February 16, 2020 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Please remember the Church and School in your will.

Dear Friends: A little more than a week ago, on Feb. 7th, our Skagit Valley Catholic Churches’ 2020 pilgrimage group returned from the Holy Land. Fifty-three pilgrims from throughout the Skagit Valley and beyond spent 12 days visiting places where our Lord walked and where he revealed God’s love and light to our world. It was a wonderful journey! We are in the process of planning a gathering for pilgrims and for all Valley parishioners who want to share this experience. In the meantime, included here are a few photos of our trip. In Christ, Fr. Tom

WORD OF LIFE

“Prayer is the foundation of all that we do in defense of human life. Our efforts—whether educational, pastoral, or legislative—will be less than fully fruitful if we do not change hearts and if we do not ourselves overcome our own spiritual blindness. Only with prayer—prayer that storms the heavens for justice and mercy, prayer that cleanses our hearts and our souls—will the culture of death that surrounds us today be replaced with a culture of life.” “Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Our Mission As the Catholic Community in the Skagit Valley, working with others, we address the problem of hunger by coordinating volunteers, food and monetary resources and ensuring their efficient distribution, without discrimination of any kind. Our Vision God’s love is known to all in the Skagit Valley because no one goes hungry. Our vision is fulfilled in part by the generous contributions of our parish communities of St. Charles, Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception. Thank you for your continued support.

Prayer For the Hungry Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts: The gift of food, for us and for others; Of generosity, that when we have plenty None should go hungry the whole world over; The gift of hearts that grow in humility and compassion For each of your children who suffers misfortune; The gift of your love that extends our reach, and would not deny your gifts to another. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen

Our Values As the Catholic Community in the Skagit Valley we unite the efforts of St. Charles, Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception parishes. We remain a Catholic organization in union with the Archbishop of Seattle and the Pastor of the Skagit Valley Catholic Parishes. Working with other Catholic organizations and parishes in Western Washington and collaborating with local and regional organizations . We address the problem of hunger in our community.

Flu Season and Mass in the Skagit Valley This is the peak of flu season and it is important that we do everything we can to minimize the risk for our brothers and sisters with compromised or weak immune systems. If you are suffering from the flu or a serious cold, please stay home and get better; the Church recognizes sickness as a valid reason to miss Mass. Please minimize skin to skin contact, avoiding shaking hands at the Sign of Peace and holding hands during the Our Father. Finally, if there is any likelihood of infection, please refrain from receiving the Precious Blood for the sake of all who will share that cup; the doctrine of concomitance assures us that when we receive Christ under either species, in this case his Most Holy Body, we have received the whole Christ: body, blood, soul, and divinity. Fr. Tom

Padre Tom

FEBRUARY MINISTRY: Extraordinary Minister: Georgia Lang Lectors: Yvonne Eagleburger / Jan Brovan Church Housekeeping: FINANCIAL STRUGGLE: Often during these winter months, our parishioners are unable to attend Mass-along with visitors. Those missed Saturdays results in a financial shortfall to meet expenses. Recently, we had our 1992 furnace quit. So, another expense was made to have it serviced. Please check your unused personal purple Contribution envelopes that did not make it to church to see if you can help us catch up on expenses. VOLUNTEERS: Yes, the appeal for light housekeeping of the church along with hosting the 2nd Saturday Hospitality Social welcomes your support. Pick your month and sign-up on the sheet in the vestibule. Thanks!
