Little Soldier learns of big history

By: Samantha Johnson

Family lineage is important for many; this is refl ected in the hundreds of family history search sites. Karsen Little Soldier, 2009 Beulah High School graduate, used search sites for an assignment for her Western Civilization II class at Bismarck State College. Little Soldier’s assignment was to look up the origins of her last name Little Soldier. “I googled my last name because I already knew that my great-great grandfather had been in the Battle of Little Bighorn and is credited on a plaque at

Miner IncidentsThe

The Miner Incidents is published six times a year by the Journalism Department. It is published by and for the students of Beulah High School amd does not necessarily represent the views of the administration. The Miner Incidents accepts signed letters to the editor, reserving the right to edit them for grammar and profanity. The Miner Incidents also accepts student work (writing and artwork) for publication. Students need not be on the staff of the newspaper to submit their work. Submissions may be given to Mrs. Heller.

The gym is where various groups hold pep rallies to boost school spirit and student involvement. During these activities, a fair amount of the student body sits on the bleachers, lifeless, wishing they were someplace else. Recently, The Miner Incidents received an unsigned letter to the editor. This individual was complaining how the same people are always involved in pep rallies. Our policy is not to print anonymous submissions, but the topic of this harsh letter needs addressing. Any group of students leading the rally will naturally lean toward choosing the students they knew will participate. These kids have volunteered themselves in the past. Some refer to these as the “popular” kids. But think, “popular” kids are considered “popular” because they have chosen to get

themselves involved with school activities in the past, present, and probably the future. This get-involved attitude will carry over into their lives when they leave high school. These will be the volunteer fi remen in the community, the sandbaggers, and so many other areas where people willingly help. When the day comes to get jobs, bosses are not going to hire people who sit motionless during the interview. Employers will be looking for those who offer conversation and have involved themselves with activities in their youth. Will the interviewees blame their school peers when they have nothing to write on their resume’ for student activities? It is not the student body’s fault when individuals un-involve themselves during high school years. Employers will defi nitely not hand out raises to uninvolved and inactive workers.

They are going to give the raise to the people who deserve it. These will be the people who take on more responsibility around the offi ce, show their capability and willingness to work, and initiative in the daily tasks they are given. The chosen students have probably chosen to be people- friendly and active in their school, starting with a club, organization, or sport. Individuals must take the incentive to be involved; they cannot expect to be begged for participation. Sports are a great way to stay in shape, travel and make friends; but if sports are not for everybody. There are so many more great opportunities like the FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, close-up, peer youth, drama, speech, student council, ext. Give the tush a push and get involved!

Dear Editor I am Trey Horning, a freshman in this amazing high school. I have had a great school year so far. I enjoy the food here very much. It is delicious! The breakfast gives you a good choice of what to eat early in the morning so if I end up coming sooner than I wanted, I can at least enjoy a good breakfast before I start my long day. The other students here are amazing cool and hip. I would say I am friends with about all of them. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores are all great. The classes I am taking this year have taught me a lot such as art, physical science, ag/tech, algebra, English, and history. All the teachers are great at answering quetsions I might have, even if they’re not pertaining to that class or any class at all. The athletics here are great (football and wrestling I prefer) and the clubs too. There isn’t a sport or a club you would join and not like. The coaches are tough yet fun. Only thing that stinks is that the lockers rooms actually get stinky. The pep rallies are one of the things I look forward to when I hear about them. Also winter games that the school participated in were amazingly fun even though the freshmen got our butts kicked in about every competition. This is probably one of the best years I will have in this school.Yours truly, Trey Horning

Golf gets into full-swingBy: Jordon Mann

The Miners girls golf team travels to Hazen on April 13. If weather permits, this will be the date of the fi rst meet. “It’s always fun to go to Hazen and golf. I like their course, and it isn’t too long of a bus ride,” junior Rebecca Alt said. Mickal Sayler scored a 105 over 18 holes, while Alt scored a 97 as her best score in Hazen. “It seems like I always golf better at Hazen and Beulah. I know the courses better, and am able to perform well,” senior Mickal Sayler said. The Miners return fi ve varsity golfers: Rebecca Alt, Shelby Lunde, Jodi Boe, Alyssa Bauer, and Mickal Sayler. This year’s only returning senior, Mickal Sayler has been in golf since her freshman year. She knows what it takes to succeed. “Mickal is a great team leader. She is a mentor that the younger girls can look up to,” coach Craig Becker said. The Miner girls golf team placed second last year at the regional tournament. They

fell only a few strokes short of beating the rival Hazen Bison. “We hope to beat Hazen this year. They are our toughest competition that we face. We have the core of experienced golfers to do it,” Becker said. After fi nishing top three in the region, the Miners were off to state. Becca Alt was the team’s outstanding golfer at the state tournament. She fi nished the fi rst day with

only 90 strokes over eighteen holes, with a hole in one included. “Placing 22nd at state was a great experience, and I hope to do better this year and fi nish in the top ten,” Becca Alt said. The Miners are a relatively young team with a substantial amount of talent. If everyone keeps working as hard as they have in the past, the team will be good for many years to come. “I am very pleased with the group of girls that I get to work with. They try hard every day, and do their best. I hope for another exciting year this year and for the next few years with these girls,” Becker said.

Miner track team starts season strong at Mary By: Brandon Renner The Beulah Miners track team will compete in their fi rst outdoor meet on April 6 in Minot. Both Denver Unruh and Clinton Senn agree that the boys team is fi lled with quality athletes but is few in numbers. “A top goal [for the team] is to come out on top in the team scores and beat Trinity,” said senior long distance runner Clinton Senn. The girl’s team has the exact opposite problem. “We have the strength of having high numbers although our weakness is that

we’re young,” said junior thrower Taryn Zacher. They have been practicing hard since March 2 and have competed at several indoor meets in hope of gaining the much needed experience needed to do well at the end of the season. Their fi rst indoor meet took place at the University of Mary on March 22. “The meet was a success for the team overall. The girls team looks pretty strong,” said junior Brooke Renner. The success of the team was due to the success of several individual athletes who brought home fi rst place fi nishes. Brooke Renner took fi rst place in shot put with a

No. 3 ranked Dickinson Trinity Titans on a last second buzzer beater shot by Denver Unruh for a 66-64 victory. This win was a tremendous confi dence boost and led to Beulah becoming the District 14 champions. The Beulah Miners had not beaten the Dickinson Trinity Titans in boys basketball since 1996, when they won by a whopping 53 points. The following year, Beulah lost to Trinity on its state tournament run. That loss was one of the two losses that the 1997 team had all year. The fi rst game of the Region 7 tournament for the Beulah Miners was against the Mott-Regent Wildfi re. This nail-biter was won by clutch free throws at the end. The Miners beat the Wildfi re 56-54. In the second game of regionals, the Miners played the Beach Buccaneers. The Miners kept their momentum from the night before for a clutch 73-62 victory and a spot in the championship. The fi nal game of the tournament was against the Dickinson Trinity Titans. The fl oor shook as the Miners stepped on the

court. They came out ready but slowed as the halftime approached trailing 19-32. After halftime, the Miners emerged to bring the Titans lead down to 2 coming into the fourth quarter. Finally with 5:35 left in the game, the Miners stole the lead to put themselves up 41-40. As the fi nal minutes fi nished up the Miners found themselves down 51-50 with 11 seconds left. Then after a strategized timeout, Casey Duppong made the game winning jump shot to send the Miners into 2010 North Dakota Class B Basketball Tournament. “During both games I just kept calm, for some reason I knew we were going to win both games against Trinity, “senior Kasey Schmidt said. The Miners came out of the season with many awards including District 14 Coach of the Year Jeremy Brandt and All-State Tournament and All-District player Kasey Schmidt. Denver Unruh and Casey Duppong also received All-Region and All-District honors. Dustin Rueb also received All-District honors. The Miners wrapped a phenomenal season with their state tournament appearance after getting a new coach just one year ago.

throw of 31 feet 8 inches. Clinton Senn took home the win in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:11.87. Kelsey Kraft won several events. She fi nished number one in high jump with a jump of 5 feet, 3 inches, the 400 meter dash with a time of 64.8, and was a member of the 1600 meter relay team that won with a time of 4:40.25. Other members of the relay team included Brenna Johansen, Kylie Flemmer, and Kaitlyn Grad. Head coach Todd Kaylor has high expectations for this year’s team. “I am very proud of our kids [after competing in their fi rst meet], they competed really hard,” said Kaylor. “[The

team] is pretty young but if they all work hard and stay focused they all will get better.” Many athletes have their hopes set high for this season. Zacher has the goal to improve upon her distances from last season. Unruh hopes to qualify for state again but this time he hopes to place in the top eight. Previously, Unruh qualifi ed for state in the 800m run. While many athletes are in track in order to compete, some have other reasons for joining. “I fi gured it was my last year (to join track) and I hope to have fun this year,” senior Jamie Schaeffer said.

Meet a Mighty Miner

Seniors’ bittersweet farewell to sports

By: Brenna Johansen

The feeling never quite sinks in. It hovers around as a silent reminder of what was and what could’ve been. Unannounced and uninvited, the “what ifs” creep in. For senior athletes, the end of a season can bring one of two things. The fi rst is a feeling of relief that all the stress and work is over. An “it was fun while it lasted” kind of feeling. The second is a more somber emotion that appears as a “post-season depression.” For me, I feel a little bit of both. When volleyball ended, I told myself I wouldn’t cry because crying is for wimps. However much to my surprise, I couldn’t fi ght back the tears as I thanked my team for a great season. I know, who cries after a game right? I said I wouldn’t cry in basketball either, but guess what? I did. I’ve heard people say “you’ve don’t know what you got until it’s gone,” and they are right. During the season, my teammates become somewhat of a family to me

because we spend hours upon hours every week together. When it ends and a new sport season begins, I fi nd it sad that I am not able to see all my teammates everyday as some don’t play the next sport I do. Being a senior, my year has been full of “lasts.” My last fi rst day of school, last homecoming and snowball, even my last Student Council convention. Some of the saddest for me however have been my last home game for volleyball and basketball, the last time wearing my jerseys, and the last time with my team. Sports have been a huge part of my high school years. I remember being a little freshman thinking how I couldn’t wait to be a senior. Now I wish it hadn’t happened so fast. Lucky for me, I have been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to play college volleyball. I’m glad I have the chance to keep playing. Even though I still have track this spring, I can’t help but be sad when reminded of the sports seasons I’ve been a part of. I have enjoyed playing each one and I will miss everyone and everything associated with them.

By: Jordon MannTrack After returning to track after missing last year, Denver Unruh will once again compete in the 800m and 1600m runs, along with the 1600m and 3200m relays. “It’s always nice when a returning state qualifi er comes out for the team, and Denver is a great athlete,” Todd Kaylor said.

Miner Incidents: Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack?Denver Unruh: Because it is not working properly.

MI: Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?DU: Because they can’t resist to actually see for themselves.

MI: Why are people so scared of mice, which are much smaller than us, but no one seems to be scared of Mickey Mouse, who is bigger than us?DU: Well I’m scared of Mickey Mouse.

Baseball Three years of varsity experience have helped senior Lucas Senske become the high caliber baseball player he is today. Lucas plays in the infi eld and pitches for the Miners. “No matter what happens, we always fi nd a way to make baseball fun,” Senske said.

MI: Why is it that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you; but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?LS: My dogs love when I blow on their faces because my breath smells like food.

MI: Why does the Easter bunny carry eggs? Rabbits don’t lay eggs.LS: Because rabbits are fi lthy thieves.

MI: Why do banks charge a non-suffi cient funds fee when they already know there’s not enough money in your account?LS: To try to take even more money than you have. Banks love to make you have even less money.

Girls Golf

Sophomore Shelby Lunde hopes for another successful year of golf. Last year Shelby was only a few strokes from qualifying for state. “Shelby is a smart golfer. She knows where she wants to be,” coach Craig Becker said.

MI: Why is “phonics” not spelled the way it sounds?SL: Because the English language loves to make everything complicated.

MI: Why is Charlie short for Charles if they are both the same number of letters?SL: It’s easier to say, and is not as formal as Charles.

MI: Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?SL: I don’t know but I do that all the time.

BHS boys golf to tee off By: Shelby Schields The Beulah Miners began golf practice March 29 at the Black Sands Golf Course. They start competition on April 15 at the Heart River Golf Course. “Heart River is very open and straight. I hope to golf in the 80s and place in the top ten,” third year varsity golfer Frank Smith said. Smith golfed an 83 at Heart River last year which was also their fi rst meet of the year. The team fi nished 5th of 14 teams last year. In the past couple of years, the spring weather hasn’t been cooperative. Snow, wind, and rain have been major issues. “It was so cold last year, we needed hats and mittens to fi nish the [Heart River] course,” second year varsity golfer Lucas Schnaidt said. Schnaidt shot a 92 last year at Heart River. He’s a unique golfer because he uses women’s clubs because they’re lighter.

One of the most diffi cult courses the Miners have to face is Bully Pulpit in Medora. “My favorite course is Bully Pulpit. The scenery is beautiful and the wildlife is exceptionally captivating. This is also the hardest course we play on because the greens are elevated and you need to hit the fairway,” Smith said. The Beulah Miners seem optimistic about the upcoming season. “Although we lost Josh Schank and Jared Seibel, our one and two golfers from last year, I think if we work hard and stay focused, we’ll have a good shot of making it to state,” Zach Morris said. Morris shot an 84 in Medora his freshman year which was his personal best. BHS has some new and upcoming talent including Noah Iverson who shot a 79 on Dickinson’s 18 hole course. “We’ve got six solid freshman golfers and I think we’re going to do very well this season,” second year varsity golfer Noah Iverson said.

Baseball team hits indoors

By: Jaydin Mann

All the snowfall has forced the baseball team to practice indoors for the second straight year. If weather permits, the Miners fi rst game will be in Dickinson against the Midgets on Tuesday, April 6. “[The weather] is going to push our season back. A bunch of games will be rescheduled, so later in the year we will have a lot of games back-to-back,” catcher/fi rst baseman Keanon Serna said. The Miners fi rst game against the Midgets is going to be a feeling game to fi gure out where everyone’s going to play and where they are most comfortable. “The Midgets are going to be fundamentally sound and they will try to

put up ten runs on the Miners because they are mean men,” Serna said. This year’s baseball team returns eight seniors; six from Beulah and two from Hazen. Only seven have seen varsity action. One of the struggles the Miners will face is pitching because they will have games right after another. “We don’t have a strong pitching staff; so the people that are strong pitchers will have to throw a lot of innings,” outfi elder/pitcher Logan Kessler said. Without a strong pitching staff, the Miners will have to play to the best of their abilities all the time. “We need to play complete games. In past years we let things slip away in later innings. We need to believe that we can win,” infi elder/pitcher Lucas Senske said.

Have fun, make smart decisionsBy: Josey Erickson

Today’s young people have been exposed to lots of information about drugs, alcohol, tobacco and sex. If we have heard it once we have heard it a million times. Most of us just get sick of it or at least I do. It is great people want us to be aware of the consequences that will follow us if we participate in those harmful activities such as lung cancer, mouth cancer, alcoholism, death, or even worse a kid. When people say not to do something it lights a fi re inside some of us. It makes us want to do it in spite of being told not to. I am like that in a lot of situations. Now I try to think about things in the following context before I do something: Is this something I would be proud to tell my grandma? Or someone you would want to have respect towards you. I am not perfect; there are a lot of things I wouldn’t want to tell my grandma and would like to take back. So I often change my way of going about doing things. College is coming around the corner, and everybody is excited for that! I know

I am. But back to reality we have to be responsible with this new found freedom. We don’t want to go make fools of ourselves and wish we could take back our un-thought-out actions. Here’s some cowboy wisdom to think about. “Live a good honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.” I know I can have fun while still having control over myself, do you? I don’t need to go out some night and parade around the streets of some town in my birthday suit or something else completely outrageous. We need to use our heads while at the same time using common sense. Just around the corner is the real world, which won’t be easy. We will no longer be babied along like during high school, and our parents won’t be there to make decisions for us anymore. It is up to us to decide what kind of people we want to be someday. Do things because it is the right thing to do, not because everyone else is. I want to look back and be happy with the way I have lived my life, I believe anybody would think the same.

By: Logan Dschaak Technology Education (Tech Ed.) is one of the best classes offered by the Beulah School system. It offers a wide range of learning opportunities in how to use Adobe Photoshop, HTML Code, and Movie Maker. It also is a very exciting and enjoyable class. This class is taught by Deb Schields. The class is offered to juniors and seniors. Although some students don’t know about it. This class helps students in the long run because the world is changing to be more computer orientated. Students fi rst learn to use Adobe Photoshop, which is a photo editing program. In this program students can change just about anything they want in a photo. They can put a head of a lion on the body of a sheep or even make a color black and white. The projects the students get to do range from making a nature scene to making a collage of the student’s life. In Tech Ed students learn how to use Windows Movie to change and edit videos. Students make a video all about their lives and all their classes. The students carry around a camera, fi lming everything they do in their normal lives. Students like Cotlyn Anderson made a hilarious video of all the fun and exciting things he does at school.

One other project students do is to make a fi ve-minute movie. They wrote their own movie scripts and fi lm all of their own footage. After fi lming they edit their sound and footage. This gives students a chance to be creative and use their imaginations. “It was fun to take a camera around and fi lm all the stuff we do in our lives,” senior Keely Hatzenbuhler said. Students work with the HTML (HyperText Markup Language) code, which is a way to build a Web page. It involves a lot of typing and remembering because it has a lot of codes and special combinations. This introduces them to a style of code called JAVA Script, which is an advanced style of HTML code. This is one of the ways a lot of Web sites are made. Students really enjoy this class, because they get to express themselves in their work. Also students usually don’t ever get homework. “My favorite part of Tech Ed. is every day when the bell rings and we all groan because we don’t want our Photoshop experience to be over,” senior Nicole Heller said. The class is only offered for half a year, but it is defi nitely worth it. Beulah High School requires students to have one full technology credit to graduate. Technology Education is a fun and educational way to get half of the technology credit out of the way.

Every girl who has ever attended prom knows the struggles involved in the quest for the perfect dress. First of all, girls must take into consideration what kind of style will get them noticed in a positive light: just the right color, and just the right style. Many of us spend hours in bridal shops and prom dress stores trying on hundreds of thousands of dresses. Okay, maybe ten to twenty. Sometimes a lot of the dresses look way better on the hangers than they do on me. If I’m lucky one of them will work the other way around and look better on me instead of the hanger. After I’m done trying on all of these dresses, I fi nally fi nd “the one.” Only then do I look at the price. $500. That is way out of my price range, so that just means I have to start all over again. I go through the racks like my dad goes through the TV channels until I fi nd something that interests me. After purchasing the perfect dress, I have to buy garters, pick out matching fl owers, and buy hair accessories and jewelry. It all adds up to be quite a bill.

Picking out prom attire isn’t limited to girls. Guys like to dress up too—even though they would never admit it. My prom date asks me to tag along to the fl ower shop and help him pick out his tuxedo and fl owers. I have never really had any objection to this—I like picking out fl owers. Once all of the fl ower and tux arrangements have been made, it’s time to think about where to eat (Grandview, Subway, good old Country Kettle or mom’s kitchen), what vehicle to drive (his or mine), and plans for after prom. Post prom is a great option. Post Prom is after prom and involves lots of free prizes and various activities. I don’t know why anybody wouldn’t want to go with all of the great free stuff. Everyone goes home a winner. Prom is a really fun time to get dressed up and enjoy yourself and your fellow classmates. Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera! Buying a dress: $0-1,000. Garters: $10. Flowers: $30. Prom tickets per couple: $20. Tuxedo: $150. Getting to spend an unforgettable night with classmates and friends dancing the night away: priceless.

By: Ruby Aipperspach

Prom’s just around the corner and our theme is “A Time in Wonderland,” based on the recent Johnny Depp movie “Alice in Wonderland.” I love going to school dances, but prom, on April 10 is the worst when it comes to dancing “etiquette.” I believe our student body has a different defi nition of dancing. The dictionary defi nition of dancing is “to move one’s feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps, esp. to the accompaniment of music.”(dictionary.com,3/5/10) What happens at our dances wouldn’t necessarily be considered dancing. “Grinding,” as we call it, is not a form of dance, at least in my opinion. I love seeing people actually dance, as in waltzing, two stepping, and swing dancing. I remember last year at prom when Stephanie Scherer and Nolan Weisz started to swing dance, everyone formed a circle and watched in awe at how amazing they were. Think of how awesome it would look if more than just one couple would be dancing like that. It would be amazing. I believe that’s how dances are supposed to be, especially prom. Why take a friend

to prom and be forced into an awkward situation by grinding? Everyone, and I mean everyone, should learn how to at least waltz, slow dance, and because we are North Dakotan’s, how to two-step. This would make it appropriate for all ages to dance together. Knowing these kinds of dances will make it easier for a person to take part in other types of dances, like wedding dances, dances at conventions, and youth rally dances. At these dances one would mostly dance alone or with a group of friends. One wouldn’t see grinding at these dances because it is considered inappropriate and rude. A lot of swing dancing is happening at these types of dances, along with two stepping. This type of dancing is not suggestive or vulgar, compared to other types of dancing. I think that school dances get a lot more provocative as we get older, and I also belive that we should learn how to control ourselves when these situations arise. I hope this shows some people how nasty school dances are and give them some ideas on what else could be done. There are many other ways to dance than grinding and procreating on the dance fl oor in front of the entire school.

The stress from hours of dress shopping, fi nding a tux, picking out matching fl owers, doing hair and make-up can be summed up with one small word: PROM. With themes like “Dancing in the Moonlight” and “A Night of Random Awesomeness,” prom has changed at Beulah High School with new styles and trends of each year. The word “prom” is short for “promenade,” which means “a ball or dance as of a particular class at a school or college” (www.promworks.com, 2010). The earliest proms took place in the late 1800’s at Ivy League colleges and universities. Back then, students wore their Sunday dress clothes to the dance. For girls, prom is all about the dress. There are many different types of dresses that girls can wear to the special night. These dresses include: cocktail, ball gowns, A-line, baby doll, one-shouldered, strapless, and halter. At last year’s “A Night of Random Awesomeness,” the trend seemed to be bright colors and patterns for the BHS girls. Another element of prom that has also changed with new trends and style are fl owers. Couples used to sport the simple

corsages and boutonnieres, but now girls carry vibrant bouquets of unique arrangements. Everybody who goes to prom wants to have the perfect date. Years ago it was presumed that the boy asked the girl, but today it’s normal for girls to ask the boys. Students who go as just friends rather than actual couples are becoming more common. The junior class usually puts on prom for the seniors, and it seems as though each class wants their night to be bigger and better than the year before.

Theme is one of the most important, if not the most important, aspect of prom. The Beulah Middle School gymnasium is transformed each year into something special. The 1998 junior class went for a romantic appeal with their “Truly, Madly, Deeply” theme. In 2004, the gym was decorated to resemble “When Night Falls.” No matter what theme, color of dress, type of fl owers, or hairstyles, couples are bound to have a good time and make lasting memories at prom.

A walk down memory lane brings back romantic proms fi lled with sparkles, ruffl es, and big hair. Photos courtesy old issues of The Miner.

FFXIII brings new life to an old saga

Serna asks, What’s in your closet, Coltyn Anderson?”By: Keanon Serna Senior Coltyn Anderson is known for his fl aming red hair and cuddly personality. The Miner Incidents is here to turn the tables on the former “What’s in your closet writer and investigate if his fl aming exterior extends into the realms of his closet.

Miner Incidents: What’s the smelliest thing in your closet?Coltyn Anderson: Probably dirty socks or underwear, or hidden old smelly food that I don’t know is there, or the small family that I’m hiding in the corner.

MI: What’s the most expensive item in your closet?CA: A big remote controlled truck that I got from my uncle or a big sports card collection.

MI: What is the name of the monster living in your closet? What does it look like?CA: It was Jennifer; it was blue and looked like a shark mixed with the boogeyman. But the small family ate it.

MI: What would you like to fi nd in your closet when you clean it?CA: My “Friday Night Lights” movie. I miss it.

MI: If Godzilla was fi ghting King Kong in your closet what would they use for weapons? Which would win?CA: These old 1980’s fi ghter jet gun things that were my dad’s when he was a kid--aka super old video games.

MI: What does your closet smell like?CA: It’s a musty aroma mixed with dirt clothing, and chicken fried rice (because of the small family) with a hint of air freshener that didn’t work

MI: What is the largest item in your closet?CA: A giant stuffed banana from the state fair.

MI: What is the smallest item?CA: A penny or a blow gun needle that worked its way down there.

MI: How would you describe your closet?CA: Two words: messy and unorganized

MI: What is the most random item in your closet?CA: The large banana because I own carnies and their dumb games.

MI: What type of clothing is in your closet?CA: Only the hippest/raddest/grooviest clothing on the

market today.

MI: What can’t you throw away that’s in your closet but you really should?CA: Old items that never get used anymore, like bats, balls, scuba gear, you know the usual.

MI: Ninjas or Pirates? And Digimon or Pokemon?CA: Pirates because their favorite letter is a ‘C’ when you’d think it’s an arrrrrrrrrrrrhhhh!

Final Fantasy XIII is the long awaited release of the Final Fantasy series on the next generation gaming consoles (PS3 & XBOX360). It was developed and created by Square Enix. The release of Final Fantasy XIII (13) is a blessing and a curse. When I pick up my copy, I will have absolutely zero social life. Sorry everyone, I will be more addicted to this game than Call of Duty. There will be no returned texts or calls. I have waited for this game my whole life. I am destined to play FFXIII for hours upon hours. Just to warn all of you, you’re about to see my inner nerd. True, I have always embraced my nerdiness but bear with me, it’s about to get real nerdy, real fast. FFXIII is a RPG (role playing game) based in the city of Cocoon. It’s supposed to be a perfect city in the sky. The main heroine is Lightning. Her real name is unknown. Gamers can also play as a number of side characters who all have special abilities. I would tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin the game for you RPGers. The graphics for this game are incredible!

This is the best looking RPG I have ever seen. Actual game play is crystal clear. People and monsters look fantastic. Everything is so pristine, players can see every detail. Even the hair moves on its own! The developers at Square Enix made a whole new Active Time Battle system. Players are able to choose multiple moves per-turn. This is achieved through a segmented ATB gauge, each move takes up one or two or all of the segments. This gives a full array of attacks per turn, both magical and physical. As with all RPG’s players can level up each character. FFXIII offers a unique twist on this. The “Crystarium” is what FFXII brings to the table. It faintly resembles FFX’s sphere grid. To gain new abilities and enhanced attributes it costs crystarium points. The player also has access to six different types of roles: Commando, Ravager, Sentinel, Synergist, Saboteur, and Medic. Each role has specifi c abilities you’ll be able to unlock in the crystarium. The different roles of each respective character team up during a battle in defensive, offensive, or balanced formation. Characters in the game each have a spirit

that will fi ght for them called Eidolons. The Eidolons are paired with a specifi c character such as Lighting and Odin. Lightning is the main heroine and Odin is her Eidolon. When using an Eidolon the player has points and different attacks that take up the points. They will deal great damage in numerous ways. The only thing I do not like about the game is that after the player defeats a monster or it gives them a rating and statistics about the fi ght. It rates the fi ght on a scale of six stars and gives the player points to use on the crystarium. They present the statistics in an arcade that takes away from the game. They show the whole thing in dumb, stupid grid frame. I did not like this because it made the fi ghts seem kind of dumb in the end but still loads of fun. The XBOX360 version contains three discs while the PS3 version contains only one disc. I, Keanon Serna, do hereby give Final Fantasy XIII fi ve jalapenos, for being the best RPG I have ever seen or played. It has cutting-edge-game play graphics, new fi ghting systems, and beautiful artwork that makes this a masterpiece for everyone.

Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake that reached 7.0 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of this massive earthquake lies dangerously close to the capital, Port-au-Prince and affecting an estimated 3 million people. Even though BHS students weren’t directly affected by this earthquake, they are still eager to help the cause. “I want to make a difference and be positive in someone’s life. I think by raising medical donations and sending them over there and getting to see the results, kids will really feel good about themselves for helping,” Hafner said. Haiti is the poorest country in the

Western Hemisphere. 80 percent of the population is in deep poverty and 54 percent is in abject, or utterly hopeless and humiliating, poverty. Haiti received debt forgiveness for about $525 million of its debt through the Highly-Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) initiative in 2009. Their government relies on formal international economic assistance to be able to sustain their country (cia.gov, 3/11/10). A group of Beulah High School students is organizing a charity drive for earthquake victims in Haiti. The students are in contact with a registered nurse from the United States who supervises fi ve clinics that serve 20,000 persons in very rural areas of Haiti. He also provides medical care to two orphanages near La Cayes. The students have the unique opportunity to see the change they’ve made. If they go to gospelgrower.org, they can see the difference they’ve made fi rst hand. When they start getting supplies to them Reynolds will be taking pictures and posting them on that site. The catastrophic damage in Port-Au-Prince has caused many residents to fl ee to the countryside for safety. This has increased the demand on already limited health resources (cia.gov, 3/12/10). The student’s goal is to collect and ship over-the-counter medications, fi rst aid items, and nutrition supplies to support specifi c medical clinics by putting boxes at our local businesses and around our schools. They prefer donations to be actual items, rather than monetary donations, but will accept either one. “Whatever people can give would be great; medical donations would be the best though. I just want our students to come together to support a common cause,” Hafner said. Each pride period is asked to donate whatever they can. A prize will be awarded to the winner.

Dwyer replaces Hoff in English department

FCCLA heads to stateSpeech goes to Bowman

By: Tyler Freuer

New English teacher Rachel Dwyer attended Bismarck Shiloh Christian High School, where she ran cross country and track and, according to Dwyer, was a terrifi c water/girl for the boy’s basketball team. She attended Concordia College and graduated from NDSU, with a degree in school counseling and English. “I also considered becoming a hot dog eating contender or arm candy for a millionaire as a career, but there’s plenty of time for that still. The truth is, I just like teaching too much, “Dwyer said. Before coming to Beulah, Dwyer did internships and summer teaching at Oak Grove and Mandan High School. This year is her fi rst year of full-time teaching. “My favorite part about teaching is that

every day is different; I haven’t been bored at work since last August when I started,” Dwyer said. Dwyer is a great addition to the staff, teaching English I, English IV, and Remedial English. “According to some of the freshmen, I started teaching because I am secretly a cannibal who preys upon high school students. However, I just like working with kids and I love summer vacation,” Dwyer said. Dwyer took the job in Beulah because she likes small towns and the blue and gold school colors. Another key part of living in Beulah for her was having the convenience of a fast-food restaurant like Pizza Ranch. Dwyer is currently the speech coach and next year will help coach cross country. Dwyer is a fun teacher who brings some new life to the staff.

On Feb.17, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members participated in Students Take Action with Recognition Events in Belfi eld. They were judged by a panel and competed against schools in the district. “The participants are judged by three judges: two adults and one student. They are judged off a rubric sheet,” adviser Pauline Hoepfner said. Kylie Flemmer, Brandon Renner and Cheyanne Pederson participated in Applied Tech. “We presented a movie about eating healthy. We made the movie of us making a healthy snack,” Pederson said. “We took fi rst at district, so we are going to state.” Other teams including Brooke Renner, Kendra Seibel, and Taryn Zacher competed in Chapter Showcase Manual. They received silver at districts. Chapter Showcase is where the participants make a scrapbook of all the thing the club did the whole year. The participants present the scrapbook and then them Wright a ten minute speech. “This year I participated in Chapter

Showcase. We took 2nd at districts,” Kendra Seibel said. The 2010 FCCLA State Leadership Conference will be held in Bismarck on April 18 - 20th. Even if the members did not qualify for State, they can still attend workshops and be a judge. “I am going to state but not as a STAR events competitor. This year I am going to judge,” Seibel said. Members look forward to attending the State Competition for different reasons. “It’s always fun to see old friends,” said public relations offi cer, Jayme Pischel said, “I am looking forward to improving our presentation and spending time with all the wonderful people.” Pishel did not compete in star events this year she competed last year. She is working on her presentations over the summer and will compete next year. In July, National FCCLA will be held in Chicago. Some of the members of Beulah’s FCCLA will be attending this event. The members have to win at state to go to nationals. “I am looking forward to going to Chicago for Nationals and having fun the rest of the year,” said Vice President Brooke Renner.

to the commanding offi cer of Fort Buford in Montana. In doing this he hoped to teach his son that they were now friends of the Americans. Sitting Bull also said during his surrender I wish it to be remembered that I was the last man of my tribe to surrender my rifl e. In 1889 the Sioux Act reduced the Sioux territory to its present size. This treaty, along with the performance of the Ghost Dance, led to a fi ght between the army and the Native Americans in 1890. The army was frightened by the dances, mistaking them for war dances (www.sioux-indians.com, 03/22/10). “The Ghost Dance religion brought renewed hope to the people of the Sioux Nation. Dancers believed the buffalo would return, white people would go away, and ancestors who had died would come back

to life,” according to www.sioux-indians.com (03/22/10). The United States army then went to arrest Sitting Bull. On December 15, 1890, 43 Indian police tried to arrest Sitting Bull at this home at the Standing Rock Agency. A large group of his supporters assembled outside of his house, to help Sitting Bull, but during the process, Sitting Bull was shot (Sonofthesouth.net, 03/16/10). According to Karsen, she and her brother Skye did not know a lot about their heritage before her assignment. This is due to the fact that her father, Shotae Little Soldier died when they were both very young. “We are not perfectly sure that Sitting Bull was a direct ‘blood’ relative. We do know that Little Soldier was either the son of or the step-son of Sitting Bull,” Karsen said. “Nonetheless, he was loyal to Sitting

The Beulah High School speech team heads to regionals on April 8 at Bowman. So far, three students have state qualifi ed. Junior Andrew Heller has state qualifi ed for his Dramatic Interpretation of MacBeth, a Serious Duo of Julius Caesar with Lucas Schnaidt, and for his Humorous Interpretation. “My favorite part of speech is making the people listen to me and all the Shakespeare I get to read,” Heller said. Heller, who is in his third year of speech, has a piece of advice for anyone thinking of joining speech. “If you join, make sure you do more than one event. A lot of people join, do one event, then get bored with their piece and quit,” Heller said. Heller believes that since he started speech, he has improved in everything. “I’ve fi nally started making it to fi nals,” Heller said. Freshman Kourtney Carr has gone to the fi nal rounds with EPR and Storytelling.

“My favorite part of speech is the bus trips to all of the different places, and the concessions at the high schools we go to,” Carr said. Carr has come a long way since her fi rst year of speech in seventh grade. “Now I’m able to perform the speeches in front of people I know instead of complete strangers. It’s easier for me now,” Carr said. A newcomer to speech, junior Lucas Schnaidt has qualifi ed with a Serios Duo with Andrew Heller and his Humorous Duo with Ethan Bohn. “My favorite part of speech is learning to be more comfortable with talking and acting differently around my peers,” Schnaidt said. “Also, listening to people laugh at the joke you’ve already told one hundred times is pretty rewarding.” Schnaidt also had some advice for those looking to join speech. “You have to be willing to have an open schedule after school. Practices are important to go to so you don’t go to the meets unprepared,” Schnaidt said. Speech is coached by Rachel Dwyer, Shannon Lennie, and Elizabeth Odermann.

Bull like a son and followed him through his journeys.” Karsen’s younger brother Skye Little Soldier stated that he believes Sitting Bull’s drive to achieve his goals reminds Skye a lot of who he has become, even though he doesn’t know exactly who “his people” are today, he is proud of his lineage. “We are proud of where we came from. We just never got the chance to learn more about our ancestors,” Karsen said. Today people can log on to a site like ancestry.com and look up census and voter lists, birth dates, marriage and death records, even military, immigration and emigration fi les. This particular sight even contains a link for DNA, which is genetic genealogy. People can pay $149 for a cheek-swab DNA test. Today family lineage is a click away.

What do/will you remember about the class of 2010?Mr. Baranick: I was reminded that it was the 2010 class that got charged by the rampaging bison at the national park campground on our Medora trip! I also recall that you were a very talkative bunch that needed an occasional scolding for not adhering to rules!
