What is the FE Exam and why should I take it?

• The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is typically the first step in the process leading to the P.E. license. 

• It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree. 

• The FE is a computer‐based exam that is administered year‐round in testing windows at NCEES‐approved Pearson VUE test centers.

Content of the Exam / Exam Disciplines

• The FE is offered in seven disciplines.– FE Chemical– FE Civil– FE Electrical and Computer– FE Environmental– FE Industrial– FE Mechanical– FE Other Disciplines

Duration of the Exam

• The FE contains 110 multiple‐choice questions. • The exam appointment time is 6 hours long

– Includes a nondisclosure agreement, – Tutorial (8 minutes), – The exam (5 hours and 20 minutes), – A scheduled break (25 minutes), and – A brief survey.

Year‐Round Testing Opportunities. NCEES computer‐based exams are offered in testing windows throughout the year during the following months:• January–February• April–May• July–August• October–November• Exams are not administered during March, June, September, and December.

Exam Day Experiences• What may I bring into the exam room?

– The ID used during the admission process– A calculator that complies with the current NCEES 

Calculator Policy– Key to your test center locker– Reusable booklet supplied by Pearson VUE– Eyeglasses (without the case)– Light sweater or jacket– Items included in the Pearson VUE Comfort Aid List

FE Prep and Reference materials• FE Reference Handbook

– Can be purchased or is Free as a Download– A searchable, electronic copy will be displayed on the monitor during the exam

• Practice Exams ($49.95)– Consists of 50 questions and functions much the same as the actual exam.

– Can be finished in one sitting or completed within 90 days of starting it. Either way, you will have a total of 2.5 hours to complete it.  

– Can be submitted for scoring one time (only).– Includes the same 50 questions each time it is ordered.

Scoring and reporting

• FE exam results are typically available 7–10 days after you take the exam. 

• You will receive an email notification from NCEES with instructions to view your results in your MyNCEES account.
