Jim Long has found a way to bring us back to basics with a sleigh ride through a snow-covered forest.

All winter, Long brings our guests on little adventures, adding breakfasts and dinners and the odd

special event to his regular roster of one hour and half hour tours.

This Valentine’s Day, for exam-ple, he and his Clydesdales—either Tom and Jerry or Doc and Bud—will take a few lucky lovers out for

breakfast, and ferry those who book a steakhouse dinner around for a particularly special evening in the snow.

Standing at 17-and-one-hand tall, and weighing in at roughly a

tonne per animal, there’s no miss-ing the magnifi cent creatures he pulls up in front of the Happy Val-ley Day Lodge with and the touch of romance they bring to a day is

spectacular.“Belgians are the strong ones.

Percherons are a good horse. Clydes, what they lack in strength they make up for in just eye appeal. They’re just a classy looking ani-mal,” said Long.

Long is somewhat of an expert on sleigh rides. Although he’s only been at Big White for the last seven years, spending roughly 125-130 days on the slopes, he’s been riding behind horses like these his entire life.

“I guess the first I remember was my dad going to pick up my sister from school,” he said. “We just had horses. So a sleigh ride at home meant you were just doing something. Out working.”

Long was raised in the Canadian Badlands and, like any good cow-boy, he isn’t one to expend energy

on words, particularly on himself. But he knows how to entertain,

offering pancakes or a rib and chicken barbecue in a woodsy cab-

in for those who would like to take a little time out on the hill.

And he knows how to train a group to enjoy an afternoon, day or even an overnight trip in the life-style he grew up enjoying.

Stationed just outside Red Deer, Alberta for the bulk of the year, his primary vocation sees him orga-nizing authentic covered wagon tours—day, overnighter and multi-day trips on an abandoned rail bed.

He has 12 wagons with wooden wheels and wooden seats and he trains those who come out to run the wagons themselves.

Prior to landing his Big White gig through an advertisement in a

horse magazine, he would throw in a few hayrides in for extra income, a sleigh ride in the winter.

“Jack of all trades master of none,” he says when asked about his vocation. “I never could settle into much.”

Long built the 16-seater sleigh he uses on the mountain himself. Some of the parts are 100 years old, just pieces he was already using, he explains.

He is nonplussed by any query about why he likes working with his horses, why he chooses to work in the fields—cultivating, seeding, cutting hay—with them over ma-chines that might work faster.

Sleigh Ride

Clydesdale horses Tom and Jerry play a little game of cat and mouse, matching one another stride for stride as they tackle their tours.

“Well, it’s just what you do,” he says. “I like the horses. Ask anybody with horses, they’ll tell you.”

Long’s particular pick of horse is a special one.

Clydesdales are originally Scot-tish. Developed in the early 1800s, they’re draught horses derived from farm horses in the Clydesdale area of Scotland, and their tack includes a regal neckpiece called a scotch top. Originally ornamented with the family crest, it showcased for anyone coming upon the sleigh.

Today the scotch top really just protects the animal from the ele-ments such that when the sleigh points into the weather, the Tom and Jerry’s of this world have a dry warm neck.

Looking down at their legs, the distinctive white covered hooves, seemingly fitted in knee-high fur moccasins one might term mittens if these were cats, often include a

brown leg in the mix.

Tom and Jerry, broth-ers, each have a brown left leg, al-thuogh there is no genetic significance Long insists.

“It’s just the way the good Lord p a i n t e d them,” he says. “There are four legs and two co-lours and s o m e t i m e s that’s just what you wind up with.”

Were one of the brothers to have a brown right leg it would make the

pair more of a match set and there-fore more v a l u a b l e ; but the effect as they are is still breath-taking.

Gl i s ten-ing in the snow on a warm win-ter day, their legs appear to dance across the white carpet in front of them, first a dark leg, then a white.

Steady as they go.Tom and Jerry are huge when

compared with a saddle horse,

but they’re still a good six to eight inches shorter than the Budweiser Clydesdales that have so famously inspired a donkey to try hair ex-tensions on his lower legs in one commercial and jumped the Grand Canyon in the name of love in an-other.

As this year’s Superbowl spot reminded those who watched—to the tune of Fleetwood Mac’s Land-slide, no less—one can follow the famous Clydesdales on Twitter, if one so desires.

This seems quite comical when confronted with the silent beauties checking out the pink Lululemon athletica bags of those milling about the mountain ice rink they call home each winter.

If you’re looking for a real deal experience with a horse-drawn sleigh and the Clydesdales, it’s far better just to join Long and his companions on our trails.

"It's just the way the good Lord painted them" says Jim Long of his beloved Clydesdales Tom & Jerry's uniquely coloured legs

Meet Nova Tobin, (above) the shining star who rode our mountain this month, acting as a perfect example of why we celebrate World Snow Day.

If you can carve your own run before you are tall

enough to reach your mom’s waist, you are exactly the type of person this new global day of celebration is intended to attract.

Conjured up by the International Ski Federation to begin in 2012, World Snow Day saw 435 organizers in 39 countries stage unique events this year to bring children and their families into a fun, friendly environ-ment to celebrate a healthy, active lifestyle in the snow.

At Norway’s Apen Bakke, this meant 120,000 people were skiing and snowboard-ing for free while in Iceland, “feel like a champion day” saw 250 kids playing in the

glorious fl uffy white powder in conjunction with the ladies’ FIS Alpine World Cup races.

Offi cially marked on Jan. 20, World Snow Day follows on the heels of the SnowKidz campaign, which encouraged FIS Member National Ski Associations to promote snow sports. Adding World Snow Day takes the campaign outside the FIS Member Nations to attract any country that has snow and wants to encourage physical activity.

“What we saw on the 2nd World Snow Day is nothing short of spectacular. The dedication and creativity of the local organizers has been

outstanding and our sincere congrat-ulations go to all of them,” said FIS president Gian Franco Kasper.

Altogether 300,000 people around the world took place in World Snow Day events, meaning little people like Blake Thompson (above), not yet two and already on skis on Big White, will have plenty of

playmates to join him as he grows into a winter sports enthusiast.

Where will you be next January as the celebration hits its stride in year three? We have a suggestion. Two words. First word: The size of this hill. Second word: the colour of that gleaming dusting of winter fun the entire world is celebrating.

Fluffy do can now enjoy bounding through the snow with a little backup plan.

For the fi rst time, Big White is of-fering up ski passes for the family pet, complete with pup’s name and owner’s phone number. The fi rst pho-tos were taken on Jan. 26 and dogs like Moby (left) are now all sporting the little cards.

Anyone who has met the handsome fellow for even a moment can attest he enjoys a good romp in the cold; snow has a way of making all of us get a little carried away from time to time.

The pass adds just one more backup plan to ensure getting carried away doesn’t end in disaster and the fi rst dog in line was Yoho the St. Bernard (above). The breed is known for rescues, afterall.

Anyone who would like a free Dog Pass for a furry best friend is welcome to talk to the tickets desk in the Village Centre Mall. Alternatively, one can email a photo to [email protected] and include a name and contact phone number.

Shaylene Ouellette will always remember the day her fi ancé, An-drew Raisanen got down on one knee in the snow, a blustery wind whipping around them, to ask her the big question.

And should she ever forget, there’s a video.

So well planned was Raisanen’s proposal, he managed to bring a group of their friends along to mark the occasion, and fi lm the shock on her face as she turned back to check

that he was taking pictures of the view and found him on one knee with her ring waiting.

“He told me that we were going out with two other couples and their children for a ski weekend. It just seemed like something we would do,” said Ouellette, whose time off falls mid-week, bringing them to their destination of choice on Thurs-day, Jan. 17.

In fact, it took a good deal of planning, a couple of drinks over

lunch (for courage) and a trip back to their condo to make sure the cam-eraman had his good equipment in hand when Raisanen fi nally picked the spot.

“I wanted to be at the top of the mountain with as much background as you could see,” he said. “It was just the perfect day, you could see all the mountains, so I just wanted to be up high.”

Ouellette and Raisanen are high school sweethearts who managed

to capture the fl ame a second time after a cross-country move forced them apart.

The pair started dating while still in Grade 8, attending George Elliott Secondary School in Lake Country.

Ouellette then left the Okana-gan Valley, moving to Lethbridge, Alberta, and did not return for eight years. Nevertheless, she kept in touch with Raisanen as they graduated high school and moved on to adult life. And after another long-term re-

“I think I did think we would maybe get back together one day. I don’t know if he did, but I kept in touch just to check in and see how he was doing,” she said.

Virtually the day she arrived back in town, the pair were back together.

And fi ve-and-a-half years later, they’re now getting ready for a walk to the altar and a life where they’ll never be too far apart again.

“I’m kind of in shock of the whole thing,” said Ouellette. “I just wasn’t expecting it.”

Aside from the big proposal, the day was also Ouellette’s fi rst time making it up the T-bar lift and, as the weather changed, she felt she wasn’t going to be able to make

the trek even one more time. So he picked his moment wisely.

The bride-to-be hasn’t seen the video, but has heard it’s a little tough to hear what’s happening with the wind sweeping past their heads.

“You can see the body language and that I think speaks louder than words,” she said, adding “I think I asked him to pinch me at one point.”

It will likely be a couple of years before there is a Ouellette and Rai-sanen wedding. For now, this is a big enough step to keep the couple on their toes.

“We’ve been together for almost six years and I kind of just felt it was time,” said Raisanen. “It was a really special day for both of us, so I’m glad it went well and everyone managed to keep the secret.”

Christopher Thomas didn’t run away with the circus, though a monstrously good resumé brought the circus to him.

Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario—the same place his boss, 6 Degrees Bistro Restaurant owner John Mooney is from—Thomas was in the kitchen cooking with his grandmother right from the age of 16.

“I come from a big background of foodies. My dad’s a pretty good cook. My brother is a chef. I’ve got a cousin who is a chef as well,” said Thomas.

Like any good tradesperson, he started at the bottom, scrubbing in the dish pit and working his way into a respectable career he now thoroughly enjoys.

Then one day, while working for the Santa Barbara Catering Com-pany at The Farm at South Moun-tain, he got the call.

Cirque du Soleil had seen his resume posted on the online job board Workopolis and offered him a life under the big top working with the show Quidam, pioneering new cities for the acrobatic circus to add to their list of hot spots.

“Basically, I was working from scratch. I would have to crack the language barrier, source out food

that would be acceptable for these very finicky performers,” he said. “…With the big tent there’s a show on every continent at any given time and that’s 120 performers, with meals twice a day.”

Moving from La Joya, California to Long Beach to Philadelphia, Cin-cinnati to St. Louis, Dubia, Shang-hai, Seoul and Guadalajara, one needs to develop a transition plan.Thomas soon figured out ways to trade dress rehearsal tickets for top chefs’ knowledge of go-to vendors.

The evidence of his success is in the culinary creations at 6 Degrees.

“When you look at the menu, you might think there’s a bit of an identity crisis there, but 99 per cent of the dishes that are on it are there because I’ve been taught by the best or I’ve seen it done,” said Thomas.

He learned to make tuna tar-tare in Japan and proper braised barbecue in Phoenix. This year, the menu is focused on Classic Ital-ian and Mediterranean influences, thanks to a trip he took to the re-gion with his girlfriend. During his four months off this summer, he will do a coast to coast adventure to see what Canada has to offer and it’s likely to add a few more new flavours to his kitchen’s offering in 2014.

Global flair

for BigWhite fareChef Christopher Thomas has cooked in the polar bear capital of the world and

the arid plains of Arizona, but his taste for global cuisine comes from working under the big top

For now, his biggest recom-mendation is to book a reservation before heading to 6 Degrees for din-

ner; the establishment fills to the gills each night and seats only 30 people.

White dinners may be sweeping the globe, bringing foodies to tables in their fi nest whites for culinary fl ash mob-esque picnics, but the

Heading to the hill on the very fi rst weekend in February, bartend-ers from across British Columbia got their chance to compete with one of

Director of Snow Sports Josh Fos-ter served as a judge alongside Rod Butters of RauDZ (one of Kelowna’s top eateries), PR gal Allison Markin, of All She Wrote, and Casey Wilson representing Absolut.

Over 200 people managed to make it out for the mixology magic,

The runners up included Gez McAlpine and Keenan Hood of Keefer Bar in Vancouver, who fi nished sec-ond and fourth respectively. Justin Darnes from George Lounge in Van-couver took third place.

World class surfer

Barton Lynch was spotted riding the Big White wave on the hill last month.

Lynch was named the As-sociation of Surfing Profes-sionals World Surfing Cham-pion in 1988 and co-hosted an Australian television surf show. He was also inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame in 1998 and the country’s sports hall of fame in 2000.

One look at him carv-ing down the mountain and it’s pretty clear there’s a few transferable skills in the mix.

Australia Day on the hill brought out the VegeMite…

What poutine is to French Canadians and peanut butter to many a mom in the Okanagan Valley

our favourite friends down under see in this yeast

extract spread.

Reputedly the best cure for a hangover, it was originally used to fl avour soups and gravies as it’s as salty as it gets.Thankfully, our annual infl ux of Aussies do not suffer from this affl iction. Warm, friendly and always lots of fun, we joined them in a Big White Australia Day celebra-tion each year.

Australia Day is the offi cial national day of the country and celebrated annually on Jan. 26 to commemorate the arrival of the First Fleet at Syd-ney Cove, New South Wales in 1788. The First Fleet consisted of 11 ships sent by the British Admiralty from England to establish a pe-nal colony.Centuries later we celebrate this fun-fi lled country as the home of koala bears and surfi ng, UGG boots and the fantastic Sydney Opera house. And many a Big White employee!Australia is one of the main countries where our staff come from, and we frequently see oth-ers from New Zealand, the U.K., France, Japan, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
