In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread throughout the world. While we battle the current pandemic, many of us have hearkened back 100 years to the 1918-1920 Influenza pandemic, which affected economies and lives in a similar way. During the 1918 pandemic, it was estimated that 500 million people—about a third of the world’s population—were infected, with 50 million dying of the disease.
Along with the anxiety, despair, and grief that accompanied the 1918 pandemic, there was one other noticeable development—a renewed interest in spiritualism. (Spiritualism can be briefly defined as a religion, science, and philosophy that believes in continuous life, based upon communication with those who live in the spirit world, as demonstrated through mediumship.) With so many children and young adults dying of the flu, survivors deeply wanted to know what happens when we die. This then became one of the “golden ages of mediums,” with dignitaries no less than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes) and noted physicist Sir Oliver Lodge sharing their conversations with their deceased sons and other family members. For those without the income or access to mediums, Ouija Boards became popular.
Now, a century later, our new pandemic is spreading disease and economic disruption. Will it lead to a renewed interest in what occurs when we die?
Certainly, compared to last century, there is far more research on the extraordinary experiences that persons have both as they are dying as well as those who struggle with bereavement—all of which fuel speculation about what happens when we die.
Lest readers think I am prone to mysticism, let me assure you that is hardly the case. My training is as a sociologist. Moreover, I am a Lutheran clergyman with very traditional beliefs about the afterlife. Yet, for 50 years, my focus both in academic research and counseling has been on the end-of-life. My research and practice have provided so much that I felt compelled to share my experiences in When We Die: Extraordinary Experiences at Life’s End.
Some of these experiences are quite familiar. For example, there are numerous accounts of Near-Death Experiences. First described by Dr. Raymond Moody (author of the New York Times bestselling Life After Life as well as Making Sense of Nonsense, Llewellyn, 2019) and Kenneth Ring, near-death experiences are out-of-body experiences of individuals close to death who recount being called back—often reluctantly— from a tunnel of light. These experiences are reported throughout the world, though there are interesting variations within different cultures.
Nearing-Death Awareness is another phenomenon that surrounds the end of life. Here, an individual close to death obliquely communicates the immediacy of their death. In some cases, it may be by communicating that they just saw or spoke to some now-deceased friend or relative. In other cases, they may speak about a trip they are about to take. For example, there is the story of a patient who, confined to her bed, announced that she had to get ready because she was going on a big trip;

she died shortly after dawn. Sometimes the person may simply sense the nearness of death. My father did that at the end of his life. Though he was in the final stages of cancer and in hospice care, he had seemed to stabilize. One morning he woke up and asked if he was dying. He certainly did not mean did he have a life-limiting illness; he clearly knew that. Yet, though there were no changes in his vital measures, he somehow sensed death. He died later that night.
There are also what a colleague, Louis LaGrand, termed Extraordinary Experiences. In these instances, after a death, the bereaved person experiences an encounter with the deceased. This, too, can happen in a number of ways. Sometimes someone struggling with grief simply feels the presence of their deceased loved one. In other cases, it is actually a sensory experience. They see, touch, hear, smell, or taste something associated with the deceased. One client shared that, while both living, he and his wife would walk most mornings at an indoor mall. On mornings when he chose to sleep instead of walking at the mall with his wife, his wife would return home, place in his mouth a dark chocolate nonpareil she had purchased at the mall, and say, “See what you missed.” After her death, he would wake with the taste of dark chocolate on his lips.
Other experiences might include something highly symbolic. LaGrand’s interest in the topic was piqued by a bereaved mother who shared that, on the way to see him, she stopped at the gravesite of her adolescent son. A hawk was perched on the memorial stone. It cocked its head a few times at the woman and slowly flew off. When asked why this seemed so significant, the mother replied that her son’s nickname was “Hawk.” In other cases, the bereaved may dream of the deceased or find reaffirmations of the deceased or messages in the words of others.
These extraordinary experiences are hardly unique. Research indicates that nearly two-thirds of bereaved persons report such encounters.
Naturally, there are many explanations for all of these events—among them neurological, psychological, and, of course, spiritual reasons. Yet, as we stare at the edge of forever, it is difficult to believe, or at least not to hope, that it is not a bottomless, lifeless abyss. These experiences perhaps promise or offer hope that, when we die, something still lives.

is a professor of counseling and a leading authority on issues involving death, dying, and grief. He has edited or written over 35 acclaimed books on death-related subjects, including Grief is a Journey (Atria, 2016). Additionally, Dr. Doka was president and chair of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement.
As a senior consultant and speaker for the Hospice Foundation of America, Dr. Doka gives approximately thirty lectures or keynote speeches a year to international audiences. About the Author
Alberto Villoldo has trained as a psychologist and medical anthropologist, and has studied the healing practices of the Amazon and the Andean shamans. Dr. Villoldo directs The Four Winds Society, where he trains individuals in the U.S. and Europe in the practice of shamanic energy medicine. He is the founder of the Light Body School, which has campuses in New York, California, Miami, and Germany. He directs the Center for Energy Medicine in Chile, where he investigates and practices the neuroscience of enlightenment. Life is sound and sound brings life to the earth. Sound maintains the existence of all beings. Sound is the key to the miracle of life.
From mankind’s earliest time, and through recorded history, there are references to sound healing. Sound healing temples were constructed to capture the power of sound and light waves. People would travel to these locations for a resonant recalibration of body, mind, and spirit. Ancient civilizations recognized that the most effective and simple means of balancing the body is through the use of sound. Sound has been used to heal, support, center, empower, and to expand consciousness, then and now.
Sound is the vibrational energy moving through matter. Vibrations vary through a wide range of frequencies. The lowest sound can only be felt in our bodies, the higher sounds can be heard by our ears and the highest frequencies can no longer be heard or felt but are still detected by our energy body. We are aware of most of these frequencies but the effects of these vibrations of sound travel well beyond what we can detect with our ears.
If our perception of sound would be unrestricted, we would be able to hear the music of the flowers, grasses, trees, and mountains; the singing of the skies and stars and the rhythm of all of nature and the symphony of our own being. Every being has its own mel-ody. If our sound spectrum were to be enhanced, we could under-stand how all the particles in nature and the universe are made up of musical structures, frequencies and patterns which our bodies recognize as healing information and etheric nourishment.
Everything, the planet, our bodies, plants and rocks vibrate. Abso-lutely everything is a waveform. The proof that sound affects mat-ter can be simply shown by putting sand on the face of a drum and by sounding the drum, the granules of sand will take on various geometric patterns. Sound moves matter and the sound vibration causes change in molecular structure. Sound has the potential to change our bodies, thus offering healing.
Dorothy Rettalack, who wrote The Sound of Music and Plants, was curious about the effects of sound on plant life. She subjected her plants to a local radio station playing rock and the plants leaned away from the music source; the root structures were shallow and also growing away from the sound; and the petunias never flow-ered. She then subjected her plants to classical and religious music and the plants wrapped themselves around the music source, grew wonderfully and the flowers bloomed prolifically. Our bodies can detect the vibration of sound even though our ears cannot hear it. Peo-ple are amazed at how simple and yet how effective sound healing can be. The most wonderful part about sound therapy and other vibrational therapies is that we do not need to fully understand them to enjoy the impact they have on the state of our exis-tence.
Everything in the universe vibrates and has a sine wave. Vibrational remedies that support the body’s vibration include thought, light, color, and sound. Other vibration-al remedies come from plants and minerals. The healing frequencies from the plant kingdom are homeopathy, flower essences, aromatherapy, herbs and food. The healing frequencies from the mineral kingdom are crystals, gems, ores, metals, and essences made from these vibrations.
If our energy is blocked in some way and we do not have the full spectrum of frequency in our energy field, offering the body various vibrations allows the body to pick up the vibration it needs to support the overall resonance of the body. The body’s innate intel-ligence knows what it needs and integrates the missing frequency into the energy field. This is the beauty of using vibrational remedies; as the body only chooses what it needs.
In 1998 I become interested in sound healing and experienced its profound impact on the body and soul. I wanted everyone to have an understanding of the vital importance of vibrational remedies, featuring sound. This is why I wrote The Essence of Sound, a textual tapestry of well-woven knowledge. The book is a collection of healing vibrations outlined with reference to the Meridians, Chakras and the Auric Field. It includes pri-mordial insights such as how the half notes support the energy system of the chakras. Little or no special training or experience is needed; only an interest and willingness by the healing practitioner. But The Essence of Sound is also for the lay person. W hat a difference a year can make. Last year was perhaps our busiest ever and this year like many people, we are just staying home. Dean Evenson and I are in the unusual situation of living how we usually do. We stopped traveling, doing shows, and visiting stores a few years ago, but as much as we miss being in the midst of the magic and meeting so many
wonderful people face to face, we don’t miss getting on airplanes and we’re happy to be home surrounded by gardens in a forested valley by a wild river. Fortunately, much of what we did last year was in preparation for this year’s new releases.
In June of this year, Soundings of the Planet released Healing Resonance, a wonderful collaboration with Dean Evenson, Scott Huckabay, and Phil Heaven. Drawing on their decades of friendship and award-winning collaborations, these musicians create a tonal journey that is both meditative and uplifting. Adding to the guitar harmonics, flowing flutes, and evocative viola melodies, this mesmerizing album introduces a new instrument to the Soundings repertoire called the Handpan. This melodic steel percussion instrument adds a unique timbre, flavoring the music with a lingering resonance giving space for overtones to flourish. According to many, the handpan is leading the next generation of sound healing and musical soundscapes.
In the summer of 2019, we welcomed to the Pacific Northwest, Indian sitar master Deobrat Mishra and his tabla playing nephew Prashant Mishra for a handful of concerts and recording sessions. Deobrat lives in the holy city of Varanasi (also known as Benares) on the sacred Ganges River in India. His music has deep roots in ancient Indian traditions and he represents the 11th generation of the Benares Gharana vocal lineage. We are excited about the upcoming album Yoga Mantra featuring the remarkable voice of Deobrat singing and playing sitar on the Gayatri Mantra and other devotional chants. Dean adds his silver flute and Prashant drives the rhythms on tabla. Our friendship with the Mishras goes back many years when we first produced concerts in the Pacific Northwest with Deobrat and his father Pandit Shivnath Mishra and produced the album Raga Cycle featuring father-son dueling sitars! In recent years, Deobrat has been performing and teaching worldwide with his nephew Prashant Mishra who is one of the best tabla players we have ever heard. They perform in the US, Canada, Europe, and of course India. In a time when yoga music and mantra have become so popular, it is refreshing to hear authentic Indian musicians performing their traditional music the way it was intended.
Another highlight of last year was our journey of a lifetime when Dean Evenson and I traveled to Paris and then to Giverny, France where we immersed ourselves in the beauty of the flower and water gardens of Impressionist Master Claude Monet. We spent a week focusing on recording both audio and video in and around the magnificent gardens. We are excited to be releasing Monet’s Garden in early 2021, a beautiful album that was inspired by that experience. The album features flute, harp, singing bowls and nature sounds in the gentle flow that has become our trademark. staying in the village where Monet lived gave us even deeper insights into why he painted the way he did, capturing the light and mood of the glorious natural world surrounding him.
In addition, we are excited to be releasing our second book A Year of Guid-ed Meditations: 52 Weekly Meditations. Each affirmation is complimented with contemplative photography and additional background information. The book is designed so people can begin their year any time and focus on a new affirmation every week. Or they can open the book randomly and focus on the affirmation they turn to, like drawing a soul card. In addition to the longer affirmation for each week, there is a short phrase that can be memorized and repeated often. This collection of affirmations is based on the values and principles that Dean Evenson and I have lived by for over half a century! We see them as universal laws of nature, and we feel that living by these principles has contributed to our meaningful life – both in terms of our long and loving relationship, and in regard to running our successful music business Soundings of the Planet. These profound-ly positive principles are based on practical wisdom and universal spirituality.
In case you missed it, last year we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Soundings of the Planet with a Gala Concert complete with dancers, archival video projections, and many of the wonderful musicians we have collaborated with over the past four decades. It was a phenomenal multi-media event. To celebrate, we released the album Peace Through Music 40th Anniversary Collection. The 20 tracks are collaborations with Dean and Scott Huckabay, d’Rachael, Tom Barabas, Jonathan Kramer, Peter Ali, Deobrat Mishra, Phil Heaven, Burke Mulvany, Jeff Willson and many more Soundings artists.
On another note, we kicked off 2020 by launching our new YouTube channel Soundings Mindful Media, The first video we posted was a 1976 Ram Dass lec-ture from our vast video archives. We invite people to visit our channel and watch a fascinating array of archival and new videos on a range of topics: Hopi Prophecy, San Francisco Oil Spill 1971, the first United Nations Conference on Human Environment in Stockholm, 1972, Richie Havens performing Freedom 1973, Steven Gaskin Farm 1975, etc. Our webinar from this year’s Shift Net-work Sound Healing Summit is also viewable. To understand more of our video and audio roots, you can watch ‘The Story of Soundings of the Planet‘ which is a fun video orated by the life size puppet, Orauck Dickinson, who happens to be our son, Elijah Evenson. It tells of our adventures beginning in the 1970s when we bought our first Sony Portapack portable video camera. The video includes footage from our decade of living in a converted school bus, Rainbow Gatherings, Native American culture, yogis, healers, and even the Dalai Lama and Tibet. For us, this time marked the beginning of a powerful consciousness movement which has propelled us all into this future.
