The Make or Break Time

Union budget 2015 would have a long impact on the growth and finance future of India. Even though we speak in this line every time we come up with a new government or new budget, but this time it is truly a different situation as people do not want to see them enlisted in the poor countries list globally. Of course, Mr.Modi in his one years’ tenure has definitely brought unfathomable glory to the country by making it a large investment destination of the global investors. But the actual test of his stint as the PM of India starts from now because he has lost the trust of the people in his own home turf where he

stays day in day out that is Delhi on the basis of non-performance of the government for last one year. Although we understand that one year is not good enough time to change the situation of the country but the poor people who are suffering every day are not that patient. They need their day to day needs to be fulfilled. Therefore this budget after Delhi defeat is the acid test for Modi government.

The land acquisition bill to be presented by the treasury bench in the parliament is already facing ruckus from the opposition in both the houses - even on the streets of Delhi. Therefore to bring absolute judicious budget is the only respite for the government. Of course there is no denying that this is a make or break time for the government.

What we basically need: as a developing country we need education for the poorest of the poor, employment for all, good roads and transport, good healthcare and on top of it

the commodities should be under our affordability. So for all these things we need very robust infrastructure at the back, the duties and taxation should

be aligned with the growth of the country. Sustainable manufacturing has to happen to absorb our pool of resources. Of course all these things should happen with a balanced view of the global market. Nothing should happen in such a way which will make us isolated from the global community. To me today, IT is incidentalwhere the larger context is the development infrastructure. We need investment in our roads, airports, railways, public transport, education, manufacturing, etc., than anything specific to taxation. The think tank should take cue from the countries like UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. and replicate in the larger context.

So the union budget 2015 should look at making ‘make in India’ to ‘made-in-India’ and digitisa-tion a priority. The railway budget is already out in the parliament. Good to know that in order to ensure safety and security, there is a proposal to install CCTVs in coaches and on stations and WIFI will be extended to category- B stations as well. Over and above Suresh Prabhu, the Union Minister for Railways has expressed an investment of Rs.850,000 crore in 5 years is likely towards the overall development of railways in India. ë

AVNET NAMED WINNER OF THE 2015 IBM CHOICE AWARDAvnet has been named winner of the 2015 IBM Choice Award for Most Outstanding Distributor – Asia Pacific at the IBM PartnerWorld Leadership Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Choice Awards, which are selected by IBM leadership in each geography, and given to Business Partners across a range of categories, is meant to recognize select IBM Business Partners who have displayed excellent performances in delivering IBM-based solutions, and helping clients to enjoy business growth.

With the award, the solid relation-ship between IBM and Avnet, which has been on-going for nearly 30 years, is both strengthened and affirmed.

The Choice Awards are selected by IBM leadership in each geography and are given to Business Partners across a range of categories, recognis-ing their working relationships with clients and demonstrated skills in selling IBM solutions.

“We’d like to extend our congratula-tions to Avnet Technology Solutions for being awarded a 2015 IBM Choice Award for Most Outstanding Distributor in Asia Pacific,” said Marc Dupaquier, general manager, IBM Global Business Partners. “With our joint focus on customer satisfaction, IBM and Avnet will continue to help our clients achieve higher value by delivering advanced technology solutions.”

Fortinet Joins VMware NSX Partner EcosystemFortinet said it has joined the VMware NSX partner ecosystem. Committed to providing lead-ing security solutions for virtualization, Fortinet also revealed its new FortiGate-VMX firewall appliance, which will enable greater security for customers within agile, elastic software-defined data centers based on VMware vSphere and VMware NSX virtualization platforms.

Rapid industry adoption of cloud and virtual infrastructure has created a need for transform-ing the way security is applied in the data center. With Fortinet’s new VMX solution, VMware vSphere and VMware NSX customers will be able to leverage Fortinet’s leading approach to security, which automates the orchestration of network security with seamless centralized management across physical and virtual domains.

“The SDDC promises a highly automated, easily managed platform that embraces and secures all applications, for fast, safe deployment across data centers, clouds and mobile devices,” said Rajesh Maurya, Country Manager, India &

SAARC at Fortinet. “Fortinet and VMware are uniquely positioned to deliver on this promise, providing the highest levels of security in virtual-ized environments.”

Today’s data center is rapidly changing in response to cloud, big data, software and infrastructure-as-a-service. Software Defined Networking and Software Defined Data Centers are also creating very dynamic environments which challenge the status quo of how network services are delivered.

In many data center environments, hardware security appliances are deployed at the aggrega-tion layer and can only see “north-south” traffic passing through the physical network. Con-versely, inter-VM traffic (i.e. “east-west” traffic) does not leave the virtual switch in the virtual host, and network virtualization and software-defined architectures further exacerbate the volume of virtual traffic.

The FortiGate-VMX firewall appliance will be available in March of this year.

2014 WAS THE YEAR OF IDENTITY THEFT: Gemalto releases the latest findings of the Breach Level Index, revealing that more than 1,500 data breaches led to one billion data records compromised worldwide during 2014. These numbers represent a 49% increase in data breaches and a 78% increase in data records that were either stolen or lost compared to 2013.

Continuing with this industry-leading benchmarking from SafeNet following its acquisition by Gemalto, the Breach Level Index (BLI) is a global database of data breaches as they happen and provides a methodology for security professionals to score the severity of breaches and see where they rank among publicly disclosed breaches. The BLI calculates the severity of data breaches across multiple dimensions based on breach disclosure information.

According to data in the BLI originally developed by SafeNet, the main motivation for cyber-criminals in 2014 was identity theft with 54% of the all data breaches being identity theft-based, more than any breach category including access to financial data.

Available On-Demand, the cloud based penetration testing offering has been developed with a combination of industry proven automated tools

and in-depth manual assessment techniques. This facilitates Zero False Positives and comprehensive business logic testing based on industry standard frameworks like OWASP, WASC, NIST, etc. and helps organizations meet regulatory requirements i.e. HIPAA Sarbanes-Oxley, GLBA and PCI.

T3600 and T1650 workstations and Dell OptiPlex 3020 desktops across its office alongside installing Dell AppAssure on a Dell Power-Edge R720 server with Intel Xeon processors and a Dell PowerVault NX400 network attached storage array for continuous protection of all their physical and virtual data.

“Enterprises today are faced with exponential data growth,

and therefore the need to keep the data safe at all times has become extremely imperative. With this kind of holistic approach, we give them the power to do more,” said Murli Mohan, Director & General Manager, Dell Software Group.

HID GLOBAL COMPLETES CONSOLIDATIONHID Global has completed the consolidation of its world headquarters and North American Operations Center. SMARTLINK TO DO LARGE SCALE IT MANUFACTURINGSmartlink is committed to govern-ment’s call of ‘Make in India’ and has always encouraged local manufac-turing in the Indian IT Sector. The company’s legacy of local manufac-turing dates back to a time when local manufacturing looked unfeasible which gave Smartlink an impetus. Smartlink Network Systems Ltd. today launched the next generation DG-HR3400 wireless router at its manufacturing plant in Goa.

Local manufacturing is a sure win-win formula as it would require designing and manufacturing for India by India.

“Smartlink was set up with a vision to manufacture IT products in India for India. We at Smartlink welcome the initiative of ‘Make in India’ campaign by the government and we want to extend our support by all means that we can. All our products are crafted and designed to bring convenience along with the best technologies for India and abroad. Even the branding campaigns have been designed in conjunction with government’s initiative. My IT journey started 4 decades back with mainframe computer development in the IBM days and I then entered in manufacturing personal computers about 3 decades back by importing wave soldering machine and subse-quently we introduced SMT line to use surface mount components with large scale manufacturing in Goa.” said K. ture must do more than simply pass packets at high speed; the network devices should play key a role in managing and supporting IoT without adding CapEx or OpEx overhead. Any partner currently trained on our existing infrastructure technologies are already well on their way to building a “sensor network” to support the IoT explosion.

Do you think state data centers would be sufficient to handle massive amounts of data that’ll be required to manage smart cities? What would be the needs of these new generation data centres? With the technology advancements of 100G and Moore’s law (speed doubling every two years while costs cut in half ), the raw bandwidth necessary to meet the demand should not be an issue of concern. However, securing such environments will be critical as the number of connected devices grows. The explosive growth of Machine-to-Machine communication driven by IoT needs to be monitored very closely and secured to protect confidentiality and privacy. New security paradigms will be invented to meet the scaling needs of future data centers.

What would be the key challenges when it comes to smart cities? As it relates to the network infrastructure critical to deploying a smart city, careful design will be critical. The fiber/copper cable distribution alone is complex and expensive to change after it’s been installed, so design and planning must be done right the first time.l Healthcare/ Education- How does

IT help in making these sectors smarter and more efficient. Delivering simple, fast and smart data access to ALL IP devices (including IoT) is the cornerstone to delivering better patient or student outcomes in hospitals and schools, respectively. The innovation velocity of devices and apps that are purpose built to deliver better healthcare and education continues to acceler-ate. However, without an efficient and scalable network infrastructure providing connectivity and access, this innovation cannot be realized.l Government – How does networking

help the Government sector in making processes for citizens easier Cloud-based applications built on top of high speed wired and wireless networks delivers simple access to online services that citizens can complete from home or anywhere with their mobile device. Self-service apps are the key enablers for delivering a better user (citizen) experience. ë

What areas of smart city would you be catering to? Please signify the importance of each of them? The underlying network infrastructure to a smart city will be critical in delivering IP access and bandwidth at scale, city wide. Similar to a “power grid” design, a data network for wired and wireless technology will deliver the base access required for all IP devices: smart phones, smart home and smart building technologies. Therefore, this infrastructure plays a vital role in the entire smart city design.

With millions and billions of

devices connected through the smart city network, what importance do you think sensors and sensor networks play? Are you looking at partnerships in this space? How do you plan to train your partner network for IoT?Extreme Networks has been at the forefront of building granular sensor technology into its infrastructure elements. A wireless access point or wired switch/router from Extreme is instrumented with sensor technology that provides deep insights into all connected devices, device types, location, and layer-7 application visibility and control. The biggest expectations for the IT industry will be to put teeth behind the two slogans of ‘Digital India’ and ‘Make in India’. A manufacturing revival in an IT savvy India would

be a tremendous multiplier for the Indian IT industry, unlike in China, where manufacturing took off without too much IT support, and China is only now (last 2-3 years) starting to focus on IT as a white-collar productivity effort. This can be a game changer for India in the inevitable India vs China comparisons and a huge boost for Indian competitiveness on the global landscape.

Similarly, the ‘Digital India’ initiative has huge ramifications for the Indian IT industry and Indian industry overall as well. It will (hopefully) been better access to the vast areas of untapped rural India, which can drive unprecedented economic growth across industry, by allowing companies across all industries to tap the elusive ‘bottom of the pyramid’ economic opportunity. Country level infrastructure improvements needed to drive ‘Digital India’ will also help spur industries embrace of the digital business paradigm, which will increasingly be a competi-tive imperative in the coming decade, as digital business hastens the demise of ‘geographical reach’ as a competitive barrier.

In order to achieve the above, the government needs to focus on the following, in order of priority:

- Time bound execution of all initiatives - This has been the governments Achilles heel forever! Even when the funds are available, the inability to get anything done in a reasonable time-frame has been the biggest barrier faced by Indian industry.

- Improving the FDI climate - To truly achieve

The Education System Needs a Major revampA manufacturing revival in an IT savvy India would be a tremendous multiplier for the Indian IT industry, unlike in China, where manufacturing took off without too much IT support.

“The ‘Digital India’ initiative has huge ramifications for the Indian IT industry and Indian industry overall as well.”

the promise of these two initiatives (and assum-ing point #1 above is addressed), massive FDI will be required to support the infrastructure revamp. This will involve streamlining policies, accelerat-ing reforms including (especially) tax reform amongst others.

- Education system & Human Capital - The Indian education system and the resultant workforce has moved from being an asset in the early days of the ‘offshoring’ IT wave to being a liability today. We produce armies of ‘doers’ when the need of the hour is to create larger numbers of ‘thinkers’ and ‘creative talent’. The education system needs a major revamp to move the next generation of students away from the ‘do as you are told’ mindset to one in which they are encouraged to ‘think for themselves’. We have hidden for too long behind the fig leaf of Indian culture and the ‘respect for authority’ which drives the ‘do as you are told’ mindset. It is time – indeed it is CRITICAL – that we move on from that outdated thinking and teach our students to challenge what they don’t understand or agree with. Given that this is a long-term initiative, in the short term the government, working with industry and academia will have to drive some short to medium term programs to create the required human capital, through training initiatives, encouraging (and maybe even promoting/requiring) internships through one’s academic career etc. Secondly, focusing on improving the legions of academic institutes that continue to churn out un-employable graduates needs to be addressed on a war footing. Gartner’s conservative estimate is that only 20-25% of India’s graduate pool is readily employable. This HAS to change. ë

density Wi-Fi can make sports fans winnersExtreme Networks rolled out the Baylor In-Game App, the first college athletics application to provide instant replays from multiple views to fans, at their seats. Gary Newbold, Vice President, Asia Pacific and Japan, Extreme Networks speaks more about the overall market-scape of these apps.

Imagine walking into the stadium precincts to watch your favourite sports team and your smartphone pings you that a $30 premium seat upgrade is available for purchase on your mobile device.

As soon as you settle in to enjoy that awesome view of the game, you use your phone to order a hamburger and beer delivered to your seat. Then, when your team’s star player scores a try, kicks a goal or hits a six, you use the team’s app to watch an instant replay at multiple angles and a stadium-exclusive video feed of players on the sideline. Later, when nature calls, the app directs you to the closest restroom with no wait time.

This isnot a far-fetched futuristic experience. It’s already available at some venues, and others are working to add next generation digital sys-tems that will make attending a game in person an immersive, connected experience.

At present this is all happening overseas, but Australian sports organisations have seen the technology in action, know the fans love it, and believe it can give their particular sport an edge.

In the USA, Extreme Networks hasannounced a strategic relationship with the current NFL Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks to deliver best-in-class Wi-Fi connectivity to fans at CenturyLink Field. Seahawks fans have a reputa-tion for rocking the 67,000-capacity stadiumwith one of the loudest sounds in NFL.In September 2013, during a game against the San Francisco 49ers, they broke the Guinness World Record for loudest crowd roar at an outdoor stadium with 136.6 decibels. It follows that they need the highest density WiFi!

The Seattle announcement follows recent deployments of Extreme Networks’ IdentiFi® Wi-Fi at other NFL stadiums - the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars will receive unparalleled mobile connectivity attheirEverBank Field stadium, capacity 67,000. They will use IdentiFi® Wire-less, along with SignalShare’s Live-Fi™ audience engagement platform, to deliver an enhanced user experience to fans. Extreme’s highly scalable solution will also act as a delivery platform for the Jaguars’ application, which offers exclusive content and special offers to thousands of fans.

Baylor University was an early Wi-Fi adopter at its new $US260 million on-campus McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, which holds 45,000 fans. The stadium has been outfitted with a robust Wi-Fi network and custom mobile applications that enhance the in-game fan experience.

Extreme Networks rolled out the Baylor In-Game App, the first college athletics application to provide instant replays from multiple views to fans, at their seats. This combination of Extreme’s Wi-Fi gear, software applications and content is the same technology used by the world’s leading professional sports teams.

Benefiting from a vision of an immersive experience, Baylor fans are enjoyingthe freedom of using their wireless devices –smartphone, tablet or laptop computer – to access customised applications like the Baylor In-Game App that enriches their experience through in-seat mobile video replays, team information, customised camera angles and up-to-the-minute real-time statistics.

The appallows fans to download in the stadium to watch videos, news and in-seat replays of the action from multiple views over the Wi-Fi network, and to follow key real-time statistics of the action. Fans can stay connected to their team 24x7 through the In-game app.

Key enablers for the immersive sports stadium experience are the ultra-fast 802.11ac

wireless network standard introduced recently, and Extreme Networks’ 3865 802.11ac WLAN outdoor access point, a key addition to the company’s IdentiFi Wireless LAN portfolio. IdentiFihas become the most complete and scal-able enterprise Wi-Fi solution addressing both indoor and outdoor wireless connectivity.

The Extreme Wi-Fi system is designed to support high density requirements, including high-speed connections for streaming content and uploading photos, support of social engage-ment, in-venue mobile application delivery.

The ultimate fan experience uses a hand-picked collection of innovative technology that allows fans to stay connected with the ultra-fast Wi-Fi network as well as a robust cellular distrib-uted antenna system. Fans can direct their own mobile experience using in-game applications throughout a stadium.

According to one sports administrator, an in-game app represents a fan’s one-stop shop for anything and everything they need to know about their team. Fans can access video on their iPhones, iPads or Android devices, and they can watch the same program feed that is on the stadium video board, or they can choose from other cameras that will be streaming live all the time.

It is like having a DVR remote on a fan’s phone where he or she can watch replays and highlights from aseat in the stadium. The technology has been described as one of the most exciting expe-riences in sport, and a ‘must have’ that brings fans closer to the action whenever they attend a game, and also allows them to access real-time statistics, news, multimedia content, streaming radio, and more.Since sports administrators globally are keen on delivering a premium experience to their customers, this technology is fast making sports fans the winners. ë

With the advent of virtualization and the associated move of hosting multiple virtual machines on a single server, many of the problems related to IT infrastruc-ture have now disappeared. Virtualization

Many Indian IT organizations believe that a virtualization strategy can move them up the virtualization curve to the dynamic datacenter as their future. CIOs are looking to virtu-alization to improve operational efficiency, improve utilization and reduce hardware and reduce capital costs. While contain-ing costs is currently a critical metric for every IT organization, many customers are also anticipating the increased flexibility and responsiveness to meet dynamic business requirements the real value of transforming their current IT environment.Depending on their respective strategies, organizations are adopting open source or propriety virtualization architectures.

Market research firm IDC estimates that the economic impact of server virtualization in India will be $3.89 billion by 2020. This takes into account the money that can be saved in servers, power, cooling and real-estate. According to Gartner,

by 2015, almost 20% of overall VPN / Firewall market will be deployed using virtual infrastructure and 100% of overall IT security product capabilities will be delivered from the cloud.

Gartner also estimates the public cloud services market in India to reach $1.9 billion by 2018, of which infrastructure as a service (IaaS) will account for about $300 million.

Some service providers have taken the logical next steps toward making their data center more automated and efficient. “The need for meeting these sudden and quick demands from businesses is driving the next thinking and actions toward building a more elastic, agile and dynamic data center. Some enterprises have also gone ahead with plans to create a private cloud platform to transform their internal IT from silos of hardware, software and applications to a converged data center providing IT as a service,” a Gartner report emphasis.

In terms of Cloud Computing, India is all set to launch itself into the skies and stay there for a long time to come. “Even though enterprise CIOs have been skeptical with cloud computing making significant inroads in the marketplace, given the key concerns pertaining to security, compliance, out-ages and data proliferation, cloud computing in India is at an inflection point today, said Abhilash Purushothaman, Country

Director, Enterprise Management Business at CA Technologies.

IT organizations today wantagility and efficiency for their critical business services that increasingly span physical, virtual and external resources and has led this shift into new IT delivery models. IDC sees the cloud segment in

India clocking a whopping $3.5 billion by the year 2016, five times more than the $688 million it clocked in 2012.

“About 20-25% of large outsourcing deals in India already involve the cloud. In addition to this, investments of cloud services providers in the country are growing phenomenally,”

Purushothaman said.According to Gartner, almost two-thirds of

Indian CIOs will run and manage their busi-nesses via cloud computing in the next two years. Apart from the escalating cloud adoption, the market also expects scalability, cost efficiency and pay-per-use pricing models from cloud service providers. All these numbers point to the fact that India stands at a cusp of a cloud revolution which is transforming the way we conduct our business operations by the minute.

MAXIMIZING BENEFITIt is apparent that virtualization and cloud computing are quickly becoming indispensable tools for IT. “However, in order to optimize benefits and address IT concerns, it is essential for enterprises and CIOs to keep in mind a few metrics while making the decision to virtualize and while associating with the vendor,” according to Tarun Kaura, Director – Technology Sales, India, Symantec. As per Symantec the following four key metrics can ensure the adoption of a virtualized solution provides the most business benefits. l Ensure alignment between IT and

executives in virtualization and cloud initiatives to showcase that IT can address C-level concerns such as security and availability l Vendor solutions should integrate

with existing infrastructure and departments inclusive of planning and implementation as virtualization and cloud initiatives are most successful when implemented as mainstream, comprehensive IT initiatives as they involve all aspects of IT (servers, storage, network, applica-tions etc) l Businesses should modernize the

TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATIONServer Virtualization: It is one of the most popular initiatives for small & medium enterprises. It enables organizations to consoli-date space, reduce costs and energy consumption, as well as improve their ability to manage important IT resources.Desktop Virtualization: This system involves transmitting a desktop’s traditional operating system to a virtual one. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system within a virtual machine (VM) running on a central-ized server. While the computer remains on your desk, the operating system is hosted on a server in another location. In the past couple of years, some large Indian organizations have turned to VDI as an alternative to the server-based computing model.Hardware Virtualization: This involves taking the components of a machine and making them virtual; hardware virtualization separates software from hardware resources, while the software remains on the physical machines.Storage Virtualization: Storage virtualization is the easiest and most cost-effective type of virtualization to implement. It involves compiling multiple physical hard drives into a single virtualized storage environment. It is quite similar to cloud storage, which can be private or public, or a hybrid of both private and public clouds. This is the most popular type of Virtualization adopted by majority of businesses.

SMBS, THE GROWTH DRIVERIn India, there are significant growth opportuni-ties across server, desktop and storage virtualiza-tion. Of the total IT installed base in the country, only 5 to 10 percent have been virtualized so far. Through secondary research, AMI has concluded that the small and medium business segment comprises about 30 percent of the India virtual-ization market and is likely to grow exponentially in the next few years. This growth will be driven by a need to increase operational efficiencies. The size of this untapped market is considerable,

presenting a huge growth potential for leading participants in the market.

IT and IT-enabled services have been early adopters of virtualization, followed by the pharmaceutical, telecommunication and bank-ing/financial services and insurance verticals. In the past server virtualization was the more readily adopted technology among India SMBs. However, desktop virtualization has gained popularity in the recent past due to its operational

advantages. Large enterprises in India have also embraced this solution because there is a need to move mission-critical applications to virtualization.

Given, the plethora of benefits that virtualiza-tion offers to both SMBs as well as enterprises, it represents a huge opportunity for partners, who can build niche services for different kinds of virtualization and position them as cost-cutting solutions. ë

It is an exciting time ahead for us in the domestic market

“As the Government gears up for 100 pilot smart cities projects in India, Information and communication technologies (ICT) will play a crucial role as the communication infrastructure acts as the backbone. As an IoT Platform and solutions provider rooted in India, it is an exciting time ahead for us in the domestic market as the Department of Telecom has already drifted an IoT policy draft. We can also expect a greater convergence of smart city and smart grids in near future to improve energy efficiency, enhance grid security, and optimize energy distribution pro-

cess. One step closer, we expect the Government to boost IoT by funding incubation and research centres. We are also anticipating ambitious plans around Digital India to foster economic growth and smart governance. As we look forward to 2015, we foresee a connected India with digital literacy reaching even to the bottom of the pyramid.” ë

To incentivise SMEs and Entrepreneurial Culture in the Country

In keeping with the Prime Minister’s initiatives of Make in India and Digital India, I would expect a qualified emphasis in the 2015 Budget on providing incentives to young entrepreneurs and the Information Technology SME sector in the Country.

In the recent past most Government Policy seems to have focussed on big businesses. What India really needs is to address the concerns of the SME sector which employs 40% of the Indian workforce and enable them to compete with firms across the world. Fiscal innovation and

administrative support to the India’s SME sector will go a long way in allowing them to compete in an increasingly global market place.

Entrepreneurs in advanced countries have been at the forefront of thought leadership and more importantly, have developed a culture of innovation and creative enterprise in business. India needs to have a plan around a start-up fund to promote similar Digital Entrepreneurship ideas under a panel that comprises creative think-ers and social scientists rather than a convention of bankers and financial analysts. ë

I Expect the Budget to Boost the Job Sector

is really a shot in the arm for entrepreneurs, job seekers, as well as cities like Bangalore that provide a sound startup ecosystem. I expect more focus on startups, as well as on sectors like IT/ITeS that employ millions. I think we also need more clarity on issues like taxation, and incentives to ease the process of doing business. Moreover, I feel there should be tax rebates given for investing in skills training, since upgradation of skills is a necessity for industries that are constantly on the lookout for talent to fuel growth.

To boost the job sector, I think the government should introduce life and medical cover for all salaried employees who are also tax payers. A graded approach should be announced-whereby those paying more tax should be entitled to higher coverage. Moreover, there should be an introduction of insurance for salaried employees (who are also tax payers) to cover for instances of unplanned termination of jobs. Measures like these will help in drastically reducing anxiety and stress amongst our workforce. l Topping my list of expectations this

Budget is the introduction of life and medical insurance coverage for all salaried employees who are tax payers. Today there is no social security other than the PF contribution, and some tax exemptions. The government needs to take

certain responsibility towards citizens who earn an income and are also tax payers. l All salaried people who are tax payers

should be covered for instances of redundancy or unplanned termination of their jobs. If an employee is deemed redundant, it implies that the job he or she was doing is no longer required. Today it’s nowhere mandated to provide coverage for either redundancy or sudden termination of employment. I earnestly feel that coverages for life, medical and redundancy should be somewhere built into the budget. l Section 35CCD of the Income Tax Act,

1961, mentions that if companies are investing in skill development, the company will be entitled to a higher weighted deduction of this expenditure. The notification issued so far, does not include IT companies in its coverage. I feel that IT compa-nies should be included under the scope of this provision as it will encourage IT firms to invest more in skill development, which in turn will help to achieve the objective of Digital India and Smart Indian Cities. l Today we have maximum income tax

of 30%. But there is surcharge on education cess which takes the maximum tax bracket to 33%. This should be brought down to 30%, so that some people get a 3% rebate. ë

There is a strong sense of optimism in the job market and the economy seems to be on the upswing. I expect the budget to boost the job sector and hiring to pick up significantly across sectors and industries. India’s GDP growth is projected to rise to 6.5% in 2015-16, and this will imply good news for job seekers at all levels, especially freshers. There is a lot of expectation from this government and I feel the initiatives and reforms that will be announced should positively impact jobs. During the last budget, the government laid emphasis on startups, which

Enterprise Solutions, and VMware announced their intent to create an industry association, identified as the Open Data Platform (“ODP”). The Open Data Platform will promote big data technologies based on open source software from theApache Hadoop ecosystem and optimize testing among and across the ecosystem’s vendors. These efforts will accelerate the ability of enterprises to build or implement data-driven applications.

As off-the-shelf big data technologies continue to attract the interest of enterprises, these leaders are coming together to help maximize big data adoption and productivity. Companies in the Open Data Platform initiative will concentrate their efforts first on developing and using offer-ings focused on core Apache Hadoop use cases. The Open Data Platform will provide access to a tested reference core of Apache Hadoop, Apache Ambari and related Apache source artifacts, which will simplify upstream and downstream qualification efforts - giving the industry a coveted “test once, use everywhere” core platform.

The ODP will work directly with specific Apache projects, adhering to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) guidelines for the contribution of ideas and code. A key benefit of the ODP will be for members to collaborate across various Apache projects as well as other open source-licensed big data projects with a goal toward meeting enterprise class requirements. The ODP is expected to promote a set of standard open source technologies and versions that will increase compatibility among big data solutions and simplify the process for applications and tools to integrate with and run on any compliant system. ë

ALCATEL-LUCENT

A study by Bell Labs, the industrial research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, has identified that network operators who use converged IP and optical transport tech-

nologies can significantly ease the burden being placed on their infrastructure by demands for capacity caused by the explosion of bandwidth-hungry applications.

The study, which is published today, looked to determine if and how converged IP/opti-cal control integration could reduce network resource requirements without compromising service availability. This was done by comparing the relative cost of integrating and coordinating resiliency methods in both the IP routing and optical transport network. Resilience is the network’s ability to resume normal operations if a failure occurs and is an essential component of an operator’s highly reliable network.

The results show that by converging routing and optical transport technologies operators can meet the same requirements for service availability while using up to 40% less network resources, such as 100G router ports and optical transponders.

Through the study, researchers successfully uncovered the potential cost benefits using a converged operation of routing and optical transport in an integrated multilayer network model. The study shows that:l An integrated resiliency strategy

“We are always looking for ways to help our customers maximize their network infrastructure in order to prepare for the growing demand for the digital delivery of everything, as well as to deliver the best possible experience for users and their multiple connected devices. This research underscores the innovative thinking for which Bell Labs is world-renowned, as well as how Alcatel-Lucent is uniquely positioned to serve the needs of service providers and enterprise customers.”

service availability l Introducing protection for the optical

layer based on GMPLS (Generalized Multipro-tocol Label Switching) allows service providers to meet the same availability levels achieved by routing protection methods based on MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), with total savings up to 40% on router ports and optical transponders over a five year period. l The combination of IP and optical

transport layer protection with a GMPLS user network interface (UNI) allows service providers to accelerate these savings by freeing up a third of deployed network capacity and provide headroom for two years of traffic growth.

Furthermore, by establishing an integrated multi-layer control plane now, a cloud-optimized network can easily be achieved down the line. To do this, service providers can do the following:

1. Introduce an Agile Optical Network with a dynamic GMPLS control plane

2. Extend optical transport layer control to the IP routing layer with GMPLS UNI

3. Provide open, programmable Software Defined Network (SDN) interfaces based on open standards

The result is an integrated multi-layer network with a unified control plane, with immediate cost benefits from better network utilization and operational efficiencies. Total cost of ownership savings may vary based on the topology size, connectivity and traffic mix. ë

The sheer number of headlines made by data breaches, targeted attacks and cyber espionages in 2014 is enough to drive home the impact cyber-attacks have on enter-prises today.Last year witnessed some of the biggest names among the financial institutions, retail chains and large media companies at the receiving end of large-scale data breaches - indicating that with the growing digitization, there are now more avenues for cyber-criminals to attack critical data. According to Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR) Vol. 19, despite corporates stepping up information security measures, businesses in India continued to be a hot target for cybercriminals, with 69 percent of targeted attacks in India focused on large enterprises the implications of which were far damaging.Though planning and implementing such large format sophisticated attacks may sound complicated, reports indicate that some of the tools required are availableat rock-bottom prices in theunderground black markets.

MODUS OPERANDI: ADVANCED PERSIS-TENT THREATS (APT)A decade ago, the biggest risk from a bad virus was a temporarily disabled computer and some lost files. Today, targeted attacks are on the rise and APTs, widely used for data breaches and cyber-espionage, pose a real threat for organizations. Traditional cyber-attacks employ “smash and grab” tactics. By con-trast, APT-style attackers are willing to be more patient as they craft their attack strategy and wait till the reward grows bigger, better, sweeter. They break into the target network in well-calibrated phases - Recon-naissance, Incursion, Discovery, Capture and Exfiltration – elude detection, and harvest valuable information over the long term.

Reconnaissance, the most important phase to start the attack, is the phase when the attacker lever-ages information from different factors to understand their target. The next phase called Incursion is when the attackers inject the malware through the recently found vulnerabilities in the systems or

people. Discovery, another crucial step is when the attacker has now become an insider, studying the internal defense systems of the target organization to craft his next move and to stay undetected. After studying the systems well, the attacker launches his attacks in the Capture phase by gathering all the information he wants to steal or install a malware to disrupt company operations. Exfiltration is another important step for attackers, as in this phase they send all the captured information to their home base for further analysis and exploitation without detection.

SOLUTION: ADVANCED THREAT PROTECTION (ATP)According to ISTR: 2013 stood out as the year of mega breaches, with more than 552 million identities exposed globally and targeted attacks growing by 91 percent from the previous year. With cybercriminals proving more and more ruthless and far-reaching in their impact, only an integrated solution can help protect against

the multitude of incoming cyber threats. This being the case, every business must be able to identify incoming attacks and respond to them seamlessly without suffering downtime. Today, IT departments are grappling with growing inci-dence of advanced cybercrimes and too many false positives. Working through a laundry list of manual processes without the appropriate staffing and skill sets needed to win, leave organizations exposed and vulnerable. In such a scenario, businesses can find shelter with a security expert that can significantly reduce time taken todeal with security incidents by correlating endpoint and network detections. This security expert coupled with a global intelligence network and advanced security technology helps the enterprises with trends on new and evolving threats, providing detailed intelligence and a heads-up to fight incoming attacks. Therefore, there is a greater need for enter-prises to build a security layer that not only prevents an attack but prevents, detects and respondsto them. ë
