Worship Notes:

Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor presents today’s sermon from Mark. RandyDaniel, a financial planner and chairman of our church board, hosts today’s worship. VictorBrown, dean for enrollment management at Kettering College, tells today’s Children Story.Eugene and Mabel Cowling, who joined our church in 1968, present today’s Scripture Lesson andPrayer. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist for today’s service. DonaldHuff is the director of the Praise Orchestra and also heads the instrumental program at SpringValley Academy.

As we gather for worship we hear It was first performed onDecember 12, 1944 on a nationwide NBC radio broadcast. Alfred Reed had just 16 days to write thiscomposition for a holiday concert in Denver, Colorado to promote Russian-American unity. Reedfound an authentic 16th-century Russian Christmas song, "Carol of the Little Russian Children," touse for an introductory theme. The liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church is entirely vocal, and Reed captured the sonorities, rhythmic inflections, and flowing phrases of the human voice inhis composition. Although the work is composed as a single movement, it features four distinctsections. The opening "Carol" sets a gentle mood, followed by the "Antiphonal Chant" carried bythe woodwinds. "Village Song" is presented in two-bar phrases that rise and fall with the liturgy. The church bells announce the final "Cathedral Chorus" that steadily builds, pauses for a softchorale, then continues adding instruments until all the colors and intensity of the celebration fillthe cathedral. A typical performance of "Russian Christmas Music" lasts 14-16 minutes.

was written by Sergei Rachmaninoff and published as the last of his"Fourteen Songs, Op. 34." Originally written for voice and piano accompaniment, it contains nowords, but is sung using any one vowel of the singer's choosing. This piece is so musically complete,it has been transcribed for numerous instruments including handbells.

is a Russian Orthodox-style choral anthem composed in 1912 by PavelChesnokov (1877-1944). It was one of the very last sacred works he composed before he wasforced to turn to secular arts by the oppressive Soviet Union. Although he never heard his owncomposition performed, his children had the opportunity years following his death. Its earlypopularity drove editors to produce many different versions in both Russian and English. Originallyscored for either six or eight voices, the work is a communion hymn based on a Kievan chant melodyand Psalm 74.

was written by Samuel R. Hazo, a young composer and educator from Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. The piece in its simplest analysis, can be described as a tone poem that captures theintense conditions of glory and pain. It is full of excitement, tension, and eventually the struggleends with a sense of victory.

Unquestionable TrustPart 5 in Series:

I. The Smell of Trust

II. A Story of Trust(Mark 4:35-41) That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go

over to the other side.” (36) Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as hewas, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. (37) A furious squall came up,and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. (38) Jesus was in thestern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t youcare if we drown?”

(39) He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Thenthe wind died down and it was completely calm.

(40) He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(41) They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the waves

obey him!”

III. The Questions of Trust

A. “Disciples (shouting over the storm): ‘Jesus, Master, don’t You care that we’regoing to die?’” (Mark 4:38,

B. “Jesus: ‘How can you be so afraid? After all you’ve seen, where is your faith?’”(Mark 4:40, The Voice

C. “Disciples (to one another): ‘Who is this Jesus? How can it be that He haspower over even the wind and the waves?’” (Mark 4:41,

IV. The Song of Trust

What a busy year 1968 was for our congregation! The previous year groundbreaking for the new school,Spring Valley Academy, had commenced what was hoped to be a quick construction of a building with ampleroom for the growing enrollment of students. The old Dayton Junior Academy located off of Wilmington Pikehad to be vacated during the summer because the agreement in selling it demanded that the new owners(later to become Dayton Christian) take possession during the summer. Added to that stress, a builders’ strikefrom May-July had slowed down construction. So in September of 1968 the doors were opened to studentsfor classes in an unfinished facility. Plastic film covered the holes where windows would soon be, and scoresof volunteers showed up on weekends and late nights to paint the rooms. Trudy Johnson remembers rollinga grocery cart, that served as her desk, from classroom to classroom. The students were excited, looked goodbut the proposed uniforms never made it past the committee’s selection.

Meanwhile back on Southern Boulevard, the dedication of Kettering College of Medical Arts had been held onSeptember 17, 1967 and the next day 130 students enrolled in nursing and radiology technology. ErnestNeufeld helped set up the program in radiology and was the head radiology technician at the hospital. WilliamSanborn was the dean of the college and Eugene Cowling was both the registrar and director of studentfinance. Henry Brodie taught biology, Al Brendel was the religion professor as well as the hospital chaplain,Ed Collins was the librarian, and Mabel Cowling set up and ran the college book store. The first nurse cappingservice took place in February of 1968 and the college emblem pin won awards for its design.

The hospital, now in its third year, won another three years of accreditation and began accumulating awardsfor excellence. Cleta Lane (later to marry George Nelson, president of the institution) one of three nurses whowrote the handbooks and developed/implemented the nursing procedures, some of which are still used today.Ms. Lane was selected to join a team of medical specialists engaged in clinical research at the MaimonidesMedical Center in Brooklyn, New York. In July of 1968, Willa Hedrick, clinical director of the hospital’s Schoolof Medical Technology, won the annual award for educational advancement from the Registry of MedicalTechnologists after delivering her paper at the American Society of Medical Technology in Houston, Texas. She was also asked to serve on the editorial staff of the “American Journal of Medical Technology.” NemiVelasco joined Kettering Memorial Hospital to become the hospital Treasurer. At the end of the year, GeorgeNelson retired as President of the hospital.

The church was going through similar growth and the congregation welcomed new members every week. The Pathfinder Club was winning awards at the state camporees. There were programs held in the KCMAgymnasium every week, including Friday night MV meetings, Sabbath School, worship service, Saturdayvespers, and a Saturday evening social. The choir met every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and on Saturdayafternoons at 4 p.m. to rehearse for its annual presentation of Handel’s “Messiah.” On an interesting note,Bonnie Neufeld hosted a church-wide Thanksgiving dinner for everyone to “eat and celebrate” together. Ernieand Bonnie’s daughter, Kathy Boyd, hosted the Thanksgiving dinner again this past year (2013), making it anevent that has continued (although sporadically) for 45 years.

Plans for the new church building were finalized. A drawing of the proposed edifice was on the bulletin cov-er every week. Eugene Kettering had agreed to give the land across the street from the hospital for a newchurch, but only after the ground was broken. A surprise 60th birthday party was given for Eugene Ketter-ing, at which time George Nelson learned that Mr. Kettering had a heart condition. Now the urgency to starton the church became paramount in George Nelson’s mind.
