The 2012 Reporter Profit andLoss Statement is much worse

than last year. We had a $2,340decrease in outside advertising. Our total loss for the Reporter forthis year was $23,273 ($4,540 morethan in 2011.) This represents ourlargest historical annual loss. Ourcosts of production went up $2,200,considerably higher than the last4 years. Our postage only went up$39, this cost has been relativelyconstant of the last 4 years. OurBoosters contributed $1,305 in2012 ($345 more than in 2011,)thanks everyone for helping usfight this cost battle.

I don’t think any units or clubsreceived commissions by gettingads for the Reporter (don’t forget, there can be a 25% commission forfirst year ads to your unit or club.)

We don’t expect members to goout and solicit advertising, just stayalert for possibilities. Give pro-

spective advertisers a Reporter andthe Reporter brochure (availablein the office and on the Website<http://sahibshrine.org/reporter/>.)

Each year I make a statementhere, lamenting that our member-ship had dropped, again! 1,700 in2009; 1,553 (9%) in 2010; 1,454 (7%)in 2011 and this year we ended upwith 1,363 (9%)! An increase inpercentage of drop over last year.So much for an improving trend? Our losses from The Black Camelwere also down proportionatelyagain, from 2011.

I think we can expect a numberof improvements in results overlast year. Our Hospital Benefit Daysteam has made many strides to in-crease effectiveness of our collec-tions and our Annual Sahib ShrineCircus is entering into a completelynew scenario by teaming up withCircus Sarasota. Let’s hope thesemake for a brighter 2013.

February is a month filled withmany memorable events.

There is Groundhog Day, Lincoln’sBirthday, Ash Wednesday,Valentine’s Day, Chinese NewYear, Mardi Gras, President’s Dayand Washington’s Birthday. Whatmore could anyone want? Which ofthese days is the most significant?

Remembrances sometimesspeak to us of “the good old days.”Maybe we wonder how good werethey? There must have been a lotof good because now-a-days we seea trend wanting to recreate thoseold days. Old songs are being re-vived. Old movies are beingbrought back. Traditions of longago are being recreated. Some ofus in the older frames of life like torelive some memories of the 20’s,30’s and 40’s. TV scenes in its en-tertainment take us back to those“good old days.” The old-fashioneddays must have had a feeling of

something safe and secure, so itwould seem.

Yes, but those bygone years hadtheir share of fears, uncertaintiesand discouragements. There werethe Nazi and Communist wars, theGreat Depression, the worries andbroken dreams as well as the dis-eases for which there was no cure. Some of us might remember whatit was like to have little money tospare.

However, through all of thatwhich once was, we go forward tocelebrate important days of remem-brance. No matter what the cir-cumstances are or were, one sourceof remembrance is to be remindedthat “the Lord is my light and sal-vation, whom shall I fear? The Lordis my strength, my life, of whomshall I be afraid?” Such is the un-failing governance of our SupremeArchitect of the Universe! So withthat – Pax Vobiscum!

Potentate’sNotes

Nobles,

I’m certainly glad that Stacey Lee and I are living in such a beautifulplace as Sarasota and such a wonderful climate. Several of our familieshave visited relatives up north and either found temperatures extremelycold or were stuck in a snowstorm. Well, here’s hoping everyone getshome safely.

We are now over our Installation of Officers, a wonderful dinner anddancing attended by over 100 of our fellow nobles and ladies. I’m verypleased with the attendance and hope this affair brings us closertogether as a Shrine.

Our Rededication Service is now history and that went well as did ourrefreshment service on the Church Campus.

We have already received several inquiries concerning visits to ourShriners Hospital for Children in Tampa by our Donor RelationsChairman Bob Rodd and our Public Relations Chairman Harold Eady. Inaddition, Tampa Hospital Days are in February, along with EgyptShriners’ Potentate’s Ball. Looks like a busy start to 2013.

Stay safe and we’ll see you around the temple.

Yours in the Faith,

William “Bill” H. Zurlo, Potentate

Chief Rabban’s notesby Rocky Kearney, [email protected]

Recorder’s notesby Don Vos, [email protected]

Assistant Rabban’s notesby Connie Jacobi, [email protected]

Brothers and nobles of Sahib Shriners, my sincerethanks for having the opportunity of being your

Recorder for 2013. With Ill. Sir Bill Zurlo and hisDivan wishing you and yours a Happy New Year, andmay all of you be prosperous in the coming year, andthe same for your clubs and units.

Remember nobles, we are all in this together, andlet us help our fellow clubs and units with their manyactivities. Let us all work together and make SahibShriners bigger and better for 2013. Together we canmake this happen. Please keep track of what ishappening on your calendar and let us come togetherfor our great Sahib Shrine.

As I’ve said many times, you cannot buy what wehave to offer at Sahib. Whether in prayers for afellow noble or sister, or a helping hand for a noble incrisis, because that’s who we are. They should bebeating down our doors to see why we are having agreat time at Sahib.

Nobles, stay informed, and attend if you can, anyShrine functions.

Greetings nobles, ladies and friends. At the writ-ing of this article, they have not played the East/

West game yet, so I’m going to make a prediction ofthe score. Let me think now, this is very toughbecause as of January 1 I haven’t seen the roster sohere goes. East 24 West 21 I think I’m showing a littlefavoritism to the east seeing I’m from the east plusI’ll be sitting on the east side of the field. No matterwho wins the game I have another prediction. Sahibwill be the greatest supporter of this game and ourgroup will stand out in the stands in our GalapagosBlue T-shirts. So far, the volunteers from Sahib havebeen second to none. We have a great group of work-ers that meet the players at the airport and drivethem to their hotel. They make these kids feel wel-come and make their arrival in Tampa a smooth one.You must remember that they always travel as ateam and now they are on their own. Some haveactually never flown by themselves. There is usually

someone from our group that is from their home area;and they strike up a great conversation. That’s onSaturday, on Sunday they visit our Shriners Hospitalfor Children in Tampa. When they get off the bus, youcan tell by the looks on their faces, it’s the last placein the world they want to be. That is till they meetthe kids of Shriner’s Hospital. It doesn’t take long forthe players to get involved with the kids, and beforeyou know it, we have a hard time getting the playersback to the buses. They talk about the kids all week, and I can guarantee you, the rest of their lives.

This is a great fraternity we have going here, andI hope everyone has that same feeling as the players.Let’s keep that feeling going here at Sahib where wewant to keep up the work and not get on the bus! There is a lot going on, so keep checking your calen-dar book and the Web page. There’s a Ball coming upvery soon too. Don’t forget your Blue Lodges. Theyall have new officers and need our support.

Thanks to all the nobles of Sahib for electing me asyour Assistant Rabban. I hope that I will live up

to the position. Remember; if there is something thatI can do for your unit or club, just ask. It will take allof us to make it a great year.

Membership is the thing of the year; we need eachand everyone to get behind our Membership Com-mittee to help bring new Shriners to Sahib. If youhave a Mason friend ask him to join you here at Sahib,I bet he’ll thank you.

Remember Membership, Membership, Member-ship!

Potentate’s Ball on February 2 is almost here andfrom what I hear it will be the “event” of the year, soI hope to see you all there.

Things to come - Pancake Breakfast February 3and Birthday Anniversary Dinner/Dance on Febru-ary 12, since it’s close to Valentine’s Day bring your

sweetie for a great time with your fellow nobles andladies. February 17 is the Spaghetti Dinner by theMotor Corps, always a great time. Call Marylou (941)366-4449 ext. 320 for your tickets to all events here atSahib.

Chief Rabban Rocky had a great bus/tail gateparty trip to the East/West Shrine game at the Trop.Everyone who went had a good time with supertailgating with all food and drinks one could have. Ifyou missed this one, mark your calendar for nextyear. I think Sahib had the “largest group.” Congratsand thanks to Rocky and Wendy on a job well done.

Remember the Circus is coming. Are you ready tosell those tickets and ads? Start talking it up at theshops where you shop and clubs to which you belong. This is a Sahib Fundraiser and we need everyone toget behind it.

As we go to press, we received no responses to ourJanuary Quotable Notable quiz. It was locally retiredDistinguished Research Professor of Law Robert J.Martineau, Emeritus, University of Cincinnati whowrote of the latest scandal in Florida’s dysfunctionalelection system: “The right to vote is the most funda-mental right in a democracy. This is what many havegiven their lives to protect. We make a fundamentalerror in placing the responsibility for administeringelections in the hands of state and local partisan offi-cials who often use their position primarily to gainpartisan advantage or who are simply incompetent.”

So here’s our February quiz. What former Stategovernor was recently quoted as tweeting: “I believein evolution and global warming. Call me crazy.”

The first non-club member to identify this Quot-able Notable at the above e-mail address or phone429-6882, wins a free Tuesday morning breakfast fortwo with the North Port Shrine Club.

Be Burn Aware: A Campaign to Prevent Burn Injuries

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is determined to decrease the number of preventable pediatric burn injuries by raising awareness. One program in this effort is the annual Burn Awareness campaign, which began more than 20 years ago.

During the first full week of February, our public relations efforts emphasize Burn Awareness Week, the kickoff of a year-long educational campaign aimed at burn awareness and prevention, including offering free educational materials via our website. The items, including posters, activity books and fact sheets, are designed to be a resource for firefighters, teachers, parents and others concerned with the safety and well-being of children. Many of the items are available in both English and Spanish.

We don’t often think of it, but without some attention and awareness, our homes can be dangerous places, especially for children. Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips.

“At Shriners Hospitals for Children, preventing burn injuries and providing burn awareness education is a concerted, continuous effort,” said Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer, Shriners Hospitals for Children. “In 2013, our campaign, ‘Be Burn Aware,’ focuses on teaching children ways to avoid burn injuries at home, with a particular emphasis on scalds. Scald injuries account for a large percentage of pediatric burn injuries, and many of them are preventable.”

The campaign features two child-friendly characters who showcase and share our messages. Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot – are featured in activity books for children ages 3-7 and 8-12. The engaging pair lead the children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them. The coloring pages, word searches, cartoons, and other activities are designed to grab the children’s attention and present the information

in a memorable, age-appropriate manner. The campaign also includes a poster of safety tips, as well as materials emphasizing prevention of scald injuries.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving the lives of children,” said Richard Kagan, M.D., chief of staff, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati and member of the physician executive team. “Many burn injuries that occur in the home are easily preventable; we hope that our ongoing awareness and prevention campaigns will reduce the incidence of these injuries.”

Previous years’ efforts have emphasized prevention of gasoline and gasoline-related burn and scald injuries. All available materials can be viewed and ordered at www.burnawareness.org.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is also assisted in its burn prevention efforts by members of the Shriners fraternity, who promote the campaign in their local communities in a variety of creative ways.

Unit Councilby Fred Phillips, Chairman, [email protected]

The New Year has arrived and the first Unit Coun-cil meeting was held on January 5. We only had

six units represented according to our sign-in-ros-ter. Having looked around the meeting room I knowthere were a few other units represented that hadnot signed in. Still it was disappointing that moreunits were not represented and I hope more will beat next month’s meeting as we need the support andcooperation of all units.

Those units that were represented took part insome important decisions that will affect all unitshere at Sahib in the coming year. First and mostimportant to me personally, was Steve Spencer of theLegion of Honor and Ron LeVene of the Model T’scoming forward to take the positions of Unit CouncilVice Chairman and Secretary respectively. Also,Frank Metheny has agreed to help me whenever hecan fit it in his schedule. I feel sure that, with themand the support of all nobles and ladies, we have agood chance to make 2013 a very good year for Sahib.

The units present at the meeting also voted tohave another Casino Night this year. Your councilofficers along with Floyd LaDue of the Oriental Bandhave since met and are trying to come up with a date. One of the problems always encountered is conflictswith the many other events going on here at Sahib.

Watch for more details later and if you have anysuggestions please pass them on to one of the offic-ers.

Of immediate concern is the Sarasota CountyFair to be held March 15-24. By time you are readingthis, we should have received confirmation of ourparticipation. If so, this year units and clubs willagain share in our proceeds from manning the ticketbooths and collecting tickets at the three entrances. This is a good opportunity for units and clubs to earnmoney for their treasuries which can be used in anyway they desire.

Finally, a few words to refresh memories on thehistory and purpose of the Unit Council. Originallyformed in 1990 “to unite the units into one bodywhich would provide a more efficient and effectivework force than the individual units could do work-ing separately. Individual units could maintain theirautonomy, continue to direct those activities thatwere unit oriented in scope, and could keep forthemselves the earnings there from.” Meetings wereheld following the monthly Club/Unit Head meet-ings. The council functioned successfully while pro-viding workers for temple-wide activities such asthe circus, bingo and the dog track openings, amongother things. Funds generated by these activities

were allotted to units according to their participa-tion and were to be used for (1) convention travel, (2)parade equipment, (3) uniforms and equipment and(4) donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children trans-portation fund, or the building fund. The councilbecame the only forum for units to get together anddiscuss a variety of subjects for the good of the order. In 1996, the By Laws were revised to incorporatesuch forums and allow units to use funds earned asthey desired. As time went on, most of the sources forrevenue went away and the council faded into thesunset. In 2011, Potentate Tom Millaway revived the

Council. He later offered the council the opportunityto manage Sahib’s participation in the SarasotaCounty Fair and to share the proceeds among thoseparticipating. Council members voted to accept andthat, along with the Dog Track opening, are cur-rently the only two temple-wide fundraisers for theCouncil. Current Potentate Ill. Sir Bill Zurlo hasstated he will do all he can to help, as long as thecouncil is willing to make the necessary efforts. Allunits are encouraged to participate in our monthlymeetings and to provide inputs for improving thecouncil activities.

Well, you did it again—you elected me! If I messup, it’s your fault. Thanks for your support. I’ll

try to make sure your faith in me has not beenmisplaced.

We have a busy rebuilding year ahead, starting asalways with membership! Illustrious Sir Bill hasordered a special $110 initiation fee ‘til the AprilCeremonial! If you have friends or family who may beinterested, now is the time! We have a couple of funthings to throw in for the first and second signers. Sokeep an eye out for strange happenings!

We’ll be on the road a bit to visit our lodges as wedid last year. Not as formal, but still spreading themessage of Sahib Shriners.

We’ll also continue our “invite our lodge mastersand secretaries” to breakfast in March. We tried thislast year and found that it was well worthwhile to allconcerned. We’ll have a guest from Tampa, an old

friend of mine from Maine, as our keynote leader. There will be other guests I’m sure, I’ll keep youposted.

Our mottos this year are “replace yourself”,“each one get one” we need the support of all SahibShriners, your committee of five members can onlybeat the drum to keep you thinking of our need fornew members. We are now under 1400 members! As our numbers dwindle, the need for replacement$$$$$$$ grow and sources of income become moredifficult for all of clubs and units to identify andaccess. We are in a dangerous situation and all of usmust step up to help!

I think it’s time for me to hang up. I get a littlecarried away at times.

For your info, Sandy and I have moved to 155Grand Oak Circle, in Venice. Nuff said!

I am looking forward to the East/West ShrineGame so I hope you got your tickets. I look forward tothe challenge and a busy February. See you at thetemple.

The past couple of months have given us the re-sults of some pretty contentious elections, both

in the national election and our Sahib Shriners elec-tion. For those that voted in either or both events, Icongratulate you for your interest in the future ofeach endeavor. While some may not like the specificresults, it is imperative that we accept the wishes ofthe majority and make the best of those results. Forthose that did not vote, you have no right to complainabout the direction of either. As a side result at theDecember Stated Meeting, the nobles present votedby a separate vote to accept the 2013 budget that waspresented at the November meeting. That budgetproposes operating income of $436,062.00 from atotal budget of $985,983.00. By either voting or notvoting, you have committed as a member of SahibShriners to the support necessary to meet thoseobligations. Allow me to outline some of the areas wehope you will show your support.

Dues: With a membership of 1440, we have bud-geted income of $130,000 from dues. As you can seethis covers less than 30% of our needs. The biggesthelp here is that if you have not yet paid your dues;please make that a high priority.

Initiations: New members are essential for theprosperity of our fraternity and our obligations toour Shriners Hospitals for Children. Our budget hasprojected for 30 new nobles to be created for 2013. Asyou visit your Blue Lodges, be on the lookout forthose brothers you may want to welcome to SahibShriners and ask them.

Rental income: Outside rentals are projected toprovide $35,000 to our operations. This means thatwe must make allowances that sometimes our hall orlounge may not be available for our rehearsals ormeetings and flexibility will help “pay the rent.”

Circus: Our new Circus committee has projectedprofits of $40,000 for the October event. This is analmost 75% increase over the success of last year yetstill short of the numbers generated in years past. Ihope that you will support this vital project by be-coming either a booster or a ringmaster. This is the

program to provide the free show for the school kids.Of course, we also need everyone to ask your neigh-borhood business partners to take an advertisementin our program book. And lastly, plan to support yourShrine Circus by attending one of the performanceswith your family and neighbors.

Bingo: Where would we have been last year with-out Bingo? Our budget for 2013 hopes to get $120,000from our “family” of Bingo players and workers; arequest for workers has regularly been posted in theReporter. This fundraiser is both fun and vital to ourcontinued operation. Please offer to do what you may.

Major fundraisers: These are the various shows, dinners, picnics, casino nights, and other events puton by the temple. We have a couple of other opportu-nities that are being examined by the Divan for thisyear. Your support of these efforts to maintain yourShrine is expected where within your cable tow andability. Our budget expects $45,000 from this area.

Fraternal fundraisers: These are the efforts ofthe individual clubs and units to raise revenue fortheir units as well as the Shrine. The Hillbilly din-ners, Pancake Breakfasts, Spaghetti Dinners, FishFries, Banjo & Band concerts, Tea Dances, and vari-ous fifty-fifty drawings are but a few of the opportu-nities to help while enjoying the comradery of yourbrother nobles. Our budget calls for $25,000 to begenerated here.

To save you the effort of adding the above, itcomes to $398,000. The remaining budget calls forincome from our restaurant/lounge and individualgifts or legacies. If each member would come to Sahibonce a quarter for dinner, our kitchen would beoverwhelmed. The next time you plan to dine out ata local eatery, please consider your own restaurantat 600 North Beneva. You will be pleased by thequality and the prices.

I don’t know if your budget has ever been laid outbefore you but I believe that the more you under-stand the needs of your fraternity, the easier it willbe to support it. As your treasurer, I thank you forthat support.

Hospital Daysby Tim Kinchla, Co-Chair, [email protected]

February is Hospital Days month! The time isupon us! Nobles, are you helping with collec-

tions? Have you contacted your unit or club to offeryour support? This is “Crunch Time”!

It is all about “our kids”! Are you willing to makethat commitment to them? Without your efforts, fundswill not be available to get them to their much-neededappointments for treatment and rehabilitation.

How about this? In November, a small Transpor-tation Fundraiser was held with over $5000 col-

lected. The “Roadrunners,” God love them, spentnumerous hours manning a site to collect some ofthose funds. Not only do they commit to getting ourkids to and from but also they are willing to be on the“collection lines” to cover the costs of transporta-tion expenses. How’s that for a commitment?

Contact your unit or club or contact Tim Kinchlaat <[email protected]> or (941) 416 3110 to helpwith collections.

Public Relations – Sophiaby Harold Eady, Director, [email protected]

We conduct many different public relation ef-forts throughout the year. Some are more suc-

cessful then others. One consistent key to a success-ful event is when our patients of Shriners Hospitalfor Children are part of that effort.

For example, a few weeks ago our Hospital Chair-man, Jesus, invited one of our patients Sophia andher mother Marie Bailey as guests to our Thursdayluncheon. Marie gave a very heart-warming story oftheir experiences with the Shriners.

Another recent example was our Annual ShrinersChildren’s Christmas Celebration and this year (in

my humble opinion) was one of the best ever. Ourhospital chairman arranged to have close to fifty ofour patients attend as well as several family mem-bers. The Oriental Band, as usual, provided somewonderful entertainment highlighted by having thechildren join the band in playing the instruments.Several people had commented the band even soundedbetter when the kids played. This may become verytrue when the seven kids who won the children gui-tars become experts. These guitars donated by theOriental Band, thanks to Tom Perez who arrangedwith Wayne A. O’Dell of Armidillo Enterprises.

Page 25: February 2013

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

February 2013 SAHIB REPORTER Page 25

Our Sahib Clowns also provided some outstand-ing entertainment which all the kids (and adults)thoroughly enjoyed. To our Sahib units, the OrientalBand and the Clowns, congratulations on presentingvery good performances.

Another highlight of the day was the arrival ofMr. and Mrs. Santa Clause. Santa and Hospital Chair-

man, Jesus, presented gifts to all the children. Seephotos of this on page 9 and 47, and below.

It is examples like these when our hospital pa-tients are featured that often attracts the mediawhich in turn gives us great PR exposure to thepublic.

Everyone lined for hamburgers and hotdogs atthe December Sahib Shriners Children’s ChristmasCelebration after everyone received their presents.

We are thrilled to have Leo Burnett as theShriners Hospitals for Children agency of

Leo Burnett’sprimary role for us is to help tell the Shriners Hospi-tals for Children story — building a national brandpresence and raising awareness of the good worksthat our hospitals and care facilities do every day.

There are almost 1.5 million registered charities inthe United States today. With so many worthwhilestories to tell, we have to break through and have ourvoice be heard.

The creative approach that the Leo Burnett teamsuggested is based on the loving care our childrenreceive at the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Childrencare facilities. As they visited our hospitals theirprofessionals saw first-hand the work we do andwere moved by the extraordinary caring that is shown

to the children and their families. They summed uptheir thoughts with the statement: “every day atShriners Hospitals for Children, love comes to therescue.” Based upon this insight, in early 2012, LeoBurnett unveiled Shriners Hospitals for Children“Love to the rescue” — our long-term campaign theme.

The Love to the rescue campaign logo is a varia-tion of our Shriners Hospitals for children logo, creating a heart to signify the “love” that is shown byShriners and staff as we con-tinue to care for kids.

In awareness-nationalCable TV, internet market-ing, direct mail and publicrelations. Using high fre-quency message deliverypermits the public to seeShriners Hospitals for Chil-dren on their TV, in themailbox, online, at eventsand in the news media. Aswe gain momentum fromthis consistent, cohesiveadvertising presence, community members will be-come familiar with the breakthrough work our hos-pitals accomplish for children. Once the public isfully aware of the Shriners Hospitals for Childrenstory, parents with children in need will seek ourexpertise and people will be more inclined to donate. As we grow our annual donations, we can expand thenumber of children we serve substantially. And of

course, as younger generations learn what greatwork the Shriners accomplish they will want to be-come members.

Fraternal MembershipYou’ll notice that our TV ads all include a Shriner inhis fez helping our patients. This technique createswhat is known as a “halo effect”, meaning people seethe Shriners in action, generating interest in frater-

nal membership. Since IRSregulations govern non-profit organizations likeour hospitals, we cannotspecifically spend hospitalfunds to promote frater-nal membership; however,we’re confident this ad-vertising campaign willpositively impact our re-cruitment efforts.

An interesting point re-vealed by research wasthat more young people

are seeking ways to make society better. As youngmen see the advertisements, they will have the op-portunity to join our ranks and do just that.

tions have to co-exist in order to causewhat Dr. Koncz refers to as “extreme badluck”. Some of these risk factors includebody temperature, genetic predisposi-tion, hormonal abnormalities, electro-physiological abnormalities, as well asunintended side effects from drug inter-actions.

Often we read in the newspaper aboutbabies or someone in their thirties orforties that suddenly dies with no warn-ing signs. In some cases, an inheritedcardiac arrhythmia known as Brugadasyndrome is the culprit. It is estimated

that this disease is present in approxi-mately 1 in 5000 people in the UnitedStates and in Southeast Asia it is morecommon, affecting 1-2 in 1,000. Fre-quently the first sign of a problem iswhen the patient’s heart stops, manywill die of sudden cardiac death if imme-diate action is not taken to restart theheart. A number of risk factors generallyline up to cause their heart to shortcircuit electrically.

Babies diagnosed with Brugada syn-drome need to be watched closely if theybegin to run a fever because elevatedbody temperature can exacerbate theunderlying problem. Extreme exercisecan exacerbate the disease process lurk-ing in the hearts of student or profes-sional athletes. Antzelevitch is aproponent of requiring that every ath-lete playing sports gets an electrocar-diogram. He states that this is importantbecause, “diseases like hypertrophic car-diomyopathy, catecholaminergic poly-morphic ventricular tachycardia, longQT syndrome and others are particu-larly deadly under conditions of extremeexertion.”

Many people die after having a heartattack. In the vast majority of cases, death is due to a cardiac arrhythmia. Why some experience fatal arrhythmiasafter a heart attack, while others do not,is a question that scientists are grap-pling with. An early repolarization pat-tern (ERP) in the ECG has recently beenidentified as a risk factor. A major focusof Dr. Koncz and Gurabi’s research is tobetter understand the role of ERP incardiac arrhythmia disease.

They will spend the next year at theMMRL trying to better understand therisk factors that lead to the “perfectstorm.” That knowledge will help clini-cians better identify those individualsat risk and minimize their chance ofcardiac arrest.

public awareness, donor engagementand membership is not a quick fix. Agreat example of dedication to a brand isSt. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospitalin Memphis. For over 17 years they haveinvested tens of millions of dollars en-couraging people to “give to help themlive.” St. Jude realized decades ago that

a consistent media presence, combinedwith development officers stationedacross America, was the formula to amassan enormous endowment that serves aone-location research hospital.

Nyla Temple No. 152Daughters of the Nileby Marlies Gluck-Upton, Queen, [email protected]

Love is in the air, and that particularly relates toour Nyla Temple. The basis of our belief is the

sisterhood of women and the love we bear for eachother.

February reminds us of that love and caring whichkeeps all of us going when times are rough.

Yes, there is ritual, but it is used to reinforce thelessons of how to bring out the best in humanity. Weare taught to accept each woman with her flaws andto help each other. This does not preclude the

fundraising we do for the Shriners Hospitals forChildren. With that in mind, we urge you to staytuned for information on our Shredathon. We’ll letyou know when details are formalized. But mean-while, don’t have your important papers shredded.Save them for our fundraiser and we will see thatthey are properly disposed of. With Nyla love.

You ask what’s going on with Sar-I Court? Let metell you!

On January 31, we had an outstanding day inhonor of Lady Carol Sue Roberts, GHP with a fantas-tic luncheon held for her at the beautiful Laurel OakCountry Club. “Foxy” Lady Liz Fox did her usualoutstanding job of putting this fun luncheon together, well done foxy lady! Then the next day we had thepleasure of welcoming our Grand High PriestessLady Carole Sue Roberts to our Sar-I Court StatedMeeting. As usual our Sar-I Court did a fantastic jobof making her welcome!

February will be almost as busy as December withour fantastic “Sheik” Affair Fashion Show at TaraGolf and Country Club on February 16, fashionspresented by Dillards. A great luncheon and fashionshow done by our Second Ceremonial Lady JudyWhite Harris. These ladies put so much work andefforts into preparing for these luncheons and GHPofficial visits and always do a super job! How fortu-nate our Sar-I Court has been with all our officers, past and present!

A big thank you for all your hard work ladies tomake our Sar-I the great court it is! An especially bigthank you to our High Priestess Lady Kay Weyer, (a

terrific lady) and all her officers for what they do forour court! Thank you! Thank you! And please let’s notforget our terrific members who are all so loyal withattending our court meetings and fun activities!

Again, I have to say I am so pleased to be a part ofSar-I Court, it’s true we are really like a big family!Always there to help each other when needed. Ifanyone is interested in joining us, please give me acall 377-6973! I will see that you get to the properlady to give you all the information required to be apart of this group. It is truly wonderful! And wewould love to have you!

I guess that about covers it until my next article!Cheer up ladies this is almost my last article for ourcourt!

I know you were not happy with my last emailpassword and you felt it was too long—you think? Itwas Mickeyminnieplutohueylouiedeweydonaldgoofysacramento.

But I just did what I was told, that I needed atleast eight characters and include at least one capi-tal and I did just that! Okay, okay I changed it! Maybeit was a bit long!

Happy Valentines Day!

Electrophysiology Program seeks to better under-stand how the electrical system in our heart works inboth health and disease. MMRL scientists also workwith pharmaceutical companies to ensure that themedications being developed are safe and effective. Finally, our Stem Cell Center has the capability ofcreating new heart cells from skin cells and/or lym-phocytes. These induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS)cells can then be used to create human models ofdisease, for safety pharmacology as well as for regen-erative therapy.

Dr. Istvan Koncz, a postdoctoral fellow and ZsoltGurabi, a predoctoral fellow at the MMRL are bothfrom Szeged, Hungary and are working under Dr.

Religion and FreemasonryCharles Darwin opened a new window on scientificand theological study with the publication in 1859 ofhis contribution to modern science entitled On theOrigin of Species, followed in 1871 by his book De-scent of Man. This window looked out on a harvest ofconcepts and principles unimagined in the intellec-tual life of man. Where God’s laws were interpretedto mean that all living organisms were created toadapt with each other and fit perfectly into their ownenvironment. Darwin removed God and his naturallaws and in their stead, he placed the principles ofcommon ancestry of humans and apes and his ex-planatory theory of natural selection. This almostunbelievable concept burst upon the quiet lives ofthe western world’s scientific community like anexploding asteroid of gargantuan proportions andset off a firestorm of frenzied activity in every study

and laboratory in Europe and America, resulting inan unprecedented revolution in philosophy. But God,having been rejected by science for almost 150 years, has now been reintroduced in a new dimension byone of the greatest living scientists of our time,Stephen Hocking.

We recall that Freemasonry formally organizedin 1717 in England, less than 300 years ago. It is stillbeing publicized as the most widely distributed se-cret society in the world, having an active member-ship of over three million men attached to thousandsof lodges spread over every habitable portion of theglobe—until quite recently when other diversionslaid claim to men’s leisure hours.

There are various theories of the origins of Free-masonry, and where this great fraternal organiza-tion may have had its roots (to be continued in theMarch issue.)

As we come to February several holidays comeabout, but none so widely celebrated as

Valentine’s Day. One of the great symbols of thisholiday is the heart, representing tenderness, affec-tion, love and a capacity for kindness.

This symbol is also very important for the mem-bers of our fraternity. Our use of this symbol appearsto have shown up in lectures during the early 18thcentury with the concept that every man who be-comes a Mason must first be prepared in his heart. Itis used to address the principle to both outwardconduct and the conscience of all men. In the MasterMason degree we are shown a sword pointing to anaked heart, which is to demonstrate to us thatjustice will sooner or later overtake us and that, while many of our actions and thoughts may be hid-den form the eyes of men, they cannot be hidden formthe All Seeing Eye.

In the 11th Degree of Scottish Rite we again seethe heart as a symbol, this time surrounded by flames, indicating that zeal and devotedness should inspireall Scottish Rite Masons to be true to all men andhonest and sincere in all we think or do.

In the 26th Degree a gold heart appears as asymbol, this time in the center of an equilateraltriangle with the letters “I H S” standing for “JesusHominum Salvator” or “Sapienita Imperium Harmo-nia”, teaching us that the truths of Masonry arecontained within the religions of the world.

Thus when you look at the hearts this Valentine’sDay, think of your fraternity and the teachings it haspresented to you.

Scottish Rite meets in Tampa on February 11 at7:30 p.m. Reservations for the dinner served at 6:00p.m. may be made at (813) 886-0578 or<[email protected]>.

I am Freemasonryby Ray V. Denslow

I was born in antiquity, in the ancient days whenmen first dreamed of God. I have been tried through

the ages, and found true. The crossroads of the worldbear the imprint of my feet, and the cathedrals of allnations mark the skill of my hands. I strive for beautyand for symmetry. In my heart is wisdom and strengthand courage for those who ask. Upon my altars is theBook of Holy Writ, and my prayers are to the OneOmnipotent God, my sons work and pray together, without rank or discord, in the public mart and in theinner chamber. By signs and symbols, I teach thelessons of life and of death and the relationship ofman with God and of man with man.

My arms are widespread to receive those of lawfulage and good report who seek me of their own freewill. I accept them and teach them to use my tools inthe building of men, and thereafter, find direction intheir own quest for perfection so much desired andso difficult to attain. I lift up the fallen and shelterthe sick. I hark to the orphan’s cry, the widow’s tears, the pain of the old and destitute. I am not church, norparty, nor school, yet my sons bear a full share ofresponsibility to God, to country, to neighbor andthemselves. They are freemen, tenacious of theirliberties and alert to lurking danger. At the end, I

It seems like 2012 just finished and here we arealready in the second month of 2013. Time sure flieswhen you are enjoying what you are doing. I for one cansay I am truly enjoying what I am doing with the SahibPlaque Program in helping to raise awareness andfunds for the benefit of our children at the ShrinersHospital for Children right here in Tampa. At the sametime-share a beautiful acknowledgement in the way ofa plaque, donated by Sahib, that all of us, I believe, would be extremely proud to display in our homes andbusinesses for all our friends and associates to see. Iwould not be surprised if some of them asked what it isabout and hopefully more plaque participants will beforthcoming after you share information with themabout the program.

For under .28cents a day you too can be a proud ownerof one of these plaques. If you are like most of us, youthink nothing of spending funds on many things justbecause you want to and you can. Maybe for a book, cupor coffee or in my case, a cup of hot chocolate, an icecream or even a magazine at the supermarket. We donot hesitate or feel we are depriving ourselves by doingso and we should not. We look at ways to help othersand ways to save on taxes. I am sure that many of yougive to various charities to help them further theircauses. I suggest one of those charities be the ShrinersHospitals for Children. Donations made out directly tothe Hospital are 100% tax deductible to the fullestextent allowed by law.

I would ask that you start now, if you have notalready done so by investing that .28 cents a day toassist with what we all toot our horns about, the

Greatest Philanthropy in the World, The ShrinersHospitals for Children.

I hope all of you have had the opportunity to visitour Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children, see, andhear about the fabulous work they are accomplishing. As the Donor Relations Chairman for Sahib I have hadthe privilege of attending some of the Hospital Govern-ing Board meetings up in Tampa and have gained muchrewarding insight that just helps spur me on. If you oryour family have not toured the hospital and would liketo, let me know and I will see about arranging one.

Please start your involvement in Sahib’s plaqueprogram today by sending a check made payable tothe “Shriners Hospitals for Children” for $100 ormore. (.28 Cents x 365 days = $102.20) ($100 is theminimum but can be for more if you wish to and areable). The program is set up for a five-year time withspaces on the plaque for engraved year tabs to be addedeach year you participate. You can adjust the amountyou give each year, with minimum of $100 tax-deduct-ible donation each year you participate. Hopefully youwill want to do this for five consecutive years but ifnecessary, you can skip a year.

If you know of a child that we can possibly helpplease let the office at Sahib or me know and we will seewhat we can do to get the ball rolling. We do not turnaway a child, if there is a reasonable possibility theycan benefit from the specialized services available. Theareas we work with include orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries as well as cleft lip andpalate. Hopefully you also are aware that “regardlessof the patients or families ability to pay” they will betreated if it is something we cover.

Plaques may be for you, your spouse, you and yourspouse, companion, a very special person in your life orcan be in honor or in memory of someone you love, lovedor thought very highly of. However, you do it, please doit as it helps our children and I feel sure that it will giveyou a great sense of satisfaction.

To participate just fill out the form below and attachyour check made out to Shriners Hospital for Childrenand give it to me, drop it off at the Sahib Office or sendit to Sahib Shriners, c/o Noble Robert L. During 2001, sixty-two new Shrinerswere created at Sahib. Unfortunately, the Black Camel visited Sahib Shrine, and over seventy nobles were called.

Looking at the faces of the contribu-tors to the Reporter, it is disturbing tome, to realize how many of them are nolonger with us.

The Camel Herder Super Bowl Partythat year was a big deal; the main hallhad the large screen projection TV onthe stage in the main hall and other TVsin the lounge.

The King Pins served 1,240 people atthe last pancake breakfast. The KingPins donated $16,435 to the Sahib Build-ing Fund for the previous year.

The Birthday Anniversary DinnerDance selected a queen (don’t rememberhow they selected her, I just remembershe sat in a high-backed white chair witha crown,) along with birthday and anni-versary drawing winners.

The “Sahib Shrine Center BoosterClub” was started. The idea was thatnobles and ladies might know of some-one (non-Shriners) who may be inter-ested in attending some or all of ourfunctions. They will receive a letter ev-ery other month outlining all of our func-tions for the upcoming two months forjust $10 a year. They encouraged mem-bers to take membership forms with themand just maybe a non-Shriner or a Masonmay decide to become a member. Maybesome day that member may ask the ques-tion, “How can I become a Shriner?” Someideas are timeless! The Booster Clublasted a year or two, as I recall, suspectwe lost the person most committed tothe idea, and it died.

The Sahib Oriental Band had wontheir national championships at Impe-rial in Las Vegas.

Membership at the end of 2001 was2,408.

Shriners Hospitals for Children ap-proved a record-breaking budget for 2002of over $1.6 million a day. Imperial usedto supply reports on our budget to beinserted into our magazines, they nolonger do that! In 2002, the annual bud-get was $597 million; from other sourcesI found this year’s budget is projected tobe $900 million.

I started as editor in 1995, so thismakes 2013 the beginning of my 19thyear! I will exceed 200 issues in a monthor so! That translates into somethinglike 12,000 hours; just for publishing theReporter (this doesn’t include all the ef-forts for photography and Internet post-ing or the efforts toward the Friday emailWebletter, or all the demands for eventprograms and calendars.) There are threeyears of Reporters online now, perhaps,if I ever get time, will get ten yearsonline. Not sure anyone really cares ifthey are available?

Ten years ago at Sahib!

Shriners Hospitals for Children Provides Excellent Pediatric Orthopaedic Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is one of the largest pediatric sub-specialty health care systems in the world and has the largest full-time staff of pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in the U.S.

Since the first Shriners Hospitals for Children opened in 1922, the organization has been providing care to children with orthopaedic conditions. Today, the facilities specializing in orthopaedics are dedicated to providing medical and rehabilitative care to children with congenital deformities, problems resulting from orthopaedic injuries, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Specifically, conditions treated include hip problems, foot deformities, limb deficiencies and discrepancies, spinal deformities, osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), and the orthopaedic difficulties associated with neuromuscular disorders, such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Shriners Hospitals for Children are equipped and staffed to provide care for virtually all pediatric orthopaedic problems, except acute trauma.

When treating children with orthopaedic problems, Shriners Hospitals for Children uses an interdisciplinary approach to ensure comprehensive, personalized care.

Examples of the expertise of Shriners Hospitals for Children in orthopaedics are the orthotics and prosthetics departments and the state-of-the-art movement analysis laboratories located at several hospitals.

Fourteen Shriners Hospitals have in-house orthotics services; 12 of these also provide prosthetics services. They are capable of creating everything from a complete prosthetic limb to the smallest assistive device, all as efficiently as possible.

Thirteen hospitals have movement analysis laboratories equipped to carefully study how a child with mobility problems walks. These high-tech labs use a system of reflective markers, high-speed cameras and computers to develop a model of a child’s walk that physicians use to recommend treatment.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, research in orthopaedics is emphasized. In addition to searching for an understanding of the workings of the bones, muscles and joints themselves, researchers are looking for answers and solutions in the basics of genetics, cell structures and growth and development patterns.

Some specific research projects underway in orthopaedics include developing medications to treat hypophosphatasia (a severe form of rickets) and determining the compliance rates for bracing in treating clubfoot.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is also proud of its role in medical education. In the past 20 years, more than 9,500 physicians have received residency education or postgraduate fellowships at Shriners Hospitals for Children. In addition, many of Shriners Hospitals for Children’s staff physicians hold faculty positions at academic institutions, sharing their expertise with tomorrow’s doctors

These efforts demonstrate the commitment of Shriners Hospitals for Children to providing the most comprehensive care possible in order to give patients the opportunity for full and happy lives.

“beashrinernow.com has been an extremely helpful resource in recruiting new members,” said Randy Rudge, membership development director of Shriners International.

“In today’s world everything is about convenience, and the website allows prospective members to sign-up and learn about the great benefits of being a Shriner in a matter of minutes.”

To help bring traffic to the website, Shriners International Headquarters has put together a marketing campaign. You can find online banner ads for beashrinernow.com, as well as print ads and inserts that were created for temples to hand out to prospective members.

The website is a terrific educational resource because it helps explain the relationship between the Masonic Order and Shriners International, and also features a video about the fraternity’s history. Site visitors can learn about the fraternity’s connection with Shriners Hospitals for Children® and take a virtual tour of one of the hospitals.

beashrinernow.com also helps answer any questions about the necessary steps to becoming a Master Mason and Shriner. If, after reviewing the process, an individual would like to pursue membership, all he has to do is select “The Next Step” tab , fill out a short questionnaire, and he will be paired with a virtual mentor.

One of the great features of beashrinernow.com is the interaction membership candidates have with their virtual mentors. Virtual mentors are Shriners who are active in their temple and Masonic Lodges and have volunteered to guide interested applicants through the membership process.

Candidates are paired with virtual mentors who best suit their professional and personal interests. The mentor becomes a trusted friend and advisor through exchanges of knowledge about

Freemasonry and becoming a Shriner. The process is intended to re-create the Masonic teaching of developing close, trusting relationships with prospective Masons through personal communication.

Statistics prove beashrinernow.com is helping the fraternity more effectively reach a younger demographic, given that the most recurring age for these new members has been 32. This number is especially interesting to Shriners, since one of the fraternity’s co-founders, Dr. Walter Fleming, was the same age when he developed the concept of the fraternity.

By continuing to spread awareness with initiatives like beashrinernow.com, we look forward to adding more exceptional men to the “world’s greatest fraternity.”

For the last couple of years, Shriners International has been busy developing new tools to help increase awareness of the fraternity. One of those ongoing efforts is the website beashrinernow.com, which was created specifically as a way for interested potential members to learn about the fraternity, easily and quickly.
