BCS SCHOOL PROGRAMS VALUE OF THE WEEK Respect. We respect the rights of
others, ourselves & the school in
an environment of harmony &
personal responsibility. Do you
respect yourself, respect others &
take responsibility for your own
actions?
Congratulations and Farewell Year 12 Students
It‘s that time of year, that Year 12 have been simultaneously looking forward to and dreading at the same time. They have reached the end of their time at Bulahdelah Central School. This week they
celebrate their final days as students, and they will be back next term for their HSC exams. They have left a mark on the school that will not be soon forgotten, and we wish them all the best for wherever
they may go in the future.

Congratulations Mr Horton and Mr De Angelis
Both Mr Horton and Mr De Angelis have been successful in gaining positions at other schools through the merit system. Mr De Angelis will start at Gloucester High School early next term whilst Mr Horton will start at Armidale High School later in the term. Both teachers will be missed by students, staff and the community. Their contribution to Bulahdelah Central School has been significant and both are outstanding teachers who have had a major impact upon many students over their time as staff members. I and the school community wish them all the best in their new positions. Farewell to our Year 12 Students This week, our Year 12 students finish their schooling prior to the HSC exams next term. We will be celebrating their successes, their trials and their tribulations at the farewell formal assembly this Thursday. There will be sad and humorous moments as students and staff reflect on the last six years of secondary school and for many their whole school life here at Bulahdelah Central School. I know there are many fond memories of the class of 2013. The friendships, the experiences, the special events, the sharing of achievements, the support for others in tough times, the different awakenings and new understandings all form the human fabric of people who have grown and developed together. I would like to thank the Year 12’s for the contribution that they have made to Bulahdelah Central School. We all acknowledge your many talents in so many areas and it is always rewarding to see those talents develop. As you now enter the world of work, training or further education, we all wish you great success.

The Bulahdelah Soccer Club would like to invite all junior players to their presentation day on Saturday 21st
September, 10.00am at the Bulahdelah Soccer Ground. Times of events are as follows:
10.30am Kick off for any child or adult wishing to have a game of soccer. 11.00am Annual General Meeting. 12.00pm Presentation of Junior Trophies and BBQ to follow.
It is essential to establish a regular routine each
morning and arriving at school on time is an important
part of your child’s morning routine.
It is important to be at school on time because:
It sets up good habits for the future.
It provides social benefits – good play time and
discussion among friends.
The school day usually begins with the teacher
giving out information to students. Eg. Any
changes to school routines, coming events etc.
It is an opportunity for important teacher/
student interaction before school.
There is plenty of time for ordering lunches if
needed.
Celebrate Attendance
Hints and Tips No 7:
Getting to school on time
REMINDER: If your student will be absent from school for 5 or more days on a family holiday,
an EXEMPTION FORM (one for each student in your family) should be completed and returned to the
school PRIOR to the holiday for principal approval.

BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
BULAHDELAH SWIMMING CLUB:
We are rapidly approaching the end of
Term 3 and the end of Year 12‘s schooling.
This Thursday our formal assembly, farewelling
Year 12, takes place in the Gym from 10:30am. All are
most welcome to celebrate this important milestone
in Year 12’s life.
Year 11 are currently doing their final exams for the
Preliminary course. Next term they will commence
their HSC courses.
Nineteen Year 9 students along with their Year adviser
and Mr De Angelis are heading out to Dubbo for a four
day excursion this week. Some of the places they
intend to visit include the Western Plains Zoo and the
Old Dubbo Gaol to name just a few. I am sure they
will all have an enjoyable time and learn a lot about
the Western Plains and some of its history.
Secondary students recently completed a detailed
survey about their perceptions of school as part of a
broader survey across other schools in NSW called the
“Tell Them From Me” student survey. Questions
about homework, attendance and engagement are
just some of the issues students were asked to
respond to.
The school hopes to use the survey to help address
issues and look at the information to inform us about
any changes we could make to some of the programs
we are currently offering. As well students were
asked to participate in a bullying audit to provide
information about the extent and scope of bullying
around the school. These results will also be used to
address issues and help us plan anti-bullying
programs.
The school has recently been reviewing our discipline
systems and structures through our Positive
Behaviour for Learning committee. One outcome was
to refine the school rules into five simple rules to
improve the school learning environment. The
following rules were settled on following extensive
consultation with staff and students:
Respect others’ right to learn.
Act in a safe and responsible manner.
Follow instructions.
Use electronic media only as directed.
Wear correct uniform and be prepared for
work.
Other issues we are hoping to trial include using after
school detentions and tightening up consequences for
unacceptable behaviours.
Lastly I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy
holiday and look forward to seeing our students
refreshed and eager for the final term of the year.
Bulahdelah Swimming Club will resume this year on
Monday the 14th of October at 3.45pm. All ages
(including adults) are welcome and the only
qualification you need is that you can swim at least
one lap of the pool. If you’ve never been to
Swimming Club before and would like to find out
more, come along on the 14th for a relaxed
afternoon with some fun races, or phone Meredyth
on 4997 4146, or email: [email protected]

VET HOSPITALITY STUDENTS:
Over the past 2 terms VET (Vocational Educational & Training) Hospitality students from both Years 11 and 12 have had the opportunity to participate in numerous real world hospitality activities outside of normal classes. Year 12 VET Hospitality students have had the opportunity to provide catering services for the Year 8 into 9 and 10 into 11 elective evening held during Term 2. The Year 12 class developed a finger food menu consisting of mini quiche, rice paper rolls, cocktail sandwiches and home made sausage rolls. Once the students had prepared these in the TTC (Trade Training Centre), after school they served them to parents, students and staff. The Year 12 VET Hospitality students also assisted Sheryl Barry, Canteen Manager, with catering and service after the Term 2 Captains’ Induction Assembly and provided coffee service for the P&C Father's Day breakfast. However, the most notable achievement by this class, a demonstration of the culmination of all the skills and knowledge they have developed, was the organisation and implementation of the catering for the Science CLN (Collegial Leadership Network) meeting, held here at BCS. Students worked together as a team to plan, develop, prepare and serve a 4 course menu, consisting of starters, entrees, mains and desserts, followed by after dinner coffee and truffles. Students received positive feedback and encouragement from all individuals they served.

As a requirement of the VET Hospitality syllabus, students must attend a hospitality industry visit and complete a range of research questions. Both the Year 11 and Year 12 VET Hospitality classes ventured down to Sydney for a tour of the operations kitchen at the Sydney Tower Restaurant followed by a delicious meal in their 360 seat buffet restaurant, where students and staff were spoilt by a 360o panoramic view of Sydney Harbour. With bellies full and spoilt by beautiful scenery, we ventured over to Sydney Olympic Park for a behind the scenes tour of ANZ Stadium. Gina, our guide, escorted us through the commercial kitchen, where we were able to interview the head chef and check out the operations of a kitchen that has the capacity to turn over enough food to cater for 20,000 people attending major events like football grand finals
and stadium rock concerts. After our tour of the kitchen we discovered the behind the scenes media area where the video ref and corporate members are housed. Following our visit to the corporate boxes we ventured to the players’ change rooms and finished our tour by running through the players shoot (to the background recording of the crowd cheering) and posed on the Olympic podium used during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my Year 12 VET Hospitality students good luck for their upcoming HSC and all their future endeavours. Cathryn Guthrie.

As Term 3 comes to a close, teaching
staff and children are busy completing
the term's programs and assessment
tasks. Stage 3 is busy finalising their
financial literacy unit which has focused on
practical maths in real situations. Students have
displayed unequalled enthusiasm as they have
planned, resourced and manned their fund-
raising activities to raise funds to support the
Stage 3 camp in Term 4. To close the unit,
teachers and classes are holding a reward
afternoon on Thursday 19th September. Activities
will begin with a sausage sizzle at lunchtime
which will need to be pre-ordered by primary
students. A note will go home early in Week 10.
As part of a joint initiative between Bulahdelah Central School and Hunter New England Health(HNEH), Ms Karina Laurie has successfully completed training and consultation in the ‘Live Life Well’ program with Ms Nicole Lubans. As a result, the school has secured a $2000 grant to be used within the school. In the first instance, Ms Laurie, Mrs McDonald and Ms Mostyn will be conferencing on Friday, 13th September, to revisit and update the BCS K-6 scope and sequence for PDHPE. Thank you to Ms Laurie for her continued support of this healthy living program and all three ladies for the professionalism and skill in managing this new role. As part of the funding initiative and consultation process, Ms Lubans has also offered her support in a range of areas. These include professional learning for staff in Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), contributing to newsletters through healthy living tips, along with the opportunity for HNEH and Healthy Canteens to meet and liaise in regards to additional healthy food and drink ideas. We are pleased to be extended the opportunity to work with the wider community for the improvement of our school programs. Our debating team are now in the finals of the lower north coast competition. They travelled to Mitchell Island Public School, a school of 37 students in an area of great natural beauty.
Students were given the topic on the day which was ‘Team Sports Are Better Than Individual Sports’ and spoke to the negative. Both teams spoke extremely well, although our team of Anjoli Luxon, Marni Barry, Chyna Smith and Hayley Chalker were declared the winning team. The students worked extremely well as a team and represented their school and their families with dignity. Congratulations to these very capable young students. Practical classes in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program will continue into Term 4. Nikki Dixon will be finishing up with classes on Friday, 20th September, to manage her many other commitments. On behalf of Bulahdelah Central School I would like to extend my thanks to Nikki in the professional yet caring and considerate manner that she has managed her classes over the past two years. The teachers and the students will miss you Nikki. On a related note, I have sought clarification in regards to the shoe requirements for practical classes. The following is the advice that I have received from one of our secondary staff who teaches practical subjects: ‘Shoes need to be hard (preferably leather) uppers. Synthetic leather is allowed as long as it looks strong and has no mesh on it. Mesh tongues do not protect the top of the foot and as such are not acceptable. We are looking for shoes that will protect the foot in case chemicals get spilt, sharp objects get dropped, somebody accidentally cuts into a foot and not the ground when digging with a shovel in the garden, hot liquids get spilt, etc. Finally, I would like to thank staff for their continued efforts with our children over the past term. So much goes on behind the scenes that enable us all to provide the best opportunities possible to our children. This effort is sometimes unnoticed or overlooked so again I thank our teachers for their continued commitment to Bulahdelah Central School. Have a safe and happy holiday, and we will see both staff and students back on the first day of Term 4, Tuesday, 8th October, 2013.
