TO WHAT EXTENT WOULD A FATHER AND MOTHER GO TO PROTECT THE

LIFE OF THEIR CHILD? We know how far Saint Joseph went. An angel warning of Herod's plan to kill all the male children sent Joseph fleeing with his family in the middle of the night for Egypt with only a few bags of belongings and some food for the journey and some tools of the carpenter's trade in a sack. I can see Mary on the back of the donkey, working hard to keep baby Jesus quiet as they passed the border guards and became refugees. Home-less. Perhaps the gold, frankincense and myrrh giv-en by the Three Kings bought them shelter on the journey un l Joseph could find work. I can only im-agine what life was like for them. Working hard for basic necessi es. Moving constantly from place to place. Unrolling bedding to sleep on the floor at night. Their faith in God comforted and kept them together un l it was safe to return home. Today's migrants and refugees are mo vated by the same confidence and hope felt by Mary and Jo-seph. They long for safety and peace. They want a be er future, or simply to save their own lives. De-spite their hopes and expecta ons, they o en en-counter fear, mistrust, anger and rejec on. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we heard in today's readings that we are called to "put on hear elt com-passion and kindness..." (Colossians 3:12-21.) Through the intercession of the Holy Family, may the Lord give us the grace to see, and then help others to see, that migrants and refugees are broth-ers and sisters to be welcomed and loved, not feared. May our refugee and migrant families never again experience violence, rejec on and division. May all who have been hurt or marginalized find ready comfort and healing. Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

Puedo ver a María montada

The Promise of God’s Uncondi onal Love and Infinite Generosity

The church has always encouraged authen c and balanced forms of devo on that will help the faith-ful deepen their apprecia on of the Eucharist. The First Friday devo on is dedicated to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is associated with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque who was given the gi of an intense gracefilled prayer life. In her mys cal insights (visions), she was given messages to fight the heresy of Jansenism that drove people away from God with an emphasis in predes na on. The devo on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus empha-sizes the mercy and love of God. It encourages be-lievers to frequently receive communion. Through receiving the sacrament, people will come to expe-rience and know the uncondi onal love of God. On First Fridays, parishioners gather a er the Daily Mass and spend from 8:00-10:00 a.m. in Eu-charis c Adora on. People pray for themselves and the church to experience the mystery of receiving communion and par cipa ng in the sacramental encounter with Jesus. Please join the members of our parish in this very important part of the church’s devo onal life on Friday, January 2nd.

First Friday Devo on
