Table of Contents Fundamentals of Engineering

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two exams required for professional licensure. The FE exam includes topics covered in undergraduate engineering courses; therefore, taking the exam during your junior or senior year of college may make the exam easier to pass.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) writes the exam, and it is administered at the state level eight months out of the year.

Principles and Practice of Engineering The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam is the second of two exams required for professional licensure. Applicants for the PE have already passed the FE/EIT and earned the required amount of professional engineering experience. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) writes the exam, and it is administered at the state level twice a year.

Structural EngineeringThe Structural Engineering (SE) exam is the new, 16-hour exam that replaced the separate Structural I and II exams. The SE exam is a breadth and depth exam offered in two components on successive days. The Vertical Forces (Gravity/Other) and Incidental Lateral component is offered only on Friday, and focuses on gravity loads and lateral earth pressures. The Lateral Forces (Wind/Earthquake) component is offered only on Saturday and focuses on wind/earthquake loads.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) writes the exam, and it is administered at the state level twice a year.

FE Exam is now offered 12 months a year.
