Rediscovering Gods MercyExcerpt from theBull of Indiction of the

    Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy

We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring

of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy: the wordreveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate and

supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law thatdwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothersand sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.

Mercy is the very foundation of the Churchs life. All of herpastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness shemakes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and inher witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. TheChurchs very credibility is seen in how she shows mercifuland compassionate love. The Church has an endless desire

to show mercy. Perhaps we have long since forgotten howto show and live the way of mercy. The temptation, on theone hand, to focus exclusively on justice made us forgetthat this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensablestep. But the Church needs to go beyond and strive for ahigher and more important goal. On the other hand, sad tosay, we must admit that the practice of mercy is waning inthe wider culture. In some cases the word seems to have dropped out of use. However, without a witness to mercy, life becomes fruitless and sterile, as if seques-

tered in a barren des-ert. The time has comefor the Church to takeup the joyful call to

mercy once more. It istime to return to thebasics and to bear theweaknesses and strug-gles of our brothers andsisters. Mercy is theforce that reawakens usto new life and instillsin us the courage tolook to the future withhope.

    Mercy is theforce that

    reawakens us tonew life and

instills in us thecourage to lookto the future

    with hope.

The Year of Mercy- According to Jahanara

    T

he Year of Mercy for a little boy named Jahanara isperhaps not quite what Pope Francis has in mind. Hedoes not even know who Pope Francis is, and perhaps

    not even what mercy is.

Jahanara is only five years old, but old enough to know mis-fortune. But nowthanks to God he also understandsChristian love, providence and compassion.

Jahanara attends first grade. With his bright eyes and con-stant smile, he does not seem to be aware of his misfortune. Two years ago, when he was only three, his father, Jinarulfell from a very high coconut tree and broke his spine. He isnow paralyzed from the waist down. In the vain hope ofrecovering some movement he sold his only piece of land totravel to a hospital in Calcutta to see if something could bedone for him. Jinarul returned home penniless to find hisyoung wife gone because her relatives had taken her away

to marry someone else. (This happens many times to those who can no longerwork.)

Jinarul was left with a child to support. But how could he whenhe could not work? Riga, his elderly mother took them in butshe too was completely crippled. How could she care for her sonand grandson? Only Allah knows! Jinarul went into depressionand just lay in his bed. He suffered from bedsores, and he decid-ed to let himself die, as do many in his situation.

At this point, my confrere, Fr. Sergio Targa, tireless in attendingto the poor, the sick and others left on the peripheries ormargins of society as Pope Francis has exhorted, spoke toJinarul about our small center for the disabled, Asharbari,Place

of Hope.I told Sergio we were happy to welcome Jinarul, Jahanara andthe old grandmother. I started to treat his bedsores. They aredeep and are more difficult to heal in the hot, humid tropicalclimate of Bangladesh.

For the festival of Eid, the biggest festival in Islam, the family wanted to goback to their village, on the edge of the forest. There was another round of misfortune when a cow kicked littleJahanara, badly fracturing bones in his leg. A facility nearby their village plastered it somehow. Several days laterafter they returned to Asharbari, I took X-rays which showed, as I had thought, that the fracture had not healedand the bones are welded crossed and I understood that the child would be likely to have one leg shorter than theother for life. He would need an operation in a specialized clinic in the city to fix the problem.

Thank God for the many generous people in America who send money to help our ministry so we have the funds for

the trip and the surgery and thereby can finally provide some good fortune for Jahanara!Otherwise he would have been poor, motherless, with a handicapped father and he himself

would have remained crippled, and never looked forward to a brighter tomorrow.

This will be a Year of Mercy for Jahanara! He perhaps will never say the OurFather, but as a good Muslim he can raise his eyes to Allah the Merciful.

In the Kayap Madonna we remember the wishes of thechild Jesus in her arms. The feathers of the crown orhalo surrounding her are from the Arara Macaws, thelargest parrots of our region. Together with the starrysky the picture illustrates another world ... where some-one is waiting for us. Interfaith in Action!

Pope Francis reminds us: An attitude of openness in truthand in love must characterize the dialogue with the follow-ers of non-Christian religions, in spite of various obstacles

and difficulties, especially forms of fundamentalism on both sides.Inter-religious dialogue is a necessary condition for peace in theworld, and so it is a duty for Christians as well as other religiouscommunities. This dialogue is in first place a conversation abouthuman existence or simply, as the bishops of India have put it, amatter of being open to them, sharing their joys and sorrows.

In this way we learn to accept others and their different ways ofliving, thinking and speaking. We can then join one another intaking up the duty of serving justice and peace, whichshould become a basic principle of all our exchang-es. A dialogue which seeks social peace andjustice is in itself, beyond all merely practicalconsiderations, an ethical commitment whichbrings about a new social situation. ~The Joy of

the GospelI participated in a Groundswell Movement event inDecember where I helped deliver a letter of support tothe Islamic Center of Old Bridge, NJ. The Xaverian Mis-sionaries have an ongoing commitment to dialogue andactions which foster peace and unity in our diverse world.

Groundswell is a growingonline communityof morethan 200,000 peoplewho believe faith can bea force for good in theworld. Leaders, organizers, and activists come to

Groundswell to connectand share their work forjustice with a movement ofother faith-inspired change-makers. Groundswellenvisions multi-faithmovements for justicethat are so irresistiblyinspiring, powerfullyorganized, sustained, anddeeply rooted in our faithsthat we spark wide-reaching change.

The Dream of St. Guido Conforti...

On March 30, 2015 we celebrated the 150th anniversary ofour Founders birth and baptism. On December 3, 2015 ouInstitute, founded in 1895, turned 120 years old.December 3rd is also the feast day of our patron saint, FrancisXavier, who died on 3 December 1552, on the island of Sancianvery close to China, which the great evangelizer was trying toreach. He was quite similar to Moses, who died in the landof Moab as the Lord decreed, deprived of the joy of reachingthe Promised Land after leading the people out of Egypt. TheLord had told him: This is the country which I promised onoath to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I shall give it to your

descendants. I have allowed you to see it for yourself, but youwill not cross into it (Dt 34:4). Like Moses, Francis Xavier alsohad to be satisfied with contemplating from afar the land helonged to enter.

Our Institute has now reached the same age as Moses was whehe died: 120 years! In his recent biography of the Founder, Fr.Luca writes: The new Institute was inaugurated on December3, 1895, the feast of St. Francis Xavier, in the presence of thebishop, many priests and friends. The new Institute was placedunder the protection of St. Francis Xavier, the apostle of theIndies. The first group of missionary aspirants was made up ofseventeen young men who came from various parishes of the

diocese. On that same day, Bishop Francesco Magani published theDecree that established the Seminario Emiliano per le MissioniEstere in Parma, in which he approved the new Institute andexpressed the hope that it would flourish. In this document, the bishop praised Conforti the priest, Canon of the CathedralBasilica and his Pro-vicar, and formulated the wish that thenew Institute would be blessed with growth and many excellenworkers, who will spread the Gospel of peace, the Word of lifamong the many peoples who need it.

One hundred and twenty years is no small achievement, especially if we reach them in the splendid condition of Moses

full of days and his eyes undimmed, his vigor unimpaired.Normally, old age weakens the eyes. A penetrating gaze in theBible is a characteristic of the prophets. It is no coincidencethat Moses, after his age is mentioned, is presented as aprophet, indeed, as the greatest prophet of all, althoughanother reason is added that qualifies him as such, hiscommunion and intimacy with the Lord: There has never beensuch a prophet in Israel as Moses, the man whom the Lord knewface to face (Dt 34:10).

St. Guido Conforti with his first missionaries at thefounding of the Institute

    Lasting 120 years and counting

Vigor is another typical characteristic of youth. His vigorwas unimpaired tells us that Moses enjoyed physical andpsychological strength until the end of his life. He died in thefull possession of his faculties. I find this text of Deuteronomyinteresting because it challenges us to examine the healthof our missionary family as it reaches the great age of 120years. Vigor can refer to the vitality of its evangelical witness, its ability to spread the charism, its fidelity to the ad gentes,ad extra, and ad vitam. Individuals, rather than impressivestructures, are the most important resource of any institution.Individuals are a source of enrichment: they make a difference.

Every year, the history of the Congregation is marked byRegional Chapters that take stock of our situation, we holdassemblies at various levels and, every six years, the GeneralChapter is the peak moment of our discernment. The relentlessageing process in our Family is a challenge to us. We can agewell or badly, happy or dissatisfiedeither without strength, orwith our vigor and gaze intact.

The audacious project was the expression used by the youngGuido Conforti to express the dream he carried in his heart. We pray for the audacity and vigor which would enableus to make the leap in quality of which we all, more or lessconsciously, feel the need.

    World Mission News Digest

AFRICA/DRCBishops arecommittedto promotingdialogue inview of the2016 election

    deadline

    Kinshasa (Agenzia

    Fides) - The

Bishops of the Democratic Republic of Congo are

committed to fostering dialogue among political

    parties and civil

    society in view of

    the 2016 electiondeadline stated

    Don Lonard

    Santedi, Secretary

    General of CENCO

    (National Episcopal

    Conference of

    Congo) at the end

    of the meeting

between a delegation of Congolese Bishops and

representatives of the Independent National Elec-

toral Commission (INEC), held in Kinshasa.

    The Bishops, as

    pastors, have be-gun meetings with

    political actors

    and civil society

    to see what needs

    to be done to

    improve the

    situation regarding

    dialogue, said

    Don Santedi. The

    President of INEC

Corneille Nangaa Yobeluo has completed the evalu-

ation of the electoral process and that the publica-

tion of the electoral calendar is still conditioned by

    the approval of the Parliament.

INEC has assured us that it will do everything

from a technical point of view but not everything

depends on it, said Don Santedi. Because there

are things that depend on the government, the

Parliament where laws must be passed, policy mak-

ers and INEC showed us where we must commit

themselves to be able to vote.

AMERICA/UNITED STATESUSA Bishops support Pres.Obamas measures to limit the

    spread of weapons

Washington (Agenzia Fides) - Thank God

there is someone who nally has the courage

to ll the gaps in our shameful laws on gun

control in order to reduce the number of

massacres, murders and suicides that have

become a plague in our country. Bishop

Kevin Joseph Farrell of Dallas, TX expressed

in his blog in January. The Bishop described

Obamas proposal as moderate, and said

the vehement reaction of Congress was

    because Congress has unabashedly sold

itself to the gun lobby. In his speech, Bp.

Farrell stressed that it will be banned to

enter public places like churches and schools

armed and show weapons, despite the recent

provision in Texas which allows holders of

weapons to take them with them and exhibit

them in public. This choice, wrote Bishop

Farrell, is founded in the belief that our

churches, schools and other places of worship

are destined to be sanctuariessacred placeswhere people come to pray...

Over the years, the Bishops Conference of

the United States has commented on a wide

range of policies. Among other things, the USBishops have denounced human trafcking,

have called for the abolition of the death

penalty and have urged Congress to change

    the policy on immigration.

Back in 1994 the Bishops had published the

document Confronting a Culture of Violence.

Archbishop of Miami, Thomas G. Wenski, in a

statement released by the US Conference of

Catholic Bishops after the speech of President

Obama on the need for measures to regulate

the sale and dissemination of rearms said,

The US Bishops have asked for reasonablepolicies to help reduce violence with weapons

for a long time. Violence in our society

is a complex problem, with many aspects,

and takes many forms. Even if no measure

is able to eliminate all acts of violence

involving rearms, we welcome the efforts

made to save lives and make communities

safer. We hope that Congress will take this

issue more seriously, considering all the

various aspects it involves. In the US

alone, more than 33,000 people were

    killed by rearms in 2013.

ASIA/INDONESIANew Year begins in the signof unity between Catholicsand Muslims

Jakarta (Agenzia Fides) - An atmo-

    sphere of unity and brotherhood

    between Christians and Muslims has

increased in Indonesia. In many places,

it is tradition for young Muslims in

Indonesia to join the police force to

    monitor churches and ensure safety

    during the Christmas celebrations. But

this is not all: as reported to Fides byFr. Aloys Budi Purnomo, during the

Christmas season the Muslims took part

in the celebrations as a sign of broth-

erhood and friendship in some places

in the region of Central Java.

It was a valuable testimony of brother-

hood among people of various reli-

gions: for example, in a village in the

district of Semarang, where only one

Catholic family lives, the Hadi family,

Muslims joined the Christians in a

warm atmosphere of fraternal solidarityfor the Christmas celebrations, in a

    domestic ritual, he added.

On that occasion, the deputy mayor of

the village said: We accepted the

    invitation to participate in this

Christmas celebration: we are here as

citizens, to give a sign of harmony.

    Although we profess different religions,

we are all members of Gods family.

Father Alyos Budi Purnomo, vice presi-

dent of the Forum for Religious

Harmony in Central Java, praises theexample of local people who live in

harmony and peace, regardless of their

religious belonging, in the hope that

    these testimonies become a blessing

for all the people in the world.

SHRINEWe wanted to explore the Year of Mercy through the prism of the Beatitudes in a very

concrete way. The presenters are people or organizations who live mercy as expressed by

a given beatitude. For example, the rst gathering in December was based on the First

Beatitude, Blessed are the poor in spirit. We invited the coordinator of the St. Vincent

de Paul Society of Boston, who shared with us the spirit, meaning and challenges of this

beatitude and concretely how we can live it. The second meeting concerned Blessed are

those who mourn, for they will be comforted. We invited Mrs. Johanna Chao, a Hospice

Chaplain, to share her ministry and challenge us to see all life stages in a different way.

On February 14th, our 3rd gathering was on the Beatitude: Blessed are the meek, for

they will inherit the earth. Mrs. Mildred Morin, who is a member of one of the rst families

that was part of the Catholic Worker movement started by Dorothy Day, guided us in reect-

ing on this. The series will continue on the second Sunday of every month (except May) from

3:30 PM till 6:00 PM. For more information please call the shrine at 508-429-2144..

NJ: THE FIELD HOSPITAL IS OPEN!

The thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity.

I see the church as a eld hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the

level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds....

Gods mercy has been at the heart of Pope Francis own life ever since an extraordinary, mystical experience of it at the age of 17 that

has shaped his exercise of ministry as priest, bishop and now pope.

The 2016 Lenten Conversations exploring this topic will be led by Fr. Michael Davitti, SX at Our Lady of the Valley parish in Wayne NJ on

    Feb. 16th/23rd and March/1st/8th/15th at 7:30-8:45 PM

Fr. Michael will also offer seminars on the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy at St. Joseph parish in Newton NJ on February 13, 20,

27 and March 5 at 10:30 AM. For more information please call 973-942-2975 ~Fr. Michael Davitti SX
