It is a tradition on the first Sun-day of Lent to use the story of Jesus spending 40 days in the desert fasting and praying before is begins his public ministry in Jerusalem, and being tempted by Satan. In today’s account Jesus is tempted to put is trust in food, in power as ruler of the kingdoms of the world, and feats of daring throwing himself off the top of the Temple in Jerusalem. To each of these tempta-tions Jesus pushes back and refuses to be tempted into sin by the devil. Jesus knows that the greatest sin to make one self-important by replacing God at the center of one’s life with something that only lasts temporarily while on earth, food, power, glory. Jesus opts for a higher goal that is about bringing God’s plan of redemption for the world. And he was to do this through his suffering, death, and resurrection. As we begin the Season of Lent let us acknowledge that sin is a part of our lives and not forget the hor-rible things we humans do to each oth-er in acts of racism, discrimination, and sexual exploitation and abuse. At the same time in being aware of our sinfulness, we remember that God’s grace offers us the key to overcoming our sin. A certain way to increase God’s grace in us is to develop a healthy daily prayer routine, searching the internet for a daily scripture read-ing and Catholic meditation or reflec-tion on Lent, but above searching for opportunities to help a neighbor, friend, or family member in their need. Committing to strengthening our com-munal and private prayer during these 40 days will not make this the easiest Lent; only the most fruitful.

Fr. Bill

On Ash Wednesday we begin the Season of Lent being signed

with ashes on our forehead with the formula “Repent, and believe in the Gospel,” why does the church use this ritual to begin the season?

As you know the Church has 7 Sacraments but in addition has what are called sacramentals among them the rosary, scapulars, holy water, blessing of persons, meals, and objects: candles, palms, and ashes. The ashes we use were made from what was once the green branches of last Palm Sunday (the church has been into recycling way before anyone else). In ancient cultures, ashes were used as a sign of mourning, a symbolic acknowledgement the fires of life had left not only the one who had died but also those who were left to grieve. And of course the legend of the phoenix rising from the ashes of its prede-cessor is an ancient symbol of resurrection.

The signing with the dry ashes is meant to show each of us that we are sinners and because of our sins we are not as close to God was we could be. The season of Lent has a double focus of baptism and penance. We who are baptized are to prepare for the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter through prayer, fasting, and works of charity.

The other groups that Lent focus’ on is the Catechumens those who are in the final stage of preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism and the Candidates those to be Received in to Full Communion into the Church at Easter. Accordingly today the Rite of Election is being held at various churches throughout the archdiocese. The final ritual prep-aration called the Scrutines is celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sun-day’s of Lent. I like to think that on this 1st Sunday of Lent the assembly is closing ranks around the Elect and the Candidates.

One more thing, remember that the prayer of the Church is al-ways biblical that is to say expressed in the language, images, and symbols of scripture. If the bible contains the divine revelation to us, it is also the inspiration for our response to God and thus the pattern and context of our prayer, praise, and adoration. For example, thou-sands of year have passed since the psalms were composed; yet when we need to express repentance we still find the only adequate expression in Psalm 51which begins “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” Every imaginable situation we manage to ourselves into from the overwhelming joy of God’s presence to the abysmal despair of our exile, sin, and alienation has found its perfect expression in the Book of Psalms. A good way to prepare for Sunday Eucharist is to read the scripture readings before coming to Mass (the references are printed in the bulletin and posted on the website).
