Objective

I can identify target audiences and evaluate how persuasive techniques in media seek to target certain audiences.

Warm Up:

Copy the date and objective into your notes. Think about the types of commercials that you see on different channels. How do commercials differ based on the channel that you are watching? Why are they different?

a specific population or group of people an advertiser hopes to persuade.

demographics

the characteristics a group of people have in common. Advertisers study this data to research the interests, activities and spending habits of a target audience and then develop products, packaging and ads that are designed to appeal to that audience.

Turn to pg. 966 in your Literature book and read the paragraph entitled "How far will we go to improve ourselves?" Then discuss your thoughts in your groups.

public service announcement

a non-commercial media or print advertisement that seeks to generate public awareness of a social issue,

such as safety, health or education. They are informational and educational, but also persuasive - intended to bring about change in people's attitudes

or behaviors.

So now turn to pg. 348 in your IR book.

A PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES: What claim, or message, can you infer from this section of the script? Record your answer in the chart on pg. 348.

B PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES: Public service ads often show situations that most people can identify with. Reread the Video description on this page. Do you think this sequence will be effective with television viewers? Explain.

C PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES: Reread the Audio script on this page. Circle the statement that makes the logical appeal about nutrition, and underline the facts and evidence used to support the logical appeal.

D PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES: Underline the emotional appeals to persuade viewers used on the Video and Audio sections of the script.

PAUSE AND REFLECT: What specific group of people does the ad seek to persuade, and how do you know?
