Feasibility Study on Installation of Hybrid

Power Generation System In Mozambique

Under the BOCM

New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) EX Research Institute Ltd.

Nippon Biodiesel Fuel Co., Ltd.

・Study the feasibility of GHG emission reduction by introducing Hybrid System; consist of PV and diesel generator (DG) fired with Jatropha Oil for rural electrification ・Establish a model for energy supply business in remote villages in cooperation with local community of rural areas that can deliver economic and social development to the local communities

“Feasibility Study on Installation of Hybrid Power Generation System In Mozambique Under the BOCM” (Study for Project Development and Organization )

Proposed by:EX research Institute Ltd., Nippon Biodiesel Fuel Co. Ltd.

NEDO’s Feasibility Studies with the Aim of Developing a Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism Country:Mozambique Sector:Biomass &Solar Power

Survey in Summary

① Identification of potential financial source ② Implementation of pilot Project ③ Identification and detailed survey of candidate site ④ Establishment of MRV methodology, ⑤ Estimation of GHG emission reduction potential ⑥ Preparation of business implementation plan ⑦ Analysis of financial viability and economical effects ⑧ Evaluation of environmental and social impact

Site: 3,000 villages in North and Central Regions(Cabo-delgado, Nampla and Niassa) ○ ADM(local subsidiary of NBF) ○ Ministry of Energy / FUNAE ○ MICOA(DNA of Mozambique) ○ Movitel(local Mobile phone carrier) ○ Millenium bim(local bank) ○ Lurio University

By promoting low-carbon energy technology, GHG emission reduction will be delivered along with contribution to provision of sustainable energy, economical development, and poverty alleviation., that the government of Mozambique is aiming.

Reference scenario Emission reductions by project

The system/composition to be installed in the project is designed based on Japanese cutting-edge technologies. The latest technology is employed for the hybrid control system, which will maximize the utilization of solar power, rich in Mozambique. In addition, the whole system is designed to match the requirements in electrification of remote villages in Mozambique where road network is under development. There is no need for transport the fuel for DG, as it can produce fuel oil on sites from Jatropah procured near the sites. Furthermore, all the major components are mounted in 20ft. containers, which enables easy transportation and installation in remote areas.

<System composition(50kw unit)> ① Fuel production + Biodiesel power generator Consists of oil expeller, degumming processes. Capable of produce 12.5L/h fuel oil from 50 kg/h Jatropha seeds. The minimum unit of DG capacity is 50kw. ② Solar power generation 20kw output capacity, consists of 2 units of 10kW PV array ③ Hybrid control system Employ power conditioner that can remotely controllable, which enables maximum output of solar power generation
