    MULTI-DISCIPLINARY EXCHANGE: BODY AND SPACE 2-7 March10am – 3pm DanceHouse€50 (members); €80 (non-members)Public Presentation: Sat 7 March, 4pm (freeadmission)

As the first in our second series of multi-disciplinaryworkshops, Dance Ireland presents Body and Spacewith German choreographer Hayo David.

This workshop builds on last year’s exchange, whenDavid worked with a mixed group of dance artistsand architecture students. While the focus will beagain on the connections between body/space/time,it will expand to include the virtual space in relationto the body and architecture that surrounds it.

This workshop is open to dancers, choreographers aswell as architecture students and experts with aparticular interest in engaging in the working processbut all participants should be prepared to workphysically.

Hayo David has been working on the theme ‘bodyand space’ for the last 15 years, primarily through hiswork as a dancer and artistic assistant of FredericFlamand, working alongside some of the mostoutstanding architects of our time.

The multidisciplinary exchanges are seen as theopportunity to link practice to theoretical debate: anarena where dance practice intersects with issues ofaesthetics, philosophy, sociology; a vehicle of debateand sharing between dance artists and experts inother fields which would help eventually spark offnew inspirational and provocative approaches todance practice.

A public presentation is scheduled for Saturday 7

March at 4pm. This will be open to all and free ofcharge but booking is required.

Coming up! Second multi-disciplinary exchange:Body and Text – led by Jonathan Burrows andAdrian Heathfield - 30 March to 1 April.

Please note that workshop places are limited, soadvance booking is essential.

still, life is an exhibition that celebrates these uniqueartists and their contribution to cultural life in Ireland. The exhibition consists of 26 images of many of ourleading choreographers and dancers. Each imageexplores the narrative potential of stillrepresentations of dance. Shot in a series of evocativelocations around Dublin, the images were createdthrough a collaborative process of improvisation anddevising. Placed into the location, the artist is but oneof the elements making up the image, and not theentire focus of it. It is the interaction between artistand location that moves the attention away from thephysical aesthetic and towards a more emotive,narrative-driven interpretation.

Set in doorways, car parks, under bridges, behindwalls and trees, these are not only images of dance, but are snatched moments from some-body’s story.Set together, these individually compelling imagesform a bold visual record of a community of danceartists without whom Irish cultural life would besignificantly poorer.

still, life was created with the support of Dance Irelandand with the assistance of the Office of Public Works.

Jonathan Mitchell was born in England, and has livedin Dublin since 1999. He trained as a dancer at theRambert School, London. He has worked with manyof the leading UK and Irish companies, includingAdventures in Motion Pictures, CoisCéim, IMDT,Matthew Hawkins & Dancers, Rex Levitates andScottish Dance Theatre. He still occasionally teachesdance. Since 2005, Jonathan has been a professionalphotographer, specialising in fine-art portraiture anddance.

still, life will be formally opened by renowned UKdance photographer Chris Nash at DanceHouse on10 February at 5pm. All welcome to attend. Theexhibition will run until the end of the year.

STILL, LIFE A photographic study of 26 of Ireland’s modern dancepioneersPhotography by Jonathon Mitchell10 February onwardsDanceHouse

still, life is a photographic exhibition that throws lighton the secret history of modern dance in Ireland. Thevibrant, diverse dance community that exists todaywas built on the foundations laid by an extraordinarygroup of dance practitioners and artists. 20 years agothey were operating in a cultural vacuum, bereft ofany financial support from arts bodies, isolated fromtheir peers on the continent and with an audiencethat did not fully understand their art form. Throughtalent, dedication and perseverance they created acommunity that is today thriving and complex, andoccupies a position of cultural significance within theIrish arts scene.

In a brand new version of their hit show Boxes,CoisCéim Dance Theatre has transposed the originalharmony of the two-man show to today’sdisharmonious world where the ‘Celtic Tiger’ iscatnapping and global events impact on a local scale.

More revised than recycled, Boxes 2009 features newchoreography, a new set and new dancers - Broadwaytap-dancing legend Jason E. Barnard and double-time Critics’ Choice Winner for Outstanding Male, LeeClayden. The dancers (who were both in Dodgems atthis year’s Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival) playtwo factory workers who use their limitlessimagination and dexterity to create a magical worldamid stacks of cardboard boxes.

Boxes 2000 won massive acclaim when it premieredwinning over audiences and critics alike at the 2000Dublin Fringe Festival. Boxes 2009 is set in a darkerworld and the contrast of two races and cultures in apost-boom factory makes this a far more poignantshow.

With a pulsating sound score, whimsical animationand opulent design, Boxes 2009 is still a witty andheart-felt show that the whole family can enjoy butdrawing heavily on world events like 9/11, the Bushpresidency and the current economic crises, Boxes2009 demonstrates just how fragile our global houseof cardboard is.

CHOREOGRAPHY.NET STRIKES ACHORD Michelle Ni Dhalaigh www.choreograph.net

Choreography is all around us. Every day we navigateour way through our daily lives in a series ofchoreographed movements and actions. The chain ofreaction of biology from cellular movements in ourbrains to breathing, moving, thinking, dancing is all infocus on choreograph.net. Special areas of interestinclude: choreography as an aesthetics of change, state of dance, ecological thinking, ecology of mind, among many others.

Celebrating the proliferation of choreographeddetails in life is just one of the reasons to visitchoreograph.net. Choreograph.net, set up with helpfrom the Arts Council and Daghdha Dance Company, has progressed from being an online forum fordancers and choreographers, when it was set up in2001, to being an online journal. It is a living andbreathing, almost organic resource for those who areimmersed in where choreography is today and whereit will be tomorrow. The website now exists as anonline journal about how we recognise, cultivate andnegotiate a state of dance in human and other systems.

According to its creators, Davide Terlingo and MichaelKlien, the website is a resource with the desire tofacilitate a community of practise around a sense ofchoreography as a new and open metaphor.

The website has been re-launched as a journal underthe careful direction of Jeffrey Gormly as editor and isa now one year old. It represents a new resource fordancers, choreographers, artists, poets, students andanyone interested in the art of dance andchoreography in both a tangible and intangiblemanner. The website is made up of various pageswhich all combine to present a community mindedand vibrant dance community.

Elements of the website include a notice board, writing area, articles and an area for ‘Raw Thinking’.The ‘Raw Thinking’ stream is serenely laid out withcarefully chosen images where raw thoughts seemlike poetry.

The notice board is not just a practical resourceoffering a message board for dance companies, dancers and schools of dance to offer work, collaboration or even just friendship to each other. But rather seems to be a written expression of thecommunity spirit in dance and choreography today. The notice board offers jobs in New York, Catalonia aswell as Limerick.

The entire site is edited carefully to provideinspiration for those with an inherent interest in theart of dance. Editor Jeffrey Gormly is evident in thecareful placement of the elements of each page onthe website.

Thought provoking articles written by a host ofchoreographers, writers, dancers and theorists allcome together to engage the visitor. Articles byMichael Klien and Davide Terlingo among othersdevelop discussions on topics such as the connectionbetween choreography and the biological, social andpolitical worlds.

Human behaviour in all its forms is the source ofmuch of the discussion on the site. Articles presentedin an easy to use format are a source of ever-changinglinks between dance and sociology. We see the ideasof Anne Baring, Jules Cashford, Steve Valk and JeffreyGormly all come together to create a new lexicon ofthought and of interest for the dancing community. Itmerges the world of dance and choreography withthe worlds of writing, artistry, music and physics.

Writers are gathered in virtual form from variousfields of expertise including cultural theory, theology, social dreaming and cybernetics. It can prove a bitdaunting for the reader at first glance. However closerinspection reveals that there is an emerging themefrom the writings. That is: the choreography ofeverything.

If you are interested in writing or contributing tochoreograph.net please contact Jeffrey Gormly [email protected].

Key articles from the website will feature in DanceIreland News throughout 2009.
