To start the day, we discussed current issues/events in the city of Dickinson. The first stop was at Consolidated. We learned that a lot more goes into watching TV than we thought! It was pretty complicated, but still interesting to learn.

Then, we went to the Water Treatment Plant. We got to see the equipment that is used when cleaning and trenching pipes. We also saw road signs, and man are they huge! We also got to see and watch the cameras used to look inside the pipes.

For lunch, we learned proper etiquette. It was really something else entirely. The lunch was also delicious.

To end the day, we went to the Dickinson Press and saw where the papers are printed as well as how a page is laid out. At the end o the tour we saw a book full of newspapers from 1943!

Overall, the day was very informative. Previously we never knew the complex processes involved in simple things such as getting a TV channel or water to your house.

Sax Motor Co. of Dickinson is part of the West Dakota Chevy Dealers of western North Dakota that have combined forces to launch the fourth annual new scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors.

The Chevy Scholar Program invites nominations for outstanding high school juniors and seniors in western North Dakota to compete to receive two $5,000 college scholarships.

Nominations began December 2013 and will end February 20, 2014, at which time 10 scholarship finalists will be chosen. From March 3 - March 17, 2014, online and text voting will determine the winners. The scholarship winners will be announced the week of March 21, 2014.

“As dealers, we are all individually involved in our communities, supporting youth sports, service organizations, and other community programs,” says West Dakota Chevy Dealers president Christian Kostelecky. “The Chevy Scholar program allows us to work together to provide an ongoing benefit to outstanding students across the region.”

Students can nominate themselves or be nominated by family, friends, parents, teachers or coaches. Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.chevyscholar.com or picked up from local Chevy dealers. Nominators fill out basic information including commu-nity involvement, academic achievements, extracurricular activities and volunteer work. Students must write a 250-500 word essay.

Past Chevy scholarship winners have kept in touch with the dealers and been extremely grateful for their scholarships. Madison Huber, the 2013 winner from Mandan, North Dakota said, “I could not be more excited about winning the Chevy Scholarship! College is extremely expensive, and this will help immensely. I am most proud about how much my community backed me.”

Cale Pagan, another 2013 winner from the Bismarck area said, “This is the biggest award that I have ever received. The support I have gotten from people I don't even know is overwhelming. The colleges I am applying for will certainly recognize this scholarship.”

“It’s nice to hear from past winners and to hear how they are doing,” said Kostelecky, “Past winners have used the scholarship to help with tuition, housing, and even their books and supplies. The scholarship is nice in the flexibility for the student to use the money to-wards what they need for college.”

Nomination forms can be submitted upon completion at any of the 10 West Dakota Chevy dealerships. At the end of the process, one nominator will win $500 through a random drawing.

To learn more or to nominate a student, go to http://www.chevyscholar.com or visit your local Chevy dealer.

Dakota Community Bank & Trust has contributed $400,000 to the North Dakota Housing Incentive Fund (HIF), supporting projects that will provide affordable housing in Bismarck, Dickinson and Mandan.

"At Dakota Community Bank, we believe it's important to promote the growth and development of the communities we serve," said Dakota Community Bank & Trust President Dale Pahlke.

Capitalized by contributions from North Dakota taxpayers, HIF provides developers of rental housing with low-cost financing if units are set-aside for essential service workers and low- to moderate-income households. The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) administers the program.

"Communities across North Dakota need affordable housing options, especially for lower income families and those living on fixed incomes," said Jolene Kline, NDHFA executive director. "I thank Dakota Community Bank for its continued support of the Housing Incentive Fund."

This is Dakota Community Bank's second contribution to the fund. The bank divided its most recent contribution between a Bismarck development for homeless individuals and families; a Mandan property that will provide affordable housing for seniors and families; and an apartment complex in Dickinson that has reserved units for the disabled clients of ABLE Inc. Altogether, Dakota Community Bank has contributed $600,000 to HIF.

In 1982 Dale Pahlke became President and CEO of Dakota Community Bank & Trust and Stan Sayler joined as Executive Vice Presi-dent and CFO in 1984. The bank currently has eleven branches throughout Western North Dakota.

NDHFA is a self-supporting state agency that finances the creation and rehabilitation of affordable housing across North Dakota. The Industrial Commission oversees the agency.
