Breakfast Series Explores Generational Influences in the Workforce

First ATHENA Leadership Forum Grows Relationships

We’re excited to have Rob Frans, Workplace Consultant for Steelcase Inc., joining us for our next installment of the series on February 19. Rob will be discussing generational influences in the workplace… addressing questions such as: How are multi-generations in your workforce impacting your business? Are worker expectations changing and if so, how? This Business Matters topic explores both the latest trends and your reactions as business leaders in leveraging the shifting dynamics in the workplace. Rob brings a broad background of experience in both business and education to the issue of generational differences. Deanna Demory, Director of Community Impact at the United Way, will be giving the Community Update at the event as well. Join us the third Tuesday every month to keep in touch with community happenings while building your professional network at our monthly Business Matters—The Breakfast Series.

The unemployment rate for West Michigan continues to decline, yet there are still a number of manufacturers looking for high-quality employees. To address this problem, the Chamber is once again working with community partners to host another Ready NOW! employability program for job seekers interested in a manufacturing career. The week-long event will run from March 6 – 8 at the GVSU Allendale Campus and is open to area businesses interested in participating. Unlike traditional job fairs or hiring methods, the Ready NOW! format focuses on pairing employers and job seekers so they can learn from one another. Job seekers gain a greater understanding of what area employers are looking for through participation in workshops, expert panels, discussions and skill development exercises. Job seekers who complete the week-long program are guaranteed two interviews for open jobs immediately available from area employers. Similar programs throughout the region have resulted in a better than 60 percent placement rate. We anticipate the Ready NOW! program will produce over 150 quality candidates to fill open positions. We are looking for manufacturing companies who have jobs available to participate during the week of March 6 – 8. Participating employers have the opportunity to serve as panelists, assist with support workshops, be table facilitators, and also interview quality candidates at the completion of the program.

If you are interested in participating or volunteering for this program, please contact Chris Glass at 616.771.0311 or [email protected].

The Chamber News helps you get to know fellow members by profiling two organizations in each issue. Email [email protected] if you would like to be profiled in a future member spotlight.

LIFE EMS AMBULANCEIn a life-saving emergency, skill and compassion are what you need. That’s the mission of locally-owned Life EMS Ambulance, a high-performance paramedic ambulance service that serves an

eight-county region in Michi-gan and recently received nationally recognized “ACE” accreditation status for the company’s newly renovated Command Center.

Life EMS Ambulance, which employs more than 375 full and part-time associates, was founded in early 1980 by Mark Meijer, son of retail leader Fred Meijer. Mark was inspired by a local phy-sician to become a paramedic and built upon his family’s strong entrepreneurial roots to create and grow the Life EMS Ambu-lance service from a make-shift dispatch center to a top-notch emergency care organization. Today, Life EMS Ambulance covers more than 3,500 square miles throughout the Greater Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo/Por-tage, Ionia, Mason, Newaygo and Lake Counties with portions of Allegan County. The company boasts nearly 60 custom-de-signed paramedic ambulances equipped with the latest pre-hospital care equipment and also offers a fleet of 30 wheelchair mobility vans providing transportation to nursing homes and doctor’s appointments. Plus, their Life Extra Care service is the only locally answered personal response system. Life EMS Ambulance has also created an Education Centre that provides workplace and group CPR programs as well as fully certified Emergency Medical Training programs for individuals seeking a rewarding career path. And as the company has grown, so too has the value of Cham-ber membership. “In our many years of membership with the Chamber, we are pleased with the ongoing, helpful programs and important business advocacy,” said Meijer.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY RECYCLINGAdvanced Technology Recycling (ATR) began in 2002 after par-ent company, B&K Technology Solutions, responded to an in-creasing need for environmentally-friendly e-waste disposal. To-

day, ATR is focused on providing a total recycling solution for the commercial industry while also serving the residen-tial market in properly disposing elec-tronics in a safe and secure way.

ATR is a zero landfill, zero export company—offering in-house logistics, a comprehensive client portal and reporting options, employee buy back and profit sharing programs for larger ac-counts, and data security to help companies stay HIPAA com-pliant with sensitive personal data. With a strong foundation in IT infrastructure and a wide range of industry sectors, the com-pany has the ability to help clients increase revenue through electronic collections and provide disposal options for large vol-umes of equipment. In 2011, ATR processed 15 million pounds of e-scrap and they have been recognized for their recycling programs. ATR’s recy-cling ethic even goes as far as their corporate headquarters—a repurposed glove manufacturing building on Hall St. SW that had previously sat vacant for 30 years. After eight months of Chamber membership, ATR has found out that the Chamber is so much more than just great network-ing and professional development. The company has acquired new customer equipment pickups, started serving on the Am-bassador Committee, and developed personalized relationships with two legislative representatives as a result of Chamber in-volvement. “The Chamber has offered a tremendous amount of opportu-nities for our voice to be heard,” said Whitney Ehresman, Business Development Manager. “Every step of the way the Government Affairs staff have been touching base with us and providing us with valuable direction.”

State of The State, from Page 1on important issues affecting your business. We owe our many successes in 2012 to our Chamber members, especially the hun-dreds of members who volunteer on Chamber issue commit-tees. These committees shape our priorities and connect indus-try experience with policy expertise—strengthening the voice of West Michigan business at the legislative table. There is still much work to be done in 2013, and we know we will be successful thanks to the continued support of our mem-bers and their contributions to our advocacy efforts. CHAMBER Scene

The Chamber is honored to announce that Faye Richardson-Green has been selected as our 2013 Diversity Visionary Award recipient! A long-time diversity and inclusion leader and Steelcase Inc. Director of Global Learn-ing & Development, Richardson-Green will be presented with this prestigious annual award at the March 20 celebration at the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Created by the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce in 2003, the Diversity Visionary Award recognizes an individual or organization for their exemplary efforts, advancements, and contributions to ensure diversity, inclusion, and equity within their own institution or community. With over 25 years of broad community leadership ex-perience, Richardson-Green has clearly demonstrated these attributes in her tenacious efforts to align like-minded individuals and organizations around issues of diversity-inclusion and racial justice. “Faye Richardson-Green has been a true ally and leader in the field of diversity and inclusion. The Diversity Visionary Award recognizes her as a powerful change agent in the community and honors the significant contributions she has made in pursuit of equity,” said Rick Baker, Chamber President & CEO. Richardson-Green is the co-founder and board chair for Partners for a Racism-Free Community (PRFC), which envisions and works towards a community of compassion and justice that promotes racial harmony. She also remains an active founding member of the Summit on Racism—participating for the past 15 years in the annual summit as a moderator, panelist, or session facilitator—and she serves as a planning committee

member and table facilitator for the City of Grand Rapids “Root Beer Summit,” which tackles statewide conversations on race. Within Steelcase, Richardson-Green has worked tirelessly to create an organizational culture that is equitable, diverse, and inclusive—guid-ing the research, development, and engagement of diversity programs and strategies since 1992 and leading the redesign of the company’s diversity efforts in 2009-2010. Richardson-Green will accept the award March 20 at the Chamber’s 2013 Diversity Visionary Award Celebration, which will also feature a keynote from Dr. Chris Benner, professor at University of California, Davis and co-author of Just Growth: Inclusion and Pros-perity in America’s Metropolitan Regions. Benner’s ground-breaking research and analysis in this book uncovers subtle and detailed processes, policies, and institutional arrangements that point to the ways certain regions around the country have been able to consistently link prosperity with inclusion.

Congratulations to Janet Hentges of Achievement Resources… our 2012 Ambassador of the Year!

Janet has participated in the Ambassadors Committee since June 2011 and has connected with numerous members providing information about their membership—always looking for ways to help them make the most of their involvement while providing a warm welcome to our newest members. “As a former business owner, I understand the importance of making cli-ents and people feel special,” said Janet, who enjoys networking and intro-ducing people to one another. “Bringing this mindset to the Ambassadors Committee helps me understand businesses better and allows me to help them connect through their membership.” During the past year, Janet attended 70 of the 96 chamber ribbon cut-ting events, served as the committee secretary, and proudly represented the Grand Rapids Area Chamber at the Statewide Ambassador conference in Jackson, MI last September. Janet will continue her outstanding service in 2013, having been recently elected by her peers to serve as the Ambas-sadors Committee Vice-Chair. The Chamber Team thanks Janet for her commitment and passion! To join Janet as a Chamber Ambassador, contact Mark Allen at [email protected] or 616.771.0348.

Chamber Names 2012 Ambassador of the Year

The Chamber staff will be bidding a fond adieu to the lady who brightens everyone’s day.

After 13 years of warmly welcoming newcomers and members alike at the Chamber’s front desk, Kathy Nelson will be retiring. “We will all miss Kathy. We have been honored to have her on our Chamber Team and have truly appreciated her hardwork and vibrant, positive spirit,” noted Rick Baker, Chamber President & CEO. “She has been our informal Director of First Impressions!” In addition to her welcoming role, Kathy has managed the office with admirable skill and expertise—keeping staff schedules straight, orga-nizing meeting rooms, tracking member newsflashes, fulfilling member requests, answering countless calls for information about the Chamber and the Grand Rapids area, and providing numerous other services while working under three different Chamber presidents. She has been a valu-able resource for tourists, visitors, members and more—always ready to lend a hand or provide intel on downtown eateries and the latest events. Kathy’s last day will be Friday, February 22. She says she’s looking for-ward to relaxing with her husband, friends, and family (including grand-kids!), and she’s already busy making some travel plans as well. “It has been my privilege meeting everyone. I have been proud to rep-

resent Grand Rapids to everyone requesting information about our beautiful city,” said Kathy of her time with the Chamber. “I will truly miss the people that have become a special blessing in my life.” To honor Kathy’s wishes, the Chamber will be closing early on Friday, February 8 to celebrate her adventures into retirement with a private farewell party with staff. However, if you are downtown in the next few weeks, feel free to stop by the Chamber office or drop her a line to wish her well. You may reach Kathy at [email protected] or by calling 616.771.0300.

Thank you to all who took the time to participate in the 2013 Government Affairs survey. It was a great success with more than 720 respondents. The results show local businesses are concerned with federal spending and healthcare costs, but they also see tremendous opportunity in the economic promotion of West Michigan and greater collaboration within our region. “Overall confidence in our state is growing among the busi-ness community, but it is being overshadowed by what is hap-pening in Washington with increases in spending and grow-ing deficits,” said Rick Baker, Chamber President and CEO. “The lack of certainty from the fiscal cliff debate is having an impact. Spending must be addressed to bolster confidence in the busi-ness climate.” In addition to Washington’s fiscal woes, the increasing cost of healthcare has again topped the list of concerns for business-es. “Businesses are seeing near double digit increases in insur-ance costs year after year,” said Andy Johnston, Vice President of Government and Corporate Affairs. “Federal healthcare reform expanded access to insurance but did nothing to address the rising costs. The increased complexity and compliance cost from federal reform has businesses worried.” On a positive note, business leaders feel that West Michigan is positioned for sustained growth and called on local units of government to collaborate and work with community partners to promote the region. “We have a great history of collaboration in West Michigan and a strong and vibrant business community is a key player in that story,” said Johnston. “We will continue to work with others to attract and keep the best businesses and talent here in West Michigan.” Other priorities that garnered support in the survey included: transportation funding, reducing regulations, cost of energy, and early childhood funding.

A complete summary of the survey can be found at www.gran-drapids.org/government-affairs.
