South Central Electric Helps Provide Funds for Local Fire DepartmentsThe St. James Fire Department received a $200,400.00 zero interest loan for a new fire truck on January 8th. The loan was provided by South Central Electric through the USDA Rural Economic Development Grant program. South Central Electric received the USDA grant and has used the funds to provide zero interest loans to area fire departments over the past three years. Since receiving the grant South Central Electric has provided zero interest loans to the Lewisville, LaSalle, Jeffers, Ormsby and St. James fire departments. All the loans were used to help fund fire trucks. “The loan for the St. James Fire Department saved the department thousands of dollars” said Sam Hansen, St. James City Manager.
When the loans are paid back to South Central Electric the money is used to provide economic development loans to busi-nesses and organizations within the cooperative’s service area. Last year South Central Electric joined Rural Electric Economic Development, Inc. (REED). REED will oversee the funding and application process for South Central Electric. “Joining REED gives South Central Electric access to more funds and expanded loan opportunities to help our local communities” stated Jim Haler, South Central Electric Member Services Manager.
“As a rural electric cooperative, South Central Electric, has access to some USDA economic development programs. These pro-grams along with joining REED gives us the ability to encourage economic growth within our service area. Providing money for area fire departments to purchase the equipment they need to keep us safe is a big part of that” expressed Haler.
Jim Haler, South Central Electric Member Service Manager, (right) hands St. James Fire Chief Brad Orvis (middle) and City Manager Sam Hansen (left) a check for $200,400.00. The money is a zero percent loan for the department’s new fire truck. South Central Electric received a USDA Rural Economic Development Grant to provide zero interest loans to area fire departments.

South Central Electric Partners with Cooperative Response Center, Inc. Working Together to Provide Service ExcellenceOne of the most cost-effective ways South Central Electric has to provide around-the-clock customer service is to use a contact center. Recently, South Central Electric partnered with Cooperative Response Center, Inc. (CRC), a nationwide, 24/7 contact center, to assist with its customer service needs.
With locations in Austin, Minnesota, Dunlap, Tennessee, and Abilene, Texas, CRC specializes in call handling and dispatching line crews, providing service excellence by focusing on the human side of technology. South Central Electric chose to join CRC to provide members a way to call after normal business hours. Our on-call linemen used to receive the calls. During a large outage members calls could go answered because the line crew were busy working on the outage. Members can now use our toll-free outage number, 888-805-7232, and should have their calls answered.
CRC provides services primarily to rural electric utilities, including after-hours dis-patch and around-the-clock customer care. When you call after regular business hours, your call is immediately routed to the call center where knowledgeable staff members can address your concerns regarding electrical emergencies. It will dispatch crew mem-bers and follow up with you, if requested, to assure your power has been restored. It is helpful that you provide important key information to avoid delays in getting help to you as quickly as possible, including your account number, physical address and, most importantly, your map location number. All of this information can be found on your billing statement.
Keeping your contact information updated is crucial. If you are calling from a phone number South Central Electric has on file, your call automatically will sync with your account information, considerably shortening the response time.
As a member of Touchstone Energy, South Central Electric has found the values of CRC mirror its own as a member-driven company, putting service excellence in the forefront.
Our outage number is 888-805-7232.
