“Paradise” gets to ParadiseBy Alice Adams Addison, Ph.D.
In February Alice completed two parts of her “bucket list” by traveling with the UCSB Gaucho Getaways Alumni Travel Program to the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) and Machu Picchu, Peru. Each was an awesome experience each in it’s own right. Combining the two countries took her from the 12,000 foot heights of Cusco, Peru and the 11,000 foot heights of Quito, Ecuador to locations on the equator. In Ecuador she saw icy glaciers on the volcanos, and at the equator saw creatures like black iguanas and blue-footed boobies in the heat of the Galapagos Islands at sea level. She snorkeled with colorful fish and sea tortoises. Culturally and linguistically she was able to use her Spanish, learned a few new words in Ecuadorian and Peruvian Spanish. (owl isn’t the mexican “tecolote”, it’s “buho”). She also began to learn Quechua from various natives in Peru.“Allianchu? = How are you?
In her sun protecting bonnet, Alice poses with the Paradise British Car Club newsletter on Feb 13, 2012, close to the equator, in the Galapagos Islands.
Here is Alice sharing the “Cruizing in Paradise” brochure at Las Baches Beach, Galapagos Islands on the equator.
One member of the Paradise Club has taken advertising our North Meets South event to new heights. In February Alice Addison took a trip of a life time to Ecuador and Peru.
“osuipaiki” = Thank you. Historically and architecturally, Alice explored the pre-Inca to Spanish conquistador influence which predominated in both Ecuador and especially in Peru, with Cusco as the Inca capital. The Spaniards never went to Machu Picchu, so it remains just as the Incas left it.

Our February event was hosted
by our club president, Larry
Long, who was a project
manager for the Thematic
Mapper instruct, a portion of the
Landsat Program, which is a
series of earth observing satellite
missions jointly managed
byNASA and the U.S.Geologic
Survey. These satellites first
“flew” in 1972 and continue to
the present day.
Larry provided a most
interesting explanation of how
these satellites work, even
including photos and visual
aides. After coffee and donuts
(donut provided by the Long’s!)
we drove to Los Olivos to look
at the images of earth from
space.
Thirteen cars then drove over
the scenic Foxen Canyon “wine
trail” to the art museum in Los
Olivos where the exhibit was
being held.
While these images were
designed to provide scientific
data useful in planting and
harvesting crops, among other
uses, the earth images “as art”
were beautiful and interesting
viewing.
After leaving the museum we
had a leisurely lunch at the Alisal
Golf course Restaurant and an
uneventful journey home. This
was a enjoyable and highly well
attended event.

THE GANG
Our March run to the Fabing-McKay-Spanne House was very well attended. There were 28 club members. (“Jim” brought the donuts)
It isn’t every day we all get to make a call from a British phone booth.
After an interesting tour of the 19th Century home we went for a traditional British lunch at Alfie’s
Al seems to have found
a new lady friend.

Feature Article from Hemmings Motor NewsJuly, 2005 - David Traver Adolphus
With so many different paint types available today, choosing the right kind of paint to refinish your old car or truck can be one of the most difficult decisions facing car owners. Do you choose the type of paint that is correct for your era-built car, or do you upgrade and go with a more durable urethane for a longer lasting finish? Choosing the correct paint type will not only affect the cost of the refinishing process, but it can have a long-term effect on your car's value. The varnishes that originally coated the earliest collector cars were direct descendants of furniture finishes used on horse-drawn wagons. While they could be applied with spray-gun technology developed in the 1800s, they required extensive hand finishing to develop lasting polish and regular maintenance to hold up for more than a year or two. A more modern lacquer finish was introduced in the 1920s that offered vastly improved drying times and, with much hand rubbing, a beautiful finish. These were single-stage systems, in that the paint was also the outer coating and carried both pigment and elements needed for a shine.Change in this arena has generally been glacial, with new technologies emerging over the course of decades. Today, almost all new vehicles are refinished with a non-glossing urethane basecoat followed by a catalyzed urethane clearcoat, these are the common multi-stage "2K" systems. Over the last 20 years or so, these complete "finish systems" from a number of manufacturers have become the generally accepted way to refinish a car.For those owners seeking a factory-correct restoration, these modern multi-stage urethanes are incorrect for nearly all collector cars. Compared to the old lacquers and enamels, urethanes are much too shiny-almost plastic in appearance due to the clearcoat-and don't have the same depth of finish that a lacquer finish has. They are also very dangerous for the average home hobbyist to use because they contain isocyanides; unless a paint mask with a fresh-air feed is used, the isocyanides-contained overspray will harden in your lungs and kill you. However, if you aren't interested in showing your old car on the national level, and plan on having a professional paint your car instead, then modern
urethanes are the way to go as they are far more durable than lacquer and acrylic enamel, hold up better to the acid rain and the sun's ultraviolet rays, and require less maintenance. But remember, a show judge will know the difference between this modern coating and something correct for the era.

Bugatti Veyron Super SportThe Bugatti Veyron Super Sport reached a Guinness World Records-certified top speed of 431 km/h or 268 mph. However, as Guinness notes, the cars shipped to customers are restricted to 258 mph — to protect the tires, which don’t hold up well at the higher speeds. The Veyron Super Sport has four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers; the 16-cylinder engine has a total of 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb.-ft. of torque. It is the fastest road car in production. The SSC Ultimate Aero held the previous Guinness record of 255.83 mph. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, depending on production details and foreign-exchange rates, will cost between $2.4 to $2.6 million.Curabitur labore
