Greetings, and welcome to the 49th annualBerklee High School Jazz Festival. We are sopleased that you are with us to experience ourevent, which highlights young artists, band andchoir directors, music education, and jazz.

As the festival approaches its 50th year, we are proud to say that it has becomethe largest of its kind in the United States, featuring thousands of studentperformers who represent public and private high schools from across the coun-try and beyond. The students embody the very best of high school instrumentaland vocal jazz in large- and small-ensemble combinations, as well as solo vocal-ists (featured in our Jazz Singers Showcase category, now in itssecond year). This year, we have expanded the vocal ensemble category toaccommodate increased demand, adding a third V class to the schedule.

One of our festival goals is to provide enriching opportunities for young artiststo experience jazz from multiple angles (i.e., performing, attending clinics,visiting exhibits offered by Berklee and festival sponsors, and hearing theperformances of musicians just like them). In addition, we recognize the powerof bringing music teachers together to showcase the talents and efforts of theirstudents, inspire each other, and expand their professional networks.Accordingly, we have scheduled time throughout the day for these activities,and we encourage you to take advantage of and explore the offerings thatmost interest you.

The festival held a jazz education forum and luncheon on Friday, February 10,bringing directors, artists, industry representatives, and other arts leaders toBerklee to discuss best practices and the future of jazz education. This year,Robert Klevan was at the forum (and will be at the festival) to share his expertiseand receive a special acknowledgement of his impressive career and legacy as ajazz educator and leader of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Jazz is an American art form that provides a vehicle for personal expression andcreativity not found in other music genres. As you perform today, we encourageyou to play and sing your best song, soar with personal expression throughimprovisation, and feel free to take musical risks. Most important, enjoy theopportunity to make music—with friends.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this festival happen—and to the teachers,booster groups, parents, school principals, bus drivers, and others who supportedthe thousands of young musicians here today. Together, we are facilitatingessential musical moments in the development of young artists, and hopefullycreating memories that will last a lifetime.

Festival History

Former Berklee President Lee Eliot Berk initiated the college’s annual HighSchool Jazz Festival. When it debuted on March 15, 1969, it featured 21 bandsand was known as the New England High School Stage Band Festival. TheRush-Henrietta Central High School Band, directed by Thomas Ghidiu, was thewinning ensemble.

Klevan graduated summa cum laude from the Conservatory of Music at theUniversity of the Pacific. He pursued postgraduate studies at DePaul Universityand at Pacific, where he received a master’s degree in music. In 1993, Klevanearned his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin.

Herb Pomeroy Jazz Composition/Arranging ContestBerklee is pleased to introduce the seventh annual Herb Pomeroy JazzComposition/Arranging Contest, sponsored by the Jazz CompositionDepartment and the Professional Writing Division. The contest is limited tohigh school students enrolled in grades 9–12. The winning arrangement will beperformed by the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, directed by Greg Hopkins,at the awards presentation at 5:30 p.m. in the Hynes Veterans MemorialAuditorium on the second level.

Ensemble AwardsA first-place trophy will be presented to the winning ensembles in competingclasses L1 through L6 of the large ensemble category, the winning combos inclasses S1 through S4, and the winning vocal jazz ensembles in classes V1, V2,and V3. A plaque will be presented to the second- and third-place ensemblesin each of the large competing classes, the competing combo classes, and thecompeting vocal jazz ensemble classes. Ensembles placing fourth in allcompeting classes will receive honorable mention plaques.

Berklee will present the following festival awards to winning ensembles andindividuals:

Jazz Singers ShowcaseThe Jazz Singers Showcase is an exciting category that features talented solovocalists performing jazz standards with a rhythm section. The first place winnerwill receive a full scholarship to the Five-Week Summer Performance Program,and will perform with the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, directed by GregHopkins, at the awards presentation at 5:30 p.m. in the Hynes Veterans MemorialAuditorium on the second level. Second and third place winners receive partialscholarships to the summer program of their choice.

John LaPorta Jazz Educator of the YearThe award is named after the legendary jazz educator who served as adistinguished professor at Berklee for more than three decades. This award,offered in conjunction with the Jazz Education Network (JEN), is presented atthe annual JEN Conference and represented at the Berklee High SchoolJazz Festival.

Robert Klevan, jazz educatorFor 27 years, Robert Klevan served as music director anddirector of fine arts at the Stevenson School (grades 9–12)in Pebble Beach, California. He recently retired after 16years as the director of bands at University of California–Santa Cruz (UCSC). Klevan is the jazz education directoremeritus for the Monterey Jazz Festival (MJF) and directorof the MJF High School Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble and

MJF Middle School Honor Band. In addition, Klevan is the jazz studies directorfor the York School (grades 8–12) in Monterey and director of the Pacific GroveHigh School Jazz Club “Jazz in the Grove” Big Band. Most recently, he was thecommunity relations specialist for CSU Summer Arts at California StateUniversity–Monterey Bay.

Klevan made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut with the UCSC WindEnsemble in May 2001 and returned for an encore performance with theensemble in February 2009. He is past president of the California OrchestraDirectors Association, a past member of the board for the Central Coast sectionof the California Music Educators Association (CMEA), past president for CMEA,and past vice president for the California Alliance for Jazz. He currently serves asa board member for the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival and Ensemble Monterey and isthe coordinator for the Jazz Education Network’s JENerations Jazz Festival.

Klevan’s articles on music teaching have been published in JazzEd Magazine,Jazz Education Journal, Monterey County Herald, CMEA Magazine, Journal forTexas Music Education Research, and The Instrumentalist.
