your eyes peeled for pro-

events happening in the

Welcome back to
the new year and the new
semester here in Twin
Towers West at Marshall
University. We are very
excited to see what the
semester has in store for
our residence hall. The
Resident Advisors have
been diligent in planning
exciting programs for the
2013 spring semester. For

We would also
like to welcome a new
Resident Advisor to the
Twin Towers West Staff.
James Phillips has stood
in for Ethan Curry on the

your best to make him feel
welcome to the Twin Tow-
ers West family. For more

Towers West Times
January 2013 Volume 1, Issue 6
For this month’s RA
spotlight, we decided to put
the newest addition to the
Towers West family in the hot
seat and ask him a few ques-
tions. The 20 year old Sopho-
more known as James Phil-
lips, or more affectionately
known by his fellow staff
members as ‘J.J.’, was born
on September 17th, 1992.
He hails from the town of
New Richmond, WV in Wyo-
ming County and is majoring
in business. He would like to
become a Sales Director in
his future, but as for right
now, he’s looking to double
major and possibly even tri-
ple major. J.J. became an RA
to make the financial aspect
of college a little easier and
to have a better experience
on campus. He remarks “It
was a wonderful opportunity,
so I took it.”
Only being on the
job for a few weeks now, he
states that his favorite part
would have to be getting to
meet and be involved with
his residents. He is ecstatic
about the idea of having an
impact on their college expe-
rience and their lives. And
who’s to say that just be-
cause he may be new to the
staff, that he doesn’t already
have some spectacular pro-
gramming ideas. The thought
of having a music oriented
program where all types of
musicians get together and
have a jam session is at the
top of his list for the semes-
ter. So don’t count him out
just yet, he has a few tricks
up his sleeve.
J.J. is also interest-
ed in photography and graph-
ic design and he enjoys
watching the UNC Tar Heels
in NCAA men’s basketball.
He isn’t really a fan of the
NBA and is proud to say it.
When it comes to TV, J.J. is a
fan of the series Breaking
Bad because it’s exciting and
keeps you on your toes. He
loves any IronMan movie and
listens to many different elec-
tronic artists, but at the top
of his list is Daft Punk.
J.J. has a pretty
relaxed schedule this semes-
ter so feel free to stop on the
7th floor and make him feel
welcome. We are all very
happy to have him aboard
the Twin Towers West staff.

Another Holiday season has finally ended, but the Hall Council is just getting started.
Things to look forward to this semester include, a Hall wide book club where avid
readers can share comments with others as they work their way through a common book. Next,
The completion of the Kitchen which will open up many more opportunities to enjoy the company
of people with in our building and will allow Hall Council to plan programs using our new space!
Also our annual spring building shirt sale is coming up so be sure to keep an eye for sign-ups and
order forms! Be sure to check out the Hall Council board located in the lobby to stay up to date
with upcoming events and meetings! Meetings are the best way for us to make sure we are able
to make your resident hall experience more enjoyable and know how Hall Council can improve on
that. So come out and share in the fun this semester with Hall Council West Edition.
Sincerely,
Taj Robinson

TTE’S MONTHLYFebruary 2013
On January 29th, students participated in the Toms: Start Something That Matters party. This party provided a place for students to learn about the TOMS company and have a chance to win TOMS shoes and gift cards. Inspiring students to get involved around their local communities is what
the event was all about. The film “Toms: Start Something That Matters” was shown at the party. Students were very receptive to what was presented. Hopefully the campus has a new found appreciation for giving back and helping out the Huntington area and the world.

difficult and confusing thing,
Here are a few tips to help you
have a great semester and great
Friendships:

GO TO CLASS: Class attendance
really does correlate with your
grade.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY–
especially when dealing with
roommates and professors.
BE ON TIME TO CLASS: Walking
in late distracts both the professor
and other students.
COLLEGE IS NOT A CONTEST:
You don’t have to compete with
anyone for your grade; learn at
your own pace and don’t feel infe-
rior if you don’t understand
something the first time around.
SUPPORT SYSTEMS ARE ES-
SENTIAL FOR SURVIVAL: Make
friends; talk to everyone.
JOIN IN ALL THE ACTIVITIES
YOU CAN
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR
HELP
USE YOUR COLLEGE CATA-
LOG: You have to open it in order
to reap the benefits of what is
inside.
CHECK YOUR EMAIL
MAINAIN A POSITIVE ATTI-
TUDE: Be a good listener, stick to
your own convictions, and follow
your dreams!
I wish someone had told me...
LEARN TO SAY NO! Balance
social time and study time.
DO NOT STUDY FOR MORE
THAN TWO HOURS AT A TIME
TRY TO STUDY DURING DAY-
LIGHT HOURS
USE TWO SCHEDULES:
Using your class schedule as a
guie, block out specific times each
day to study and all other activi-
ties.
Create a semester schedule
showing midterms, finals, due
dates, and other important
events. Review both schedules
weekly and allow more study tie
as needed; a good schedule keeps
your from wandering off course.
PRIORITIZE: List what you need
to study each day; prioritize ad set
times for each item and stick to it!
USE THE 30-3-2 SCHEDULE
Study for 30 minutes
Take a 3 minute break
Upon returning, take an extra
two minutes to review then move
on to new material
No time to study? I doubt that.

Fabulous Upcoming
Programs!
On January 20th at 9pm
Brent Gates, the first
floor Resident Advisor
had a program about
starting a running club
here at Holderby!
There were 14 residents
that came and showed
an interest in the club.
Then on January 22nd
at 7:00pm Sam Godby,
Resident Advisor of the
4th floor, had “A Step
in the Right Direction”
program. Many of his
residents came out to
eat pizza and talk about
how grades were last
semester. People really
enjoyed coming out
and talking to one an-
other. Gordon Thacker
even commented that
“Holderby RA’s throw
good programs.”
The Holderby Resident
Advisors have been hard
at work coming up with
February programs. Sam
Godby is planning on
having Dr. Keelon Hinton
come in and speak about
“Love.” Miranda Carna-
han is planning on having
a program about anti-
stress. She and her resi-
dents plan on having a
“Spa Day.” Andy Morri-
son, Brent Gates, Brittany
Stevens, and Marla
Nowlin are working with
Hall Council on a “Super
Bowl Party.” This is go-
ing to be a huge party, we
plan on decorating the
entire lobby for the two
different teams planning.
We hope that you are able
to join us for our events.
