had both a 20” and a 24” Hutch, to say I was envious was an understatement. Not only was he racing his age class and open, he got to race the cruiser class as well. Since I was only racing my age class he was racing 3 times as much as me! I felt robbed! That Hutch Cruiser was my nemesis, a chrome beacon to the fun I was not having. To me Cruisers were another chance to race, to have even more time on your bike. I think at that point the seed was planted that I would one day get a cruiser.

Over the years I got into freestyle and jumping and pushed the idea of riding cruisers out of mind. Cruisers weren’t made for serious riding was the common thinking.

For the second year running the Brits were held at the superb Broadway House venue at Cheddar. Excellent facilities making me think that we could do with a few more places like these, especially as the sport keeps growing. How about a site like Broadway House in every region, if anyone reading this wants to build one in the South, somewhere near Dover would be great!

On to the action and Saturday saw the Cruiser racing. This was a move that raised a few eyebrows when it was announced that this was how it was going to be, however, the proof is in the pudding and all that meant that quite a few were converted in the end. A good decision when you see how many riders came down, heaven knows what time we would have been racing until if things were all crammed in to Sunday.

Of the 780 riders that descended on Cheddar that weekend, around 100 were doing double duty on 20 inch and Cruiser. This made the final entry total a staggering 878.

The youngest Cruiser class went the way of Paddy Sharrock who was among those who were not finished with their weekends work. The same could be said of Jimmy Orena who stormed to victory in the 13 to 14s.

Jack Hall, fresh from his party piece at Bournemouth National showed he is just as good a rider as he is an entertainer, when he finished ahead of Toby Bearne and Bradley Minns in the 15 to 16s.

What can you say about the line up in 17 to 29’s; Elite riders Liam Phillips, Tre and Dan Whyte taking on National Series winner Ryan Bauer, runner up and UCR Finelines team mate Mark Maddox, Stockingford’s Latvian Maris Strazdins, Josh Souto and Andy Clucas made it a quality line up. In the end it was Liam who made it National title number nineteen, finishing ahead of the Whytes (Dan second, Tre Third). Mark Maddox was fourth.

“I love it when plan comes together” screamed Uncle Buck down the mic as his Hungarian Hawks brothers, Adam and Zoltan Buday made it a club and country one-two in the 30 to 34 years. Dave Ives was third and Matt Barnard in fourth.

Alan Hill was the only rider to win two National Series titles in 2010, and was looking for another double starting in the Cruisers 35 to 39 years. By Saturday night the first half of the job was done, as he took the title, with Clive Hawkins and Ian Sharp back in third.

Dramatic would be one word to describe the 40 to 44 years final, with Bernie Schale making an excellent start and continuing his lead going to the end of the second straight. However, Jon Moore was not going to let his Bournemouth club mate go, and Jon made the move up Bernie’s inside, which was real eye of the needle stuff. This saw enough contact to send Bernie to the floor, bringing down Paul Maidment as well. This left the rest of the race with Moore out in front to take the title to go with his National Series, ahead of Michael Gough, Karl Sanderson and Kevin Brown.

Dialled Bikes were celebrating a double after Jon’s win, when Keith Wilson got the better of Mad Ady and the returning Shaun Calvert to take the honours in the 45’s and over’s.

Finally for Saturday’s action, how could I not mention the Ladies 25 plus which saw a really good turnout and it was Ria Goodman who landed the title, with Kim Bent in second and Nikki Spiers in third.

After the racing, we had the very important business of the National presentation; Liam Phillips and Marcus Bloomfield were on hand to dish out the trophies, not to mention their sponsors from Tibboh. This was before Bloomy picked up his own award for elite men series winner.

Special mention goes to Alex and Ryan Brookes for getting suited up for the occasion. Proper class boys!

Brits 2010

After a busy weekend on the mic, Fastlane have asked me to pick the bones out of an action packed weekend at the 2010 British BMX Championships, so here we go deep breath and get your reading gear around this.

So with Saturdays action done, those who were chilling out on Sunday, retired for the night down at the bar (when I say that just about everyone ended up down there!), true professionals that we are!

Page 39: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

39

Another treat of the Brits at Cheddar, both 2009 and this year, how lucky have we been with the conditions. A bright weekend with little or no wind.

Page 40: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

40

Sundays programme started with the Brits tradition of the riders oath, perfectly read out by Charlotte Green, which did she feel more pressure doing? The rider’s oath or her main final in Championship women, either way it didn’t show, as she took her title back with a commanding lap. Charlie Phillips made it a South West one - two in second spot, with Ayesha McClelland and Emily James doing it for the south in third and fourth.

A question for you reading this, which final do you think you would have gone home talking about most; Elite or Junior Men or Championship Women perhaps. How about a ten pound bet before the weekend started on 7 to 8 year old girls. This was explosive; the battle at the front was brilliant enough. Darcie Taylor was out in front, but was having her lead cut down all the time by Imogene Hill. By the final straight both girls were level pegging, looking as if the camera would have to separate them. Then disaster struck just yards from the line, as both riders made contact sending both to the ground. Morgan Dorrell, Mollie Foster and Ellie Featherstone were in behind but couldn’t avoid the carnage before them. Suddenly the race became a ten yard scramble, and in the end it was a photo finish between Isabel Hines and Megan Nevard, with Isabel being given the title. Awesome action and glad to say all the riders got up ok.

Page 41: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

41

More carnage from the girls came in the 13 and 14s, with Izzy Fer-rada trying to play catch up on the first turn, made a move up the inside, but it didnt pay off as she hit the deck. This collected another of the pre race favourites Valerie Zebrokova, glad to say both girls got up eventually. This left Bethany Campbell out in front to finish ahead of last year’s champ Jennifer Noble, with Antonia Rickett third.

No such drama in the 6 and under girls, as Emily Hutt took the win to go with her National Series title, with Molly O’Laughlin second and Emma Jeffers in third.

Another National winner doubled up at the Brits in the 9 to 10s, with Kim Baptista taking the title after going past Mary Johnson. Olivia Howard filled the other podium spot in third.

The host region were celebrating in the 11 to 12s, as Lauren Stack and Alesi Tye were one and two, with Katie Plumb for East Anglia back in third.

Bethan Hallett was another South West Champion, as she went home with the 15 to 16 years for T & J Racing. Emma Lambley and Alice Law were the other podium fillers under Grand Prix points.

Elite 2010 British Champion Kelvin “O” Batey

It was a great weekend at the Brits, one of the best and most memorable that I’ve ever had in the UK both on and off the track. I’d said after the Worlds that winning the Brits was going to be one of my targets for the rest of the season as its always been my favourite race of the year and a title that means a lot to me.

The atmosphere throughout the whole weekend was amazing but getting on the gate for our final was awesome. You could feel the anticipation of everyone waiting to see how it was all going to pan out.

I got a real good start after a good talk with Ash in the build up to the race. He just got my head where it needed to be and I just felt real confident even before I placed my wheel on the gate. After the start everything else just flowed down the first straight although I did touch with Bloomy slightly before the first jump. I took the lead into the first turn but Dan Whyte caught my back wheel which made my brakes clamp onto the rim all the way around. Luckily I had enough out of the first turn to hold a decent lead to the finish.

The feeling coming across the line was amazing and something I’ll always remember. It was a good finish to the season after lots of ups and downs on the domestic front through 2010. It was made that bit more special with the crowds reaction straight after the race, some of the team riders and Benn running onto the track when I was celebrating, going back down to the finish line to see Emily and then getting on the podium for the presentation. It was a great day.

Ready for a weekend of all emotions, Cheddar, the Brits had arrived once again. When I found out Abbie wasn’t racing I knew that I had every chance of winning, I knew I could do it and there wasn’t anyone stopping me. I felt comfortable with the track but wasn’t in any way over confident, as anything can happen in a BMX race. The feeling of winning the title back felt great and I hope next year will be filled with more of the same greatness and happiness.

Charlee Green

2010 Championship winner Charlotte Green

Page 44: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

44

The boy’s finals started with the 6 and under and it was another National number one out in front here, as Jack Hawkins led home William Goode and Cory Maggs to double up at the Brits. National positions, however, were reversed in the 7s with Keon Smith- McDermot taking the 01 plate ahead of Ethan Craik, these two are definitely ones to watch in the coming years.

Eight year olds served up some great racing in 2010 with a close finish in the National Series and plenty were in with a shout in the final here. Kobi Joyce who powered away to lead from start to finish, with fellow South rider Matthew Hutt in second and National winner Ryan O’Laughlin third. Looks like this age group will continue the quality racing throughout 2011.

Another rider who has been in terrific form this year is Ross Cullen and he took his British title to match his National win for the North. Josh Peters was second and Joshua Coppin back in third.

How good are the Orena boys; Gideon and Jimmy continue to sweep all before them in the 10 and 13 year olds respectively. Gideon landed the 10s by finishing well clear of Euan Hunt and Lewis Locker, while Jimmy added to his Cruiser title the previous day, with Jordan Hatcher second and Jack Clarke third.

Quillan Isidore was behind Jimmy Orena in the Cruisers on Saturdy, but got a Brits title of his own by winning the 14 years final. Michael ‘The Ninja’ Njuguna was second with Taylor Andrews third.

A semi final in the 15 years was dramatic, as finishing in the top four was not good enough for Dan Pullen and George Warner, as they both went for the win, only to see both riders crash out on the last straight. Jacob Roberts, was riding back in his own age after taking the 16 year olds National Series and cruised to victory, with Ryan Stack, Shane Dean and Bradley Minns in behind.

Page 45: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

45

Seventeen to twenty four’s final started with a crash as Bradley Watts, Billy Luckhurst and ‘Who Is’ Ash Davey all hit the floor. This left Jason Fay to lead the field home, holding off Robbie Goodman, Maris Strazdins and Shaun Issit.

Jack Hall looked to add to his Cruiser title, but it all went wrong for him as he crashed out in the 16s. This left Adam Smith coming through to win with Jordan Perry and Toby Bearne fill-ing the top three.

Page 46: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

46

Benjamin Martinez was leading the 25 to 29s final when Michael Pinnock forced his way up the inside, a move which saw the big fella relegated to eighth by the referees.

Matthew Allen had by now moved in to the lead anyway as he took the title from a great result for Darren Eastall in second, with third place going to Lee Carrick.

Veterans saw a turn in fortunes for Bernie Schaale as he got the British title after his crash the day before. Neil Hopes and Kevin Brown were second and third.

Alan Hill and Clive Hawkins were the top two again in Masters, after they had got the same positions in the Cruisers the day before. Zoltan Buday got his second podium finish of the weekend in third.

Junior Male had a final of National Series winner Grant Hill, runner up Jordan Hayes, Ryan and Thomas Bauer, Chuck Manaton, Ben Clarkson, Sam Richardson and Jonathan Hastings.

Hill had got into a good lead out of the gate and already had everyone in his trail. Jordan Hayes saw it all go wrong for him on turn one this left Hill out on his own to take the title. Manaton rode a blinder for second, with Hastings getting the third spot.

Page 47: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

47

Plenty of questions were to be answered in Elite Men. Could Liam Philips win his twentieth British title? Will Bloomy double up after his National Series win? Or could Kelvin Batey make it three Elite British titles on the bounce.

The first Semi saw crashes for Luke Gamble and Adam Brazil, this left Kelvin Batey and Dan Whyte going through along with Arran Shrosbree and the Dutch-man Noud Verstegen. More crashing came in the second semi, Rick Van Den Dikkenberg, Kyle Evans, Scott Waterhouse and Alex Dick all getting wiped out on the final corner, with all riders in with a shout of going through. This left Liam, Bloomy, Dan Mc Bride and another rider from the Netherlands, Jesper De Groot all booking their place in the final.

The crashing theme continued in the final, as we lost Bloomy and Liam in the first straight, this left Kelvin out in front being chased by Dan McBride and Dan Whyte. The chase was in vain though as Batey took his third consecutive Elite Brits win, with McBride a great second and equally Whyte in third. Arran Shrosbree came home ahead of the Dutch riders Verstegen and De Groot.

To summarise the rest of the awards, The South won best region of the weekend, and it was a double, as Hayes Hawks won top club.

A fantastic weekend’s action other than those who sadly had to be hospitalized, I think that anyone who had any complaints on the racing should go and try some-thing else. After the doubts about Cruisers being placed on Saturdays, that looks like it’s here to stay. As the sport continues to grow its any ones guess how many will be at the Brits in 2011. See you again next year!!!

chulaVISTARound 3 of the Supercross series rolled into Chula Vista California, the home of the US Olympic training centre. Being the best training facility in the States, and the home of the US squad, American domination should have been on the cards.

With the event coinciding with the British Championships in Cheddar (featured in this issue), it also meant that there would be no repeat performance from Liam Phillips who placed the red white and blue on the podium in the previous round in Copenhagen, or for Shanaze Reade to make amends for her semi-final exit.

Unlike many other events, round 3 was held under floodlight, making for quite a spectacle and new challenges for all, not least the level of moisture in the air, calling for blowers on the start hill and a towel down between quarters and semis.

In the first women’s semi-final Mariana Pajon got the snap and led out a swarm of blue! Pottier of France took second place, whilst the USA’s Ariel Martin and Amanda Geving fought right to the line to take the last two spots of the podium for the host nation.

Semi-final number 2 was billed as Le Corguille v Post, France V USA. It was the on form Laetitia Le Corguille, winner of the first two rounds who took it from Alise Post, whilst Lauren Reynolds and Brooke Crain took the final spots to make it a 50% US final.

Page 50: Fastlane BMX Magazine Issue 8

50

As is usually the case, when Strombergs is first into turn 1, he is gone. Long showed great determination, fighting all the way in a duel with Willoughby which culminated in the American coming out on top in a drag to the finish line, with Daudet of France taking the final transfer position.

In the second semi Jimenz Caicedo had a bad gate, followed by a nose bonk before wiping Joey Bradford out in turn 1. This made it just 6 riders in contention for the last 4 spots, which went to Marc Willers, followed by reigning junior world champion Sylvain Andre, Ramiro Marino and Jelle Van Gorkon.

Now the main event and what a final it was, saving the best till last.

First of all Strombergs hits the gate preventing him from running off into the distance and then heading into turn 2, Andre buoyed by his success in the semi, decided he no longer liked following Willers, getting his elbows out and sending him over the berm. Despite his bad start you would be a fool to discount Strombergs, the tough Latvian along with his Aussie counterpart Willoughby took advantage of Andre’s tussle. All the while Nick Long was bidding his time and waiting to strike, and strike he did as the two favourites battled in the last turn, cutting low and keeping his speed he out dragged Willoughby to the line for the second time in succession, but this time the rewards were much sweater, clinching an amazing victory.

In the final Le Corguille fought hard to remain undefeated, leading a tightly packed midfield from start to finish. Eager to make it a French 1-2 Pottier rode hard leaning on Post in turn 1 giving her the edge and that is how they would remain until the end, despite Post’s best efforts.

Unlike the women’s event the men would not see the expected US dominance, with the host nation’s athletes struggling to get out of the quarter-finals. The reason for this? Well the action was tight so the slightest mistake was pounced upon by 7 hungry adversaries. Despite the home advantage, there have also been more than a few visitors to Chula Vista track, with it often being hired out by other national squads for training and many pros basing them self out of the States, so their advantage wasn’t as strong as maybe some other host nations would have.

In semi-final number 1 Nick Long was the lone US rider, but all attention was on the two favourites for the victory, Marris Strombergs and Sam Willoughby, this was an opportunity to take a psychological advantage, with the pressure weighing on Willoughby’s shoulders, having gone out in the semi’s in Copenhagen.

Redditch Premiers BMX Club have secured some sponsorship from local Toyota dealers Westlands of Bromsgrove . The Club said “It’s great that local businesses like Westlands can support sports facilities in the local area. Westlands have really done their bit for our community. We have been desperate for some BMX race Club bikes and Westlands have helped us get the ball rolling with this with their generous donation”.

Also playing their part in this is our good old friends over at the Source www.sourcebmx.com and Intense Bicycles www.intensebmx.com They have also supported the Club by heavily discounting the club bikes. The Bikes paid for by Westlands are to loan out to and encourage young beginners from the local community who would like to have a go but maybe haven't got the equipment required. These will be used mainly during our Club sessions.

Another big bit of news from Redditch Premiers BMX Club.....Now the nights are drawing in, they will very soon be holding Floodlit Club sessions from 6pm till 9pm on certain week nights to be agreed. So get yourselves over to Redditch's premier facility over the winter for the only floodlit gates session in the Midlands. Check out their blog for updates on this www.redditchpremiersbmxclub.blogspot.com/ Time for a clips debate???

News from the Midlands Region.....It looks like the old Clips debate is about to rear its ugly head again..... After the Midlands AGM earlier this year a proposal for a ban on clips at Regional races to all Riders under 16 years old was put forward to the BMX Commission. Forward to now and its AGM time for the Commission, and the proposal will be considered by them, but only after all Regions, and Club Coaches have been given the chance to give their feedback on this, so it is likely that this feedback will have a big bearing on the Commission's decision. What do you think?? or Shouldn't I asked!!! Worms and a can come to mind!

This is definitely causing waves amongst TM’s, and has been a hot

topic on bmxtalk. You can see why too, I guess as it will effect a lot

of teams. The main fear I think is that Sponsors will cut teams down,

which will mean less support for riders, potentially at the expense of

Cruiser and Female riders. The commission are giving all TM’s there chance to have a say. So

its a case of wait and see what the Commission decide upon once all

the feedback has been considered. They met on 24th November, but I

have a feeling that you haven’t heard that last of this one!!That funnily enough leads me nicely on to another Team related

issue. Which Factory Team did actually win this year’s British

Championship Team Title???........ You may well have heard that after the presentation at this year’s

British Championships, where Ultimate BMX where awarded the

Team title, other Teams queried the result. This led to an investigation

by Roger W at BC, and points were supposedly corrected to this......

RANK NAME TOTAL=1 Dialled Bikes FT 210.5=1 Ultimate BMX 210.53 SE Racing 206.04 EA Pure Racing 205.55 Team Dirtsport 204.56 Redline 203.57 Kuwahara UK 200.08 Intense Route 55 197.0 Phew!!!!! I'm glad that got straightened out......

So Dialled Bikes and Ultimate BMX tied for the Title ay!!!!!!

Well you would think so, but NOPE!! The points were still

collated wrong even after an investigation.

This is in fact the correct top 8 Teams from the 2010 British Championships.... RANK NAME TOTAL=1 Dialled Bikes FT 210.5=1 Intense Route 55 210.5=1 Ultimate BMX 210.54 SE Racing 206.05 EA Pure Racing 205.56 Team Dirstsport 204.57 Redline 203.58 Kuwahara UK 200.0

Speaking of the BMX Commission.....Another potentially controversial proposal is due to be decided upon very soon. The proposal is to change the criteria for Team points...

?So who actually claims the title

???

We are awaiting confirmation on this from BC,

and will update you on this in the next issue.

This issue we go behind the lens with one of BMX racings’ most well known photographer/journalists, Jerry Mania as he is sometimes called is the man behind the worlds number 1 BMX racing website BMXMANIA.comNot stopping there, Jerry’s shots also fill the pages of this here fine magazine. Personally I don’t think anyone has given more to photographing and promoting BMX racing than this man. I won’t ever be able to thank him enough for all the help he has given me in making my dreams a reality... Fastlane BMX

Name Jerry LandrumAge – Older than mostOccupation – BMX Journalist Web site www.bmxmania.com

So without further ado let’s meet the man himself.

Hey Jerry well this is an odd one, we have sent many emails and downloaded and up loaded many a photos but have never met in the flesh. I feel like we have become very good friends in this time.It was your birthday the other day 64 years young, so how long have you been into BMX racing?Jerry Sez – I started racing in 1985, so it’s been 25 years, now.

Where you any good at racing back then or now?Jerry Sez – I’ve always enjoyed my racing, and did get pretty good at it pretty quick. My first year, I ended up Indiana NBL State #2 in 35 & Over Cruiser. I’ve been ranked as high as National #2 in both the NBL and the ABA and have consistently been in the top ten, nationally in my cruiser classes over the years. I made the semi at Brighton in 1996, so I’ve had some good times on the track. I still ride a couple times a week at my local track, but don’t race nationals anymore due to my photography responsibilities. I can still pull twelve year olds to the first turn if they’re not too fast, but mostly I just like riding my cruiser.

What about taking photos at the races, when did this start and did it stem from BMX racing or from photography or both?Jerry Sez – I’ve been shooting semi pro since 1966 and had worked with many different magazines, newspapers and organizations in the past, so when I started racing BMX, it was a natural for me to begin shooting right away. I’ve always enjoyed chronicling what happens at the races, trying to capture the moment, getting the feel of the vibe of the races. I’ve done tons of slide shows for different events, shot for a half dozen different magazines, edited my own ‘zine’ back in the day, provided hundreds of photos for different BMX companies of their riders and of course, shot gazillions of photos for my web site, BMXmania.com. I rarely get tired of shooting BMXers and don’t feel like I’m done yet. What about Bmx Mania, when and how did this come about?Jerry Sez – In 1996, I sprouted the idea of starting up my own web site, since at that time, I couldn’t find any web site anywhere online about BMX Racing, so I bought a goofy little software program and started up BMX Mania. I’m pretty sure that Mania is the second BMX web site that I know of. New Jersey BMX was the first one, Shane Jenkins’ BMXultra.com came right after Mania and many more quickly opened up. I never get tired of working on my site, I love it

Best things about doing BMX mania?Jerry Sez – Definitely the people that I get to meet. It’s allowed me a platform that has enabled me to meet so many people at the highest levels of BMX and count them as friends. AMAZING! One of the coolest things to me is when I’m at a race and someone comes up to me and sez, “I just wanted to tell you, ‘I love your site, it’s my ‘Home Page’ on my computer”, or “I just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do for the sport.” That REALLY means a lot to me, that’s for sure. Another big thing to me is that it allows me to get to some of the best races in the world!

We will get to the photography but there’s a whole lot more to Jerry. You’re also involved with a few cool products, care to tell us about these?Jerry Sez – I’ve worked with Tektro / TRP doing U.S. BMX National promotions and advertising since 1996. It’s been a fun deal for me, we’ve done some cool stuff for the riders. Right now we sponsor world class Donny Robinson and market a sweet ‘Signature’ Brake for DR that was designed from the ground up as a BMX racing brake / lever combo as opposed to a MTB brake made by a fishing company.

I also work part time as the Team and Rider Sponsorship guy at Alienation BMX. I live in Warsaw, Indiana where Sun Rims used to be headquartered. They got bought by Hayes Brakes and moved to Wisconsin but the two key players at Sun, ‘Zee Boss’, Zach Taylor and his sales / sponsorship guy, Ryan Birk didn’t want to leave our community. It ended up that Ryan now runs Answer BMX from here and Zach started Alienation BMX, so we’re pretty lucky at our local track to have all three (Alienation, Answer & BMX Mania) at local practices.>

Worst things about doing BMX Mania?Jerry Sez – It eats up SO MUCH TIME! Sometimes I get messed up on doing things that I should be doing for the home or one of my other jobs and I’m sitting there editing another article for the site, or going back and fishing around in fotos from several races ago that I still hadn’t gotten to take a look at closely.

Where do you see BMX Mania going in the future?Jerry Sez – I see a strong future for BMX Mania. I want to continue to cover the big races around the world consistently and see no reason that I should not provide the BMX world with daily updates of BMXracing news.

1: AlienBees B800 Ex-ternal Flash – Need more light indoors and need to take shadows out of faces outdoors.

2: Alien Bees CyberSync System to remote trigger two external flashes, cuz they’re inexpensive and just as good as the alternative.

3: Canon L Series Wide Angle like I have but F 2.8 instead of F4 – Need to free me up this year, indoors.

4: Canon L Series Tel-ephoto lens like I have but F 2.8 instead of F4 – See above.

5: A real camera back pack to replace my ‘old friend’ Fly backpack – I’ve always used a Fly Backpack to carry my camera stuff because it’s pretty minimalistic and the Fly pack had plenty of room for non photo stuff, but they don’t make that size/style anymore so I need to ‘grow up’ in to a Lowe or Tamrac or some-thing like that, but I’ve never wanted to carry a ‘real’ photo backpack, I kinda don’t like them, but I’m moving in that direction.

What about Fastlane BMX Magazine, you have really helped us out?Jerry Sez – Fastlane BMX ROCKS! Dave (You!) does a GREAT job and it’s obvious, it’s a passion that is being pursued, and that runs in my Fast Lane, and I like driv-ing in the Fast Lane! You’ve got GREAT photographers, good coverage of big races world wide (Thank you!), good U.K. and Euro coverage, great interviews, product reviews, it’s all there, God bless you for providing the fans with a GREAT mag. BMX Magazines RULE and Fastlane Rules in BMX Racing!

I really could rattle the questions out but I’m going to leave that till we finally meet. Soooo photography, equipment, now I know you’re a canon 1d man?Jerry Sez – Sorry to interrupt, but I just added a Canon 7D to my arsenal, I love that little camera, plus, it’s nice to be able to carry two cameras with a ‘tele’ on one and a wide angle lens on the other at the same time. Nice for finals at Supercross races!

What’s your favourite lens to mate it with and why?Jerry Sez – Right now my favs are two Canon L Series (Good Glass!) lenses. A sweet 17-40 wide angle zoom and I can reach out and touch you with my newest buddy, Mr. 70-200 telephoto. Unfortunately, the BMX Mania Bookkeeping Department wouldn’t allow for the f 2.8 models (much more expensive) so I had to settle for the f 4 models, I’ll have to be a bit more creative at indoor races, but I plan on minimizing that problem with some high wattage lighting here soon.

What in your eyes makes a great racing shot? Jerry Sez – Right now, I personally like the “You Can See Eyes Wide Open, Close Up”. I like a little Wide Angle distortion, ‘see em thru the goggles”, mouth wide open, sweat on the forehead, kind of stuff. I got a shot of Michal Prokop once in Fréjus, that almost un-nerved me it was so clean, so close, so cool! Emotional moment.

I like to use unusual croppings sometimes. I call em Band Aid crops, cuz they’re shaped like a band aid. I also love the 8 rider wide action shot, everybody’s in the air over a first straight jump where you’ve got riders at different angles of jumping, it’s just so definitive of the coolness of high speed jump oriented BMX racing that we have today, like I say, sometimes I get emotional over it.

Two other aspects to this question, (Blah Blah Blah….Sorry!) When I was shooting the Olympics, I was on the start hill during practice and wanted to get something “different” I laid down right behind lane 8 and shot some close up/wide angle gate start shots, and I got a shot of Luke Madill ripping out of the gate and that’s been one of my favourite angles ever since.

Two seasons ago, I started seeing a cute female with a camera at the UCI SX races following Shanaze Reade around and when I saw what Corinne Walder was doing with the resulting photos, I was floored! She’s inspired me to be more creative with different angles, different expressions, different post processing to give things a different look than just the usual “Here They Come On A Sunny Day With Fill Flash” type of shot that most of us get. I think that “stylizing” mentality results in great racing shots. Thanks Corinne!

> I love working for Alienation. It fits well with my BMX Mania race schedule and Zach’s a great boss. We’re takin’ over, Sun’s a shell of what it was when those guys ran it, our stuff is the greatest. We’ve got some of the best riders ever running our stuff. Nobles, Madill, Mariana, Upshaw, Sifiso, Ramiro, Allier, the UCI BMX SX guys, The Aussie Team, The New Zealand Team, Lubbe, the list goes on and on and it’s growing all the time, Alienation BMX Rules!

Anyone you would like to give a mention to?Jerry Sez – My wife, who is the most understanding and helpful friend I could ever have, my Lord & Saviour, Jesus Christ who turned a scruffy dope smoking hippy in to the scruffy, BMXing, Child of God I am today! (I’m the hippest old guy at our church!) Bob Tedesco, who helped me more than probably any person in BMX, the Tektro Gang, Dale at Free Agent, Flex at BMX World mag, Pro Gate Pierce, Johan “The Innova-tor” Lindstrom, Ritz/Matti/Corinne, Dan & Kari Rumple, Rich Kellstrom, Christophe & his team, Shane Jenkins, Christian Van Groenendaal, Herve & Maria, UCI Thomas, ALL of the REAL Elites, my BMX Mania Team Riders who I’ve sponsored, my daughter Rachel who helped me SO much with all my different BMX projects, The Greatest Pro Of All Time Eric Rupe & Big Daddy’s Caddy Mike, “The Champ” Warwick Stevenson, Uncle Buck, Jeff Morgan, Papa A, Kevin O’Brien, Erma (Dave) and Polly, Linda D & Roger P, Redman & Jim Riley, Don and the NBL crew, the ever professional ABA National Team, Torsten and the UCI Timing Crew, Emma, Jon & Sandy, Pete D. all of my infield foto buddies, Jack McD, Flex/Warwick, Rich M, Pat N, Mark S. BMX Mania Team Rider, Shannon Taylor at Alienation BMX ad shoot, Hire Park BMX.

One of my favs, Shanaze Reade wins the 2008 UCI Worlds in China.

Any favourite riders to shoot?Jerry Sez – Anybody who ‘helps’ me take a good photo. Some riders know when the photo guy is at a good position for stylish shots and they know what to do. I’ll probably make some guys mad at me for leaving them out, but over the years, two of the best for me have been Barry Nobles and Josh Meyers. Those guys always seem to end up right in front of the lens at the right time, and they’re both funny when it comes to striking a pose or pulling a funny face. Most people wouldn’t think of Maris Strombergs for his stylishness but he’s always in front of me doing a little turn down (Current cover of Fastlane) or a little tweekage here or there. Nothing killer but he’s loosened up a bit for someone whose nickname is “The Machine”. He can interject humour in to things well, just like I said above about the posing/face making. All of the “Real Elites” that I see on a regular basis are fun to shoot, our BMX Pros are an awesome and talented lot for sure and easy to shoot!

Do people play up to you because they know who you are?Jerry Sez – Not negatively. Not like “Hey, I’m only talking with you to suck up and get my photo on Mania” kind of thing. I think that most people that ride at the Elite level are familiar with BMX Mania and we kind of “know” each other already, ya know. Maybe some do try to ‘suck up’ but I don’t care, they’re all just kids on bikes anyway, what’s not to like about them, they’re some of the most talented athletes in the world, they deserve any notoriety they can get.

Any tips for budding young BMX race photographers? Jerry Sez – Shoot at high shutter speeds, even with flash, and don’t stand so far away unless you’re really zoomed in with a good lens. Read the manual that came with our camera! Know how to use your equipment. I still feel like I learn something almost every time I go the track with my camera.

Jerry thanks for the interview and all your help. The world of BMX racing sure is a brighter place with you in. Check out www.bmxmania.com

Let’s face it girls racing has had some lean times in recent years, and it would be fair to say it’s had its critics in that time. Having said all that you can’t ignore the fact the things are definitely on the up in the female classes. Numbers are on the rise, the racing is getting more and more competitive and riders are getting faster and more skilful. Riders like Abbie Taylor, Charlotte Green, Emily James and Ayisha McClelland are putting on a great show for the fans, and there are some younger riders coming up fast behind them. This young lady is certainly one of those. With a great 2010 behind her, what does the future hold for Bethany Campbell.

What a great year you have had, care to tell us about it? Yeah it’s been great! At the first national I was well motivated and when I won the first moto that set me on a high and made me more determined to continue with the results. It was all going well until at a regional race whilst racing 14 year old boys I came off and broke my wrist, and I thought that my national title had been lost. Luckily, after some laser treatment and missing Gosport National I finished with some good results at Bournemouth, and the title was secured:) My worst result this year in a National Final has been a second, so all in all it’s been a great year!

What meant more to you this year 01 or National Champion? Hmm… Probably National Champion because I’ve had 01 before, and National Champ is over the year so you have to win more than one race. Rich Camm at Urban Air has supported you this year. How did you come to ride for Urban Air? Well after Lauren Smith moved to Dialled Bikes they needed another rider and I was put forward by Lauren... Thanks Lauren!:) I bet Rich was pretty stoked with your results this year? Yeah, hope I’ve done you proud Rich!:) You’ve been running a 2010 Intense Podium frame this year, how have you found that? Yeah it’s great. The first time I rode it round Peterborough, people were already saying I looked faster! It’s so smooth, I love it. After the pink Felt I tried a few different frames and the Intense just felt right.

Which age category are you going to race in 2011 and what are your goals? I’m thinking of staying in my own age group, 15-16 female. What’s the rush in moving up so quickly? I’m going to Kortrijk in January, and I’m hoping to compete in some other European Races. Nationally, in the 15-16 age group I’d love to finish with a top three ranking, but my main aim will be to qualify for the 2012 world championships!

What’s the banter like in the pens amongst the girls, is it a serious and tense atmosphere, or do you all have a good chinwag? Ha ha, well I’d say we all have a good chinwag and keep the atmosphere quite relaxed. It starts turning serious when it’s only a few races until ours. There has been a definite upturn in the number of girls racing over the last couple of years, what would you attribute this to? I think that with Shanaze competing in the Olympics 2008 proved to a lot of girls that it’s a sport for girls as well as boys, and this has resulted in more girls coming to race.

Who are the ones to watch for 2011 out of all the female age groups? I think Shekinah Parrish will be one to watch in the 13-14 female category, I’m pretty sure she’s going to give the more experienced girls a good run for their money! I think Mollie Foster within the younger girls will be one to look out for too..

Name Bethany Campbell Any nickname Nope, not that I know of… Age 14 Sponsors Urban Air Much respect to Rich Camm he’s helped a lot this year.

When did you start racing, and how did you get started? I started when I was 9 years old. My dad did racing back in the 80’s, and he took me and my brother to Peterborough BMX track on mountain bikes... We then bought a Haro to share, and from then on we were both pretty much hooked!

What do you remember about your first race? It was at Peterborough, and I was sharing a bike with my brother that was quite small for me. I was racing Izzy Ferrada who came top 3, and I came last... What sort of training do you do and have you got a plan for this winter? Yes I do have a plan, but I’d better ask Simon and Jonny if I can give away any of our secrets... aha... You and your family have a fair bit to do with Peterborough Phantoms BMX Club don’t you? How did that come about and what roles do you all play within the Club? Yes we do. My dad used to race for Peterborough back when it was called ‘Peterborough Pirates’ and that is what got my parents involved with the club, with my dad now being Club Secretary. Any plans in the pipeline for Peterborough in 2011, track changes, a National maybe? Peterborough has applied for a National in 2011. However this may depend on whether we can get enough money from the council, because the council are being pretty tight with money. Not much will be changed to the track now; it’s in pretty good condition there are just a few tweaks to the 2nd straight to be done. :)

Who is your favourite female rider of all time and your favourite male rider of all time and why? My favourite female rider of all time would have to be Shanaze Reade, she’s fast and technical and shows the boys how it’s done. My favourite male rider of all time would have to be Kelvin Batey, not only is he super-fast and super-smooth but I’ve had a couple of training sessions with him which have definitely paid off.

What other things do you like to do when you’re not racing? I try my best to balance racing and training with my social life. I go out a lot with mates to the cinema or just out and about, and love to shop spending mum and dad’s money. (haha) I’ve recently had a go at the velodrome and it’s been a great experience, I’m definitely up for doing it again! What’s playing on your Ipod at the minute? Lots of different stuff really! Bit of Dubstep, then the odd Eminem song thrown in with some Pendulum, Katy Perry, Katy B and Cee Lo Green! Thanks for taking time to talk to Fastlane Bethany have you got any final words or thank yous? Just want to say thanks to Rich, he’s been a good help all year and I hope I’ve done him proud. Also to Simon and Jonny Hastings who have been doing some training with me and have been really helping me throughout the year, thanks a lot and to my friend Tiff Dunworth... She wanted her name in a magazine. ;) Beth:)x

If there are girls reading this now that are thinking of

giving racing a go, from one girl to another what words of

encouragement would you have for them? Just go for it! You’ll start making loads of new friends,

it’s such an exciting sport, the adrenaline rush you get is unreal...

GATE OF EIGHT: Imagine you can pick any 7 other riders from past or present day to share the gate with in your all time greatest line up, who would they be? Give a brief description of why you have selected those riders?

“Stu Thompsen”: He was my hardest rider to beat during my best years. We had great battles and enjoyed all of them, a big strong guy with a lot of riding talent.

“Maris Stromberg” Because he is the best right now so why not? “Harry Leary” Another rider I had great battles with. I felt comfortable jumping and riding elbow to elbow with this guy. A great bike handler but off the track look out

“David Herman” Very talented, small and quick but I think I could take him 20 years ago.

“Brent Patterson” The most professional rider in my day, always looking good and clean, a great strong and tactical bike racer.

“Conner Fields” This guy has talent, when he gets older look out, I would want to race him so I can knock his ego down just a bit, and in the future that could make him the greatest racer of all time.

“Kelvin Batey” Because he is English/Irish and I am hoping he will be in the bar late the night before the race giving me a chance at beating him!!

Also, you need to select a track/venue from past or present and select what music track would be blasting to get you psyched as you load up the gate?

Thanks Toby not sure about the Ga Ga bit but we love your work! www.vsiproducts.com

Hey Toby a few quickies on your company first, when and how was VSI products born? One of my last MTB sponsors asked me to join his

company Vigor Sports. Obviously I had THE, Intense and SINZ already going… The new idea was to build multiple brands servicing BMX and MTB

racing. So 6 years ago we created VSI the mother company to all the brands. This allows a distinction between the categories we felt was important to

the racer. Now we have 9 in total. THE, Intense BMX, ITS, Speed, SINZ, SINZ Elite, EYE BMX, AVE and Vigor.

What new plans do you have for the company in the coming years? Holy crap! Make every brand work?? A tall order but a lot of fun, our goal and

hopes are that all the brands do well in their assigned segments in the coming years. I am sure we will make mistakes along the way but hey this is

the bike business and we are stoked to be in it!

Surprisingly there was no French contingent in the gate for the finals. With an impressive return from injury it was Sarah Walker who proudly won the time trial and the main event, heading home Rey-nolds and Pajon.

For the women the title had aready been decided, with Latitia Le Courgille having wrapped that up in Chula Vista, this didn’t stop her pushing hard in her home event though, crashing hard in the time trials and breaking a finger. The remaining two spots on the podium were however still to fight for.

It got off to a great start for the home nation with Joris Daudet winning the men’s time trials, whilst Sarah Walker took the win for the women.

Frejus is always a busy event as it is combined with Roc D’Azur event and is also the last chance a lot of riders will have for some sunny racing on track until next season.

With the season finale in the Principality of Monaco cancelled, Frejus in the south of France closed proceedings.

Liam Phillips did the British contingent proud by making his second final of the year, but unfortunately went down in turn two tangling with Kirkham. The apparently ill Strombergs led Willers and Connor Fields all the way to the line to wrap up another amazing

This seasons winners

Adding a bit of flair to the circuit it was Ivo Van Der Putten who took the rider style award.

Crash of the year went to Connor Fields, but in special recognition of a truly monumental crash, “The cruiser crash” at the worlds that saw all but one rider involved and included two front flips amongst the aerial acrobatics was awarded crash of the century.

Voted for by the public Caroline Buchanan won female rider of the year, whilst her male counterpart was Sam Willoughby whom had to settle for second place overall on the track.

We look forward to seeing you next year for lots more Supercross action from the UCI.

As the season comes to a close it is time to dish out the silverware, as well as hosting the last round of the UCI Supercross series, Frejus also played host to the UCI BMX Supercross Awards.

It wasn’t just the riders taking home the plaudits though as French national coach Fabrice Vetorretti was awarded coach of the year.

Nic Long won pass of the year for his great last ditch attempt at Chula Vista that saw him duck under Willoughby and Strombergs to take the win on home soil.

Rookie of the year was a tough contest but it was Sylvain Andre that took home the honour.

2010 Achievements: 6th British Championships, 3rd Euro 17/24 Valkenswaard

Have you raced in the UK before: Never.

Like about Cheddar Track: The corners, speed, ambiance, and the 3rd straight.

Dislike about Cheddar Track: The gate is awful, sooooo slow!

Describe Cheddar in 5 words: Just f*cking awesome!

How does racing compare here in the UK to the Netherlands: Way better atmosphere, the team area’s are all recognisable and everyone’s shouting, great!

Any UK riders that really impressed you: Dan McBride at his age he’s a great rider, he got a bad start in the final though, but a great first turn.

Did you feel the British crowd warmed to you: Yeah, I got more applause than in Holland.

What do you think of Fastlane Bmx Magazine: Great mag almost through all the issues now, always great interviews and amazing photo’s. Keep it up!

Did you guys hate losing to each other at Cheddar: Well I did! In the final I was crap $%^@#$%^&@

If you had one piece of advice to give, what would that be: Practise the gate!

Will we see you again in the UK for 2011: I suppose! Great experience, I’d like to ride more nationals.

2010 Achievements: 17-24 Dutch Champion, European Championships 2nd.

Have you raced in the UK before: Yes I have, last year at the European round at Cheddar and also 5 years ago at the final euro rounds also in Cheddar.

Like about Cheddar Track: I like it very much, it’s a very fast track with some nice jumps and smooth turns, and especially the first straight is really nice riding!

Dislike about Cheddar Track: Uhm, I think it’s the last straight. The jumps are quite small and not smooth.

Describe Cheddar in 5 words: Fast! Fun! Scary first turn!

How does racing compare here in the UK to the Netherlands: I like racing in the UK very much everything is much more relaxed over here, everybody is really nice and chilling in the UK. In the Netherlands the organisation is more hectic and there are more rules I guess.

Any UK riders that really impressed you: Uhm, a bit hard to say. I didn’t see a lot of races except the older riders, but there’s one rider who really impressed me and that was Daniel McBride, he was riding really smooth and very hard!!

Did you feel the British crowd warmed to you: Yes that’s one of the biggest reasons to come over to the UK for racing, the crowd riders and organisation is really good, we have a lot of fun with the riders over here, and they and the crowd made us feel really welcome this weekend.

What do you think of Fastlane Bmx Magazine: Cool magazine, cool guys and cool interviews.

Did you guys hate losing to each other at Cheddar: Haha, it’s always fun racing each other. And yes I hate to lose to Rick or Jesper, but of course in a good way. After we cross the finish line we are always laughing about taking a win from each other. But if I’m 5th in the semi with Rick or Jesper in 4th hitting the last corner I will try to push them out.

If you had one piece of advice to give, what would that be: Come racing in the UK, A lot of fun, good racing and there’s a cool magazine to read!

Will we see you again in the UK for 2011: Hope so!!

Like about Cheddar Track: The speed, the corners, and you have my favourite MC, Chris Mapp!

Dislike about Cheddar Track: If I have to say something it’s the last straight.

Describe Cheddar in 5 words: Fun, Fast, Accommodation, Crowd, Racing!

How does racing compare here in the UK to the Netherlands: You have an amazing crowd! Netherlands has too many rules.

Any UK riders that really impressed you: I was surprised by McBride, Bloomy and Phillips I already knew.

Did you feel the British crowd warmed to you: Yeah spoke to a lot of people, always nice to be in England.

What do you think of Fastlane Bmx Magazine: Nice magazine, good pictures!

The new season is definitely something we are looking forward to especially with our brand new team coming through! All our riders are committed, hard training and dedicated to the sport. Perfect for our team and our values.

Besides the junior and elite riders in our team there are also some 15-16 year olds. They will benefit from the great team set up and will be trained and guided to develop themselves to be ready for the next step in their BMX career. Niels Bensink (10-11-1996) Ynske Van Tichelt (27-02-1996) Mike Klerkx (04-03-1996)

What are your main goals for the season?

Our main goal for the season is representing ourselves as an official UCI world BMX trade team on and alongside the track. During race days this means a very professional looking set up. The riders will be racing in our team colours and alongside the track they will wear presentational clothing such as tracksuits and t-shirts etc. There will be a team tent for the Meybo bikes; this will be open for visitors to view. The riders can prepare and focus in our main team tent, where the coach takes care of them, and the mechanic can do his job for the bikes.

Our riders are well known around the track for their skills and commitment. Riders which kids look up to and think “I wish I was just like him”. For those young admirers there will be posters and flyers and our riders will be happy to put their signature on them.

But most importantly we want our riders to perform. We know what our riders are able to do; now we are going to show the world. They are going to climb the podium, and they are going to do it often!

What’s your race schedule for next year?

As being a UCI world BMX trade team we will be performing at National races (in the Netherlands, Belgium and Latvia), all of the European rounds (12) and all World cups (6) next year. Of course we will also represent our team at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Many thanks guys and we hope to see you at the races…Check out www.bensinkbmxgates.com and www.meybo.nl

Sunday the weather was even better than the day before and everybody was really pumped about that and we where set for a good days racing. The track at Baarn is really technical and hard for the older and faster riders. This resulted in a lot of crashes for the big crowds.

The boys 8 year olds saw Erik Pieters take the holeshot and finish first with no problems. Brian Van Eewijk racing for Josh BMX took a close second behind Erik.

The 13/14 year girls also saw some awesome racing between Smulders, Gul and Fennebeuner. Fennebeuner grabbed the holeshot with Gul the Dutch Champ in second making some nice moves in the third corner and taking the lead. But Smulders showed her awsome tecnical skills and beat the two ladies at the rhythm section and won the race with Gul in second.

Boys 14 years, there’s a lot of talent with Jay Schippers, VD Huddink and Niels Bensink taking the top three in the main. Jay took the holeshot but came a bit too short jumping a big double. Vd Huddink passed him and took the win in this class. Niels finished in 2nd after passing Jay also after his mistake, Jay finally finished in 3rd.

With a very good start in Elite women; Joyce Seesing let us know that she really wanted to win this, she didn’t make any mistakes on the track and won the race quite easily. Powerful rider Maartje Herijgers claimed a second and European and Dutch Champ Lieke Klaus came in third.

Elite men; with three riders from the Dutch national team, local rider Jasper Verkuijl, Jordy van der Heijden, Frank Heine, Niels Tepper and Martin Jaspers the level of Elite men is really high and we enjoyed some brilliant racing all day in elite men. Martijn Scherpen the European champ of 2009 was also back on the bike since his injury along with some new riders in this class.

Big favourite Vd Biezen took the holeshot in the main and showed the people again that he’s the fastest rider of the moment. He took the lead throughout the whole race, at the last straight Jelle van Gorkum pulled back really close and it became a photo finish! Jordy vd Heijden was also up there behind Jelle but couldn’t pass and settled for a third.

Elite men

1. Raymon van der Biezen 2. Jelle van Gorkom 3. Jordy van der Heijden 4. Jasper Verkuijl 5. Twan van Gendt. 6. Frank Heijne 7. Martijn Japsers 8. Niels Tepper

Elite woman

1. Joyce Seesing 2. Maartje Hereijgers 3. Lieke Klaus 4. Elis Ligtlee 5. Dana Sprengers 6. Laura Smulders 7. Sharon van der Kolk 8. Iris van der Linde

Round 4 of the Dutch National Series was held at the technical Baarn BMX track. Baarn doesn’t really have a good reputation with the weather on race days, but this weekend it took a positive change and all the riders where all very excited about racing.

Saturday saw the practice and time trials take place with still a bit of wind and rain going down but it didn’t stop the action.

The time trial is a one lap race (with one rider on the track) and the results determine you’re gate pick for the moto’s on Sunday. Only the boys 15/16, Junior men, Elite women and men race the time trial.

The boy’s 15/16 class certainly has one big favourite and here in Baarn, Mark Link showed the crowd that he’s by far the fastest rider in this class, he easy won the time trial and got the advantage for the gate on Sunday.

In the junior men there’s some good competition with Jeffrey Hoogland and Joris Harmsen.

Joris with his good technical skills won this time trial with the powerful Jeffrey in second. With those two riders it would be great racing to watch on Sunday.

The elite women class saw some awesome racing with Dutch and European champion Lieke Klaus, Elis Ligtlee and national team member Joyce Seesing battling it out. The youngest of these three, Elis won the time trial followed by Lieke and Joyce in 2nd and third.

Elite men is a really hard class in Holland with some fantastic riders from the Dutch Redline team, VD Heijden, local racer Verkuijl, Heine and a lot more.

Of course favourite Dutch and European Champion Raymon Van Der Biezen took the win on this time trial followed by local rider Jasper Verkuijl in second and Martijn Jasper in third.

The new Sinz iHub Wheels feature a straight-pull spoke design that boosts lateral rigidity, wheel strength and reduces weight. At the heart of the wheels are the new lightweight Sinz Elite iHubs, which have hollow 15-millimeter aluminum-alloy axles paired with 10-millimeter button-head bolts. Massive 24-millimeter outer axle flanges that create a substantial clamping surface between the hub and the dropouts. The oversize axles further improve lateral rigidity and help support the cassette body in the rear. Connecting the iHubs to a pair of brand new Sinz Elite hoops are triple-butted straight-pull spokes and oversize alloy Fat Nipples. Sizes include Pro 20- and 24-inch, Expert 20- and 24-inch and Mini 20-inch. The Pro and Expert wheels have 32 spokes front and rear while the Minis have 24. The rims, iHubs, spokes and Fat Nipples are finished in black with laser-etched hub and custom full-coverage rim graphics. www.sinz-racing.com

Green Oil is available in shops na-tionwide - if your local shop doesn’t stock it yet, please ask them to! The whole range performs highly, but without the use of petrochemicals.

White; The dry lube creates a dry film of wax on your chain. This reduces friction, protects from rust, and on that dusty BMX track, does not attract sand and dust like some wet lubes can.

Clean Chain degreaser is a concen-trated, revolutionary degreating gel. You can put it neat onto your chain, like a lubricant. Ride your bike for a minute or two. Then scrub the chain down with a rag or brush twice, then rinse down with water and dry. This degreases your chain, without having to take it off the bike.

Available through all good BMX racing shops in January 2011 at a price of £279.99. They use the same BB as Shimano DXR cranks and come in lighter; both in weight and on the wallet. They will be run by the 2011 Intense team and plenty of other top pros... watch this space... www.sinz-racing.com

SINZ : Super strong Elite XXX Cranks are built specifically for BMX.When assembled, hollow-forged aluminum arms spin on smooth as silk sealed Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket bearings and a superstiff hollow 4130-chromoly spindle. Just add your favorite Sinz 4-bolt chainring and you’re ready to roll. Available in 165, 170, 175 and 180 millimeter lengths.
