The Angel

Page 14: Father Marko Rupnik the Artist1

In designing the cross which stands in the sanctuary, Father Rupnik wanted to depict how the fate of Adam and Eve who took the forbidden fruit from the tree in the Garden of Eden was reversed by Jesus Christ who was nailed to the tree on Calvary.

Saint Joseph is the father of Jesus and the husband of Mary. He is the Patron Saint of carpenters, house buyers and sellers, fathers, confectioners, wheelwrights, and working people.

Saint Joseph is depicted with the two turtledoves that he offered at the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple

The seven stained glass windows were also designed by Father Marko Rupnik and were made by Vetrate Giuliani in Rome

Each window contains a phrase associated with the particular person depicted. (For Christ “Feed my lambs, feed my sheep”)

Behind Mary is Saint Patrick, Patron of Ireland, easily identified by the shamrock in his hand.Next is Saint Columbanus, one of the many Irish missionary saints that proclaimed the Gospel in Europe during the golden age of the Irish Church in the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries. The last figure on the left-hand side of the mosaic is Blessed Columba Marmion (1858 – 1923). Beatified in September 2000, Marmion was a student at the Irish College

The base of the cross is formed by the roots of a tree, the tree of Jesse from which the Saviour comes.

On the right-hand side, behind Saint John the Baptist, Saint Oliver Plunkett (1625 – 1681) is represented holding the green palm of martyrdom in his hand. Oliver Plunkett was a student at the Irish College from 1647 – 1654.He was the last Catholic martyr to die in England. Next to Saint Oliver is Saint Brigid, the Patroness of Ireland, who holds her distinctive cross in her hands. The last figure on the right, depicted without a halo but with the palm of martyrdom, is Father Ragheed Ganni (1972 – 2007).

Ragheed Aziz Ganni was an ethnic Assyrian Chaldean Catholic priest. On June 3, 2007, Trinity Sunday, the Sunday after Pentecost, he was killed along with three subdeacons in front of Mosul's Holy Spirit Chaldean Church where he was parish priest. Father Ganni was secretary to Paulos Faraj Rahho, the Archbishop of Mosul of the Chaldean Church, Iraq's largest Christian community. Rahho was murdered only nine months after Ganni's death, in the same city of Mosul
