expansion will also create direct and indirect employment opportunity for
the local people.
2.3 Need for the project and its importance to the country and the region:
Due to market demand of iron ore for domestic steel, sponge,
pelletisation and sinter industries and to meet the export demand, the
project proponent wishes to increase the production of ROM Iron ore
from 2.85 million TPA to 7.0 million TPA & dry screening & crushing of
1.06 million TPA of low grade ore from old stacks/dumps (total handling
of 8.06 million TPA). Approval of wet beneficiation plant with throughput
capacity of 1.44 million TPA has already been accorded in earlier
environment clearance vide letter no. J-11015/206/2012-IA.II (M) dated
19.11.2013 and the same will continue. The Government will earn more
revenue and more job opportunities will be created. Besides those, more
indirect employment will be generated through handling of material,
transportation, etc. which will result in economic improvement of the
people in the locality. Many people, apart from the above will get other
avenues for livelihood, which will help, in improving the economic and
social status of the people in the area.
2.4 Demand-Supply Gap: The Indian Steel industry has entered into new development stage from
2005-06, riding high on the resurgent economy and rising demand of
steel. Rapid rise in production has resulted India to become the 5th
largest producer of steel. It is estimated that, India’s steel consumption
will continue to grow at nearly 16% rate annually, fueled by the demand
of construction project. The National Steel Policy envisaged steel
production to reach 300 million tonnes by 2025. So, considering these
huge demands of iron ore for steel industries, the supply is not
sufficient. Moreover there is demand of iron ore for sponge &pelletisation

M/s Rungta Sons Pvt. Ltd.
Ecomen Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. Page 8
industries also. So, this project is important for partial fulfilling of
demand.
2.5 Imports Vs. Indigenous Production:
To minimize the growing import of steel in India it is necessary to
increase the indigenous production of steel. To import of raw material it
is necessary to produce more iron ore as raw material. The expansion of
the project will partially meet the demand of raw material for our
upcoming steel industry.
2.6 Export Possibilities:
China, Korea& Japan being the major crude steel producer of World,
depend partly on India for iron ore as raw material. India is the 3rd
largest iron ore provider to China’s steel industry. So there is always an
export possibility of iron ore from this mine.
2.7 Domestic/Export markets: The sized iron ore from this mine has demand in domestic steel &
sponge industries. During production of lump iron ore, fines of iron ore
will be generated automatically, this iron ore fines are exported to China
as well as supplied to domestic pelletisation/sinter plants.
2.8 Employment Generation (direct & indirect) due to the project: Manpower:
Existing and proposed
Present employment in the mine is 353. Besides direct employment, 400
persons are now indirectly employed in contract jobs and transportation
jobs which are mainly extended to the local tribes. Expected indirect
employment after expansion is 530 in contract and transportation jobs.
