Features of Folktales

• Authors-unknown. They were passed on mouth to mouth. This story is a German classic tale popularize by The Brothers Grimm

• Simple to read- They have moral values and happy ending

• No exact indication of place and time- e.g once upon a time, in a far, far away land…

• Mixture of magic, fantasy and supernatural forces. E.g dark magic (The Wicked Queen), dark force (the mirror) supernatural creatures (the seven dwarves)

• Only the important person are introduced. E.g Snow White have fair skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as the night, and the new queen was beautiful but vain.

• Always involve number 3 and 7- 3 attempts to kill snow white, and 7 dwarves

• Simple character and straightforward, e.g- good or bad, beautiful or ugly, strong or weak, rich or poor, wise or foolish, e.g Snow White was kind and The Wicked Queen was a bad person

Reason

• Familiar with children- children loves repetition

• Easy to read• Simple Plot• Suitable for Year 4 Students intermediate level

• The story could not happen in real life E.g animals can talk to humans

• Well-developed characters who manifest change as a result of significant life events. E.g Julian release his rabbit at the end of the story.

• Sufficient conflict and suspense to hold the reader’s interest. E.g ‘Titou is missing, where did he go?

• "For writers, the spices you add to make your plot your own include characters, setting, and dialogue." (Bell 2004, p. 16)

• Writers usually write what the readers desires.

• Plot and the storyline is simple• Easy to read• For Year 4 or Year 5 students

• any narrative, account, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be factual.

• The author writes in sequence /order.

• Story about other people determination and success

• Motivate students to do well especially in their studies

• Suitable for Year 5 or Year 6 students
