SEED DISCOUNTING REPORT

INTRODUCTIONSeed selection is one of the most critical decisions farmers make each year. Seeds differ greatly in both yield potential and in price, and both of these factors need to be carefully considered in order to select the most profitable seed lineup.

One of the challenges in purchasing seed each year is that it’s hard to know when you’re getting a good price. The real price of seed is often obscured by complicated discounting, bundling, and rebating schemes. While seeds have a list price, it is exceptionally uncommon for any farmer to actually pay list price. Futhermore, not all farmers receive the same discounts; different farmers oftentimes pay very different prices for the exact same seed, even from the exact same supplier. Finally, the practice of ``zone pricing” -- where the same seed has different prices in different regions -- further obfuscates prices.

We built Seed Price Transparency to help farmers navigate the complicated world of seed pricing. FBNSM members can access current and historical prices for hundreds of seeds in FBN Seed Finder -- based on actual invoices submitted by FBN members -- so they know what a fair price is for each seed.

Here, we take a deeper look at seed discounts to help better understand how these discounts are applied across the industry, and what discounts you should expect when negotiating with your seed suppliers. This analysis is based on more than 5,000 seed invoice records (which contain both the list price and the actual price paid) submitted by FBN members, covering more than 1,500 unique seed varieties from 80 different seed brands.
