A big thanks to all of the players who made it out to Tucson for the Diamond Pool Tour’s season finale. The new season is tentatively kicking off March 19th - 20th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. More info next month.

Speaking of pool tours, the AWBT kicks off their season February 27th - 28th at Bullshooters.

Even with all of the politics involved in local pool, when one of our own is in need of assistance, we always come to their aid. Kitty Carroll has been a supporter of local pool for longer than some of our faithful readers have been alive, and she needs our help. Check out page four this month for more info.

Also check out page 14 for a little info on the Az Senior Olympics. Pool is on the schedule this year.

-Until next time Mike

Jose Luis De La Luz & Matt Lee

De La Luz & Lee Win at Metro

Although Matt Lee & Jose Luis De La Luz took first place undefeated at Metro Sportz Bar’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on January 30th, it was the sec-ond place team of Hopell Ampongan and Joseph Farias who earned the lion’s share of the prize money.

Matt & Jose cruised through a field of 26 other teams and took the hot-seat with an 8-4 win over Hopell & Joseph.

On the one loss side, Hopell & Joseph found Bob Mizer & Nate Johnson wait-ing for them. Bob & Nate had just eliminated Jon Naumann & Ryan Long, and were looking to do the same to Hopell & Joseph. The match would go hill-hill, but it would be Hopell & Joseph moving on to the finals.

In the finals, Matt & Jose got to the hill first at 7-6, but the match then went hill-hill before they won an extended safety battle and navigated a tricky last couple balls to earn the hill-hill victory in one set.

Complete Payouts:1st Matt Lee & Jose Luis De La Luz $420 (no side pots)2nd Hopell Ampongan and Joseph Farias $930 (all side pots)3rd Bob Mizer & Nate Johnson $2854th Jon Naumann & Ryan Long $180

Tyson Cole Back in Knobbys Winners Circle

Tyson Cole held off Bruce Hirose to take first place at Knobbys’ 9 & Under 8-Ball Tournament on January 8th.

Tyson sent Bruce to the one loss side in the second round, and then went on to take the hot-seat with a win over Ed Scott.

On the one loss side, Bruce defeated Scott Perry, Nigel Francis and then Ed Scott to earn a rematch with Tyson in the finals.

Hirose would push the finals to two sets by defeating Cole in the first set, but it was Cole scoring the win in set #2 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Tyson Cole $1302nd Bruce Hirose $60

A total of 58 “A” and “B” players made their way out to Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson on January 7th - 10th to help the Diamond Pool Tour wind up their 2015 season. Once again, Scott Frost displayed his dominance on the table, but there was much more than just the $4000 added main event going on over this four day weekend.

The festivities kicked off on Thursday with a free banquet for all of the players, provided by Casino Del Sol Resort. The banquet saw top junior, Nick Kline, and Top “B” player, Joey Barrera, presented with beautiful new cues, courtesy of tour sponsor QB Custom Cues. After taking some time to let all of the players “ooh” and “aah” over the cues, Kline put his to use in a challenge match against Oscar Avila Jr. Avila showed his top game as he won the challenge match 7-3. Another challenge match on Thursday night saw Bernie Store defeat Heather Cortez 9-6. In addition to the challenge matches and an evening of mini tourna-ments, the drawing was held to determine the winner of the Diamond pool table, courtesy of Diamond Billiard Products. That lucky winner was Tucson’s own Mike Hamman.

Friday saw mini tournaments throughout the day, along with the presentation of the beautiful custom cases to top “A” player Brian Reich and top “B” player Joey Barrera. The main event kicked off early Friday evening with a field split between 17 “A” players and 41 “B” players. As if the mini tournaments and main event weren’t enough, a six man 10-ball ring game was held late Friday with Gus Briseno emerging as the winner of that event.

The “A” bracket saw Scott Frost motor through his half of the bracket, with wins over Tim Daniel, Rudy Alameda and Brian Reich. Making his way through the other half of the bracket was Chris Adams, with wins over Tres Kane, George Teyechea and Joven Bustamante. Frost was in top gear, as he took the “A” bracket hot-seat with a 9-0 win over Adams. Brian Reich emerged from the one loss side to move to the final bracket, with wins over Teyechea, Busta-mante and Adams.

For the second straight tournament, Tucson’s Aaron Purdy came out on top of the “B” bracket. Purdy beat top “B” player Joey Barrera, and then got past Michael Dale and Burt Balancad in back-to-back hill-hill matches. Purdy then sent Scott Vogelsberg to the left side of the board 9-4. Purdy then took the “B” bracket hot-seat with a 9-8 win over Jose Mendoza. Mendoza would be elimi-nated on the left side of the board by Art St. Germaine, as part of a seven match winning streak.

The overall hot-seat came down to Frost and Purdy for the second straight event, and Purdy gave Frost all he could handle before dropping the match 9-7. Reich eliminated St Germaine in fourth place 9-5. Not content with just play-ing Frost once, Purdy then eliminated Reich 9-6 to earn his rematch with The Freezer in the finals.

Building on his close match for the hot-seat, Purdy beat Frost 9-5 in the first set of the finals, but dropped the second set 9-3 and settled for his second consecu-tive runner-up finish.

The success of the Diamond Pool Tour in 2015 would not have been possible without the sponsors or the players. The contributions from all of the sponsors made each event happen and the players came out to support each and every event. A total of 246 players came out to play in at least one stop, and tour orga-nizers hope to see even more participation in 2016.

The Tour’s 2016 schedule was not finalized at press time, but the first event is tentatively scheduled for March 19th - 20th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. The Diamond Pool Tour is proudly sponsored by:

Are You A Player?

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.” That was the sage advice offered by Fast Eddie to his protégé Vince in the 1986 movie, The Color of Money. In the movie, Paul Newman played the role of Fast Eddie Felson, a former top road player who was mentoring young Vince (Tom Cruise) in the fine art of pool hustling. Eddie was trying to transform Vince from someone who was content to just “play-play” into someone who played for only one purpose – to get the cash. He wanted to show Vince how to be a real player.

It hasn’t been until recently that I have given the word “player” much thought. I had always been under the impression that anyone who played any game, was a player. It wasn’t until being given the word “player” as a clue for the seven-letter word gambler in a crossword puzzle that I came to realize that many people consider the two words synonymous. In check-ing with a dictionary, I found this to be true; one of the definitions for player is, “a gam-bler.”

Now let’s take a look at the root of the word player, which would be – play. In consulting any dictionary you will find that this word can be used as a verb or as a noun, and can have a multitude of applications. But one thing of

interest here is the fact that nowhere will you find the word work associated with the word play. Those two words are complete opposites. Well, that’s true on the surface, anyway.

All pool enthusiasts start out with one purpose in mind: to have fun. All they want to do is play. But those who wish to make it to the top can’t possibly get there without putting in a lot of work. And working at pool means making large time investments and some considerable money investments. For single people with few or no responsibilities, that’s not a huge problem. What they spend their time and mon-ey on is no one’s business but their own. But for pool addicts who have spousal, parental, and job responsibilities, their time and money does not belong solely to them, and both must be managed very carefully.

The solution for many of these “tied down” wannabees is to find a way to make money off of the game itself. Doing so gives them an excuse to spend considerable amounts of time in the pool room while helping to keep their significant others off their backs. It’s a justification, so to speak. A few of the second-ary occupations undertaken by these people have been: cue building, tournament directing, newspaper publishing, league operating, cue

dealing, and table recovering.

But again, the aforementioned “occupations” require more work than they do play. There-fore, many people opt to take the route that involves more play than work. And that route is, gambling. Gambling at pool is their pri-mary goal, but it’s not always the only form of gambling they partake in. That doesn’t matter, however, as long they accomplish their goal of staying in the pool room and playing.

Personally, I’ve never been particularly drawn to gambling at pool. That’s not to say that I haven’t done it, it’s just to say that I’ve never enjoyed it. I never enjoyed taking another person’s money, and I certainly didn’t enjoy them taking mine. Today, I won’t gamble for one cent. For me, gambling takes the fun out of the game and brings seriousness into it. And that’s not play.

So…I don’t care what the dictionary says, I think the person who plays for fun is more of a player than the person who plays for money.

Road Trip

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

All my life, playing pool and road trips have went hand in hand. Mostly I would hear about a tournament and make a plan to attend. Since I grew up in a small town on the Oregon coast, bigger tournaments were inland in towns on interstate I-5.

Looking back on the process, it was always the same. First find a road partner, which was harder than it seems. Any pool players out there with a good or great road partner, hold on to them. It is hard to find someone you can be in close quarters with and have a little money plus the time off work. The other part of the formula included more practice, which lead to self-doubt when practice failed to produce stellar results. Telling myself why I would be going to a bigger tournament if I couldn’t even run a simple out.

Once at the event, going two and out was a common theme. Which I would treat as a failure and try to figure out the secret combination to playing well. The years of playing tournaments on the road or locally have taught me the key to any situation is make it work for you. I had decided a long time ago I would never go pro or make a living in the billiard industry but now my road trips have multiple rewards. I also no-tice how many players a lot better than myself

would ever be, go two and out or have poor results in tournaments.

Over the years I have refined the process, found - and married - the ultimate road partner. On multiple occasion, I will come home and tell her of a tournament on short notice and we make it happen. Now days it is not about my level of play I now focus on my level of enjoyment.

I was able to take the ultimate road trip in 2015 on Halloween. A little back-story is in order. I have traveled all over the west coast playing events and seeing new pool halls which most have closed over the years. Now here in the Phoenix AZ area I have not had to travel as much to due to the fact that I have never lived anywhere with so many pool venues and events.

In addition to having more fulltime roles in my career, travel is limited. I have discovered the billiard channel and kept seeing matches of all the greatest players at a pool hall in Astoria New York. The pool hall was named Steinway billiards and they have pictures of pool balls on the carpet. Watching a match one night I told my road partner that we should go there for their Steinway open in a few weeks. I was half joking and sixty percent dreaming when I made

that statement but low and behold she came up with a smoking good deal for direct flights to New York and we flew in Halloween night 2015.

I have always enjoy the thrill of seeing new pool halls with different equipment, people and player history and skill levels. Steinway bil-liards did not disappoint, with the nicest people and players and the best food I ever had in a pool hall. I have always heard how fresh and legendary the New York food has been, but the surprise to me was the options at the pool hall. We had a wide variety of homemade dishes that I have never seen offered in a pool hall. The food, tables and people were the greatest and made our experience wonderful.

I encourage all players to road trip to new rooms and for events, you can learn so much by meeting new players and playing on different equipment. Of course, if you get to visit Stein-way billiards you would not be disappointed.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News February 2016

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Fall 8 Ball and 9 Ball Tri-Cities tournaments last month at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 48 teams in all from all over Maricopa County showed up for 2 weekends to compete for a chance to play in Las Vegas this coming August at the APA National Team Championships. 12 teams from these tournaments will advance to the year-end ‘Cities’ tournament In June. APA’s ‘Road to Vegas’ tournament series will ultimately produce 3 Eight Ball teams and 2 Nine Ball teams that will have a paid trip to Las Vegas to compete in the ‘World’s Largest Pool Tourna-ment’. The APA National Team Championships will be held at the Westgate Hotel and Casino for the 2nd year in a row.

APA holds their 2 National events every year in Las Vegas during the month of August and are listed in the Guinness book of world records as

the largest pool tournament in the world. The first step in the year long “Road To Vegas “series is the 3 Tri-City events held at the end of each of the three sessions. The last event of the year will be held in May and will produce another 12 teams for the second step in the se-ries, the Cities event. During the Cities event, a total of 24 Eight Ball and 12 Nine Ball teams will compete for those 5 important paid slots to play in Vegas.

Other events in our ‘Road to Vegas’ series include a tournament for the Ladies Only division, which will send one of the 3 person ladies teams, 2 Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles team, several 8 ball and 9 ball doubles teams, and a Masters team. All 5 person teams earning their spot to Vegas are given travel money, a paid room while they are participating in their event and a paid entry into that event.

APA teams consist of 5 to 8 Players of all different skill levels and age groups. The great thing about the APA

pool league is that each team must have as many beginner players as they have good players. Teams are structured in such a way that the lower skilled players are just as important to a team as the higher level players. In fact, many teams that play APA are family teams. Gina Nowlin, the league operator for the phoenix and Maricopa County APA, says ‘We have teams that consist of the Mom, Dad, kids and grandkids’. These families use their pool night to get out of the house and have some fun together, she said. The handicapped league insures that all players, no matter what their skill level, have an equal chance of winning. The APA’s Equalizer Handicap System is the fairest handicapping sys-tem available.

Congratulations to all the winning teams and all the teams that attended the tournament. You were among some of the best teams we have.

Evan Brinkmann bounced back from a hot-seat loss, to avenge that loss and split first and second with Jerry Stuckart the the second of Arizona’s big $1,000 added Fargorate events at Skip & Jan’s on January 23rd.

The event drew a field of 37 players ranging from a Fargo rating of 398 (Jamie Goodwin) to 692 (Tim Daniel). While top seed Tim Daniel was able to fade a 7-4 race against Steve Blackburn, a 7-2 race against Chuck Bowers was too much for him. Daniel would then drop a 7-5 race to Art St. Germaine on the one loss side.

The winner’s side came down to Brinkmann and Jerry Stuckart, with Stuckart giving up one game in a race to seven. Stuckart would have no problems with the race, as he easily won 7-1.

On the one loss side, it was Tim Benally who was the man to beat. After a loss to Mike Luta, Benally had won six straight matches, and was looking to make Brinkmann #7. The 7-4 race would go hill-hill before Brinkmann pulled it out.

The first set of the finals rematch between Brinkmann and Stuckart went to Brinkmann 6-5, and the two players agreed on a split from there.

The event was another chance for players to get a taste of the Fargorate system, that is taking the pool world by storm. Many local rooms have converted their events over to the Fargorate system, and the upcoming BCA Nationals will also be using the system. The $1,000 in added prize money was made possible by Skip & Jan’s, as well as the BCA League System. The next $1,000 added Fargo-rate event will be at Pockets in Tucson, on February 20th.

More information on the Fargorate system can be found online at www.fargorate.com

Adams Wins at Stingers

Chris Adams completed an undefeated run through a very competitive 9’s & Under 9-Ball event at Stingers on January 30th.

It was smooth sailing to the hot-seat match for Adams, as he won his first three matches by a combined score of 21-5. His opponent for the hot-seat, Jose Gon-zalez, was challenged a little more as he turned in a combined score of 21-13 in his first three matches.

Adams might have been the favorite based on earlier performances in the event, but the hot-seat match went the distance with Adams scoring the 7-6 win.

On the one loss side, Jason Sweet came back from a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Adams, to defeat Alex Esparza and Ben Sutherland before losing to Gonzalez 7-2.

That set up a rematch between Gonzalez and Adams in the finals. The finals went one set and was almost as close, with Adams scoring a 7-5 win for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Chris Adams $290 3rd Jason Sweet $802nd Jose Gonzalez $195 4th Ben Sutherland $50

On the one loss side. Team Avila was still knocking them dead. After winning six straight matches, they defeated Joe & Ed 7-2 for their seventh straight win.

The double elimination final would only go one set with Team Avila winning 7-1, and the players agreeing on a split after that.

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

February 2016 has struck and Phoenix Foos-ers are keeping the Interim League, Saturday Scrimmages, and weekend tourneys at Duke’s Sports Bar, Stingers Sports Bar, and The Loft Again busy with aspiring and veteran players looking to advance their game and win a little money while doing so. January hosted a very successful Super Doubles tournament that drew a few teams from out of town in the two day event. In addition, the new King of the Ring singles competition wrapped up the final contest but the finals won’t be played until after the February ‘Pulse’ is published.

Interim League/Saturday Scrimmages

As you might decipher from the title, the Interim League is a weekly competition that fills the void between seasonal league play. There have been 15 events since the end of last season and Foos Bowl XIV with 64 different players partaking in the weekly fun. For those of you not familiar with it each event will offer a league-style event as well as pick-up games, and an opportunity to meet all league play-ers, introduce new players to the league, win prizes, and just have some great foosball fun and exchange banter.

Also included as part of the Interim League play is Saturday Scrimmages. As stated on our website, www.ArizonaFoosball.com, “Satur-day Scrimmages have been targeted for new and rookie players and will feature weekly lessons by local experts and professionals. The Arizona Foosball League point handicapping system will be utilized, allowing both veterans and rookies to participate on an even field.”

Currently the top 10 with the highest winning percentages are:1. Bryan Hendricks: 0.9332. Rick Weirman: 0.8093. Rissa Veloso: 0.7334. Paul Freund: 0.7135. Jim King: 0.6926. Rulon Smith: 0.6917. Chris Petit: 0.6898. Bob Duncan: 0.6529. Billy Nolan: 0.63210. Brain Sternberg: 0.603

Super Doubles

Super Doubles was a Bring-Your-Partner event

with 4 divisions: Beginner, Amateur, Expert, and Pro spread over two days on January 15th and 16th. The winner of each division then entered a single-elimination, head-to-head, handicapped tournament to decide the overall winner. This event also had teams from El Paso, Las Vegas, and Tucson take their shot at the crown. In all, there were 39 teams playing across the four classifications trying to capture a portion of the prize money.

Following are results: Beginners: 1st: Matt C & Del C 2nd: Paul F & Rick W 3rd: Josh & Tyler Amateurs: 1st: Chris P & Ash M 2nd: Steve M & Holly M 3rd: Mile J & Jim K Experts: 1st: Brad C & Ricky C 2nd: Chris P & Ash M 3rd: Doug S & JB Open Doubles: 1st: Nick B & Randy S 2nd: Zeke C & Michael M 3rd: Brad C & Ricky C 4th: Cory J & Erick S Super Doubles Final 1st: Nick B & Randy S 2nd: Brad C & Ricky C 3rd: Matt C & Del C 4th: Chris P & Ash M

King of the Ring

The King of the Ring wrapped on January 29 after 15 events and skill levels ranging from Beginner to Pro. For those of you that missed last month’s edition of the ‘Pulse’, the King of the Ring was a new Singles tournament with a unique twist to the playoff format, that being the top six finishing players (most points) are invited to a playoff in a handicapped round-robin format. Pros must score 8, Experts 7, Amateurs 6, and Beginners 5. After the round-robin, the top two will square off in the final with the same handicap rules. However the finals are a goalie’s delight, meaning if you score from the pits (goalie area) you get the ball in the pits to start the next point.

The final standings are:1. Brad Chamberlain (Expert): 113 pts.

2. Bob Duncan (Amateur): 104 pts.3. Nick Bourdos (Pro): 98 pts.4. Jim King (Amateur): 98 pts.5. Mike Sames (Expert): 77 pts.6. Pat Cain (Amateur): 74 pts.

The finals will be taking place Friday, February 5th at Duke’s Sports Bar and has the potential to bring some very interesting, and possibly, disputed results due to the incredibly unique playoff format. Make sure you mark this one on your calendars and get your ‘posteriors’ to Dukes!

Miscellaneous

Okay Foosers of Phoenix, I think that since this is Leap Year we should start a new tradi-tion and commemorate it with a tournament on the 29th. I haven’t talked to anyone about this as of yet and don’t realize all of the logistics of pulling it off on a Monday night, but if you’re the least bit interested please feel free to con-tact Bill Nolan and/or Brad Chamberlain and express your interest. I feel fairly confident that since Leap Year only comes around every four years we should be able to generate some interest in a tournament that only occurs every four years. What do you think Foosers?

Here is your chance folks, and that means each and every one of you! Are there any pet peeves (talking during play, excessive 5-bar shots, disproportionate slop-shots, etc.) irritat-ing the heck out of you while engaging in the sport of foosball that you’d like to get off your chest and out in the open? I’m not looking to be derogatory or identify specific ‘offending’ foosers. It’s quite the opposite in fact. I think it would fun to publish those little things that drive us crazy and to remain totally anony-mous. So, if you feel the need to vent some frustrations please rest assured that I’ll keep the source of these ‘annoyances’ to myself.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in any of the previously mentioned venues in any capacity, visit www.ArizonaFoosball.com and register using the current signup sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818. In addition, you can get the latest and greatest details on any foos related activities at this same awesome site.

Remember…Keep Foosin’ Fun!
