Reflection on Today’s Readings:

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

7th Sunday In Ordinary Time - Jesus is the Perfect Steward — watching carefully over all who have been entrusted to Him by the Father and then sending them all out

into the world in service. May I similarly protect and wisely use the gifts entrusted to me!

Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat., Feb. 25th & Sun., Feb. 26th, 2012 - First Sunday of Lent!

We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday:

Reading 1 Reading 2 Gospel: Gn 9:8-15 (23B) 1 Pt 3:18-22 Mk 1:12-15

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310- 670-2243.

FOCUS: The mercy of God brings healing and peace through forgiveness of our sins - God is merciful and desires to pour forth this mercy upon our lives. We only need to come to Him through His Son Jesus. We know that Jesus healed body, mind and soul as He forgave sins. He has empowered and commanded the Church to continue this ministry of healing and forgiveness. We only need to say Yes to His offer. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, despite their sins, God assures the people of His love, and forgives and forgets their offenses. The second reading reminds us that the fidelity of God, which is seen in His Son Jesus, is to be seen in Christ’s followers, as well. In the Gospel, people bring a man to Jesus for healing. Jesus not only heals him, but also forgives his sins.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

Ë To receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospital-ized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243. _ Please pray for those who have died, especially Stefina Sokol, (stepmother of Lou Rader), that they may rest in peace.

Dear Parishioners, This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and we begin the Holy Season of Lent in preparation for the great

events of our redemption—the Dying and Rising of Jesus. On Holy Saturday we will all have the joy of renewing our Baptism promises. Lent is a sort of spiritual retreat, a time for self-control, a time for reconciling our hearts so that our baptismal promises can be renewed in a true spirit of faith and hope. Don’t forget about the Fast and Abstinence during Lent. Ash Wednesday is a fast day—no meat! Fridays too, are days of abstaining from meat. Also today is the day for MAKING Lenten resolutions. Wednesdays—Simple Soup? Fridays—Stations of the Cross? Also thanks to all who contributed pledges to Together in Mission. God Bless you! Devotedly, Father Gabe

Ministry sends us beyond the parish…

FACT OF LIFE Christ's Communion in Suffering [Pope] Benedict XVI says that Jesus' prayer on the cross -- "My God, my God, why have you abandoned

me?" -- is a reminder that in prayer, we must also move beyond our own problems and present to God the needs and sufferings of others. . . . The prayer that Jesus voices is the beginning of Psalm 22. . . . "The psalmist speaks of a 'cry' in order to express all the suffering of his prayer before a seemingly absent God: In extreme anguish, prayer becomes a cry," Benedict XVI reflected. "And this also happens in our relationship with the Lord: When faced with the most difficult and painful situations, when it seems that God is not listening, we need not fear entrusting to Him the entire weight of what we carry in our hearts; we need not fear crying out to Him in our suffering; we must be convinced that God is near, even when He appears to be silent. [Jesus] is praying the psalm in the awareness that God the Father is present, even in this hour when He feels the human drama of death." (Pope Benedict's General Audience, February 8, 2012). Prayer for Life: O Loving God, May Your Holy Spirit enable us to walk humbly in Your presence and may You be pleased to restore America so that a generation not yet born may praise you. In the name of Christ Jesus, who has done great things for us, Amen.

LENTEN RESOURCES - Care for Creation Lenten Calendar: The Archdiocese of Washington’s (DC) Environmental Outreach Committee offers, for the third straight year, their Caring for Creation Lenten Calendar. You are also encouraged to take a look at the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center’s Lenten program resources called Lent 4.5: Christian Simplicity. Lent 4.5 takes advantage of people's desire to do something more for Lent: encouraging participants to pray and learn about ways to protect God's creation, embrace Gospel justice, and nurture their own spirituality. The seven-week Lenten program provides a new approach to the traditional Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Check out the video (scroll down to bottom of their website: http://www.earthandspiritcenter.org/lent45/) explaining the program. Visit also: catholicclimatecovenant.org.

LENT 2012 Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which falls on Wed., February 22nd, this year. The Catholic Community around the world follows these general regulations during Lent. ABSTINENCE – Is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE – In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

Ministry in Community …

Internet Spammers Target Kids, Too - Does your child know what to do when he or she gets an e-mail from an unknown person? If you are

allowing your children to communicate with others online, be aware that they will be exposed to spam. The easiest way to avoid spam is to make sure that your children do not give out their personal information or e-mail address to anyone they do not know. Adjust the security settings on their e-mail account to filter or block unwanted messages. Encourage your children to delete any messages they get from anyone they don’t know. Even when your children get e-mail or instant messages from people they know, make sure that they scan every-thing they are downloading for viruses first. You can do this by making sure that you have your antivirus software up to date. For more information, please visit: www.netsmartz.org/safety/safetytips.htm. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Living Faith for Kids… It is I, I who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more.

- Isaiah 43:25 When two people have an argument, sometimes one of them will apologize and give the other some flowers or a box of candy. If you park your car in the wrong spot, you may have to pay a fine to the city to be forgiven. God does not forgive our sins because we pay

a fine or give a gift. Rather, God forgives just because that’s the way God is. Through the Sacrament of Confession, God has given us a way to ask for forgiveness and receive it. Thanks be to God!
