    Fatima Prophecies

On May 13, 1917 a luminous Apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared to three peasantchildren and delivered a prophecy that would change the world. Investigations into theFatima event have proved that the miracle of October 13, 1917 was seen over an areaof 32 miles by 20, an area of over 600 square miles.

The three children - Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco took their flock of sheep to a naturalhollow in the ground known as the Cova da Iria to graze, just outside the town ofFatima in Portugal. While the sheep were grazing the children began to play.Suddenly there was a flash of lightening. The children looked up, bewildered into the

sky. The day was quiet pleasent and there was no sign of a storm. They started togather the sheep thinking a storm was brewing in the distance when there was asecond flash that caused total concern. A few metres away stood a Lady of dazzlinglight. Their eyes were unable to comprehend the lady's brilliance and beauty .

    The children smelled rose. shepherd

"Where are you from?" Lucy managed to ask.

    "I am from Heaven".

"What do you want of us?" asked Lucia.

"I came to ask you to come here on the 13th day for six months at the same time, andthen I will return here a seventh time."

After several other messages Mary asked finally for them to recite the Rosary dailybefore she rose in a cloud of light and glided away into the eastern sky. Lucia warnedher cousins to say nothing of what they had seen out of fear of disbelief, but Jacintawas too excited. Predictably Jacinta told her parents about the Apparition and therewas a general reaction of disbelief. Lucia`s mother was convinced that her child waslying and punished her continually when she refused to deny her story.

But the visions of Mary -- and her series of prophecies remained apparent to the threechildren. At first, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta had great difficulty trying to share whatthey had seen, because the government of Portugal was heavily opposed to religion atthat time. Francisco and Jacinta died in an influenza pandemic within three years ofthe 1917 "dance of the sun."

Lucia went on to become a nun. She told the church the details of Fatima prophecies, the first parts of which have common public knowledge for many years. A short timelater another vision appeared.

    Witness reports:

"I looked at the sun and saw it spinning like a disc, rolling on itself. I saw peoplechanging color. They were stained with the colors of the rainbow. The sun seemed tofall down from the sky. The people said that the world was going to end. They wereafraid and screaming," said Antonio de Oliveiro, Farmer.

"Suddenly the rain stopped and a great splendor appeared and the children cried:'Look at the sun!' I saw the sun coming down, feeling that it was falling to the ground. At that moment, I collapsed." Maria Candida da Silva. "I looked and saw that thepeople were in various colors - yellow, white, blue. At the same time, I beheld the sunspinning at great speed and very near me. I at once thought: I am going to die".

"Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they stoodbareheaded, pale with fright, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made

sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws - the sun 'danced' according tothe typical expression of the people. Standing at the step of the Torres Novas bus wasan old man, whose appearance in face and figure reminded one of Paul Deroulede. With his face turned towards the sun he recited the Creed in a loud voice.

"Afterwards, I saw him going up to those around him who still had their hats on, andvehemently imploring them to uncover their heads before such an extraordinarydemonstration of the existence of God. Identical scenes were repeated elsewhere, andin one place, a woman cried out in a gasp of surprise: 'How dreadful that there aresome men who do not even bare their heads before such a stupendous miracle!' People

then began to ask each other what they had seen. The great majority admitted tohaving seen the trembling and the dancing of the sun. Others affirmed that they sawthe face of the Blessed Virgin, while others swore that the sun whirled on itself to theearth as if to burn it with its rays. Some said they saw it change colors successively."

""It was almost three o'clock in the afternoon. The sky was swept clear of clouds andthe sun followed its course in its usual splendor, so that no one ventured to gaze at it

directly. What about the little shepherds? Lucia, who had spoken to Our Lady, wasannouncing with expressive gestures, as she was carried along shoulder-high by a manand passed from group to group, that the war would end and that the soldiers wouldreturn. But news like that, however, did nothing to increase the jubilation of thosewho heard it. The heavenly sign was sufficient for them: it was everything.

"Intense curiosity prevailed to see the two little girls in their wreaths of roses, and tokiss the hands of these 'little saints', one of whom, Jacinta, seemed nearer to faintingthan dancing. They had so longed to see the sign from Heaven: they had seen andwere satisfied and radiated burning faith.

"The crowd dispersed rapidly, without any difficulty, without any sign of disorder, without any need for policemen to regulate them. Those who were the first to arrivewere also the first to depart, running out on the roadway, traveling on foot with theirfootwear in a bundle on their heads or strung from their staffs. They went, with hearts

overflowing with joy, to bring the good news to their hamlets that had not beenwholly depopulated for the time being.

"And what of the priests? Some turned up at the place, mingling more among thecurious spectators rather than among the pilgrims avid for heavenly signs and favors.Perhaps neither one nor the other succeeded in concealing their happiness, which sooften transpired in triumphant guise . . . It only remains for those competent to dojustice to the bewildering dance of the sun which, on this day in Fatima, causedHosannas to resound from the hearts of all the faithful present, and naturally made agreat impression, as people worthy of belief assured me, on the freethinkers andothers without any religious conviction who had come to this now famous spotlocated on the poor pastureland high up on the serra. Avelino de Almeida."

"The sun started to roll from one place to another and changed to blue, yellow - allcolors. Then we see the sun coming towards the children. Everyone was crying out. Some started to confess their sins because there was no priest around there . . . Mymother grabbed me to her and started to cry, saying 'It is the end of the world!' Andthen we see the sun come right into the trees."

    - Dominic Reis, in an American TV interview, 1960.

    The Three Secrets of Fatima

The Three Secrets of Fatima consist of a series of visions and prophecies allegedlygiven by an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three young Portugueseshepherds, Lcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, on May 13,1917. The three children claimed to have been visited by a Marian apparition sixtimes between May and October 1917. The apparition is now popularly known as Our

Lady of Ftima. According to the most popular interpretation, the three secretsinvolve Hell, World Wars I and II, and the shooting of Pope John Paul II.

On July 13, 1917, around noon, the lady is said to have entrusted the children withthree secrets. Two of the secrets were revealed in 1941 in a document written byLcia, at the request of Jos da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, to assist with the publicationof a new edition of a book on Jacinta.

When asked by the Bishop of Leiria in 1943 to reveal the third secret, Lcia struggledfor a short period, being "not yet convinced that God had clearly authorized her toact." However, in October 1943 the bishop of Leiria ordered her to put it in writing.Lucia then wrote the secret down and sealed it in an envelope not to be opened until1960, when "it will appear clearer." The text of the third secret was officially releasedby Pope John Paul II in 2000, although some claim that it was not the entire secretrevealed by Lucia, despite assertions from the Vatican to the contrary.

    The First Secret

The first secret was a vision ofHell:

Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plungedin this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, allblackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the

air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds ofsmoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight orequilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us andmade us tremble with fear. The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying andrepulsive likeness to frightful and unknown animals, all black and transparent. Thisvision lasted but an instant. How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind heavenlyMother, who had already prepared us by promising, in the first Apparition, to take usto heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of fear and terror.

    The Second Secret

The second secret is a statement that World War I would end and goes on to predictanother war, World War II during the reign of a Pope Pius XI, should men continueoffending God and should Russia not convert.[citation needed] The second halfrequests that Russia be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart:

You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, Godwishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say

to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war isgoing to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will breakout during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by anunknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he isabout to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, andpersecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father.

  • 7/28/2019 Fatima Prophecies

    7/13

To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to myImmaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. Ifmy requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; ifnot, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars andpersecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father willhave much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, myImmaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me,and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.

This secret's controversy is second only to the supposed final secret of Ftima, as itseemingly predicts both the all-encompassing World War II, the radical Anti-theisticideology of the Soviet Union; the proxy wars and limited direct confrontations thatwould be initiated between the Western Democracies and the Soviet Bloc.

Some have complained that the second prophecy was not disclosed until August 1941,

after World War II had already begun. However, the provenance of the document iseasily traced to 1935, when it was first written down, though Sister Lucia avowed thatthe three children first received it in June 1917. Pope Pius XII allegedly consecratedRussia on 7 July 1952.

    The Third Secret

The third part of the secret was allegedly written down "by order of His Excellency

the Bishop of Leiria and the Most Holy Mother ". . . on 3 January 1944.

In 1943, Lcia fell ill with influenza and pleurisy, which had killed her cousins. Forseveral months, she was sure she was going to die. Bishop Silva, visiting her on 15September 1943 while she was bed-ridden, first suggested that she write the thirdsecret down to ensure that it would be recorded in the event of her death. Lucia washesitant to do so, however. She was under strict obedience according to her Carmelitevows, but when she received the secret, she had heard Mary say not to reveal it. For atime, she was in a quandary as to whose orders took precedence. Finally, in mid-October, Bishop Silva sent her a letter containing a direct order to record the secret,

    and Lcia obeyed.

In June 1944, the sealed envelope containing the third secret was delivered to Silva, where it stayed until 1957, when it was finally delivered to Rome.

It was announced by Cardinal Sodano on May 13, 2000, 83 years after the firstapparition of the Lady to the children in the Cova da Iria, that the Third Secret would

  • 7/28/2019 Fatima Prophecies

    8/13

finally be released. In his announcement, Cardinal Sodano implied that the secret wasabout the persecution of Christians in the 20th century that culminated in the failedassassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981.

The text of the Third Secret was published on 26 June 2000:

The third part of the secret revealed at the Cova da Iria-Ftima, on 13 May1917. I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so throughhis Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother andmine.

After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady anda little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing,it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; butthey died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him

from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel criedout in a loud voice: 'Penance, Penance, Penance!'.

And we saw in an immense light that is God: 'something similar to how peopleappear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White 'wehad the impression that it was the Holy Father'. Other Bishops, Priests, men andwomen Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was abig Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reachingthere the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half tremblingwith halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the

corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on hisknees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who firedbullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another theother Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people ofdifferent ranks and positions.

Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystalaspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrsand with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God.

Along with the text of the secret, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger published atheological commentary, in which he states that:"A careful reading of the text of theso-called third 'secret' of Fatima ... will probably prove disappointing or surprisingafter all the speculation it has stirred. No great mystery is revealed; nor is the futureunveiled."

  • 7/28/2019 Fatima Prophecies

    9/13

After explaining the differences between public and private revelations, he cautionspeople not to see in the message a determined future event: "The purpose of the visionis not to show a film of an irrevocably fixed future. Its meaning is exactly theopposite: it is meant to mobilize the forces of change in the right direction. Thereforewe must totally discount fatalistic explanations of the secret, such as, for example, the claim that the would-be assassin of May 13, 1981 was merely an instrument of thedivine plan guided by Providence and could not therefore have acted freely, or othersimilar ideas in circulation. Rather, the vision speaks of dangers and how we might besaved from them."

He then moves on to talk about the symbolic nature of the images, noting that: "Theconcluding part of the 'secret' uses images which Lucia may have seen in devotionalbooks and which draw their inspiration from long-standing intuitions of faith."

As for the meaning of the message: "What remains was already evident when we

began our reflections on the text of the 'secret': the exhortation to prayer as the path of'salvation for souls' and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion."

The Vatican withheld the Third Secret until June 262000, despite Lcia's declarationthat it should be released to the public after 1960. Some sources, including CanonBarthas and Cardinal Ottaviani, said that Lcia insisted to them it must be released by1960, saying that, "by that time, it will be more clearly understood", and, "because theBlessed Virgin wishes it so."

When 1960 arrived, rather than releasing the Third Secret, the Vatican published anofficial press release stating that it was "most probable the Secret would remain, forever, under absolute seal." After this announcement, immense speculation over thecontent of the secret materialized. According to the New York Times, speculationover the content of the secret ranged from "worldwide nuclear annihilation to deeprifts in the Roman Catholic Church that lead to rival papacies."

The release of the text sparked immediate criticism, even outrage, from the CatholicChurch in Portugal. Clergy as well as laypeople had been outraged that the text hadbeen read in Rome and not at the Fatima shrine in Portugal where the reported eventstook place. Portuguese Catholics responded to the release of the text with disbelief, saying that if the words did not concern some kind of terrible catastrophe such as war, holocaust or apocalypse, there had been no reason for the Vatican to keep them secret.

The London Times for June 29, 2000, reported that "The revelation on Monday thatthere were no doomsday predictions has provoked angry reactions from thePortuguese church over the decision to keep the prophecy secret for half a century."

  • 7/28/2019 Fatima Prophecies

    10/13

Portuguese newspapers reported that many people felt "dismayed, cheated, andbetrayed" by the news.

Some sources claim that the four-page, handwritten text of the Third Secret releasedby the Vatican in the year 2000 is not the real secret, or at least not the full secret. In

particular, it is alleged that Cardinals Bertone, Ratzinger and Sodano engaged in asystematic deception to cover up the existence of a one-page document containing thewords of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which some believe[citation needed] containsinformation about the Apocalypse and a great apostasy. These sources contend thatthe Third Secret is actually composed of two texts, where one of these texts is thepublished four-page vision, and the other is a single-page letter allegedly containingthe words of the Virgin Mary which has been concealed.

    Fatimas History

In the spring of 1916, the Angel of Peace appears to three young shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal.

The Angel teaches the children, Jacinta Marcos, Francisco Marcos, and Lucia Dos Santos, the PARDON

    PRAYER.

In the autumn of that year the Angel teaches the children the ANGEL PRAYER.

On May 13, 1917, in a field called Cova da Iria near the village of Fatima, Portugal, a beautiful luminous

Lady, dressed in radiant white, appears before the three young children. She tells them that she has been

sent by God with a message for every man, woman and child. She asks for prayer, especially that of the

Holy Rosary, reparation and consecration. She teaches the three children the EUCHARISTIC PRAYER.

During Her July 13, 1917 apparition she teaches the children two additional prayers; the SACRIFICE

    PRAYER and the DECADE PRAYER.

On October 13, 1917, during the final apparition, Our Blessed Mother makes Herself known to the

children as, Our Lady of The Rosary. At this time the Great Miracle of the Sun occurs. As Our Lady of

The Rosary moves off into the distance, Saint Joseph with The Child Jesus and Our Lady appear. Saint

Joseph and the Christ Child bless the world as they make the Sign of the Cross. As the apparition fades

Our Lord appears with Our Lady of Sorrows and blesses those present with the Sign of the Cross. As this

apparition fades, Our Blessed Mother reappears as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

On December 10, 1925, in Pontevedra, Spain, Our Blessed Mother appears within a cloud of Light with

her child Jesus before Sister Lucia. She declares that all who attend Mass for the Five First Saturdays,

meditate for fifteen minutes while praying the Holy Rosary, attend Confession, receive Holy Communion,

and offer reparation, penance, prayer and sacrifice shall be granted mercy at their hour of death.

On June 13, 1929, while Sister Lucia, then a Dorothean nun, is at Holy Hour in Tuy, Spain, she is granted

a special vision of the Blessed Trinity. In the Vision the written words Graces and Mercy appear. This is

perhaps one of the most important revelations of Fatima.

Years later, Our Lord appears to Sister Lucia in Rianjo, Spain, where He teaches her two additional

prayers called the CONVERSION PRAYER and the SALVATION PRAYER.

In 1948, Sister Lucia enters the Carmelite Convent in Coimbra, Portugal, where she takes the religious

name Sister Maria of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Sister Lucia dies on February 13, 2005 at age 97 at

her Carmelite Convent in Coimbra, Portugal.
