Sharing Parish Visit… Thanks to all who made the visit of our Sharing Parish, St. Procopius such a wonderful day. The pastor was unable to be with us, and we enjoyed the presence of the Associate Pastor, Fr. Pat Casey, S.J. and a score of their parishioners. The St. Elizabeth Parish choir were in fine voice, and the St. Elizabeth Seton Social Action Ministry provided a lovely repast in the Church Hall after Mass. Praying together, and sharing a meal make good bonds. The Gym Explodes…. Last Friday, October 25th, the Cardinal Bernardin School hosted a Halloween party in our parish gym. Earlier in the day, I put on a plaid work shirt, an Irish cap, and an old man’s mask, and went through all the classrooms of the school [and I did the same this past week in many of the Religious Education Classes] to scare the children, and adults, and to warn them about being safe when trick-or-treating. The startled looks on people’s faces was incredible. When I was at the party, the children kept asking me to put the mask back on. I think that the little rascals like me better that way! If we could only bottle the energy evident at a children’s party. They loved being in costume, and chasing one another around the gym. They also loved when the d.j. played the song “Gangum Style”—that got everyone out dancing/hopping on the gym floor. A good time was had by all. Immigration Reform… Later in this bulletin is a reproduction of a recent letter that I sent, along with many other Catholic pastors and priests to our local Congressman Dan Lipinski. The letter speaks for itself, and calls on him to support arguments made by the American Catholic bishops calling for comprehensive immigration reform of our broken immigration system. But I would like to give you some background on this issue. Recently a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton came to ask of me to write a letter to American Immigration to support her husband’s efforts to immigrate to this country. She came to the United States with three young children, one a babe in arms at the time, several years ago. While she and their children could legally come here, at that time her husband, the father of their

three children, could not. Since then she has achieved U.S. citizenship, and is now trying to reunite her husband with their family. It was an honor for me to write in support of this family reunification effort, and on behalf of a truly brave woman who is at the moment raising her children alone. There is something wrong with an immigration system that divides families in such a way. Sometimes we think that the immigration reform issue does not effect our parish. It does. It effects people you may be sharing the Sign of Peace with before Communion. There is another long-time parishioner of our parish who entered the United States illegally decades ago. He did not cross over the Rio Grande, but came in from Toronto, Canada. Eventually he married a U.S. citizen, and they had children. One day U.S. immigration caught up with his undocumented status. But in those years, decades ago, the Immigration Agent brought our parishioner to Detroit, had him cross over into Canada, and was waiting for him back here on U.S. soil to bring him into the country legally, and to ensure nothing went wrong. In those days, the value of preserving a family was maintained and promoted. It could be that way again. I encourage our parishioners to write to Congressman Lipinski on behalf of comprehensive immigration reform. Letters can be addressed to: Representative Daniel Lipinski 3rd Congressional District 6245 South Archer Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60638 Again, sometimes we think issues like immigration reform do not effect our parishioners. Please know that they do, and your writing to the congressman can make a difference. A Christmas Smorgasbord…. Over the next several weeks leading up to Christmas Day, St. Elizabeth Seton parishioners will have a number of opportunities to imitate God the Father’s generosity in gifting our world with Jesus. Christmas celebrates the mystery of the incarnation—God becoming man. We see God the Father’s love for our world in giving us his only son, and taking on our very nature. We respond in faith by believing in Jesus as our Savior, and in love by celebrating bonds with family, friends and community. For so many of us it “would not be Christmas’ if we did not

“do” something for someone else. Making a friendly call, sending a Christmas card or e-mail, giving a gift, doing some random act of generosity and kindness — are ways that we all have of “getting into the spirit of the season” and of making Christmas for others. Our parish provides a number of wonderful opportunities for people to be involved in assisting others. Whether it is the drive for the special need adults of St. Coletta Homes; the Ham or Turkey Drive or the Christmas Gift Drive for our sharing parish, St. Procopius; the Toy Drive for Respond Now, or supporting Fair Trade internationally, we all have our favorite ways that we seek to make Christmas for others, and for ourselves. Please appreciate that you have a veritable smorgasbord of good causes that you can assist. While you may be tempted like I am to just pull up a chair at a smorgasbord and dive in eating it all — common sense eventually kicks in for me, and I choose a little of this and that which are my favorites. We may all love a buffet, but we can not eat it all. Similarly, as these drives roll out over the coming weeks, pick those which tug at your heart. At the start of October I hosted my high school Quigley Preparatory Seminary South Class of 1973 40th Reunion in our Parish Life Center. After all party expenses were paid, all remaining $500 was donated to Catholic Charities. I admire the work that the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Charities does and I told my classmates before they came that if we had any funds left over, this would be where they would be sent. As a result a number of the men gave extra funds. We not only had a fun reunion, but we did well for others. Similarly, all these drives are meant to help others in need, but they do us good as well. Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos y Hermanas… Thanks to all who contributed to the special second collection last weekend to support the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos y Hermanas. A generous total of $6,575.02 was donated to this worthy charity. Save The Date… Next Sunday, Nov. 10th is the Parish Women’s Club Vendor and Craft Fair in the Parish Life Center from 8:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. It is a great place for Santa’s helpers to start their work!

The Christifideles Award… Each year the Archdiocese of Chicago presents the “Christifideles Award” to people from every parish across the Archdiocese. This year, Bill Wisnasky and Elizabeth Wisnasky will receive the award this Sunday afternoon at Holy Name Cathedral from Cardinal Francis George O.M.I. They are receiving the award for their ongoing Catholic witness, and for their care for those who are in need by providing leadership to our parish Social Action Ministry. Over the years they have been vocal advocates for the poor, and have spearheaded many of our parishes efforts to care for those in need. I congratulate them on this award and thank them for decades of advocacy and work. At this award ceremony this Sunday afternoon, the Cardinal will also bestow one of the six Bishop Quarter Awards [one award per Vicariate] to Sister Nancy Swanson, R.S.M. and the Courage Program, based at St. Germaine Parish in Oak Lawn, who has done heroic work for decades in assisting girls who are pregnant. Courage is strongly supported by southwest side parishes, and has been the wheel hitting the road in being a tangible effort to help young mothers. We also congratulate Sister Nancy Swanson R.S.M. for this well-deserved recognition. If You Cannot Be Smart, Then Be Lucky... Last week’s Trivia Event was great fun and a great success. The Joseph and Karen Beninato Family Table won the contest, and Fr. Stan Kuca won the Split-the-Pot prize of $136.00. If you can not be smart, then be lucky!

Keep Smiling...

Page Four THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 3, 2013

Reflections for Thirty Second

Sunday in Ordinary Time Nov. 10, 2013

In the days before Jesus was arrested, various groups, including the scribes, the Pharisees, and now the Sadducees, tried to trap Jesus in His words, so they would have a case to bring against Him.

The issue has to do with the belief in the resurrection of the body, which the Sadducees did not hold.

NEXT SUNDAY’S FOCUS: TAKING THE LONG VIEW

God of the living, we thank you for the promise you have given us in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. We thank you for the faith that tells us that those who die in Him will rise in Him. May this prom-ise, rooted in our bap-tism, continue to give us hope in our difficulties.

The Sadducees did not accept the resurrec-tion from the dead (as the Pharisees did). Therefore, they tried to trap Jesus by bringing up a case of a woman who had seven hus-

bands. When a man died without an heir, the widow was to marry the next of kin. This woman married seven brothers in a row. They asked Jesus whose wife would she be in the resurrection. One problem with this question was that they were asking who owned her in heaven. Jesus responded that it was not like that in heaven. We do not belong to one an-other in heaven. The love of heaven is not exclusive (saying we can only love one and not another). It is a love for all without limit.

He is not God of the dead, but of the living (Luke 20:27-38).

To get the full impact of the first reading, I strongly suggest you go to your Bible and

read Second Maccabees, Chapter 7. You wonder what the mother of the Maccabees would have said to the Sadducees trying to trap Jesus over belief in the resurrection of the body. How would this woman, who watched the thugs of a sadistic king cruelly torture with whips and scourges her seven sons over their refusal to eat pork, ever have been able to encourage her sons to remain faithful to God’s law without a belief in the resurrection? This belief was her rock. It justified her taking the long view, that their death, in fidelity to God, gives way to a bod-ily resurrection. For the Sadducees, however, faith was based on the Torah (the Pentateuch). Only what was written in the Torah had to be believed. Since there is no mention of resurrec-tion, they rejected it. And they use a story of a woman marrying seven brothers to trap Jesus. Jesus says two things in response. First, what happens in the next life is going to be different, not the same old, same old. Second, when God spoke the Divine Name to Moses, God did not say, “I was the God of your dead ancestors.” Rather, God said, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Implication: God is a God of the living—in God all are alive. Couple that with Jesus’ own resurrection and you have good reason for this hope we carry in our hearts.

Readings for the Week November 4-9 Mon.: Rom 11:29-36; Lk 14:12-14 Tues.: Rom 12:5-16b; Lk 14:15-24 Wed.: Rom 13:8-10; Lk 14:25-33 Thur.: Rom 14:7-12; Lk 15:1-10 Fri.: Rom 15:14-21; Lk 16:1-8 Sat.: Ex 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; 1 Cor 3:9c-11, 16-17; Jn 2:13-22

REFLECTION

The King of the world will raise us up to live again forever (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14). This is a powerful account of a mother and seven sons who were arrested during a per-secution of the Jews. The emperor of Syria, Antiochus Epiphanes, wanted to unify his extensive empire by ordering all peoples to give up their local religious practices and to adopt the Greek way of life. Many peoples did this, but the Jewish people rebelled against such tyranny. The Maccabees were a family that led the rebellion. There were many mar-

tyrs. People who circumcised their babies or who refused to eat pork were put to death. This account shows the heroism of a mother and her seven sons. It speaks of the fact that God would reward them for their fidelity even after they died. This means that they believed in the Resurrection of the dead (a concept that only arose late in the history of Old Tes-tament times).

The Word of God was preached to the Thes-salonians. They knew what was right and just and now had to live it. The author asks for prayers so that the word of the Lord might be accepted as readily by others. It is God who was behind this success. Yet, there are some who could not accept that word. Sometimes it

is a question of sinful rejection; at other times it might be that they have not yet received the gift of faith. God calls each of us in God’s own time. Very few of us will be called to give wit-ness to the faith as martyrs, but each one of us is called to give an everyday witness in the ordinary, common events of life.

May the Lord encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word (2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5).

Journey with the Lord and let your heart hear God’s Words….

By Margie Guadagno St. Elizabeth Seton Pastoral Associate

When the disciples

met Jesus

on the road,

they were

disappointed

and sad.

He walked with them

and listened to

their story.

Then, by opening up

the Scriptures

He gave them hope!

He helped them see

that they were

not abandoned

or left orphaned,

that God

was with them

and would

always be part

of their journey.

The Road To Emmaus The Road To Emmaus The Road To Emmaus

Remembering and Missing

M Y NEW GRANDDAUGHTER, ARYA, IS A JOY! OF COURSE, ALL BABIES ARE A JOY. But,

we each know that OUR grandchildren are the best!! In a few days, she’ll be one month old already and weighs in at 10 ½ pounds. She still sleeps a lot, but when she is awake, she bats her little lashes and then gives you the eye that asks, “Got milk?” The unfortunate thing is, she lives on the north side of Chicago. This is the first time one my grandbabies has lived so far away. Though, it’s hard to complain when so many grandmas have little ones that live in another state. However, she has already made two visits to my house and they have been grand occasions. First off, Grandpa goes to the bakery and gets chocolate donuts for Arya’s mom and dad. Then I put on the coffee and call my mother and sister to come over. We get so excited and poor little Arya just has to put up with being hugged and kissed and sniffed at. (Don’t you just love the smell of a new baby?) Not having a new little one in the family for 12 years has turned us into goofy rela-tives who act as if they have never seen a baby before! And each one of us has their own special weakness. My sister loves her feet, I love her cheek right in front of her ear, and my mother—well, my mother just loves all of her! She checks out every inch of her every time she sees her. But, there is one thing that we all do. We all reflect on how much my dad would have loved seeing her. He was the adored grandpa. He was also the favorite uncle for all my cousins. And, when my siblings and I were teenagers, he was the best-liked dad in our group of friends. He always made you feel that you were the most important per-

son on earth. You always knew how much he loved you. And all new little babies in the family were treated to special hugs and kisses… and the Ring-A-Ding-Ding. It started from the first time he held them. He would gently rock them all the while crooning Ring-A-Ding-Ding. As they grew older, the rocking got more boisterous and the crooning got louder. By the time they were six or seven months old, they would be positioned on his knee and bounced up and down while my dad wildly belted out Ring-A-Ding-Ding!!! And once they started talking, the minute they saw him they would crawl up on his knee and say “Ring-A-Ding Grandpa!” I’m sure as spring time rolls around all of us will be treating Arya to the Ring-A-Ding-Ding. But it won’t be coming from us, it will be a treasure we are passing on to her from my dad, a bit of him that lives on. His pres-ence continues to surround all of us. Granted, some days we feel it more than others. But, since Arya’s birth, I have been keenly aware of his absence and mourn his loss anew. He was a gentle, loving soul who was deeply loved by us and he will continue to be in our most precious of memories for the rest of our lives.

D uring this month of November, the Church calls all of us to remem-ber our loved ones who now rest in

the arms of God. Though we do so with sadness because they are no longer with us physically, let us also do so in gratitude and thanksgiving for all the lessons they taught us and the great gifts they shared with us. May we also include a little prayer of hope that everyone can experience a Ring-A-Ding-Ding grandpa in their lives.

The Rajana Association is a nonprofit organization for in-come generation and skills train-ing, producing fair trade prod-ucts using traditional Cambo-dian skills with contemporary designs. The name “Rajana” means “design” in Khmer. Ra-jana Association focuses on the rural and urban poor, and small producers of handicrafts. Rajana trains young Cambodians in tra-ditional craft–making skills, as well as in accounting, market-ing, computer courses and Eng-lish. Through development of traditional craft–making skills, Rajana helps maintain and re-build Cambodia’s rich cultural traditions, damaged in the country’s wars.

Rajana Association began in 1995 as an income–generating project of the British nongov-ernmental organization South-east Asian Outreach UK. Since 2000 Rajana has been owned and operated by Cambodians. Rajana Association is a member of the Artisans’ Association of Cambodia, which is itself a member of the International Fair Trade Association (IFTA).

Ten Thousand Villages buys jewelry and home decor from Rajana Association. Ten Thousand Villages has been purchasing from Rajana since 2007.

St. Elizabeth Seton Church FAIR TRADE CRAFT FAIR

Saturday, Nov. 23rd 9:00am-7:00pm Sunday, Nov. 24th 8:00am-2pm

Please join us in the downstairs church hall. Hospitality reception offering light refreshments, featuring Fair Trade

Coffees and Fair Trade candies, cookies and oil samples. Sponsored by the Seton Social Action Ministry.

AS WE ENTER THIS SEASON OF GIVING, let us remember that a gift can create new possibilities for those living in need. This Christmas, as we prepare for the coming of Christ, we can fulfill the hope of Christmas for our disadvantaged brothers and sisters by exchanging fair trade gifts. Your purchases will bring a renewed spirit of hope to the artisans who create them by helping the light of Advent shine in their daily lives. When you purchase one of the beautiful fair trade gifts, you are standing in solidarity with the artisans who created them, and helping them to live and work in dignity. Young women will have a brighter and better future. Children will be able to attend school and create their own future because of the added income fair trade brings to their families. The farmers of Kuapa co-own Divine Chocolate, and the premium they receive from their fair trade cocoa has allowed them to invest in things like schools and teachers for their children. Please prepare for your holidays prayerfully, give generously and shop responsibly to have a miraculous impact on those most in need. Fair Trade items provided by Ten Thousand Villages, one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade Organizations. All purchases will help to alle-viate poverty through trade rather than aid.

Last Monday, Oct. 28th, our 2014 Confirmandi were busy marking, sorting, and boxing all the jeans which they collected for their group Confirmation project (photo right and bottom left).

We want to thank everyone who partici- pated in the project by donating pairs of gently used jeans which were delivered to the Respond Now Organization to be used at their Christmas store to distribute to those in need in the far southwest suburbs.

As of Wednesday morning we have collected 1,191 pairs!

On Tuesday afternoon, two of the volunteers from Respond Now of Chicago Heights (photo bottom right, center) came by to pick up the 28 boxes of jeans. A big thanks to our maintenance men, Joe Shake (photo right below, on left) and Carlos Juarez (photo right below, on right) for helping to load the boxes into the truck.

Together we can do great things at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish!

*PLEASE REMEMBER: Each rosary is hand-made and therefore variations are to be expected. Every effort will be made to create your rosary in the color you select, but supplies are limited and we may be forced to substitute for another color. You will either be called or emailed when your rosary is ready.

(Drop your order forms in the St. Elizabeth Parish Office or give to Mrs. Linda McKeague at weekend Masses.)

A St. Elizabeth Seton parishioner who makes rosaries as a form of prayer, has offered to create hand-knotted rosaries as a Music Department fundraiser. As each knot is wrapped in the Franciscan tradition, the rosary maker will pray for you or your intentions. Because of the time involved, we have to limit the offer to the first 100 requests. These rosaries make great additions to “Mass intention” cards or greeting cards. They are virtually indestructible which makes them great to carry in your pocket or purse too!

November 3, 2013 THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page Twenty

Dear Parish Family, St. Elizabeth Seton’s Music Department has a 26-year history of providing quality music to the Southwest Suburbs and beyond. Our Sunday liturgies, special liturgies and services are enhanced by beautiful, spiritual, uplifting music provided by our talented volunteer

cantors, choirs and liturgical dancers. In addition, we have wonderful instrumentalists who travel to our parish from near and far to enhance many of these celebrations. Our two annual concerts are enhanced by a full orchestra. Seton’s music is a wonderful mixture of classic, contemporary and traditional music. Our first concert this season, Mary Did You Know? is on Sunday Dec. 8th at 3pm and will be a celebration of Mary, our faith, and Christmas. It will be followed by a Gala Fundraiser complete with a cocktail reception and raffles.

Our Music Department relies on donations, our Annual Gala Fundraiser and our yearly fundraiser at one of the local baseball parks to continue our tradition of enhancing our music with instrumentalists at our concerts and liturgies. Unfortunately, this year we were unable to appear at the baseball game and will be relying on donations and our Gala to fund our program. In order for the Seton Music Department to continue bringing inspirational and beautiful music of such high caliber to our communities and parish, we need your assistance. A Seton Music Program Sponsorship is a great way for your company or family to show your support for the continuation of presenting quality music to our communities. An ad book with your ad will be included in the program of each of our concerts this year. At each concert, we have an expected attendance numbering over 600 people. The following form details available ad size and cost. Most importantly, your gift will enable the St. Elizabeth Seton Music Department to continue their gift of music to the parish and community. God Bless you and thank you for considering becoming a Seton Music Sponsor. Linda McKeague St. Elizabeth Seton Director of Music 9300 West 167th Street, Orland Hills, IL 708-403-0101, ext. 112

SAINT OF THE WEEK

VENERABLE SOLANUS CASEY

(1870-1957)

BARNEY CASEY BECAME ONE OF DETROIT’S BEST-KNOWN PRIESTS EVEN THOUGH HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO PREACH FORMALLY OR TO HEAR CONFESSIONS! Barney came from a large family in Oak Grove, Wiscon-sin. At 21, after working as a logger, hospital orderly, streetcar operator and prison guard, he entered St. Fran-cis Seminary in Milwaukee—where he found the studies difficult. He left and in 1896, joined the Capuchins in Detroit, taking the name Solanus. His studies for the priesthood were again arduous. On July 24, 1904, he was ordained, but because his knowledge of theology was judged to be weak, he was not given permission to hear confessions or preach. A Franciscan Capuchin who knew him well said this an-noying restriction "brought forth in him a greatness and a holiness that might never have been realized in any other way." During his 14 years as porter and sacristan in Yonkers, New York, the people there recognized him as a fine speaker. "For, though he was forbidden to deliver doctrinal sermons," writes biographer, James Derum, "he could give deep inspirational talks with spiritual fire.” Father Solanus served at parishes in Manhattan and Harlem before returning to Detroit, where he was porter and sacristan for 20 years at St. Bonaventure Monastery. Every Wednesday afternoon he conducted well-attended services for the sick (150 to 200 people came daily to see Fr. Solanus in the front office. Most, to receive his bless-ing; 40 to 50 for consultation. Many considered him in-strumental in cures and other blessings they received. Father Solanus’ sense of God’s providence inspired many of his visitors. "Blessed be God in all his designs" was one of his favorite expressions. Many friends of Fr. Salunas helped the Capuchins begin a soup kitchen dur-ing the Depression (and still feed the poor there today). In 1946 in failing health, he transferred to the Capu-chin novitiate in Huntington, Indiana, where he lived until 1956 when he was hospitalized in Detroit. He died on July 31, 1957. Over 20,000 people passed by his coffin before his burial in St. Bonaventure Church in Detroit. At the funeral Mass, Fr. Gerald, the provincial, said: "His was a life of service and love for people like me and you. When he was not himself sick, he nevertheless suf-fered with and for you that were sick. When he was not physically hungry, he hungered with people like you. He had a divine love for people. He loved people for what he could do for them —and for God, through them." In 1960, a Father Solanus Guild was formed in Detroit, to aid Capuchin seminarians. By 1967 the guild had 5,000 members—many of them grateful recipients of his practical advice and his comforting assurance that God would not abandon them in their trials. He was declared Venerable in 1995.

ST. ELIZABETH SETON PARISH INFORMATION Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered on Saturday, between 4:15-4:45pm.

Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated twice monthly at 1pm. Reserve your time by calling the Pastoral Center early. We are limited to six children per Sunday.

Baptismal Couples preparing for the birth of their child should contact the Pastoral Center to register for a one night seminar, focusing on a parent’s role in his/her child’s faith development. This session is mandatory prior to the Baptism.

Anointing of the Sick is available in the Church every Monday after the 9am Mass. For those who are ill or facing hospitalization, it is appropriate to receive the sacrament once every six months. Please call the Pastoral Center for more information.

Ministry of Care is available to give Communion to the housebound, to visit and pray for hospitalized and/or to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Please call the Pastoral Center for assistance.

In the Hospital? Because of HIPAA Privacy regulations hospitals can no longer contact the parish regarding your hospitalization. It is the responsibility of you or a family member to notify our parish. We desire to offer whatever spiritual support we can. Please call the Pastoral Center.

Sacrament of Marriage Couples planning to marry are encouraged to make arrangements at least six months in advance.

Wedding Workshops are offered throughout the year. They provide engaged couples with guidelines and suggestions for the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. The workshop covers topics ranging from readings and music to flowers and video taping.

Adult Choir sings at all 10am Sunday Masses, as well as at a number of special liturgies.
