ICON OF THE MASSES
In every age, Christians have suffered for their faith.
Brave men and women, em-bracing the cross of Jesus, have gone to their death
rather than deny their faith.
The Knights of Columbus encourage you to remain after each Mass on Febru-ary 8 and 9 for ten to fifteen minutes to pray for those who suffer today for their faith and to ask our Blessed Mother to inter-cede for persecuted Chris-tians everywhere.

THE COMPASSIONATE CAFÉ
meets in Madden Hall on Thursday, February 13, at 10 AM
For millions of people, this year will be the first Valentine’s Day since their Valentine died. For other millions, it will be the passage of the first Valentine’s Day after a divorce or romantic breakup. For them the day is about grief rather than candy and flowers. It won’t be romantic and it won’t be fun. It brings up painful or sad memories.
The Grief Recovery Institute defines grief as:
1. The conflicting feelings following the end of, or change in, a change of familiar pattern or behavior.
2. The lost hopes, dreams, and expectations when a rela-tionship changes or ends.
If you are feeling sad or grieving as Valentines Day ap-proaches consider the following:
• Be aware • If you notice you are out of the moment, thinking about the past, acknowledge it.
• Tell the truth about yourself
• If you are sad, say so. Find a loving friend with whom you can share your honest feelings with.
• Get in the moment
• After telling the truth about what is preoccupying your thoughts, see if you can get back in the moment by focusing on what is in front of you.
• Be honest
•Ask yourself if there were things you wish would have ended different, better, or more. If so, you might be incom-plete with the relationship you are thinking about. Until you get complete with that relationship your capacity for happiness will be limited.
• Ask for help
The Grief Recovery Method Action program for Moving Beyond Death, Divorce, and Other Losses will be offered in March and April with an introductory meeting on March 2.
There will be more information in the February and March bulletins. Contact Paul Brustowicz, 732-801-8333 (cell), for more information.

On behalf of the Apostleship of the Sea, the Charleston Port and Seafar-ers’ Society, and all of the seafarers, I want to thank you for your support of the Christmas-at-Sea program. This year we were able to give out over 3,400 Christmas packages to the men and women we serve. For those who were far from their homes at Christ-
mas this was a small, but greatly appreciated reminder that they are not forgotten, that the Lord cares for all of them. May God bless you always. Our Lady, Stella Maris, pray for us.

SUNDAY CONNECTION
Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presenta-tion of Jesus in the temple. The Presentation, which is celebrated 40 days after Christmas, is not mentioned in the other Gospels. Only Luke tells the story, most likely because he writes for Gentile Christians who are not familiar with the Jewish rite of presentation and purifi-cation. In addition, the intent of Luke’s Gospel is to show that God’s promise to Israel, fulfilled in Jesus, ex-tends to Gentiles.
Luke recognizes Joseph and Mary as faithful Jews who bring Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Here they pre-sent their firstborn son to the Lord. Jesus is thus conse-crated as required by the Law of Moses. Present in the temple at this time are Simeon and Anna. Both are awaiting the restoration of God’s rule in Israel.
Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see Christ the Lord, the Messiah, before he died. The holy man immediately recognized the infant Jesus as the promised Savior, a “light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Anna also recognized Jesus as the fulfillment of the promise of redemption and spoke about him to all.
