Re: Report on Best Shop that serves Café Latte in or adjacent to UNT

Dear Prof. Ed O’Casey

Team Coffee is pleased to present a report on the best coffee shop that has a reputation of serving a good café latte in or adjacent to the University of North Texas. This is an assignment for our technical writing class and an aid for students to understand that there is more than one shop that serves good café latte.

For this report, we compared the pros and cons on four selected coffee shops located within or close to the UNT campus. This report examines Big Mike’s Coffee, Einstein Bros Bagel, the Cyber Café, and Green Mountain coffee. We have realized that students have a variety of preferences for coffee so we chose a common drink: a Café Latte. Our research is based on student needs and willingness to buy a café latte in either coffee shop.

Executive Summary 1Executive Summary

Team Coffee investigated what is the best coffee shop that has a reputation of serving a good café latte in or adjacent to the University of North Texas. This report can serve as an aid for students to understand that there is more than one shop that serves good café latte.

For this report, we compared the pros and cons on four selected coffee shops located within or close to the UNT campus. Team Coffee examines

Big Mike’s Coffee, Einstein Bros Bagel, the Cyber Café, and Green Mountain coffee.

To minimize the variety of a student’s coffee preferences we chose a common drink: a Café Latte. Our research is based on student needs and willingness to buy a café latte in either coffee shop. The team conducted an online survey with questions about a shop’s atmosphere and the coffee product.

Collectively, Team Coffee recommends Big Mike’s Coffee for a tasty and affordable café latte.

2 Introduction

Introduction

Many students go to coffee shops to relax and sip on a café latte. But there are so many to choose from within walking distance. This report will ease a student’s decision about which coffee shop in the University of North Texas has a reputation of serving a good café latte.

Our team investigates the pros and cons about four selected coffee shops that are popular among the student population at the University of North Texas. We began by reviewing a previous report about the best coffee shops surrounding the university. We focused on four shops the past report has not covered.

Although our questions are similar, we focused on a single common product every shop has on their menu: a café latte. By limiting the menu options to a familiar drink, the student will focus on other aspects of a shop’s atmosphere and give a better response about the shops.

In the report that follows, we explain how we determined to choose four shops, examined the options and presented recommendations that are cost-effective without sacrificing quality and student satisfaction.

Methods 3Methods

The following list is a set of criteria we constructed to determine our coffee shop selection:

Shop has to be within UNT grounds or adjacent from the campus Shop must have to a Café Latte product in their menu* Coffee has to be the primary selling item Coffee has to be brewed on the spot*

* The minimum criteria for shop selection are that the coffee has to be brewed on the spot and that they have a café latte on their menu.

Based on the set criteria, we sought out the coffee shops that are within the university grounds. We choose areas that had a dense population of students everyday of the week.

We began our search in the Union are and found three coffee shops located in areas with the heaviest student populace:

1. The Cyber Café located in the back of the Willis Library with neon signs,

2. Green Mountain Coffee near the book exchange entrance of the Union bookstore,

3. and Einstein Bros Bagels in the Syndicate, in front of the 1 o’clock lounge.

We sought to include one more shop and looked at the Northeast section of the campus on the intersection of Hickory and Ave A/ Fry Street. This area contained popular bars, fast food joints and a coffee shop that is straight across from the university grounds: Bike Mike’s Coffee.

Each shop we selected met the criteria and granted us permission to perform our report on them.

After determining our options, we decided to conduct an online survey through SurveyMonkey.com because it would reach to every student and we can expect results sooner.

The survey is broken into four parts, each part representing one of the four shops. In each part, we asked two questions about the shop’s atmosphere and their café latte product as shown in Figure 1.1

Figure 1.1 displays the part for Big Mike’s Coffee

We designed the survey asking the student about certain qualities they liked about each shop on a scale of 1-5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best or excellent.

The first question asks about the shop’sAmbiance Cleanliness Reputation Wait time or N/A*

The second question asks about the productsAppearance Aroma Flavor Price And Other**

* The N/A rating option is included because we understand that not one student has been in every shop we selected.

**We also included the option Other in case the student has another attribute they feel is important to add.

Conclusions

The graph displays the collected responses from the survey. According to our research:

Green Mountain contained insufficient responses to compare with the other shops so it was not included.

Although the Cyber Café is conveniently located in the highest concentration of the student populace, it had less positive responses compared to the other shops, especially with the questions about the café latte.

Einstein Bros Bagels had more positive results than the Cyber Café. It does have similar results with the Cyber Café in terms of the shop’s cleanliness and wait time. But overall, the shop has a good reputation.

Bike Mike’s Coffee had the most positive results than the other shops. The shops shares similar results with Einstein Bros Bagels in terms of reputation but it exceeds in all the other questions, especially in terms of a café latte’s price and flavor.

Recommendations

Big Mike’s Coffee earned the highest positive results out of the rest of the shops. Students highly agree on price and flavor of the shop’s café latte. With a reputation just as good as a chain shop, we recommend Big Mike’s Coffee for a tasty and affordable café latte.
