courage when things go wrong.” ― Laura Ingalls Wilder

St. Patrick High School Update
Registration, Option Sheets and Course Level Selection for Grade Nine.
All grade eight homeroom classes were visited by four counselors from the
Student Services Office at St. Patrick High School on Thursday, January 12th
,
2017. Selection of appropriate course levels for grade nine was a major
focus of these presentations. Students were given an option sheet and
registration package to take home. Students, with their parents and guardians, are reminded to choose carefully when selecting the appropriate
level of instruction for grade nine English, Mathematics, Science, Geography and French. Parents and
guardians will find the course descriptions on Career Cruising helpful in understanding the difference
between course levels that pertain to many grade nine courses and associated pathways.
Some advice from the Student Services Office at St. Patrick High School:
Grade 9 course level decisions should be based on ensuring that your son/daughter achieves success –
that they achieve a passing grade in the grade 9 subjects in order to receive the 9 credits needed
toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Obtaining 16 credits by the age of 16 is a very
important step in your child being successful in obtaining their OSSD. It is very difficult for a student to do
“catch-up” if she/he has not successfully completed the credits/courses in grade 9 and 10. Parents and guardians of grade eight students are reminded that the completed and signed option sheet
along with the Career Cruising signoff sheet for St. Patrick High School are due to your child’s
homeroom teacher by Friday, February 24th
, 2017.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding transition to grade nine, please contact either Mme Antaki or
Ms. Bruzzese in the PJPII Student Services Office or call St. Patrick High School Student Services Office at
623-5218. You can also visit the website at www.tbcdsb.on.ca/patrick/.

Miss Poluyko's health classes have
been studying mental health this month
and took part in #BellLetsTalk Day on
January 25th. The students watched a
documentary on suicide prevention in
the community of Cross Lake, Manitoba
entitled “The Sound of Thunder” and
listened to a speech by former NHL’er
Theo Fleury on dealing with trauma.
To cap off the day, students each made
a sign displaying what mental health
meant to them. The hashtag #BellLetsTalk
was encouraged to be used on their social
media as each time it was, 5 cents would
be donated by Bell to support mental
health initiative

What Parents Need to Know About Phone Vaults
Although the "vault" apps aren't new on phones, technology is
becoming more sophisticated. With one app called "Calculator Lock,"
users type in a secret four-digit code on the calculator and press the
equal/percent sign. The app then transforms into a secret vault where
users can store photos, messages or browse the internet.
Although these apps can increase mobile safety, their power can be
flipped on parents when a teen uses them to store sexual photos,
private chats, inappropriate videos, or any array of inappropriate
content.
Criminal Code
Students and parents need to be informed that possession and
distribution of sexual photos is considered Child Pornography under
the Criminal Code Part V-Sexual Offences. Should a student be either
in possession of or distributing sexual photos, consequences may apply
at the school level and may also be enforced through the law.
Advice for Students and Parents
Students are reminded to be good digital citizens and use
technology in a savvy, safe and ethical way. Students should be using
social media to present the best of themselves. They need to be
aware of the short and long term ramifications of not doing this.
Parents need to check their kid's phone and know when new apps are
downloaded. If you pay the phone bill for your child, be advised that
you could be legally liable for the phone's contents. It is important
that parents address and include technology whenever they talk to
their kids about family values, goals and responsibilities.
