Elementary NewsletterCan you believe that the
beginning of February marks thebeginning of the third quarter?
Report cards for the secondquarter will go home withelementary students on Friday,February 4th. Report card
conferences will be held on
Wednesday, February 9th.
Students will be dismissed at
11:30 on that day. All parentsare welcome to schedule a time
to meet with the teacher(s) of
their child(ren). Conferences
can be scheduled by callingChandra in the Elementary
Office at 497-6290.
February brings with it
many special days.
On February 2nd, Ground
hog Day will be celebrated. The
question of whether the groundhog will see his shadow is sureto be the "buzz" throughout thehalls. Let's hope that no shadow
is seen so that we can insure an
early spring!
On February 11th, the fourth
and fifth grade students willtravel to Titus Mountain for the
annual "Elementary Ski Day".
This day is provided to the
students through the generosityof the School Board, the Ski
Club advisors, and members of
the CCS Ski Club. It is sure to
be a wonderful day! If you havea child in fourth or fifth grade, please make sure that he/she hasa warm winter jacket, ski pants,
a hat, and gloves to wear whileon the trip. If your child is in
need of one of those things, please let his/her teacher know.
Although our sixth graders donot participate in the Elementary
Ski Day, some of them haveeagerly been participating in the
weekly Thursday night Ski Club
Trip to Titus Mountain. Ski Clubis available for students in
Grades 6-12.
On February 14th. studentswill celebrate one of their
favorite days of the year ~Valentine's Day. Be looking for
specific information about class
room parties from classroom
teachers. The students always
look forward to giving andreceiving valentines. If your
child chooses to exchangevalentines, please make sure that
he/she makes one for each child
in his/her class.
The 100th Day of Schoolwill be celebrated on February
14th, assuming there are no
snow days between now andthen. On that day, our youngerstudents will complete manyactivities with a "100th Day"theme. We always enjoy
looking at the beautiful 100thDay projects that our elementarystudents make.
President's Day is anotherimportant holiday in February. Many classroom teachers willhonor President's Day by
teaching lessons about past
presidents including GeorgeWashington and Abraham
Lincoln.
After all of February's specialevents, the students are sure to
want a break! Lucky for them, there is a week off beginning onFebruary 21st. Students will
return to school on Monday,February 28th.
The Character Education
Theme for February is
"Friendship". Mrs. Stumpfteaches the children about
friendship through the 2nd Steplessons that she conducts during
their weekly classes with her.
All of the children know how
important it is to be a good
friend to others. A specialthanks to parents for teachingtheir children at home about
being kind, polite, and courteousto others. What great friends we
have at CCS!
We now, or will soon, have a
new bulletin board display up in
the hallway of the elementary
entrance. Each student in gradesPreK-6 made a poster that
displays information aboutsomeone that he/she looks up to.
Each week, one poster from each
classroom will be displayed on
the bulletin board. Please take
the time to look at the beautiful
work that the students have
done.
If, in the near future, you
hear your child talking about allof the new books in the "Book
Room", please know that he/she
is not exaggerating! We have a
whole new "Book Room" that is
filled with books that the
children will read during theirreading times. It is very excitingfor us to have so many new
"leveled" books. Our students
really enjoy reading books at
their own level.
At playtime, students WILL
go outside whenever thetemperature is above 20 degrees.Unfortunately, many students arecoming to school unprepared togo outside. Although we do
have clothing at school that thechildren can borrow if they
forget, it is always so much
better when the students
remember to bring their own
things.
Thank you, as always, foryour help and your continued
support. It is appreciated!

Special ThanksBefore completely patting the holidays behind ns, we'd like
w\o send out a special thank yon to Santa for taking time fromf his bnsy schedule to visit the boys and girls at Chateaugay
Central School. Santa arrived in style on December 22nd
thanks to Mr. Roach and the Chateaugay Volunteer Fire
Department. After his arrival, Santa visited students in grades
PreK-2. All of the children were very excited to see him.
A special thank you also goes out to Mr.Walley and his
students for helping Santa both before and during Santa's visit.
Mr.Walley and his students helped by working with the
students in grades PreK-2 to make special holiday projects.
Please look at the picture collage on the next page of the
newsletter for some images from Santa's visit.
ATTENTION PARENTS AND STUDENTS
Following the holiday break, many students came back to school
excited about a new laptop computer, an Ipod, an Ipod Touch, a
Nintendo DS, a Nintendo PSP, or cell phone. Although we understandthis excitement, we require that students leave these things at home. Not
only are these technological wonders expensive, but they are also very
[distracting and have caused problems within and among classrooms. Itis our policy, if students are found with any of the above devices, to takethe device and to hold it in the Elementary Office until a parent is able to
come retrieve it. Please know that if there is a special reason or
circumstance for which your child needs to have his/her cell phone, you
may call Mrs. Fowler in the Elementary Office ahead of time to speak to
her regarding the situation. Thank you so much for your help with, and
understanding of, this policy.

Nutrition Education Series tips to cut back on added sugars
Cut back on buying foods and beverages with added sugars. If you don't buy them, your kidswon't get them very often. Eating too many sweet treats can contribute to tooth decay and overweight. So, it isimportant for kids, and adults, to limit eating sugary foods and drinks.
1 serve small portionsIt's not necessary to get rid of all sweets and desserts.
Instead, teach your child that a small amount of
sweets or a treat can go a long ways. Use smaller bowls,
plates, and utensils for your child to eat with. Children can
practice serving from small bowls as you help them.
skip the sodaSoda is high in calories and contains a lot of sugar.
£3 Skipthe store's soda or sweetened beverage aislecompletely. Remind your child that you'vealready picked out a juice together. Make
fresh fruit smoothies together by blendingfresh or frozen fruit with fat-free or low-fat
milk and yogurt or 100% juice.

3 use the check-out lane
that does not display candyMost grocery stores will have a candy-free check-out
lane to help moms out. Waiting in a store line makes it easyforchildren to ask for the candy or gum that is right in front oftheir faces to tempt them.
4 choose not to offer sweets as rewardsBy offering food as a reward for good behavior,
children learn to think that some foods are better
than other foods. Reward your child with kind words andcomforting hugs or non-food items, like stickers, to makethem feel special.
lit for d€ .Serve baked apples, pears, or
enjoy a fruit salad. Or, serve
yummy frozen juice bars (100% juice)as a healthy option instead of high-fat desserts
USDA
make food fun
Sugary foods that are marketed to kids are
advertised as "fun foods." Try making nutritiousfoods fun by preparing them with yourchild's help andbeing creative together. Make a smiley face with slicedbananas for eyes, raisins for a nose, and an orange slicefor a mouth. Or, cut fruit into fun and easy shapes withcookie cutters.
encourage children to invent new snacksMake your own trail mixes from «,
dry cereal, dried fruit, and nuts or .^seeds. Provide them with a table full of Jx,r,fresh and nutritious foods, and allow %, "'"'"'children to pick and choose what they <& .'"want in their "new" innovative snack.
8 name a food your child helps makeServe "Dawn's Salad" or "Peter's Sweet Potatoes"
for dinner. The food will be nutritious and your childwill be proud of the meal he or she helped create. They willalso be more willing to try new things if they get involved inmeal planning.
play with foodLet your child make towers out of whole-grain
crackers or make funny faces on plates withpieces of fruit.
if meals are not eaten, kids donot need 'extras'

Elementary Foreign
Language Lessons Jft©/&Each year, Juniors and Seniors from Mrs. Simonsen's
French Classes and Mrs. Swanston's Spanish Classes take time
to teach foreign language lessons to our elementary students.
This year, our elementary students received six lessons in
either French or Spanish. Among other things, students
learned the basics of the language such as the alphabet,
numbers, and colors. They also learned how to speak short
phrases.
The high school students did a wonderful job of preparing
and teaching their lessons and of keeping the students
engaged and involved. During their last lesson, the elementary
students were treated to a sample of a food that is popular in
France or Spain (dependent on the language being learned).
Thank you to all of the high school students who were
involved in teaching the lessons and to Mrs. Simonsen and
Mrs. Swanston for making the lessons possible.

Reading and Understanding Nonfiction Texts
The students in Mrs. Dumas' class just finished a unit on reading and understanding nonfiction texts. Oneimportant skill they learned is how to identify main ideas and details using "boxes and bullets". Thestudents worked with a partner to prepare a poster on a topic they read about. The partners then taughttheir classmates a lesson on the topic using boxes and bullets to summarize some main ideas that theylearned. The presentations and posters were very impressive!

Students Present Donation to Mission of Hope
Students from Mrs. Watson's Second Grade Classroom represented ChateaugayCentral School in presenting the hinds
collected by the students and staff, to support orphans at the North Country Mission of Hope facility in Nicaragua.
Students and staff collected donations during the holiday season to benefit the orphans they learned about at an assembly
in the Fall. Students learned that they can feed a hungry child for one day for only 25 cents! This sen-ice project was a great
learning experience for students. They learned about other parts of the world, about poverty and starvation, and most
importantly, about how they could make a real difference in another person's lite. These are qualities students are learning
in our Social Emotional Learning Curriculum with Mrs. Srumpf. Children from Chateaugay, NY were able to practice
understanding how other people feel—(the skill of empathy) see life from another person's perspective and ask themselves,
"What can I do to show that 1care about someone else, even if they are a stranger to me!" It was a joy to watch students
bring whatever amount of money they could to put in the collection jar. They showed such pride in helping other children,
like themselves in so many ways, except having theirbasic needs of food, shelter and clean water, and a family to support
them. This is a hard concept for CCS students to grasp, not knowing where or when youwill have your next meal, but such
a wonderful lesson. Our students tookgreat satisfaction in figuring out how many children theywould be able to feed with
the money they raised. Most encouraging, the students have notabandoned this project as the holiday spirit ofgivingended. They are still bringing pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and even dollars, because they have realized that they cancontinue to make a difference for other children.
"Students use the
skill ofempathy to
understand what
life is likefor
orphans at
Nicaragua's

Mrs. Watson's Second Grade Class presents a donation to Sr.
Debbie Blow, on behalf of CCS students and staff.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP NIGHT
In the beginning of November, CCS senior girls attended aGirls' Conference in Plattsburgh. There weremany subjects discussed that day including self-defense, violence against women, and the patterns ofdomestic violence. Toward the end of the day, students from SUNY Plattsburgh, along with theirprofessor, presented on Healthy Relationships. CCS students and staff were especially impressed by thisportion of the day. At the end of this discussion, Professor of Women Studies, Dr. Simona Sharoni, offered to bring her students to any school district, free of charge, to further discuss healthyrelationships.
So, on Wednesday, Feb. 16th, from 6-7:30 pm, Dr. Sharoni and her students will be at CCS for muchdiscussion on healthy relationships. The seminar is free of charge, and there will be some light snacksoffered. Students in grades 7-12 are invited, along with their parents. Groups will be split up into ayounger student group, an older student group and aseparate parent group; we hope that splitting upthegroups will allow forfree and open discussion. " '
We think this night will be educational, inspiring, and FUN, FUN, FUN I If you are astudent or aparentplease come to learn about what our kids face in the area of relationships and how to handle thisdelicate subject. If you have any questions please contact Donna Andre, Mary White or Amy jaggers at497-6611.
