are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us.
Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.
As you enter please remember the Coast Salish People, the original inhabitants of this
area, and join us in praying for healing and reconciliation.

A Reflection A Song for Simeon
Lord, the Roman hyacinths are blooming in bowls and
The winter sun creeps by the snow hills;
The stubborn season has made stand.
My life is light, waiting for the death wind,
Like a feather on the back of my hand.
Dust in sunlight and memory in corners
Wait for the wind that chills towards the dead land.
Grant us thy peace.
I have walked many years in this city,
Kept faith and fast, provided for the poor,
Have given and taken honour and ease.
There never went any rejected from my door.
Who shall remember my house, where shall live my children's children
When the time of sorrow is come?
They will take to the goat's path, and the fox's home,
Fleeing from the foreign faces and the foreign sword.
Before the time of cords and scourges and lamentation
Grant us thy peace.
Before the stations of the mountain of desolation,
Before the certain hour of maternal sorrow,
Now at this birth season of decease,
Let the Infant, the still unspeaking and unspoken Word,
Grant Israel's consolation to one who has eighty years and no tomorrow.
According to thy word.
They shall praise Thee and suffer in every generation
With glory and derision,
Light upon light, mounting the saints' stair.
Not for me the martyrdom, the ecstasy of thought and prayer,
Not for me the ultimate vision.
Grant me thy peace.
(And a sword shall pierce thy heart, Thine also).
I am tired with my own life and the lives of those after me,
I am dying in my own death and the deaths of those after me.
Let thy servant depart,
Having seen thy salvation. – T.S. Eliot

BLESSING OF THE CANDLES
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
All And with thy spirit.
Celebrant Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, the true light, that lightenest every man that cometh into this
world: pour forth thy blessing upon these candles, and sanctify them with the light of
thy grace, and mercifully grant; that even as these lights, kindled with visible fire, do
scatter the darkness of night; so our hearts, illumined by invisible fire, that is, by the
brightness of the Holy Spirit, may be delivered from all blindness of iniquity: that, the
eyes of our understanding being enlightened, we may discern such things as are pleasing
unto thee and profitable for our salvation; so that finally after the darkness and dangers
of this world, we may be found meet to attain unto the light everlasting. Through thee,
Christ Jesus Saviour of the world, who in perfect Trinity livest and reignest, God,
throughout all ages, world without end.
All Amen.
The Celebrant goes throughout the congregation with holy water to bless the hand candles
which were given at the door. Please hold them up high as the Celebrant passes by aspersing
them. After this the torchbearers will move throughout the Church to light the hand held
candles; please pass the light along. During this time the choir sings:

The Liturgy of the Word
OLD TESTAMENT READING Be seated
Reader A reading from the Book of Malachi.
See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you
seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you
delight indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his
coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like
fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the
descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to
the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to
the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Malachi 3:1-4
Reader The word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory
shall come in.
"Who is this King of glory?" "The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle."
Antiphon
Lift up your heads, O gates lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory
shall come in.
Who is he, this King of glory?" "The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory." Antiphon

EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.
Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same
things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that
is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death.
For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham.
Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he
might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of
atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered,
he is able to help those who are being tested. Hebrews 2:14-18
Sub-deacon The word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
ALLELUIA
Please stand as the torchbearers move throughout the church to light your hand candles
again for the Gospel reading.
Alleluia. The old man bore the child in his arms, but the child was the old man’s King.
Alleluia.
Senex puerum portabat (Mode I)
THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought
him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord,
"Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacri-
fice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two
young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man
was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy
Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not
see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into
the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was
customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,
"Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my
eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a
light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's
father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed
them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of
many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many
will be revealed - and a sword will pierce your own soul too." There was also a prophet,
Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived
with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-
four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and
day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to
all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished every-
thing required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of
Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God
was upon him. Luke 2:22-40
After the Deacon with the Book of the Gospels arrives back at the Altar please extinguish
your hand candles .

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
Deacon Let us humbly confess our sins to almighty God.
Kneel
All Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Maker of all things and judge of all people:
We acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness,
Which we from time to time most grievously have committed,
By thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty.
We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings.
Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past;
And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee
In newness of life,
To the honour and glory of thy name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins
to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him:
have mercy upon you;

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness;
and bring you to everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel
Celebrant All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy
tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to
suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacri-
fice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to con-
tinue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming
again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks
to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which
is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with
these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious
death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again
with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word
and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be
unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.
lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,
Lord our God.
Celebrant And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and
bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may
worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled
with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church
may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the
same Jesus Christ our Lord;

THE MYTH OF TODAY’S SECULAR WORLD-VIEW
Many people assume that our world today is profoundly secular and that a secular world view is
a necessary and logical result of modernity. Many of us accept the notion that an ideal moral and
ethical political system can only operate in the absence of religious belief. In fact, however, relig-
ion has failed to disappear, and in the twenty-first century it thrives, diversifying and growing all
over the world. In this series we confront the “myth” of the secular, shedding light upon the reli-
gious beliefs at the foundation of both our cultural epistemology and our social institutions. In
the first part of this series we will play excerpts from a CBC radio broadcast entitled, “The Myth
of the Secular” and discuss the contradictions behind the myth. We conclude with a look at the
work of philosopher Charles Taylor (A Secular Age), who redefines secularization in light of its
failure to uproot the religious and spiritual values of our age.

SEEKING CONFIRMATION?
REAFFIRMATION? RECEPTION?
If you desire the sacrament of confirmation, you
are invited to participate in a course of
preparation beginning Sunday, February 10th
following High Mass. We will meet weekly for
approximately ten sessions until April 28th. There
will be no session on Vestry Sunday, Palm Sunday
or Easter Sunday. Confirmation is an expression
of deepening and conscious commitment to the
way of Christ.
Reaffirmation is an opportunity to renew your
baptismal vows and Reception is for members
who were confirmed in other churches and who
now desire to be received into the Anglican
Communion. The sacrament is a means of grace
and strength for living out the vows made at
baptism.
We hope this may be a rich time of learning,
prayer, and relationship building. If you are
interested in preparation, please contact in person
or via email Fr. Mark, [email protected], or
Mtr. Jessica, [email protected].
The celebration of confirmation/reaffirmation/

THE PASCHAL CANDLE
Most of you are familiar with the Paschal Candle.
It is the first flame lit from the new fire at the
Easter Vigil, which represents the light of Christ
rising to dispel the darkness of our hearts and
minds. The candle is marked by special symbols:
the cross; the Greek letters for alpha and omega
reminding us that God is the beginning and the
end; the current year, representing God present
with us now; and five grains of incense
representing the five wounds of Christ. The
Paschal Candle is processed into the church at the
Easter Vigil and remains in its holder near the
altar throughout the Easter season, during which
it is lit at all Masses held in the main sanctuary.
The Paschal Candle is specially made and must be
ordered in advance of Easter. It costs in the
neighbourhood of $200. If you would like to
support this meaningful tradition by making a
donation toward the cost of the candle, please add
the amount to your offering envelope, and on the
outside of the envelope write the amount and
beside it write “Paschal Candle”. If you do not use
envelopes but would like to donate, please call the
Church Office.

PAX EASTER 2013: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The PAX editorial team gives thanks for your
ongoing contributions to our Parish magazine.
We now welcome submissions for our upcoming
Easter issue, the theme of which is renewing our
baptismal vows. This theme could be addressed in
any of the following ways: baptism as the
beginning of our journey of conversion to Christ;
the significance of baptism in the liturgy, such as
the invitation to our statement of the Creed ("Let
us confess the faith of our baptism"); exploring the
Church's practice of baptism at some moment in
Christian history; or the importance of baptism
within the Easter liturgies. As usual, we also
welcome submissions on other topics that you
may wish to explore. The maximum length for
written submissions is 500 words. All submissions,
whether articles, photos or artwork, are due no
later than Monday, February 25th. They can be
emailed to [email protected] or left in
the PAX mail slot just outside the Church office.
TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
UPDATE FROM DIOCESE
Dear Friends,
This is the first of a series of regular updates you
will receive over the next few months as we
mobilize our Diocese to participate in the
September 2013 Truth and Reconciliation
National Event here in Vancouver. These
communications are being sent to the designated
contact person in each deanery, with copies to all
Regional Deans, Archdeacons, the Diocesan
Archivist, Bishop Mark MacDonald, and the
Anglican representatives on the BC Ecumenical
Advocates for Healing and Reconciliation. Please
share these communications as widely as
possible.
1. TRC National Event, Vancouver.
The dates for the TRC event proper are Sept. 18-
21 (Wednesday-Saturday). In addition, the Indian
Residential Schools Survivors' Society and
Reconciliation Canada, in partnership with many
other community groups including churches, are
planning "book-end" events around the hearings.
These are: the All Nations Canoe Gathering on
Sept. 17; the event "A New Way Forward" at BC
HIGH MASS | 31
St. James’ News & Announcements
Place on the evening of Sept. 21; and a Walk for
Reconciliation on the morning of Sunday, Sept.
22. Church participation is welcome, and indeed
essential, at all three of these events as well as at
the TRC hearings themselves.
The TRC hearings will be held in the facilities of
the PNE at Hastings Park, which is within the
parish boundaries of St David of Wales. We are
hoping that it will be possible to designate St.
David's as the "parish church" for the TRC event,
and that the parish will be able to co-ordinate
spiritual support, and, to a limited extent,
logistical support for our Diocese's participation
in the TRC hearings.
2. Idle No More
This movement continues to gather momentum
across the country and our church has declared its
support for it. Non-indigenous people are
welcome to participate in Idle No More events as
they occur. Bishop Mark MacDonald has asked
that we keep Chief Theresa Spence in our prayers,
and also the meeting this coming Friday between
leaders of the AFN and the Government of
Canada. There are a number of Idle No More
events planned for the Metro Vancouver area this
Friday; please attend an event in your community
if you can, and encourage others to do so.
3. Resources
Useful information and updates can be found on
the website of the Truth and Reconciliation Com-
mission (www.trc.ca) and KAIROS Canada
(www.kairoscanada.org). Also, Laurel Dykstra,
Clarence Li, or myself would be happy to speak to
a parish, deanery gathering, or other group or
event. If you know of anyone else who would like
to be part of this network and assist in getting the
word out, please let me know and I will add his or
her name to the list.
Thank you for supporting and participating in this
important work!

OPEN HOUSE AT SACRED SPIRIT CENTRE
884 East Pender St.
Tuesday, February 12 from 4-7 pm.
The Imagine Project of the DTES Roman Catholic
Parish plans to rehabilitate the 10,000 sq. ft.
parish school for multipurpose use and ensure that
the new Sacred Spirit Space be used to enrich life for
their neighbours. To reach that goal they want to
hear from us - their neighbours. Please attend the
Open House if you can to see the space. Also, read
the January 2013 Parish Council Minutes and take a
few minutes to fill out the survey left for us by
Imagine Project. In the survey you can express how
you imagine the space can enrich the
neighbourhood.
