Brief Write-up on FDP GNFC‟s Narmada Education & Scientific Research Society managed Narmada College of Computer Application, Zadeshwar had organized a well-crafted and planned One Week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Active Teaching Learning Strategies” during 22-26 April, 2013. The FDP was organized with support from Computer Society of India (CSI), Surat Chapter and in technical collaboration with Gujarat Technological University (GTU), Ahmedabad. Only faculties were eligible for attending the FDP and 30 faculties from 15 different institutions/departments spread all-over Gujarat state participated in the FDP. The faculties were from institutions like Shroff Institute Ankleshwar, S.P.University Anand, Parul Institute Baroda, VNSGU Surat, Ganpat University Mehsana and also those from Bharuch District like Kadakia College Ankleshwar, IQRA BCA College Dahegam, Valia BCA College Valia, SVMIT Bharuch, Narmada Calorx International School, etc.
On first day, 22nd April 2013, the FDP was inaugurated by Sh. V.C. Bhatt, AGM, GNFC & Trustee, NEST and Dr. B.M.Raval, Principal, NCSC. The first session was taken by Sh. V.C. Bhatt on HOLISTIC EDUCATION. He discussed and suggested various tips and techniques for effective education. The next session was on “ACTIVE TEACHING LEARNING STRATEGIES: THE CONCEPTS & ITS IMPORTANCE PART1” conducted by Dr. Jatinderkumar R. Saini. He elaborated what to do during class room teaching under the title “THOU SHALL”. He showed various techniques like pause procedure, shift the balance of power, animations, cartoons, videos by giving interesting examples. All participants learnt many creative ideas. After lunch, we visited the Narmada Calorx Public School and came to know about smart board. The participants were also provided hands-on experience of using Smart Boards. The last session was on “creative Innovative Environment in Classrooms” taken by Sh. Nitin Tailor, CEO & founder of Social Sristi –social innovation company, MTech from IIIT Bombay & 2nd prize winner of startup week end International competition at IIM, Ahmedabad. He showed his ideas by innovative online presentation tool prezi.
On 2nd day, 23rd April 2013, Dr. Jatinderkumar R Saini started talk on “Active Teaching Learning strategies: the concepts & its importance part
2. He talked about “THOU SHALL NOT”. He showed various techniques by giving an example and videos. He engaged participants by various activities like 3-minute paper activity, exchange of notes, group discussion, sharing of ideas. He differentiated about group discussion and debate. The next session was taken by Dr. Manisha V. Shukla, Principal I/C, MSK Law college. He talked about Professional Ethics and career orientation. In post lunch session, Sh. Nitin Tailor elaborated on “Redefining career with entrepreneurship and Innovation approach”. The FDP also included, first of its kind gesture, by inviting parents and providing them a platform to interact with the teaching fraternity and sharing their thoughts/views and expectations from the teaching fraternity. The last session was allocated to parents.
On 3rd day, 24th April 2013, 1st session was started by Sh. Bhavin Shah, professional corporate trainer & visiting faculty. His topic was Effective Body language. He explained the importance of body language. He showed three interesting demos. All participants enjoyed and learnt various ideas from these demos. The next session was of madam Krishna Parkar, principal, Narmada calrox public school. She differentiated between college teaching and school teaching. She briefly explained all learning activities like quizzes, modeling, examples, peer teaching, group projects, handouts, debate, storytelling, interviews, virtual field trips etc. The 3rd session was taken by Dr. Jatinderkumar Saini on various teaching pedagogies. He mainly discussed on “THOU SHALL NOT” / What should not be done? during teaching. The last session of the day was taken by Dr. D. K. Verma, Dept of Maths, NCSC. He discussed various teaching strategies of IITs.
On 4th day, 25th April 2013, the 1st session was started by Sh. R.B.Vadia, Rtd. General Manager, GNFC. He explained how to improve Instruction and Recitation. Participants‟ learnt many ideas from this session. The next session was taken by Sh. Bhavin Chauhan on “Effective Non-verbal Skills for teachers”. He explained about the types of communication, importance of non-verbal communication, communication barriers, importance of self respect etc. The 3rd session was on “Teaching and Learning: Ancient Indian Perspectives” taken by Sh. Subhash yadav, Faculty, NCM. He also explained the importance of mother tongue and English language, Upnishad, Puran etc. The 4th and last session was taken by Dr. Trupti Madam, I/C director of NCM on “Educational Psychology”. She explained about what is good teaching,
role of educational psychology, characteristics of effective teachers, various theories for teachers and cognitive development.
On fifth day, 26th April 2013, the 1st session was taken by Smita Nair madam, Asst prof and HOD, BBA programme. Her topic was “USING CASEMETHOD FOR EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM TEACHING”. She discussed traditional and case method, benefits of case method and the role of instructor in case method. She had also given one case to the participants. Other session was taken by Dr. Jatinderkumar Saini. He demonstrated and elaborated the use of Flash card, Sticky notes and other active strategies. In 3rd session, participants shared their views and good practices. The last session was the valedictory session. Sh. R.B.Panchal, GM, GNFC & Trustee NEST addressed and distributed the certificates to participants.
The FDP was intended to impart training to faculties so that they can design the lectures in such a way that the students are „automatically pulled‟ and attracted towards the lecture and inside the lecture also they can remain attentive enough to retain whatever knowledge is dissipated during the 60 minutes of the lecture, ultimately improving concentration and hence the results of the students.
On 24th April, 2013, the FDP was also covered by the reputed media personnel in Bharuch including Channel Narmada and Channel IN. On the same date, a press note was also issued by Narmada College of Computer Application.
The organizers are thankful to all the participants for coming to NCCA, their HODs/Principals/Directors for understanding the importance of the FDP and relieving their faculties. The organizers are also thankful to all the resource persons and other dignitaries for sparing their precious time to contribute to the FDP.
