February 11, 2013 Q2-Pg.Daily Goal: We will model solar and lunar eclipses. Homework: Read your New York Times article and answer the questions.Science Starter:1. What is the

difference between revolution and rotation?

2. Make a hypothesis about what the streaks are in this picture.

3. What kind of wave is a sound wave?

Phases of the Moon

During what phases are the Moon, Earth and sun aligned in a straight line?

What is this phase?

What is this phase?

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT ECLIPSES?Let’s assess our prior knowledge.

Page 4: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

EclipsesEclipses happen when:

Moon’s shadow hits Earth orEarth’s shadow hits Moon

An eclipse happens because either the Earth or the Moon is blocking the sun, and it casts shadow.

Eclipse = a shadow

Page 5: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

Are all eclipses the same?• There are 2 kinds of eclipses:– Solar eclipses – Lunar eclipses

What does solar mean again?

What does lunar mean?

What is a solar eclipse?• Solar eclipse - occurs when the Moon

passes directly between the Earth and sun, blocking light from the sun

Solar eclipses happen during which phase?

• Solar eclipses happen during the new Moon phase.

What is a lunar eclipse?• Lunar eclipse - occurs when the earth

passes directly between the sun and the Moon. The Moon is in the Earth’s shadow.

Lunar eclipses happen during which phase?

• Lunar eclipses happen during the full Moon phase.

Critical Thinking!

• We have a new Moon every month. Solar eclipses happen during the new Moon phase. Why don’t we have solar eclipses every month?– Generate a hypothesis.

Page 17: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

Just like the Earth’s axis, the Moon’s orbit is tilted. Most times, the Moon is a little bit above or a little bit below the shadow.

An eclipse can only occur when the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are directly aligned.

Page 18: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

Let’s model it!• In your table groups, you have 45 seconds to

choose one person to be:– The Sun– The Moon– The Earth– The CEO (the CEO will organize the group and

double check that everyone is where they should be.)• In groups of 3, the Sun will also be the CEO.

Page 19: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

Not yet, but when I say go:

• Arrange yourselves like a total solar eclipse.• Move to make yourselves a partial solar

eclipse.• Arrange yourselves like a total lunar eclipse.

Page 20: February 11, 2013Q2-Pg.

Complete your worksheet as an exit ticket.

• If you finish early, color:– The Earth blue– The Moon white– The Penumbra gray– The Sun yellow– The Umbra black
