As we embark on a new season, I am filled with delight when I see how we have grown over the last several years. The face of dentistry is changing and we are changing along with it. As always, the success of every season relies heavily on the participation of our members and it’s exciting to see the involvement of our colleagues, especially from the next generation of doctors. One new addition that has encouraged participation is that of our official Lee County Dental Society Facebook group which members can utilize to get the latest information on the happenings within our society. Please make sure to join! With that being said, there is always room for growth as we focus on new membership. Should you know any local dentist who would be an added asset to our group and welcome the benefits of being a member, please reach out to our Membership Chair Dr. Nicole Rasmussen or our Executive Director, Cinda Collmer. Our first event of the season is our customary Membership Social. Existing and prospective members, along with their spouses, are invited to join us for an evening of good food and good company as we kick off a fabulous year. It will be held at the FineMark National Bank and Trust on September 19th. Also, in lieu of our traditional formal holiday dinner party, we will be hosting a holiday social emulating an open house with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It will be our best holiday event yet! The season continues with an eclectic and comprehensive schedule of speakers which will be informative and engaging. This does include our biennium requirement of Medical Errors/Domestic Violence which is scheduled for January 16, 2020. A big thank you to our Vice President, Dr. Peter Gostout, for his hard work in putting together a great schedule for this year. Being in the dental field grants us the fortune of many opportunities, but it is always important to remember to give back. Project Dentists’ Care is a wonderful chance to do just that. Project Dentists’ Care, led by Dr. Bill Truax, is a clinic that provides free dental care to the underserved in Lee County. The clinic is open on Wednesday evenings, Friday mornings and Saturday mornings and is always looking for volunteers and donations. Please keep them in mind and make sure to sign up at least once (if not more!) this season. Other opportunities to give back include Give Kids a Smile Day and Mission of Mercy. Be on the lookout for further information regarding these events and more throughout the year. I encourage all members, old and new, to make the most of this season. Attend meetings, get involved, volunteer. You only get out of it whatever you put in. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Kindest Regards, Andrea WE ARE JUST A CLICK AWAY, JOIN OUR GROUP TODAY! When Is the Time to Think About Exiting Your Practice? When Is the Time to Think About Exiting Your Practice? If you own a practice, chances are your business is your “golden goose.” It may be your largest asset, and it is the primary source of cash flow for you, your family and your employees. You’ve spent a long time building it to this point. What happens when you want to move on to the next stage in your life?

There is a 100% certainty that you will leave your business. Unfortunately, many business owners don’t plan for it, and there is no dress rehearsal. Why is it so difficult? It may represent the largest transaction of your life. It

involves several advisors—accountants, attorneys, business brokers, financial advisors, business consultants—each

offering their own advice in their narrow area of expertise.

There is anxiety—not only about the sale of the business but about what the owner will do with their life when they no longer have to work. I’ll never forget the way one dentist

friend put it after the sale of his practice, “I’m still mourning the death of my career.”So, what does the path to success look like? It should start, at a minimum, 3 years before the planned exit, preferably longer. It starts with determining the goals of the business owner, then setting out to protect the practice and grow

the business to realize the full value of your life’s work. The planning process is not just about how to get out, but about how to maximize the value of the practice to the outgoing and incoming owners.

There are strategies available to sell to insiders (an associate or existing partner), sell to outsiders (another dentist or dental service organization), or even to keep the practice until death (the death of the dentist or the death of the practice). Within those strategies are ways to increase the value of the business, minimize risk to the outgoing owner, and minimize tax liability for the transition.

If you are interested in more information about planning for business exit, please feel welcome to contact me at 239-246-8928 or email [email protected].

Update from Cape Coral Technical College Dental Assisting Program

Christy Bessette CDA EFDA CRDH BHSDental Assisting Program Director

Our dental assisting program has had a very busy year! The students have been very busy not only with the didactic and laboratory sessions on campus, but also they were given many opportunities to participate in several volunteer activities in the community. These included Dentistry From the Heart, Dental Health Month and Career Day at local elementary and high schools.

The January class has been working hard and was able to have some hands on practice at Project Dentists Care. The students had the opportunity to work alongside the great

dentists that volunteer their time to help patients that may not have access to care elsewhere. This is a great learning experience. They will be returning from summer break and working hard to prepare for their internship in October.

On June 13, 2019, our fourth class graduated from the Dental Assisting program. The seven students successfully completed the program and now have EFDA and radiology certification. We are very happy to say that three of those students accepted job offers prior to graduation!

The students also sat for their Certified Dental Assistant Exam(CDA) through the Dental Assisting National Board.

There will be twelve new students that will enter the program July 26, 2019.

Contributing to healthy teeth and a beautiful smile is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a dental professional. The dental team works together to help patients understand the im-portance of good oral health. The pathway to careers in dental education can be quite rigorous for students. Hodges University is addressing that challenge with its Pre-Dental Education focused degree. This is the latest example of laser-focused workforce initiatives at Hodges University. Students earn an associate’s degree while satisfying the courses required for admission to dental education programs to become a dentist, a dental hygienist, or a dental assistant. “We know that there is a continued de-mand for well-prepared dental professionals, so the creation of a focused plan of study is our first step in helping to fulfill those needs,” said Dr. Marie Collins, a Registered Dental Hygienist who serves as the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Hodg-

es University. “We were grateful to have attended a recent Lee County Dental Society Executive Council Meeting to discuss plans

and to begin a collaborative, working relationship with the

    Society and Hodges University.”

In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for pro-fessionals in the dental field will continue to grow at an above-av-erage rate through the year 2026. Demand for Dental Hygienists, for example, is expected to grow 20 percent. With a growth rate of 19 percent, there is nearly an equal demand for Dental Assistants. “With Hodges University taking steps to help us prepare our next generation of dental providers for South-west Florida, we are confident that we can continue to close the employment gaps for our region,” said Dr. William Truax, Society Member and President, Project Dentists Care of SWFL. “The relationship between

good dental health and good overall health is undeniable.”

The pre-dental education focus at Hodges University includes science courses, like biology, anatomy and physiology, chemis-try and microbiology. Complementing the

degree are classes in sociology, psychology, nutrition, human growth and development, algebra, statistical methods, and a choice of elective courses.

“This two-year degree pro-vides a well-rounded foun-dation in health sciences and general education, and creates a pathway for students to the various levels of dental careers. It will help prepare students for the competitive application process with focus on the

courses specifically needed for admission,” said Dr. Collins. To learn more about the pre-dental educa-tion focused degree at Hodges University, visit Pathways.Hodges.edu or email [email protected].
