The origin of Valentine’s Day

• It all started in Rome around the year 269AD. Emperor Claudius (Claudius the cruel) as he was called was having trouble getting young men to join his army. He believed that the young men didn’t want to join the army because they were busy taking care of their loved ones. So guess what he did…

No dating, join the army

• He decided to stop all young couples’ engagements and wedding plans in Rome. Any young men who tried to get involved in courtship, dating, marriage proposals were therefore breaking the law…What a bad time for lovers!?

Stubborn Valentine & Marius

• Two stubborn guys: Valentine ( a priest) and his friend Marius decided to disobey emperor Claudius. They performed marriage ceremonies for young couples secretly.

• What a risk!? • Oh no. What a sacrifice

for love!?

In Jail

• No surprise, Valentine and his friend Marius were soon caught and thrown in jail. Their punishment was going to be terrible in order to serve as a lesson to all other persons who wanted to continue acting against the emperor’s instructions.

Love always wins

• For punishment, the two stubborn guys were going to be beaten to death in public and then their heads cut off. Too bad Claudius! Just for supporting LOVE?

Love Rules the World

Love in jail

• While in prison waiting for death Valentine fell in love with a girl who was visiting him regularly. Before his death on February 14th he wrote a love letter to the girl and signed at the end of the letter: “From your Valentine.”

That’s why we celebrate February 14th.

• In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14th to honour Valentine who now became considered as a Saint. Hence the name Saint Valentine’s Day. From then until this day, February 14th has been celebrated in all the continents of the world. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas.
