M any people wonder what happens at the Bluegrass
Materials quarry in Cumming. Not only does Bluegrass turn big granite boulders into small rocks, but it also supplies needed material to build roads, be the base of strong foundations for homes, and provide multiple materials for shopping centers. Most construction sites use some form of aggregates, either through mixing it with other components to create asphalt and concrete, or just independently for a building pad or bedding for pipes.Bluegrass Materials Company is an aggregates and concrete block p r o d u c e r h e a d q u a r t e r e d i n Jacksonville, FL. At the end of March 2013, Bluegrass purchased the assets of Lafarge North America’s Ball Ground, Clayton, C u m m i n g , a n d Douglasville quarries. Ted Baker II, CEO of Bluegrass Materials said, “This is a terrific opportunity for Bluegrass Materials to continue to build the company and will significantly expand our aggregates foot print into one of the most dynamic markets in the country. We are very much looking forward to working with the employees at these facilities and to continuing the high standard of safety excellence that they have set.”Bluegrass Materials Company, LLC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Panadero Aggregates Holdings, LLC (“Panadero”). Panadero was formed in 2010 by John D. Baker II and Ted Baker II, formerly of Florida Rock Industries, to acquire, develop and operate aggregates and o t h e r c o n s t r u c t i o n r e l a t e d materials businesses. The company currently owns and operates eleven rock quarries, one sand plant and two concrete block manufacturing
plants located in Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia.
Bluegrass Materials strives to be a leader in safety and to start each work day with a safety-centered “Note of the Day”. Bluegrass’ employees are the company’s most valuable assets and the company strives to send each one home safely every day. The Cumming location has approximately forty employees, as well as tenants on site consisting of four ready mix plants, two asphalt plants and one landscape supplier. A Big Thanks to Stars and Strikes of CummingF orsyth County Schools Secretaries and Administrative Assistants were honored
with a back-to-school luncheon sponsored by Stars and Strikes of Cumming. Approximately 150 of Forsyth County Schools’ finest enjoyed a delicious buffet. Several door prizes were given away – donated by Stars and Strikes and other Partners in Education. Dr. Evans, Valery Hall and Jennifer Caracciolo welcomed the staff back to their first official day. This is one of many events that Stars and Strikes has sponsored for Forsyth County Schools throughout the year. In the past they have provided free coupons for all FCS students entering kindergarten, donated free gifts to the Teachers of the Year, provided gifts to winners at the county wide Spelling Bee, and worked with the Student Support Department in offering incentives to our students. Stars and Strikes continual involvement in the school system makes them a highly valued Partner in Education.

County Schools is to provide an on-going partnership between education and business/industry to prepare the students of our communi ty wi th the sk i l l s necessary to meet world-class standards, successfully continue life-long learning, and enter the marketplace as productive citizens. CTAE prov ides “seamless” instruction that connects academic and technical skills to future e d u c a t i o n a l a n d c a r e e r opportunities. Options within the program offer curriculum and instruction linked to industry standards in labs featuring the latest technology. Programs are also supported through advisory councils comprised of community, business, and educational leaders that have on-going discussions about economic and workforce initiatives impacting Forsyth County and how best to shape
CTAE programs based on the local needs of our community.Forsyth County Schools off ers a variety of career pathways that meet the demands of the modern workplace by equipping students for college and careers. Aft er leaving high school, students continue future training at colleges, universities, and two-year technical
colleges. Several of the CTAE courses are also articulated with post-secondary technical colleges, and Forsyth County Schools has a large student presence at Lanier Technical College through career-related dual enrollment. Forsyth County Schools has also recently partnered with the Georgia Department of Education and Siemens Industry, Inc. to implement the fi rst of many Global Workforce Initiative (GWI) programs. Th e elements of these solutions will include the following areas:Academics: Utilizing the training materials of corporate partners to revise teaching curricula for relevant career pathways.Wo r k - S t u d y / E x t e r n s h i p s : Enhancing skills training by providing students with hands-on work experiences in their chosen area of study.Talent Matching System: An electronic platform that enables businesses and educators to ensure an appropriate number of students are enrolled and progressing through the pathways program. Th anks to this collaboration, students enrolled in a manufacturing
pathway at South Forsyth HS can now receive instruction from a teacher trained by Siemens, utilizing course materials that were developed from their real-world training curricula. Th ese students will be in a pipeline to employment, as Siemens has committed to hiring a number of them as interns, which will give them the opportunity to thereaft er apply for long-term employment.Why are these types of partnerships a focus in Forsyth County? Th e skills gap in America is very real. Th e U.S. Department of Labor has estimated that more than 3 million jobs go unfi lled in our country due to a lack of properly trained workers. Georgia responded to this problem by creating House Bill 186 in the spring of 2011, enacting the Career Pathways program which became a part of the state’s educational policy. In 2012, this model was created to facilitate cooperation among the business and educational communities in order to ensure Georgia students received the necessary training to qualify for jobs that were going unfi lled. Ultimately, participating students graduate with a certifi cation in a skill of their choosing which helps them to gain employment aft er graduation. Because Forsyth County
Schools have shown an exceptional commitment to career readiness and business engagement, the community was a natural partner for the fi rst signifi cant solution.What does it mean for business and industry in Forsyth County? Th ese eff orts enable Forsyth County to take another step forward toward developing a platform for public-private partnerships and encourage businesses and educational communities to participate in the career pathways program. In addition to the social benefi ts provided by these collaborations, businesses will benefi t by gaining access to talent pools of skilled workers, which will reduce their recruiting, training and retention costs. Th ese eff orts, in general, are ultimately about fi lling jobs and growing our community—the proverbial “win-win” scenario. O r g a n i z a t i o n f o r E c o n o m i c Co-opera t ion and Development (OECD), the United States no longer leads the world in terms of education. However, our local community’s school system continues to thrive at an accelerated rate.In October of 2013 Forsyth County Schools earned the highest SAT scores in the State of Georgia – scoring 82 points higher than the national average score of 1498. The Technology Association of Georgia also awarded Forsyth Central High School’s Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) Academy the 2013 High School STEM Education Award.The school system’s relationship with the local business sector has played a major role in the fostering the community’s academic success . According to Mavis Sanders of Johns Hopkins University, “community involvement in schools is important for building and maintaining healthy communities.” In her publication entitled Community Involvement in Schools: From Concept to Practice, she asserts that “when properly executed, community involvement in schools can be the little extra that makes a big difference.”Last year the local school system and the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce partnered to create a new community ini t iat ive cal led the Principal for a Day program. Business Chronicle held a sold-out event at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta to name the 2013 Atlanta’s Best Places to Work. Forsyth County-based Morrow Family Medicine earned the coveted distinction of Best Places to Work in the small employer category, ranking 2 5 o u t o f 6 0 c o m p a n i e s .
“We are truly honored to have received this recognition,” said Dr. Jim Morrow. “When we opened our private practice in June 2011, we focused on bringing care back to health care, and have never wavered from our mission.”
