Our dads and special blokes are warmly invited to a morning tea in the courtyard following the visit the Battle of the Boots is scheduled for Saturday 3/9 at 1.30pm at the Boss James Reserve in Bluff Road. This is an annual community event where the dads from Hampton Primary and St Mary’s play in a footy match that some have been training and preparing for very seriously indeed. One of our dads has been training so hard that he is now on crutches and will have to wait until next year to play! I wish all players the best of luck and hope there are no further injuries as a result of the game. Our Year 3 choir will be leading the singing of the national anthem to commence proceedings Father’s Day on Sunday is a time when all children can show their appreciation for dads and special men. Casino Royale Thank you to everyone who was part of Hampton Primary’s Casino Royale event! The Sandringham Football Club proved to be an excellent venue. We had 172 come along dressed resplendently to try their hand using funny money, catch up with friends, have some fun and support our school. There was much laughter and lots of storytelling throughout the night as community members tried their best to secure a bargain with the silent and loud auction items, some of which were very enticing. The event was coordinated by an enthusiastic team of parents who worked tirelessly to ensure everything went smoothly and the outcome was fruitful. My sincere thanks go to Sarah Rowley, Mary Cole, Jo Kwok, Caz Stremski, Alex Kelsey and Will Mc Gowan who were the driving and very resourceful force behind the event. The generosity of spirit evident in this team in relation to time and organisation paid dividends. The profit generated is very close to $20,000 which is an outstanding result. All of this money will be going towards the refurbishment of the school toilets.

Grounds Development During the Term 3 holiday period we plan to have the stage area in the quadrangle removed as the timber is becoming worn and will be replaced with concrete. This will be a far more practical surface and much easier to clean and maintain. Early in Term 4, the Buildings and Grounds team will be reviewing plans for further greening of the garden areas around the school. We want to ensure that shade is a big factor for future plantings – particularly around the oval. Plans for a sensory garden at the front of school are being developed at the moment. We are also contemplating the development of another sand pit area as this is a very popular activity for younger children. School Readiness Hearing Screening There will be school reading hearing screening program conducted in the BER building at our school this Saturday from 8.45am until 4pm. This is a free program and is being organised with support from Hampton Rotary, Bayside Council, Melbourne University and Hurlingham Preschool. See the flyer later in the newsletter for more details. Assembly Performances Thanks go to 5/6C, Eucalypts who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Our musical item featured Allister Jones from 5/6F, Red Tingle playing “Jelly Bean Rag” on keyboard; this performance would have assisted Allister with his preparation for the AMEB examination.

Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly yesterday: Mietta King from 2D, Manna Gums for making excellent progress in reading and writing

where her opinions are expressed clearly, arguments are described convincingly and at times persuasively

Lachie Nolan from 2D, Manna Gums for showing an enthusiastic approach to all number activities demonstrating a capacity to think quickly in mathematical situations.

Sporting Excellence Congratulations go to Dylan Unkles from 3B, Ironbarks who won a gold medal at the 2016 Australian Taekwondo Championships on the weekend. He competed in the 9 year old Black Belt category and won the gold medal fight 12-1. He has been training hard and was really excited with the result. This is an impressive achievement for Dylan!

Connor Olivier from 5/6E, Wollemi competed at the state championships in lifesaving on Sunday. He finished with 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal; in doing so he broke two state records! Congratulations Connor on your outstanding achievement! In addition, Savannah James from 2B, Peppermint Gums and Kate Morrison from 3D, Silver Mallee competed in the championships, both earning a bronze medal. Congratulations to Savannah and Kate!

Art News Last Friday, some of the Foundation students were very fortunate to have a surprise session with author, illustrator and artist, Alison Binks. Alison has just published her first children's book

called Caspar and the Night Sea. The students listened intently to Alison tell the story, then talked about how she had made her pictures. Alison very kindly stayed for the messy part where the students used blue, white, green and purple acrylic to paint the sea and sky at night. Next week the students plan to add themselves sailing in a tiny boat on their way to see the whales!
