WEEK 11: ROCKY MOUNTAIN

THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...ROCKY START LEADS TO FIRST LOSS FOR EASTERNOct. 1, 2011

LA GRANDE, Ore. – A high scoring aff air between two of the top teams in the Frontier Conference, Eastern Oregon and Rocky Mountain College, ended one-sided.

Rocky Mountain came into Community Stadium and recorded an impressive off ensive day. Th ey were able to gain 392 yards of total off ense while tallying 51 points.

Quarterback Bryce Baker was the focal point for the Battlin’ Bears off ense. He was 10-18 for 192 yards and four touchdowns. More impressively, Baker rushed for a game-high 97 yards on 18 at-tempts. Receiver AJ Tolbert helped the off ense out by catching four balls for a game-high 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Rocky Mountain started off their impressive off en-sive day with a 9-play drive that ended with a Knell fi eld goal. Aft er a Eastern three-and-out, Rocky Mountain marched down the fi eld for a 7-play 59 yard scoring drive that ended in a Scharbrough touchdown. Aft er a Ware interception, Rocky Mountain capitalized with a Baker to Lee 25-yard touchdown pass to put Rocky up 17-0 at the end of the fi rst quarter.

Eastern responded with a Ware rushing touch-down to narrow the gap to 17-7 early in the second quarter. Not long aft er Rocky Mountain’s Baker tosses a 67-yard touchdown pass to Tolbert to make the lead 17 points. Aft er a successful onside kick, Rocky Mountain comes away with three courtesy of Knell putting them ahead 27-7. Another Eastern three-and-out set up a Baker to Tolbert touchdown pass which made the score 34-7. At the end of the half there was life on the Eastern sideline as they drove down the fi eld to make a fi eld goal and end the half down 34-10.

To open the third quarter Eastern stalls on their drive, and Rocky capitalizes with a Baker to Sutton touchdown pass to make the score 41-10. On East-ern’s next drive Ware fumbles in the redzone and Rocky recovers to set up a Knell fi eld goal. An

Eastern interception was returned 65 yards for a touchdown by Fitzgerald.

Th e Eastern off ense ended the game with a good off ensive drive of 13 plays for 73 yards and a Walser rushing touchdown, which put the fi nal at 51-10 in favor of Rocky Mountain.

Miscues were a big reason why Eastern fell behind early and could never catch up. Between 3 intercep-tions and a fumble, Rocky Mountain scored 21 points off turnovers. Also, Ware was sacked four times and under duress all game.

Ware ended the game 15-28 for 196 yards and two interceptions. Sean Hurlbut was Eastern’s leading rusher gaining 44 yards on 10 carries. Jake Bur-roughs led the receiving core with three catches for 40 yards.

WEEK 11: ROCKY MOUNTAIN

2011 EOU FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK 7-3, 7-2 FRONTIER

MAKE THAT LUCKY NUMBER SEVENTh e Mountaineers won their seventh game of the season last Saturday. EOU has won seven games in a single season only three times in the program’s 82-year existence. Th e last seven-win season came in 2009 when Eastern fi nished 7-4. Th e Mountaineers’ sixth win of the season guarantees them of a winning season for the 22nd time in school history. Eastern Oregon still has an outside shot at qualifying for the school’s fi rst ever postseason appearance in football. However, it will take another win to fi nish the regular season at the very least.

WOULDN’T EIGHT BE GREATEastern Oregon can match the most wins in school history with a win Saturday. Th e Moun-taineers went 8-1 in 1981, the best record in 82 years of football. Th at was the only year EOU reached eight wins in a single season. Th at Mountaineer team began the season 6-0 before falling to Oregon Tech in the seventh game.

SAMPSON BREAKS RECORDEastern running back, Kevin Sampson, needed nine yards to break the school’s rushing yards in a career record last week. Th e senior ran for 59 yards on his fi rst carry of the game at Montana Western. Sampson has rushed for 2,737 yards in just three seasons. Th e Seattle na-tive became only the second Mountaineer to rush for 2,000 yards in a career. Tim Sicocan set the current school mark from 1997 to 2000. He ran for 2,585 yards on 535 carries. Sampson has made his mark in 521 carries.

THIRD DOWN AND BOUNDTh e Mountaineers climbed to fi rst in the NAIA in third down conversions aft er making eight of their 12 third down attempts last week. Eastern has converted 49 percent of the time on third down this season.Th e Mountaineers have made 69 of their 139 third down attempts in 2011. Th e EOU defense has held opponents to 42 percent on third down. Last week, Eastern held Montana Western to 4 of 14 on third down. Eastern Oregon is eighth in the country in fi rst downs per game averaging 22.2 per outing.

SENIORITY RULESTh e 13 Eastern Oregon student-athletes that were honored at Senior Day this season have seen plenty of success while at EOU. Th e Mountaineers accomplished quite a feat on Senior Day. EOU won its 23rd game over the past four seasons, equaling the best four-year span in school history. From 1978 to 1981, EOU totaled 23 wins and 15 losses. Eastern passed that four-year win total last Saturday with a win in Dillon. Eastern Oregon is 24-19 over the past four years.

A FRONTIER FIRST FOR EASTERNFor the fi rst time in school history, the Mountaineers had two student-athletes named Fron-tier Conference Players of the Week in the same week. Nick Magrone was named Defensive Player of the Week and Kevin Sampson was named Off ensive Player of the Week. Sampson, who only played in the fi rst, ran for 160 yards on nine carries. He ran for a score and caught one touchdown pass. Magrone intercepted his third pass of the season and returned it for a touchdown. Th e sophomore fi nished with fi ve tackles, with 0.5 a tackle for a loss.

COMPUTER LOVETh e Mountaineers are getting some re-spect from a non-human ranking system this season. Eastern Oregon is currently No. 18 in the Massey Ratings system. EOU spent quite a bit of the season at No. 2 in the poll, but got as high as the No. 1 spot aft er beating Carroll on the road. Th e Frontier Conference was previously listed as the toughest confer-ence by the ratings in the NAIA. Carroll is No. 5 in the poll.

EOU STAYS PUT IN POLLEastern remained No. 21 in the latest NAIA poll that was released Monday. despite routing Montana Western on the road last Saturday, 54-13. EOU led 47-0 at halft ime and rested key players aft er the fi rst half. Eastern has outscored its last two opponents, 95-27, and out-gained them 1,010 to 596 in off ensive yards. Eastern Oregon received 68 points in this week’s poll, three more than last week. Th e poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents.

BREAKING IT ALL DOWNVictory Sports Network recently broke down teams in the poll and where they should be ranked. Th e Mountaineers are slighted in this week’s poll by VSN’s reasoning. When combining Eastern’s Massey Rating of 18, Power Rating of 17, and BCS Rating of 12, the Moun-taineers have an average rating of 15.7. Yet, EOU remained No. 21 in the NAIA poll following its 54-13 win at Montana Western, aft er leading 47-0 at halft ime. By this reasoning, Eastern Oregon is 5.3 spots underrated from where they should be in this week’s NAIA poll.
