July has been all about celebrating new additions and existing traditions. New doctors have been joining our institution and have been adding value to our healthcare team. Given the amicable atmosphere here in our hospital, I am sure that
you will all help me welcome and make them feel at home.
We have also celebrated the 2019 Nurses Week earlier in July and I would like to congratulate each one of our nurses for a job well done. Do know that we appreciate the contributions you have done for MDH and its patients. Happy Nurses Week!In line with the celebrations that we had in our hospital, this issue also features one of the five pillars of Islam, the annual Hajj. This time of the year is an opportunity to start a fresh or new life with deepened faith. We wish our MDH Family a happy Eid. May Allah fill your lives with happiness, your hearts with love and your minds with wisdom. Eid Mubarak!

HOW TO PHYSICALLY PREPARE FOR HAJJ
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a religious pilgrimage to Mecca for Muslims across the globe. This is a journey of a lifetime and all Muslims who are eligible to make the pilgrimage are required to do so at least once in their lives.
Since Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people, the importance of early and adequate preparation cannot be over-emphasized for the Pilgrimage to be fulfilling and meaningful.

It’s this time of the year again where we highlight the stars of May and they are none other than the heart and soul of healthcare, NURSES.
With the Team, NURSES: A VOICE TO LEAD, the team, Frances Irene Quino (DON), Rechil Gardose (Nursing Supervisor), Renelen Rivera (Nursing Educator), Molly Thomas (Nursing Supervisor), Ana Diaz (NQM Coordinator), Kory Ayson (Staff Nurse) and Jamielyn Cainto (Staff Nurse) collaborated with various departments such as Quality Management and Patient Safety Department, Infection Control Department and Safety Department to facilitate the event.
It was a one-day celebration where we exhibited not only knowledge and skills but stealth and speed, we pushed through with the second MDH NURSE OLYMPIAD where we showcased various obstacles, challenges, tests and clues that would guide our contestants for the win. Pairs from two nursing units were formed and competed:1. ER and ICU - Peejay Atchicoso, Ligin Tharackan
and Abubaker2. OPD and Dialysis – Tagwa3. Surgical and OR - Judie del Mundo, 4. Medical and Pediatric - Cathylyn Aniban and Berna
Balquiedra5. Ob-Gyne and Nursery/NICU - Nina Ricci Relado
and Makarem Adlan
The exhausting, sweat-driven and mind-bugling activity not only made our contestants’ pulses raised but our spectators who followed them from start to finish the greatest olympians conquered the scene, and PEEJAY ATCHICOSO, LIGIN THARACKAN AND ABUBAKER immersed as the MDH NURSE OLYMPIAD CHAMPIONS!
The night thereafter was the Nurses Gala where we renewed our pledges as nurses and we recognized brilliance and excellence of our nurses throughout the years.
We were honored to have Dr. Mohammad Fahim Siddiqui and Dr. Zuhair Kayyali to speak before us and how we are loved and appreciated by our doctors. We
got to have our CEO, Dr. Suliman Dafalla Babiker give us words of inspiration.
That night, we exhibited the families, friends, sisters and brothers that left us but made an imprint to each and every one of us. We recognized the genius and the prowess of our cream of the crop, the Nurses of the Year from 2009 to present. We welcomed our new ADON, Miss Tagwa Esmail and moreover, we awarded Miss Grace Pagtulingan as the Topnotcher in the 2018 Nursing Annual Exam and Miss Nina Ricci Relado as the Nurse of the Year 2018.The night ended with a sumptuous feast that was sponsored by our Nursing Administration and Hospital Management, especially with Miss Manal Ghandour coordinating our needs.
Truly the essence of this celebration is to see beyond the everyday difficulties and challenges our profession faces. The core of what truly nursing is, is embedded in our soul, and that, in every care we do, we become heroes, Nurse Heroes.
Again, Happy Nurses Week!

How To PhysicallyPrepare For Hajj
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a religious pilgrimage to Mecca for
Muslims across the globe. This is a journey of a lifetime and all Muslims who
are eligible to make the pilgrimage are required to do so at least once in their
lives.
Since Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people, the importance of
early and adequate preparation cannot be over-emphasized for the Pilgrimage
to be fulfilling and meaningful.
The journey of Hajj involves a great deal of physical activities. Therefore, one
must prepare one’s body for these challenges.
1. Develop a habit of walking at least one month prior to your departure
for Hajj. Start with walking for 30 minutes daily, and then gradually
increase the time period.
2. Practice a few body exercises daily, specially focusing on your
lower abdomen. You can do squats, crunches, cycling, swimming, etc.
to strengthen your muscles for the great amount of physical activity ahead.
3. Pilgrims have to face intense climate, harsh weather along with these
exertions. So it is always better to adapt a healthy and simple lifestyle (if
you›re not used to one!). Include a greater portion of fruits and vegetables in
your diet to get the essential nutrients and ensure adequate fluid intake.
4. Get all your medical tests done before you depart for Hajj. Certain vaccinations
are required to be done and an overall medical check-up is necessary. If you
get approved as medically fit, you are ready for this journey, but still, never
forget to keep along basic medicines and a first aid kit.
WAYS TO PREVENTHEAT STROKE ....Summer has finally arrived, bringing sun, heat, and
plenty of ideas for outdoor activities. But don’t forget that
exposure to heat can have negative consequences, such
as heat exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are heat-related health
conditions that may be serious and life threatening if not
treated adequately and promptly. And with the increasing
temperature and sweltering weather in the Kingdom
these summer months, heat illnesses become a growing
concern and pose a great health risk to all of us.
Here are some pieces of advice to avoid heatstroke while
enjoying everything that summer has to offer!
1. Limit your exposure to heat and sun.During a heat wave, stay out of the sun and the heat
during the hottest hours of the day, between 10 a.m. and
3 p.m. Find cool or air-conditioned areas like shopping
centres or shady parks.
2. Stay hydrated.Drink about two litres of fluids per day. Choose water or
fresh fruit juices, and avoid beverages containing caffeine
because they increase the risk of dehydration.
3. Dress appropriately.Wear pale-coloured, comfortable, lightweight clothing (for
example, made of cotton or linen) that let air circulate
around your body. Also, always use a high SPF sunscreen
and wear hats and sunglasses while outdoors.
4. Keep your home and workplace cool.Close the curtains during the day to keep out the heat and
use a fan to keep the air circulating and, if you can, turn
on the air conditioner.
5. Don’t overexert yourself.Avoid working out or exercising intensely when
temperatures are high. Also, limit your physical exertion
during the hottest hours of the day. If you can’t avoid it,
drink lots of water to prevent dehydration.
6. Pay special attention to at-risk people.Children and the elderly are more prone to heatstroke
since their bodies do not manage temperature variations
as effectively. Give them something to drink often and
keep them in a cool place. Never expose babies to the
sun or heat for long periods and make sure to never leave
your child alone in a car that’s parked in the sun. Also
keep in mind that certain health problems such as obesity,
hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
render people more vulnerable to heatstroke and require
particular attention.
