A community event is one way your Chamber serves the business
community and also provides entertainment value to those who live in the
community. One such event that will accomplish this in “spades” is the
Heal thy Living Expo. The one-day event will be held Saturday, February
9th, at the Douglas County Events Center from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Careful thought and planning has gone into creating this event, providing
an experience that takes into account the health, safety and recreation
interests of Colorado residents . Read more on page 9.

Economy!

What type of leader do you want to be?
Moving communities forward requires leaders to emerge from all business sectors and all employ-ment levels. Have you considered what your lead-ership role within our community is or will be? Have you ever asked your friends or colleagues how they view you as a leader? Another interest-ing question is what type of legacy do you want to leave behind?
One of our core competencies that we live by at the Chamber is to strengthen our local economy and two of the many ways this is accom-plished is through our many programs and community events. In addi-tion, we assist our members in developing business relationships by providing stewardship through leadership development, visioning, strategic planning and execution. Understanding how you view your-self as a leader can help to advance Castle Rock’s future direction
Your Chamber realizes the value in having great leaders who will help our community by volunteering and utilizing skills in a volunteer ca-pacity. If you are a professional who is results oriented, enjoys working in a team environment, likes research and development, and is com-mitted to shaping the future of Castle Rock. WE WANT YOU!
Let us plug you into a leadership role that best suits you. Some of the specific areas that we need your help are:
• Ambassadors
• Community events: Healthy Living Expo, WineFest, Fair Parade, Artfest and Starlighting
• Economic Gardening-business assistance programs
• Government Issues
• Hospitality and Tourism
• Castle Rock Stars Young Professionals
• Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)
To learn more about these areas, go to www.CastleRock.org or contact any of our team members viewed on the right-hand side of this page or at 303-688-4597. With your support and leadership, we can make Castle Rock the best place to be!

♦ The What: What the most important areas of the business that need planning.
♦ The Who: Who will be affected most by creating the plan.
Successful business owners know that Strategic Planning is one of the best tools to achieve company goals and overall growth. They know that if you want results, you must plan for them.

The January session of the Chamber’s Business Boot Camp was the first of
two addressing financial monitoring. Instructor Mike Tafoya, CEO Coach at
Estrada Strategies - DTC, pointed out that financial reports are the “steering
wheel” of the business. Numbers tell the real story about the performance
and condition of a company.
The participants focused on the Income Statement (measuring the efficiency
of the operation over time) and the Balance Sheet (measuring the company’s
financial health at a moment in time). “Flying blind” while running a business
is a recipe for failure. However, systematic monitoring of the data in these
reports can provide early warning and guidance so the owner can keep the
company on course. The February session will continue on this track and
cover the Cash Flow statement and various financial performance ratios.
This is a series of Business Boot Camp training highlights by Brian Leugs,
President of Business Communications Support, Boot Camp Mentor Chamber
Member.

Victims Assistance Program Seeks Volunteers for 2013-If one of your
new year’s resolutions is to get involved in the community or to help oth-
ers, consider joining the Castle Rock Victims Assistance Volunteer Team.
Volunteers are needed to offer emotional support and crisis intervention
to people who are victims of crime or other tragic events. The volunteers
provide victims with information on the criminal justice system and other
resources to meet their needs. At least one victim advocate is on call
each day of the weekend and for evening hours during the week.
“These dedicated volunteers help hundreds of victims of crime and those
affected by other tragic events each year,” said Victim Assistance Coordi-
nator Carole Malezija. “They are a critical member of the Town’s emer-
gency response team.”
A 40-hour training will be held throughout April, starting April 4. Applica-
tions are now available by calling 303-663-6110 or emailing VictimsAssis-
[email protected]. Because the application includes an interview and a
criminal background check, applications will only be accepted until
March 8.
Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, be able to work on-call, have an
open and non-judgmental attitude and be able to communicate effec-
tively. All volunteers are required to complete the April training and a
four-hour ride-a-long with a Castle Rock police officer.

Castle View High School’s (CVHS) Aca-
demic Booster Club (ABC) has joined the
Chamber and is celebrating its first year as
a non-profit organization. The ABC focuses
on encouraging and rewarding excellence
among the students of CVHS and re-
engaging parents and the community in
the education of our youth. CVHS would
like to thank Castle Rock businesses for
their ongoing support of the school by
hiring CVHS students, participating in
fundraisers and offer-
ing great products and
services to the school
community. CVHS is
often asked by local
businesses how they
can support the school
in more ways than
fundraising. Did you know that CVHS has
more than 1,700 students whose families
support local business? It makes sense for
CVHS and the local business community to
work together to create the best learning
environment for its students. Today's stu-
dents are tomorrow’s employees, busi-
ness owners, leaders and Chamber mem-
bers! For more information about the

nominated. Connie has been an "original" volunteer (29 years) to the D/E
Task Force and works "where ever she is needed." and "it is very rewarding
to help our neighbors in need and give out hugs!" Great job Kathy D'Amore
for her persistence in submitting Connie's application and getting Connie this
very well deserved recognition! Congratulations Connie!

Leadership Douglas County
January’s Topics: Government and Transportation
Speakers:
Leadership Skill - Servant Leadership - Bob Baker (Assistant
Chief, South Metro Fire Rescue Authority)
Local Mayors Panel: Mayor Gunning (Lone Tree), Mayor Huff
(Castle Pines), Mayor Waid (Parker), Matt Krimmer (Larkspur
Town Manager) and Jerry Flannery (Highlands Ranch Commu-
nity Association General Manager and CEO)
Douglas County Commissioner Jack Hilbert
Centennial Airport Presentation – Robert Olislagers, Executive
Director of Centennial Airport
Regional T ransportation Panel: Herman Stockinger (Director of
the Office of Policy and Government Relations, CDOT), Larry
Warner (Facilitator for the C470 Coalition) and Steve Hebert
(Community Development Director, City of Lone T ree)
January’s topics for the Leadership Douglas County class
were Government and Transportation. The morning began
with a Local Mayor’s roundtable discussion at the Lone Tree
Civic Center, thanks to one of our program’s patron sponsors,
the City of Lone Tree. The Mayor’s Roundtable was a great
way for the class participants to interact one-on-one with
each of the Mayors and leaders from the Douglas County
communities. Commissioner Hilbert also presented to the
class, discussing his role as a commissioner, the value of
building partnerships and relationships and what he views as
critical concerns facing Douglas County.
On the transportation side, the class learned about the third
busiest general aviation airport in the country. The Centen-
nial Airport has approximately one billion dollars in economic
impact and supports around 10,000 jobs, with 27% of Colo-
rado’s GDP generated within a five mile radius. Turning to
land transportation, the Regional Transportation Panel began
the discussion with a statewide perspective on population
increase vs. lanes opening and the transportation funding
shortage at the state and federal levels. Go to yourcdotdol-
lar.com to see how much how much you contribute each
year to keep Colorado’s transportation system moving.
Switching gears, the next topic was the C-470 Corridor coali-
tion – who they are, why they want action taken, the techni-
cal solution and funding options. The panel ended with the
connection between transportation and land use from Belle-
view south along I-25.
“Best day thus far, provided much of what I’d hoped for
with this LDC program. The Mayors, City Managers, Com-
missioner and transportation officials were extraordinary in
their knowledge and ability to present it to our class. What I
learned today has affected my view of leadership, provided
valuable information and affirmed my pride in Douglas
County.” Stephen Mikolajczak, RE/MAX Professionals.
Steering Committee Planners: Kristen Knoll, Matt Goudy
and John Thornton, class of 2012
