The Reflection Question for this week is:

The Opening Prayer reminds us that we are

commanded to listen to God’s beloved Son.

WHAT DO I HEAR JESUS SAYING TO ME

IN THIS EUCHARIST?

“You shall not covert” Is a difficult commandment to keep in our consumer

society. But as Christian stewards, we know that we are the recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this realization that

all is gift help us be less resentful of the gifts of others.

“Dear Lord, we are now in the holy season of Lent. We begin to realize that these are the days of salvation, these are the acceptable days. Weknow that we are all sinners. We know that sin destroys your life in us as a drought withers the leaves and chokes the life from the land, leaving an arid, dusty desert. Every day we are so often reminded in field and wood, in sky and stream, of your own boundless generosity to us. Help us to realize that you are never outdone in generosity, and the least thing we do for you will be rewarded, full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and flowing over. Then we shall see how the desert can bloom, and the dry and wasted land can bring forth the rich, useful fruit that was expected of it from the beginning.” (The Rural Life Prayerbook)

SECOND COLLECTION: Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help

March 4th, 2018 The III Sunday of Lent Page 3 provide food for the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ’s love and respect to all people here at home and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the CRSC and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

THE PASTORAL COUNCIL will meet on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7th, at 7:30 PM in the Parish Meeting Room.

THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, MARCH 13th, at 7:30 PM in the Parish Meeting Room.

FAITH DIRECT: You may have noticed that on the week of the snow storm that came on Saturday evening and ended sometime on Sunday morning that our collection was very low ($2,429). It was probably due to the snow storm, but it still leaves the parish with a serious concern. If you couldn’t make it last week because of the snow storm and were using FAITH DIRECT your weekly offering would have automatically been sent to the parish. Please consider using FAITH DIRECT. It makes it easier for you and it helps the parish. If you want to find out more about FAITH DIRECT please go to their WEBSITE at www.faithdirect.net. Our parish code is NY303.

THE CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL for 2018 is a underway. Our parish goal for 2018 is $38,600. As of February 20th, 2018 we have raised $4,605 toward our goal (12%). Twenty three parishioners have contributed thus far. Please help us reach our goal for 2018. The theme of this year’s appeal is: “The Hands of Christ’s Mercy.” Your gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps our diocese and our parish to be the hands of Christ’s mercy by helping our Church to expand our services to the disadvantaged and underserved, enhances our children’s religious and academic programs, support vocations, and strengthen our services to families. You help us to bring the light of Christ to those who are struggling with substance, so that they can reclaim the lives of God intended for them. You help our Church to encourage and provide the opportunity for tomorrow’s priests to discern their vocations. You help us to pass on the treasures of our faith to a new generation of Jesus’ disciples. If you need a CMA envelop, they are available at the entranceway of the church.

Community Life

Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent! Next weekend Daylight savings Time begins (March 11th) as the first day of spring dawns upon us on March 20th. The winter break week had a couple of spring like days to remind us that spring is coming quickly upon us. In less than two weeks time three of my friends went home to God. I knew Rose since 1990, Sybil since 1973 and John since 1969. All were extraordinary people of faith. Sybil was a college professor who taught anthropology for many years, Rose was a stay at home mom all her life who volunteered her time in the parish and in the wider community, John was a priest who ministered to the people of God in the Diocese of Brooklyn for more than 44 years. Each one was a true gift from God who shared their journey of life with me for many years. Rose was 95 years old, Sybil was 88 years old and John was 71 years old. These weeks of been weeks of remembering the grace filled years we spent with one another. Their journey home to God this Lent reminds me that Easter is quickly approaching and that on that day we celebrate the gift of eternal life. I also am grateful for the gift of faith that proclaims that our loved ones are always with us, even in the profound mystery of death; for they now share in a even more profound mystery, the mystery of life that has no end. The death of my three friends has somewhat changed my days of Lent. I find myself more reflective, more prayerful. My original plans for Lent have changed as I call to mind so many different memories. I have taken a step back and started to consider the importance of friendship of fellow disciples of the gospel and how their lives have impacted my own journey of faith. Lent is a very grace filled time. It calls us to center ourselves once again in the mystery of God’s abundant love. It a world that moves so

March 4th, 2018 The III Sunday of Lent Page 4 quickly and makes prayer time so hard to put into the day, Lent calls us to make the time for God’s grace to work in our lives. We make the time to be with our God and our memories and listen to the Spirit as she speaks to our hearts about the wonders of God’s infinite love and what that infinite love means for our lives. One of the books that I am reading this Lent is by Gerhard Lohink who is a New Testament scholar. The name of the book is: IS THIS ALL THERE IS? On Resurrection and Eternal Life. It’s a book that a friend of mine recommended me to read during the season of Lent. In the book he looks at several questions: Is the Christian hope for resurrection still alive or has it become tired? How can we talk about the resurrection today? He writes: “In reflecting and writing this book it has again been shown to me how liberating the Christian faith in the resurrection of the dead truly is. Those who cling to this faith can live with confidence in the ‘biblical’ today, because every hour of their lives has weight and hope. And they can invest strength in building a just society because the world of resurrection is the God-given form of the very world we fight for in this story.” Resurrection is not about some far distant event; but rather occurrences incomprehensively close to us. They were long since begun and they will embrace us fully in our own death. May all our loved ones who have gone home to God rest in the gift of God’s endless love as they share in the gift of eternal life. May our faith in the resurrection fill us with great peace and wonderful memories! May we thank our God for all our loved ones who have filled our lives with so many wonderful blessings! Peace, Fr. Steve
