The Department of Modern Languages, in the spirit of the university’s international mission, presents its annual

summer study abroad trip. This year’s study abroad program will be in Sevilla, Spain! True knowledge and

mastery of a foreign language implies a process of acculturation. Adapting to another culture is not only a

matter of language proficiency; it is also a living experience that transforms the individual. By traveling abroad

and living with a local family, Missouri Southern students will not only acquire the language skills necessary to

thrive in a foreign environment, but will also see the world around them from an entire different perspective.

Seville, located in the south of Spain, is the capital of Andalusia and

one of the largest Spanish cities with over 700,000 inhabitants.

Hometown to emperors Trajan and Hadrian, the passage of various

civilizations, especially Romans, Moors, and Christians during the

Discovery of America, has provided Seville with a distinct personality

thanks to its numerous and well preserved historical sites.

The Guadalquivir River, which flows through heart the city, helps

visitors to find their way around Seville and provides them with

beautiful green areas to have a drink, lie down in the grass, and relax.

Also, the city’s nightlife thrives all year round, with plenty of bars and

restaurants full of people, typically in outdoor patios.

The city provides a great public

transportation system that includes

a reliable and fast bus network,

tramway, subway, taxis, and the

city’s bicycle program. The public

system is greatly used by both

locals and visitors. As well, the San

Pablo airport connects the city with

some major European cities, such

as London and Paris, among others.

Climate-wise, Sevilla’s daily

average temperature during the

month of June is 77 °F.

You can earn three hours of college credit with Missouri Southern by taking Spanish Study Abroad (SPAN

399). You will need to register for this class during regular summer enrollment in April, 2018. The course will

meet entirely during the dates of the program. This course will not fulfill any portion of the foreign language

requirement for students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, but it will count as upper division credits and as an

elective for the Spanish minor or major. This course will also meet the immersion requirement for Spanish

majors and Honors’ students.
