Educating The Next Generation

How do I check my breasts – and how often? Once your breasts have developed, check them by looking and feeling. Do this every so often for the rest of your life.

There’s no particular way to check. Look at your breasts and feel them with any part of your hand or fingers. Check the whole breast, up to your neck and into your armpits.

If you’re over 50 (in England this will go down to 47 in the near future) and having mammograms under the NHS Breast Screening Programme, remember to check your breasts between screening appointments.

Men need to be breast aware too, as in the UK more than 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Possible symptoms of breast cancer include: • A lump in your breast or armpit • Nipple changes • Changes to the skin of your breast • Changes in the shape or size of your breast • Pain in your breast or armpit If you notice any of these symptoms, go and see your doctor immediately. It is important to get to know how your breasts look and feel normally, so that you’ll find it easier to spot something unusual. Get into the habit of checking your breasts regularly. Feel the whole of both breasts and your armpits. Does anything seem different? Look at your breasts in the mirror. Do they appear to have changed at all? If so, it is worth getting checked out. www.breastcancercare.org.uk www.breastcancercampaign.org Cornwall Breast Cancer Care Team

Clean out your greenhouse. Wash down the windows and benches and start sowing some vegetable seeds eg. cabbage, sprouts.Pressure wash or scrub paths, steps and paving.Spread manure or garden compost around the base of shrubs and on vegetable beds for the worms to pull down into the soil.Prune hydrangeas. At the very least cut o the deadheads but they can be cut back to new growth further down the branch. Hydrangeas will respond to quite severe pruning to rejuvenate them if they are rather leggy but you may lose this year’s owers.Lift and divide herbaceous perennials which are congested.Chit seed potatoes indoors in trays in a bright frost free position.

Plants for February:

Daphne bholua “Jacqueline Postill”

This small evergreen shrub owers its heart out at a quiet time of year with exquisite very fragrant owers which waft around your garden. It prefers a sunny spot but tolerates semi shade and can even be grown in a pot as it never grows very big.

Terminology The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be "shriven" before the start of Lent.

TRaditions Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: In many cultures, this means no meat, dairy, or eggs.

In Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand among Anglicans, Lutherans, some other Protestant denominations, including ethnic British communities, as well as Catholics, this day is also known as Pancake Day, as it is customary to eat pancakes as a dessert. In the United Kingdom, Shrove Tuesday is observed as a tradition.

In Newfoundland small tokens are frequently cooked in the pancakes. Children take delight in discovering the objects, which are intended to be divinatory. For example, the person who receives a coin will be wealthy; a nail that they will be (or marry) a carpenter.

Valentine's Day in TR11 14th February 2013

Folk Tales and Customs There are many folk tales and customs surrounding the celebration of Valentine’s Day in the UK. Today it is a more commercial venture than was seen in Britain in the Middle Ages when February 14th was believed to be the day birds paired up ready for the mating season. One of the first records of Valentine’s Day linked with romance was a poem by Chaucer in 1382. The poem celebrated the anniversary of – the 14-year old - the King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. And, the first Valentine was believed to be a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife whilst being held in the Tower of London, in 1415. In Wales carved wooden love spoons were given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and padlocks were favorite decorations on the spoons, symbolizing an 'unlocking’ of the heart. Valentine Cards The earliest known Valentine card was sent in 1477 in the form of a letter from Margery Brew to John Paston in Norfolk with the printed Valentine appearing in the late 18th century. The popularity of the sending and receiving cards grew alongside the improvement in postal services and methods of printing to the point in the 1830’s where postmen needed refreshments to help them with the unprecedented number of cards they had to deliver. Flowers The sending of flowers on Valentine's Day is reputed to be the busiest day of the year for florists. But there is a language associated with which flowers to send: Red roses declare true love, but a white rose means I Love You Not!

Yellow depicts jealousy with pink for innocent love. Red Tulips are a declaration of powerful love and Snowdrops bring hope.

So check first to see what the flowers you are sending carry the correct message! Food on Valentine's Day Restaurants too benefit from all those romantic dinners for two. A more open declaration is to cook for your loved one.

FOOTSTEPS COFFEE SHOP

Back in 2009, with help from The Trussell Trust, Highway Church set up the Penryn and Falmouth Foodbank to supply a desperate need for those living through hard times in our community. It could happen to any of us at any time; sickness, injury, marital breakdown, job loss, no savings and a gap of weeks before benefits kick in. There but for the grace of God go any of us! A massive team of volunteers from the local community and Falmouth & Penryn Churches Together have supported the Foodbank initiative from the very beginning.

Falmouth & Penryn Churches Together knew fundraising was needed which was going to be a regular and steady source of funding. In January 2011, several pleas went out asking for volunteers and the King Charles coffee shop was rented for the first time on 1st April 2011.

A very generous lady donated the rent for the first Friday and other supporters donated the funding to pay for aprons and our Footsteps sign, also attractive table-cloths and bright trays.

It was so stressful running for the first time. We didn’t have a clue and our customers were mostly friends and family. A month later in May, it didn’t seem so stressful; so we decided to increase to twice a month.

We always pray as we open and on many occasions our prayers have been answered! At the same time, Street Pastors had been running just over a year and start-up funding had stopped and the after-school KidzKlubs were also struggling

for funds. We decided to split the proceeds between Foodbank and KidzKlub as the Street Pastors had managed to get some funding from the Lord Mayor’s charity. In September 2011, F&PCT were approached by the Falmouth house of St Petroc’s to set up a ‘Friends of St Petroc’s’ Falmouth group. Footsteps had already established a link with the house and had begun to build relationship with the residents, as soup and cakes not eaten were taken there at the end of the coffee shop day – a treat for tea for the residents and no wastage of the lovely homemade fare. We knew at the

coffee shop that we could help by increasing up to three Fridays a month if we could get more help!

God had His hand on things…. Soon after this, last March, the Christian Union at the University contacted us to offer help from the students and they started in April with great appreciation from our loyal customers and from visitors to the town. We have been running on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fridays since April 2012 and, even over the summer holidays, were helped by a small group of students who stayed in Falmouth for the summer! We are now regularly supporting Foodbank, Street Pastors, KidzKlub and St Petroc’s Falmouth and have raised over £6,000 thus far…. just from a few cakes, scones and soup and a lot of time and love from our amazing ladies and gentlemen. We need to make this a sustainable initiative that is ‘owned’ by all those involved and has the support of the local community.

The Footsteps Coffee Shop is not only raising funds for all these outreach initiatives, it is also witnessing and outreaching to the community itself. Helpers have been blessed with new friendships and new purpose and are aged from 18 to over 80 – you are never too old to be involved in some way! We have a really caring friendly atmosphere and everybody feels valued – and there is a lot of love! We are gaining a regular following locally and customers tell us how peaceful and welcoming the coffee shop is. For many of our ladies and gentleman, it has given a real sense of purpose and it has helped them through trials in their own lives.

Anybody wishing to be involved please contact Penny Williams on 313806 or Ali Durkin 378019 for more information.

Has over 30 years experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary

practice and is a director of Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd

Congratulations!! You’ve decided to get a new kitten or puppy, you have been sensible and consulted your vet about the correct way to feed and worm them and you have had the correct course of vaccinations. Well done! That is the best start you can give them for their health, but is that all you can do? What about training and socialisation?

Figure 1 Kittens

New pups and kittens need a huge stimulus to help them adjust to their lives away from the litter. Plenty of play is one thing, and pups and kittens need lots of toys and attention to prevent boredom and destructive behaviour and to keep them happy. In addition, a positive approach to house training and obedience, with lots of praise for good behaviour, works best and helps most pets to learn fast - so try to ignore those occasional accidents!

Pets also need a gradual introduction to the world outside, and the younger they are, the better they cope. Although this may seem at odds with the need to keep them away from other animals until they have had their vaccinations, taking them outside to the garden under supervision, and, in the case of pups, for walks in your arms, can help to prevent them developing fears and phobias later in life.

Allowing them to experience loud noises and to see traffic going by helps them to get used to common sights and sounds early on; and at puppy party’s young pups can also come into contact with other pups and learn to play and interact on a canine level in a safe environment. This helps to prevent anxiety and potentially aggressive behaviour later on, and will make it easier for your pooch to make friends down at the park! So please get in touch with your vet if you want any information about local puppy parties, or any advice on training and socialisation.

When you first buy that puppy or kitten, it’s hard to picture them at the other end of their lives. But it happens in too short a space of time – grey hairs start to appear all too soon – my own dog started to go grey around her muzzle by the time she was three years old, and that playful kitten who came into our surgery in Falmouth as a stray is now a doddery old cat who spends as much time as she can, curled up in the dog’s basket.

There seem to be lots of puppies around at the moment – there were 9 in last Saturday’s puppy socialisation class! And as Spring 2013 approaches, with no doubt the usual influx of unexpected kittens, let’s not forget the Old Timers as well and make sure they also enjoy a Happy New Year.

of amazing occasions but nothing that really stands out...

Simple pleasure:Watching old b&w sit-coms / movies - i'm really into The Munsters right now.

Favourite Food: to be Martin Scorsese's epic, Casino

Mac & cheese, it was a classic at my nan's house! I would beg her to make it every

Favourite Book:It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be by Paul Arden - really

encourages me to think out of the box

Life would be simlper if...It was hot! I love the summer times in Cornwall, everyone seems to be much happier

and nothing really seems a struggle.

Luxury item I last bought:Would have to be my pen. It's a Cross and was a present for myself over Christmas,

how sad!
