Knights in Action (Managing Resources to Jumpstart your Career):
On May 1, 2016 the Knights of Columbus and
St. Simon/ Jude Youth Group held a Managing
Resources to Jumpstart your Career night. The
seminar lasted from 6pm to 8pm. Mike Meyers and
Katie Jones hosted the evening. There were
students from West Jefferson, Bishop Ready and
Hilliard Schools. The meeting was filled with
facts, fun and pizza. Here are pictures of the event.
Michael would like to extend a huge thanks for
those of you who supported the resource
management presentation May 1. In particular I
would like to thank Katie for allowing us to partner
with her and the youth group and Deacon Joe for
heavily recruiting at Ready. Also, I would like to
thank Delaney Mandel for her presentation on
college life.
There were about 15 youth and a few adults in the
audience. Hopefully next year we can continuously
improve the presentation and increase the number
of attendees.
Again - thanks for the support and God bless.
For any information given at the meeting or
any additional information please contact Mike
Myers at 614-306-0932.

Knights in Action:
In the month of April, the Ball Corporation
collected cans of food with the reimbursement of
$1.00 per pound of food collected. They were able
to collect 2,300 pounds of food and reimburse
$2,300 for food collected. Food collected was
distributed among the West Jefferson Food Pantry
and the Holy Family Soup Kitchen. Our Brother
Knight Denise Shope led the project and
distribution of the food collected.
To explain the importance of this project, one
just has to work at the food pantry or the soup
kitchen. This food helps feed those who are hungry
but also frees up money for the Pantry and the Soup
Kitchen. This money can be used to buy additional
food or any other items needed by the less
fortunate. Here are some pictures showing the
distribution of these foods.

Only Having Insurance “Through
Work” Doesn’t Work
Do you know anyone whose life or career has
drastically changed during these years of economic
downturn? It’s very likely that someone in your
immediate or extended family or group of friends is
facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a
possibility that you (or your spouse) could change
employers, or even lose your job.
Too many people have often relied on group term
life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this
insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or
no cost. The existence of this coverage might
convince someone that personally-owned life
insurance is not necessary.
But only having “through work” insurance can
leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group
life insurance policies are limited in amount, which
may be tied to salary or some other benchmark.
These numbers are often capped, and this cap may
be dangerously low when compared to your
family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs
analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will
likely show that any employer-provided coverage
falls short.
In addition, the amount of group insurance offered
is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically,
when you retire. You could one day find yourself
without coverage, and if your health has changed
(which it will as you age), you might also find
yourself unable to secure individual protection. At
the very least, it will definitely be more expensive.
While group life insurance can help, it does not
replace the need for individually owned life
insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and
provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know
exactly where you stand.

Get to Know a Saint:
St. Ivo of Kermartin
Ivo Helory, a legal scholar from Kermartin,
France, served as an ecclesiastical judge in the

8
dioceses of Rennes and Treguier, becoming known
as an advocate of the poor. Following his
ordination, he served as a parish priest for eighteen
years. Each day before celebrating Mass, and at
other times as well, he would prostrate himself
before the altar, tearfully offering fervent prayers.
Similarly, he would prepare for his sermons on his
knees. In his preaching, Ivo habitually included
examples drawn from the lives of the saints. He
kept his breviary and his Bible at his side almost
constantly. Ivo generously gave his time to his
priestly duties of hearing confessions and bringing
Viaticum to the dying, carrying the Eucharist in a
silver pyx over his heart. On his deathbed, Ivo kept
his eyes fixed upon a crucifix placed before a
window of his room. Upon hearing a bystander
speak of asking for a doctor, Ivo responded that his
only doctor was Jesus Christ. He repeatedly made
the sign of the cross before breathing his last. Ivo is
venerated as a patron saint of lawyers.

Tony’s Trivia answers:
1. Answer: No, never
Never may a sinful act be committed to
accomplish a good. A good intention (for
example, that of helping one's neighbor)
does not make behavior that is intrinsically
disordered, such as lying and calumny,
good or just. The end does not justify the
means. Thus the condemnation of an
innocent person cannot be justified as a
legitimate means of saving the nation. One
may never do evil so that good may result
from it.
2. Answer: Always False
Source: Catechism of the Catholic
Church #1879
The human person needs to live in society.
Society is not for him an extraneous addition
but a requirement of his nature. Through the
exchange with others, mutual service and
dialogue with his brethren, man develops his
potential; he thus responds to his vocation.
3. Answer: Faith, hope, and charity
Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church
#1813
The theological virtues are the foundation of
Christian moral activity... There are three
theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity.
4. Answer: subsidiarity
Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church #1883
Socialization also presents dangers. Excessive
intervention by the state can threaten personal
freedom and initiative. The teaching of the Church
has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity,
according to which “a community of a higher order
should not interfere in the internal life of a
community of a lower order, depriving the latter of
its functions, but rather should support it in case of
need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the
activities of the rest of society, always with a view
to the common good.
5. Answer: It is a preparation for the Gospel.

The Old Law is defined as a preparation for the
Gospel. Not the New Law which is a law of love, a
law of grace, and a law of freedom. The New Law
is the grace of the Holy Spirit received by faith in
Christ, operating through charity.
