Christian Ethics – Gambling #4

Many people if not most people who oppose gam-bling, do so for sociological and economic reasons rather than religious or moral reasons. They believe that gam-bling is bad for the nation. Their reasoning is based upon asking the question, “What would things be like if every-one acted in accordance with this principle?” Let us look at some examples of how this question might be asked in regard to gambling. How would you feel if you went to the grocery store and the grocer said: “We will flip a coin to decide how much you will pay for a loaf of bread.” What would be your reaction if your boss told you, “We will determine your salary by throwing the dice?” What if the scheduling of TV programs was decided each day by numbered marbles picked out of a box?” If such a principle would not be good for these everyday events, then it should not be the principle for distributing 50 billion dollars every year (this is the amount of money that is gambled every year in America). For the Christian, however, there are other rea-sons why gambling should be opposed. Gambling is wrong because “it is a denial of the divine order.” Gam-bling exalts chance instead of God. In the church we need to be teaching people that life is not a “gamble” be-cause God is in control. In Romans 8:28 Paul wrote, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” We know that if we remain faithful to God, then we will be the winners in life. Our victory is not dependent upon luck but upon God! One gambling advertisement in Australia said, “Invest a bob and chuck your job.” This was an enticement to gamble. If you bet a "bob” (Australian money worth about $2 or $3) and win, then you could quit your job and not have to work anymore. Most people, who buy lottery tickets or gamble in any way, do so with the hope that they will be the lucky one and they will never have to work again. But this is not God’s plan for man. God said, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19). Paul told the church at Ephesus, “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need” (Eph. 4:28). Again this same apostle wrote, “…If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (2 Thess. 3:10). Gambling is wrong because it violates God’s plan for mankind. Gambling is wrong because, “It disregards our possessions as a trust!” We need to remember that the material things that we have, have been given to us by God, and that we are to use them in the right way. The things that we have in our possession are not ours. They belong to God and therefore they need to be used in ways that are in keeping with God’s will.
